Throughout the semester we had to do the glossary assignment every week. It created a new habit where I would look up everything I didn’t understand. At first i would just do it for the vocabulary list. But as time passed by it became a habit. I was doing it because I wanted to know what the meaning of the word. This way I had a better understanding of the word, sentence and even the article or the book I was reading.

After a very long and hard semester, I can say I have been able to accomplish a lot. Though it was not exactly a “piece of cake”, there is still much knowledge and thorough understanding I can now integrate in my “ways of seeing.” This personal glossary we have all created was an excellent way of being able to give myself a much more thorough and meaningful understanding of context and content in ENG 1101. Not only was I able to understand better, but also give myself a sort of perspective on what exactly it was that we, as students, were given to analyze. Not only was it beneficial in that perspective, but also in the way we expanded our vocabulary. Such words we have learned can easily give us a jumpstart on our future English courses. Having that knowledge and understanding on such advanced vocabulary can help us understand future context and studies, and at the same time be grounds for use within our own vocabulary in our essays, reports, etc etc. Also, I feel as if I have founded a sort of curiosity within myself, that gives me an incentive to continue to research unknown words within future context. I have come to notice that I tend to google certain words or phrases when I come across them in my everyday life. That in itself can come as an amazing and useful habit, and will definitely benefit me in the long run.

The glossary assignment helped me a lot in building vocabulary. I learned from my own glossary, at the same time learned from the glossaries posted by others. I born and raised up in China, that caused I didn’t have much chance to contact with the English. So when I came to NY, English becomes one big problem to me in conversation. The glossary is a good assignment for the students study for English. When we don’t understand any words, we could searched up to see the definition and make it as a glossary, not only to help myself, also helped other students who never seen this word to encounter it.

From doing this glossary assignment, my experience is its really helpful. Since English isn’t my native language, this assignment helped me learned many new English vocabulary. To do this assignment, I have read a lot news and articles, when I encounter words or terms that I don’t understand or never seem before, I will look it up on internet, this way, so I can understand the words meaning and how do I use it in right place. Not only these fifteen words I learned but also i have seem other students post, and I do learn a lot from their post too. By doing this assignment, I’m not just learning vocabularies, but I also see what is going on in the world by reading those news.

After I finish the glossary assignment, I can feel it realy helps me. Since I was not born in America, my vocabulary is very poor. But this assignment imporves it a lot. By doing the assignment, I need to read a lot of articles and passages. Reading is definitely the best way to increase vocabulary. When I encounter words that I don’t know or I’ve never seen. I need to check the definition of the words in a dictionary or wesbite. By doing this, I not only learn the definition, I also memorise the words. I can also learn more uncommon words by seeing classmates’ glossary posts. Overall, this assignment helps me a lot in improving vocabulary and better memorising words.

After doing all of these glossary words it really helped me out. Doing these words help me broaden my vocabulary. If I didn’t do some of the readings I would probably still not know what half the words I read mean. Looking up word can help you out in the long run because when you do search up the words you can get a better understanding of it and you can use the word in the future on a essay you are writing or a conversation you are having. Having all the other classmates post other words I may have missed or words that I thought I knew but turns out I was completely wrong about the words definition.

These glossary entries really helpful and useful of my reading skill, because I still in the english learner level, these words will more difficult to understand it. By having these words of my glossary, I tried to understanding the meaning and remembered all the words. Even though I don’t remember it, but I still have the first impression of these word. Sometimes I looked at my classmate post about the glossary, it was the other way to know more. In my glossary, it made me really interested to know the meaning of these words, because I never saw these words that I didn’t know them very well. I believe the glossary not only for the homework grade, probably for my vocabulary also these words helped my classmates . When I go through the glossary post, I saw a lot of the vocabulary my peers post, some words I never saw it before I looked at it. I was pretty thankful of my classmates who posts their entries benefit me a lot.

The glossary assignment for the semester was very effective in helping me. It made me understand each words, with meaning and the use of parts of speech wise. It definitely helped me in the process of reading, however other than reading the article provide to us, it did not. I do not mean that it didn’t help me, however I actually had no time reading such other materials. By checking the definition, on Merriam-Webster which I thought it would be the best dictionary source, it showed me a clear view on each vocabulary. One of the definition was found from the use of Thesaurus because I wanted to discover new words that had a similar meaning, I believe that using other resource and different dictionary might be just sufficient resource, like google define for a quick search. There was many vocabulary words that contained two definition for a single word, I learned that I had to make sure which one best fits the sentence as a whole. By coordinating with my classmates for this crowd-sourced project, it made a resourceful site and it helped others build on to their vocabulary. In addition, this project will going to help me in the future where I probably need so that I can be more professional speaker and writer. This project felt and united as a being in a community, such we done in the COMD class for the humument project where we picked our single significant page that meant each to us and the class didactic post for the presentation downstairs.

While working on this glossary throughout the course I noticed there was a lot of words I felt I knew the definition to. In reality if I was to be tested on those words I would’ve probably failed. Some of these words that are listed I had that feeling of maybe knowing  what it meant. The other words I just didn’t know What they meant or it was my first time encountering the word. Before I posted my word on to the glossary, I would look through the dashboard to see if it was already claimed by another student. Some of these words that I’ve encountered had multiple definitions so I gave all the definitions but stated which definition was related towards the text that I found the word in. For every word, I gave my understanding not only in the word but also in the author’s text. With this glossary, it made me really think about the words I don’t know instead of just giving up on them because I did not know their meaning. I believe the words I searched for not only helped expand my vocabulary but also helped out my fellow peers. Every time I would see my word on the glossary I would have another word I could learn its definition. This glossary project made the learning of words feel like a community. Each week there was a new word to be learned, not only from me providing a word but the other students providing their words as well.

End-of-semester checklist

A few reminders and follow-ups as we approach the end of the semester:

  • The glossary write-up is due. Today. Refresh your memory of the instructions here. As soon as I have them all, I can compile a complete glossary from the semester.
  • As you prepare for the final exam, remember to review the notes from our discussion about preparing for and writing this essay exam. Remember also that you can ask questions/answer questions/make comments in the comments section.
  • I posted instructions for the Project #4 cover letter. Please write this post so I can take your ideas into account as I re-read your work.
  • Many of the Project #3 posts did not have Works Cited lists–without them I can only assume that you either didn’t do any research, or that you used sources without giving them proper credit. If you add your Works Cited lists, I can take that into account as I finalize the grades for Project #3.
  • If we had discussed your plans to revise one or more of your projects this semester, would you remind me by sending me the link to the revised version? I have several, but before I return them on Monday, I would like to have everyone’s accounted for and graded.
  • I’m really excited to see your finished altered-book projects. Remember that we’ll take lots of pictures of them and of you with them on Monday in COMD 1100.
  • If you would like additional feedback on any of your work, we can schedule a meeting.
  • Good luck with all of your work! You can do it!
