In the beginning of this project, I was nervous to start it. I didn’t know what exactly we had to do for this assignment. In class we learned about the word, juxtaposition. Hearing the word made me nervous more starting the project. From learning the meaning of the word, I slowly understood what we had to do for this project. For phase one, we had to go on a walk and find a location. In the beginning, I didn’t know what location I wanted to do and had to think about it. After going on a walk after class, I finally found what place I wanted to do. For my first draft, I had a hard time writing it. After the peer feedback, I decided to change the location. Writing the final essay felt easier than the first draft I wrote. But I still wasn’t satisfied with my final writing. It felt that it was short and I didn’t write all what I needed to write about. Overall the essay took about around 3 hours to do.
Everyday, new changes are happening and sometimes we are not aware of that. One place in particular that has been changing over the years is New York. Living in New York, we don’t realize or pay attention that it’s happening. From Colton Whitehead’s novel City Limits, he says “…At some point you were closer to the last time than you were to the first time, and you didn’t know it. You didn’t know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbye.” There is always something changing in New York, whether it’s constructing new buildings or adding new businesses. Colton Whitehead also says in his novel, “Over a lifetime, that adds up to a lot of neighborhoods, the motley construction material of your jerry-built metropolis.” Here in New York City, it is filled with many different businesses brought together to make a street full of variety.
For this project, the place that I chose to do was the shop’s on Fulton Street Mall in Fulton Street, Brooklyn. From the City Tech building, it’s only a walking distance to the store. When you get out from the Namm building, you turn right and just walk straight until you’re at the corner of 403 Jay Street. When you’re walking from Jay Street, you’ll pass by the Supreme and Family Court, the Jay Street/MetroTech train station, and some stores on the way. When you get to the corner of 403 Jay Street, cross the street and just continue walking straight. On your walk in Fulton Street Mall, you’ll see many familiar brand name shops and some small businesses. Some shops you might see are Macy’s, H&M, Gap, Foot Locker, Payless ShoeSource, Aeropostale, etc.
In the Fulton Street Mall, you see a mix of style and variety of name brand stores and small businesses with over 230 stores. With the variety of shops, there is a mix between small businesses and retailed stores. There is no separation between small businesses and retailed. With all the name brand stores and small businesses mixed with each other, it makes it easier for consumers to shop around. For example, the U.S. Polo Association Outlet Store; it is between a name brand store called Aldo’s, a small business sneaker store and a small business jewelry store. If consumers cannot find what they need in one store, there are many more they can go in that one street.

Everyday, new changes are happening and sometimes we are not aware of it. One place in particular that has been changing over the years is New York; particularly New York City. The city has been known as “The City of Dreams” or “Empire City”. There is always something changing in New York City whether it’s constructing new buildings or adding new businesses. Living in New York, we don’t realize the changes that are happening or we see it but don’t really care too much about it.
For this project, the place that I chose to do was the U.S. Polo Association Outlet Store on 468 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. From the City Tech building, it’s only a walking distance to the store. When you get out from the Namm building, you turn right and just walk straight until you’re at the corner of 2 Smith Street. When you’re walking from Jay Street, you’ll pass by the Supreme and Family Court, the Jay Street/MetroTech train station, and some stores on the way. When you get to the corner of 2 Smith Street, cross the street and continue to walk straight. On you’re walk, you’ll pass through many shops such as Gap, Foot Locker, Unique, Macy’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Kay Jewelers, Modells Sporting Shops, Journey’s. When you see Aldo’s, you’ll see the Polo Outlet Store right next to it. You won’t be able to miss it because of the cream colored building and the large blue polo logo on the store.
The U.S. Polo Association brand has been going on since 1890 and it continues to grow with many outlet stores opened in New York and other different states. From the five boroughs in New York, three outlet stores are opened in Manhattan, one in Queens, one in the Bronx, and one in Brooklyn. The Polo outlet store in Brooklyn is a fairly tall cream building with a large blue polo logo in the front. There are two glass doors at the front. It is also in between a sneaker shop and Aldo.
In Brooklyn, you see a mix of some name brand stores and some non-name brand stores. On Fulton Street you’ll see a line mixed with name rand and non-name brand stores. For example, the U.S. Polo Association Outlet Store, is between a name brand store called Aldo’s, non-name brand sneaker store and a non-name jewelry store. In Manhattan, you mostly see brand name stores that are next to each other such as Tiffany and Co., Armani, Coach, etc. While the other non-name brand stores are somewhere else and they’re all also next to each other.
There are always changes going on around us whether it be the people around us or the neighborhood we grew up in and that we know of. Change is definitely happening constantly in New York. Every corner you turn you see construction happening, they’re either building new houses, building complexes, fixing up roads, or even adding new businesses but there is always something being changed here in new york. I live I New York and I see a lot of changes going on by my neighborhood like they’re building a new mall by my house and fixing up the roads on the belt parkway/southern state. There are a lot of things that use to be here when I was younger and that are not here anymore. Another change people would notice are overlapping neighborhoods, like there could be a nice neighborhood then when you turn the corner the neighborhood could change in an instant and have run down houses and dirty streets, and even you can see a strip of stores and there could be a lot of little self owned businesses and then you see a nice big store that looks out of places that you wouldn’t expect would be there.
The place I chose for this project is a pretty good example of a store that looks out of place and shouldn’t or not expected to be in that spot. I chose a 99-cent store next to a jewelry store on the corner of Lawrence Street and Helen Keller Place. First you exit out the Namm building from the 300 Jay Street side and turn right. You keep going straight for 2 blocks until you reach Willoughby Street, once you get to Willoughby Street you turn left and cross the street and keep going straight until you reach a jewelry store called Giovanni’s Fine Jewelry and next to it is a 99 cent store called 99 cent City.
When I think of a jewelry store I think it would be next to nicer stores or more well known stores in a nicer neighborhood. This is because when people shop in more well known expensive stores those people shopping will be more attracted to the jewelry store. When you see the jewelry store next to this 99-cent store I think how does the jewelry store get business when both stores attract different types of customers. The 99 cent store attracts customers that look for cheap or inexpensive items to buy, and when I looked in the jewelry store the jewelry was no where near 99 cents. Unless the person is looking for a jewelry store to go to or looking for that jewelry store because its close to them then I don’t know why it would be next to a 99 cent store, and the neighbor hood didn’t look all that extraordinary where you think a jewelry store would be.
For this project i chose a 99 cent store next to a jewelry store on the corner of Lawrence Street and Helen Keller Place.

I stumbled across this word while brainstorming for our English project #2. As I was conducting research on Brooklyn’s housing, I came across an article that mentioned “NYCHA Housing is one of the city’s living quarters considered to be today’s Tenements.” At first I inferred that it meant secluded, but upon looking up the word, I discovered it was actually old time slang for run down, lower class living quarters.
For the project #2, I chose to go the Empire Fulton Ferry Park. Before I looked at the map to choose the place, I thought this was the best place for people to know it. To get to this location you exit out of the Namm building and turn left to the Jay street, then go through the Jay street to the York street and turn left. Keep going to the Washington street and turn right to the Plymouth street, before you walk into the Plymouth street. The important thing is around those street have a fascinating place for people take a rest and most attractive shop. When you walked into the Plymouth street, the Manhattan Bridge is on your right side (picture one). I keep walking to the left side, then will see the Jane’s Carousel and the Brooklyn Bridge in front of you (picture two). I whiled away the whole afternoon watching the beautiful view of Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge. There is really perfect for people just sit and take some pictures, also keep you into the relax mood. By the way, the night view is pretty awesome, you have to wait for watch the night view. It’s worth to introduce there for everyone. Also, you can go through the Brooklyn Bridge to the Canal street if you want.
This is a little bit night view at the Brooklyn Bridge Park(Keep walking to the left hand side, across the Brooklyn Bridge.)
This is the bonus when I walk through the Brooklyn Bridge at the perfect time.
For this project, the location I choose is U.S. Post Office which is just one block away from City Tech. I didn’t notice there is one, until I took my sixteen minus of work. To get to the U.S. Post Office with my path, first you need to walk left after get out of Namm hall, at the first block on your right hand side across the street, you can see a park, people are playing hand ball in there. As you keep walking, at the same block on your left hand side, there is another building of City Tech. In front of that building cross the street, there is a church which is right next to the park. Keep walking about 5 minus, you can see the third building of City Tech. On the right hand side, you can see a little garden where you can take a break. Keep walking straight to the next block until reach to the road turn right and look up, you can see a bridge that connects two building, which is for people to walk from building to building. Walking straight to the next block, you can see a parking lot and also, you can see the Brooklyn bridge is not far away from here. Now turn right because that’s the only way to move forward which is also walking back to Namm Hall. This is Adams Street, as you can see on this block its all apartments, until you reach to the end of the block, you can see a restaurant called. Celeste Cafe & Grill. Now look diagonally across the street. There we go, The U.S. Post Office.
For this Project I chose to go too Brooklyn Heights. Before I left I looked a bit into how to get there using the map app on my phone but otherwise I didn’t use my phone until I got too my location so I could look at all the nice buildings that people get to live in. I got there by exiting the Namm building and turning left down on Jay Street towards Tillary Street. From there I made a left on Tillary until I got to Clinton Street you know that you’re going the right way because on your left is a small park dedicated to all the Korean war veterans. Keep going on Clinton Street until you hit Pierrepont Street. When i arrived at Pierrepont Street I follow it looking at all the nice buildings and how many of them differ from each other and how much they differ from the buildings I’m used to in Times Square, until I finally arrived at Brooklyn Heights. There you can see the huge differences between the small building in Brooklyn Heights and the huge towering buildings of Manhattan. While I was there I also saw a photograph of the old New York skyline with the twin towers tied to the fence. I thought that it offered a bit of insight into someone else’s New York. It’s also a really nice place where you can just sit and admire the view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York skyline.
For this project I chose to the modells on 94-11 Rockaway Blvd. To get to this location you exit out of the Namm building and turn right so you’ll be on 300 Jay street, then from there keep walking straight till you get to the A train, its not that hard to miss because theres a big area for just the A,C and F train and its surrounded by construction and you’ll see people coming in and out of the train. You’re going to want to take the A train heading towards Queens, NY, you then get on the train take it 9 stops going to Rockaway Blvd get off the train and head down the stairs once you are down the stairs you turn right and cross the street and first you’ll see a hotdog stand next to a PC Richards then walk straight across Rockaway Blvd and you’ll see a Dunkin Donuts Then you turn right and walk across Woodhaven Blvd you finally get to the Modells. Which use to be a movie theatre that I use to go to, it was actually the first movie theater i ever went to, so this area brings back memories of when i was younger.
This is the modells and the movie theatre it use to be.
