Project #3 Phase 1 – Discover

This first image is a High Key image of Jay Street. You can tell it is a High Key image because of how bright it is. you can clearly see how the sun is shining bright on the edges of the building. You can tell the sun is on the left by looking at the huge shadow the building created on the street. By making this image gray scale, it made the street looks sad and depressing. You can only see a few cars drawing by which people can take as this part of town is really dull and boring.

This second image is a Low Key image of a computer with the screen on in a dark room. You can tell this is a Low Key image by all the negative space. There is no shadow in this picture only a little highlight on the keyboard caused by the brightness on the screen. Part of the keyboard is light and the rest faded into the darkness. This picture can represent there will always be light in the darkness.

Sound Visualizations Project #2: Phase 1

The song I chose for this phase is Stay Ready, by Jhene Aiko. The reason I chose this particular song (other than it being one of my favorite of all time) is because it has many kinds of instrumentals that can be considered both staccato and legato. Its composed of two parts, first part being a very smooth and melodic tone, second being more acoustic and stable so to speak. Its starting tones have such a mellow and calm feel to it, sort of like a flow. These are some words that come to mind when i think “legato”. Upon the songs ending, it becomes more of a sharp beat and instrument. It has more of a pulse as well. Qualities i think of when it comes to “Staccato” The song does have kind of a monotony though, which is only broken when the songs second part comes in. Its bass beat is repetitive, though the sudden changes in the instrumentals keep it interesting regardless. Not a lot of songs use a “two part” format, but this song executes it well, especially since it actually breaks monotony with the sudden change in tone, beat, and overall emotion of the song.

Project #2: Location

For project 2, the location that I decided to do was the U.S. Polo Association Outlet Store on 468 Fulton Street. From the City Tech building, it’s only a walking distance to the store. When you get out from the Namm building, you turn right and just walk straight until you’re at the corner of 2 Smith Street. When you’re walking from Jay Street, you’ll pass by the Supreme and Family Court, the Jay Street/MetroTech train station, and some stores on the way. When you get to the corner of 2 Smith Street, cross the street and continue to walk straight. On you’re walk, you’ll pass through many shops such as Gap, Footlocker, Unique, Macy’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Kay Jewelers, Modells Sporting Shops, Jouney’s. When you see Aldo’s, you’ll see the Polo Outlet Store right next to it. You won’t be able to miss it because of the cream colored building and the large blue polo logo on the store.

I found this word in the reading for the week Universe Strikes Back by Ellen Lupton and I’m thinking she means the second definition where there are identical functions someone can have within them selves.

Profile: Jingyi

What I Observe:

An anime cat
A silly expression on the character

Interpretation;

Based on Jingyis Avatar, i infer that she may consider herself a very funny, silly, and outgoing person. She may have chosen this particular avatar to reflect just that, as the character can be seen to have that type of personality. I also infer that this particular character may be from one of her favorite shows or movies, as it seems to have originated from an anime, based on the style the avatar is drawn.

After Reading Bio:

Based on Jingyis Bio, she is, matter of fact, a fan of anime, and aspires to make a career out of it. She also mentions she wishes to be a voice actor, which, after seeing her avatar, would probably give her choice of Avatar more sense.

What I Observe:

An Adorable Anime Character
Japanese Lettering

Interpretation:

Though its a very simple avatar, it could still speak volumes on the individual. I observe a grey-haired, red-eyed, fierce yet cute looking character drawn in the style of anime, a very popular style of art. This image gives me a sense of fierceness and adventure. I interpret a character that at a glance seems to have an adventurous spirit, and who isn’t afraid of anything. By the object in the characters hand, i inference the character to be Japanese in origin, due to the lettering. Based on all of this, i can make the inference that Ayano is a big fan of anime, and that she chose this character as her avatar because she defines herself as fierce, adventurous, and fearless. I can also infer that her nationality is Japanese.

After Reading Bio:

My inferences seemed to be pretty spot on, as Ayanos bio comfirms most of my assumptions. She is, matter fact, from Japan. She is a big fan of anime, and even aspires to pursue anime as a career in her future.

Profile: Brandy Ortiz

What I Observe:

A Young Girl
Hills in the Distance
Celestial Lights
Plants, Water
A Pedestal of some sort
Flower petals scattering

Interpretation:

What I see in Brandy’s Avatar is a very complex and beautiful illustration of a very young looking girl in a fantasy-like setting. The girl seems to be holding something of mystical or magical essence, while positioned under a starry sky. I also see her surrounded by flowers, potted plants, and crystal water. She is alone, and looks to be very happy, blissful and feel independent about it. I depict the image as very magical and spiritual, with a sense of mystery as well. Based on this avatar, I infer that Brandy is regularly a fan of genres like fantasy and science fiction. She may be into books, movies or TV shows about fantasy and magic. I can also infer that her avatar can be a reflection of her character. Perhaps she herself feels like an independent person, who loves the night and connects with everything around her in a very spiritual way.

After Reading Bio:

Most off my inferences were not really confirmed within her bio. Though the Avatar seems very complex and deep (to me), Brandy seems to be a more laid back, and simple individual. Although she IS a fan of anime. Which, being a fan myself, i know consists of a lot of fantasy, therefore sort of confirming my inference on her being a fan of such things

Trix Yogurt

I found the trip yogurt container on Tillary Street. It was compressed or flattened and a little dirty when I found it but it still has those bright beautiful colors on it. a child or a man/woman must’ve been eating this for a snack and when he or she was finished with it they didn’t wait till they found a garbage to throw it away and thats how it ended up on the ground.

Piece of Concrete

This piece of concrete i found on the corner of Jay street and Tillary Street it was next to a sign i think the sign might have been a bus stop but not to sure. Since there is construction going on something must have happened to make the piece break off from the ground.

Flower

I found a flower on Myrtle ave and Flatbush but i did not use it to trace on my paper because i was unable to use that one do to the fact that it died while sitting in the bag for so long. So on the way home that day i picked up a flower that looked similar in shape and color.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 1 Discover

My Discovery

While we were outside looking for urban artifacts I came across a few interesting items they consist of a bottle cap, a small plastic bag, a package wrapper and a Lowes key ring. These objects aren’t exactly the most interesting things to look at they are all geometric shapes except for the bottle cap which has more of a natural shape. Even the colors of the objects aren’t exactly the best most of them are a dull green or blue while the plastic bag is transparent. So instead I have theorized that the objects have all came from a bus driver on his lunch break who wanted an excuse not to go to Lowes on his way home. I thought of this immediately when I saw the print on the plastic bag saying bus company.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 1 Discover

My Discovery

The three artifacts I discovered are two maple leafs and a stone. The first artifact is green maple leaf . It is a small and still green. It is more organic but also can be geometric. I found this leaf on the street around the Flatbush avenue.

The second artifact I found is other one maple lead. It has the different color of my first lead. The leaf is organic but also can be geometric. I found this leaf on the side walk. When I take the leaf, I imagine the autumn is coming soon.

The third artifact I found is a stone. The stone is organic since it was created by nature. I found this stone on the side walk also, I imagine it from road and was move between the car.

All these artifacts are some similar. The two leafs and s stone have different properties such as shapes. They are all found on the street, created and came from the nature.
