Project #2 – Final

Everyday, new changes are happening and sometimes we are not aware of that. One place in particular that has been changing over the years is New York. Living in New York, we don’t realize or pay attention that it’s happening. From Colton Whitehead’s novel City Limits, he says “…At some point you were closer to the last time than you were to the first time, and you didn’t know it. You didn’t know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbye.” There is always something changing in New York, whether it’s constructing new buildings or adding new businesses. Colton Whitehead also says in his novel, “Over a lifetime, that adds up to a lot of neighborhoods, the motley construction material of your jerry-built metropolis.” Here in New York City, it is filled with many different businesses brought together to make a street full of variety.

For this project, the place that I chose to do was the shop’s on Fulton Street Mall in Fulton Street, Brooklyn. From the City Tech building, it’s only a walking distance to the store. When you get out from the Namm building, you turn right and just walk straight until you’re at the corner of 403 Jay Street. When you’re walking from Jay Street, you’ll pass by the Supreme and Family Court, the Jay Street/MetroTech train station, and some stores on the way. When you get to the corner of 403 Jay Street, cross the street and just continue walking straight. On your walk in Fulton Street Mall, you’ll see many familiar brand name shops and some small businesses. Some shops you might see are Macy’s, H&M, Gap, Foot Locker, Payless ShoeSource, Aeropostale, etc.

In the Fulton Street Mall, you see a mix of style and variety of name brand stores and small businesses with over 230 stores. With the variety of shops, there is a mix between small businesses and retailed stores. There is no separation between small businesses and retailed. With all the name brand stores and small businesses mixed with each other, it makes it easier for consumers to shop around. For example, the U.S. Polo Association Outlet Store; it is between a name brand store called Aldo’s, a small business sneaker store and a small business jewelry store. If consumers cannot find what they need in one store, there are many more they can go in that one street.

Project #2 (Final)

Have you ever been to any other borough other than Manhattan? Many of us are afraid to take a step forward to the unknown place that we have never set our foot on. What if there is an opportunity opened up before our eyes? Would you take a chance to discover something you haven’t encountered? People see unusual things such as an expensive store like Swarovski jewelry store next to an Off Price Fashion Outlet, which is a store you can get cheap clothes. Although, Manhattan consumers know areas to get specific cheap and expensive items, Brooklyn consumers get the overlap of the contrasting elements.

Brooklyn is one of the five boughs that represents New York City. It combines with many mixed society that expresses equality toward the people and their culture. In Brooklyn, there are many stores that have different backgrounds which is nothing like what we see in other boroughs of New York, includes Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, or Staten Island. Stores in Brooklyn is where different boroughs are collided together, meaning stores from Manhattan can be found in Brooklyn next to stores from Bronx. It makes a whole new mixed borough that does not identify difference in people nor their social class and culture. Most of the stores are differentiated by cheap and expensive, the element of juxtaposition of the costs where stores contrasts each other. There are many stores on Fulton Street that has an example that shows the juxtaposition of cheap and expensive stores. The article, “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead, states that “You start building your own New York the first time you lay eyes on it” and it is indeed true. Colson explains how every person who lives or visits New York gets a different thoughts on the city. Since every person’s perspectives are different, it changes the point of view on the city; Noticing the overlaps around the different boroughs when they visit. One of the example is, there is a Off Price Fashion Outlet, where you can get cheap clothes next to an expensive Swarovski jewelry store. This weird combination of stores next to each other makes this borough unique. Another example of juxtaposition where time overlaps is; there was a T-mobile store in Fulton Street, however within a few days the store was already empty and the sign were gone. This kind of phenomenon happens where your memory thinks that “It was just there a few days ago” this is something that we don’t see everyday, other than Brooklyn.

On the other hand, Manhattan is an interesting that is most known for the reputation of New York City. Times Square, which is in Manhattan is a very famous place that everyone knows about it, if you are currently living in New York City or if you hear the city’s name. This place intrigues people by the lights of the Broadway shows, TKTS known as ticket booth, Empire State Building, Central Park, the ball drop on New Years and it is called the place where beginning of fashion started. Instead of having stores mixed like in Brooklyn, Manhattan is divided into two parts that shows the example of juxtaposition. Manhattan is divided into West and East sides, they are different in which people believe that expensive stores are located in the east side and cheap stores are located in the west side where more people can afford. This statement may not be true, many people know when they reach to a certain areas that they come across are different. Example of juxtapositions between cheap and expensive stores in Manhattan is a lot similar in Brooklyn, however same stores in costs are located in the same areas.

Comparing the borough between Brooklyn and Manhattan, it is shown that Brooklyn borough are more mixed in society. There is no difference in social class with the store management where everything have to be the same. Each store are different but in the same location. Because of these stores are arranged, it focuses on the client-tell feel more comfortable walking the place they are familiar. Brooklyn makes the people feel welcome and to show that there is no difference in their background stories. An example is Swarovski, an expensive jewelry store that is usually found in mid-town Manhattan. However, was found in Brooklyn where the store was next to an Off Price Fashion Outlet store, where you can get cheap clothes. This historic symbol of an swan and its name itself represents their example of elegance and beauty, it also makes the store to stands out what is around it. From the article “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead, states that “… started to wonder why some sidewalks sparkle at certain angles, and others don’t”, Colson clearly conveys how people do “wonder” about the difference of cheap and expensive stores in juxtaposition. These example shows the different juxtaposition of overlapping costs in cheap and expensive.

When there is a opportunity opened up, take the chance where they show the different part of city that you have not seen before. Manhattan can be a place that is intriguing, because of the Broadway shows, TKTS known as ticket booth, Empire State Building, Central Park, the ball drop on New Years and it is called the place where beginning of fashion started. However, Brooklyn represent something more and unique that shows other people from the borough to understand their difference that are congenial to them. Places like Brooklyn, it makes you think that you just teleported to a different part of New York City, by only taking a few steps.

Sound Visualizations: Phase 3

After about approximately 3 hours of work time overall, I was able to finish my final animation for project #2. Overall im pretty satisfied with the final product, although i wish i couldve had more time to experiment with the Animatron program, and been able to learn how to use it better. I used the songs “Without Me” by Eminem, which is a very straight, staccato rap composition, and “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars, which is a more flowing legato composition.

Sound Visualization: Phase 3 & 4

Here is my project for animation. I used two songs that I listen to, Empire by Shakira and Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez. It look me about 2 hours to complete the actual animation and plus 10 minutes in adding sound track.

*Something is wrong with Animatron, progress in fixing.

Project #2: Homework

I chose this subject of how Brooklyn is a great example of borough that shows the difference in social system. I chose this because I thought it would be a great opportunity to differentiate between two borough. I have never done this before which it is refreshing, of how I can really see each borough in positive and negative ways. What stroked me was how Brooklyn was a place that I had never thought it was a intriguing place. I thought that story of Brooklyn was something more dangerous of that people say in the news, where there is shooting and such occurs. Guessing and seeing difference in place where you walk, makes the view of its place unique. Of what I saw, the story of Brooklyn is further more than what I had imagined. Such beautiful construction of each buildings and how historic the place makes the tourist like me, who stepped into the location for the first time makes the yearn for more knowledge of the place. I would want to learn how Brooklyn made the tittle of Brooklyn, I believe that if you want to know something, search the place from the beginning. This would be my first step to do any research.

From the reading expert, “City Limits“ by Colson Whitehead, the author explains to the reader that sees the New York different from other people. As he grew up, city itself also reformed where he saw the overlaps of the things that other people would not notice the change. Because of the walk we done in class, I can relate the overlaps that I saw in Brooklyn, like Colson Whitehead have saw. How he explains one of his paragraph that, old residents that he knew had been there disappeared overtime. As it relates to my overlap of T-mobile store had shutdown within about a week in Brooklyn, and not many people have noticed.

Sound Visualization: Phase #1

For this project I listened to the song “Hold On Till May” by Pierce the Veil. This song helped me create both Legato and Staccato patterns because of the way the music flows in the beginning and then builds up with guitars and drums, but then switches and slows down again around the bridge of the song. I decided to draw long cylindrical, weaving and wave shapes for Legato and for Staccato I drew triangles and zig zag shapes.

My Decision On My Subjects

I decided to choose these two subjects to juxtapose because they are so completely different to me. Walking down Jay Street my eye catches this big beautiful building which is the Brooklyn Fire Headquarters, and right next to it is a small cafĂ© that you can miss you don’t look carefully. What strikes me the most is why they would build a small cafĂ© right in the middle of these big tall buildings? It just does not fit right. What I want to know is, how long has the fire house and the cafĂ© been there? What was there before the cafĂ© was built there? Why did they chose to build a cafĂ© in that location? As Whitehead said from City Limits “Go back to your old haunts in your old neighborhoods and what do you find: they remain and have disappeared. The greasy spoon, the deli, the dry cleaner you scouted out when you first arrived and tried to make those new streets yours: they are gone.” This applies to this location, because I did some research and discovered there use to be another building where the cafĂ© now is, therefore when people return to Jay street one day they will want to know what happened to the place that the cafĂ© replace. That building is now gone and a new one took its place. Whitehead also said “Maybe we become New Yorkers the day we realize that New York will go on without us.” Meaning New York is always changing thus leaving different sensory in our neighborhoods even though we do not want change sometimes New York will keep evolving in the future with or without us.
