Sound Visualization: Phase 3 and 4

In this project, I learned how to make designs based on staccato and legato sounds. I have to say I struggled mostly with the staccato designs because my designs were way too complicated. What I did was refine of few of the staccato designs and made it more centered instead of all over the place. I also had a tough time picking staccato music since my earlier choices didn’t have much of an impact with the beat because of the instrument. Even though I came across some struggles, I had a lot of fun experimenting with this project. This project made me come up with designs I never knew I could come up with. Now as a final result I’ve created an animated mash up that has an African drumbeat mixed with a song called “Only You” by Winter Sonata. The time it took to complete this project was 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Perilous

adjective

full of danger

Source:http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/perilous

I’ve come across this word in the reading excerpt “A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport”. This word can be found in the sentence “Upon arriving in New York, he walked from Kennedy Airport to the nearby Crowne Plaza Hotel- a journey more perilous than he expected, because it involved a nighttime traverse of expressways with no curbs”. From learning what perilous meant, the journey for the protagonist Mr.Self  wasn’t an easy one as he came across tough roads. Also Mr.self’s journey from the airport to the hotel is in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Project #2: homework

I have decided to tackle on the subject of two different social status being next to each other. I find this intriguing because when actually looking at this example in person it gives off a bizarre feeling. My location consists of two stores that are found in two completely different boroughs which is Manhattan and The Bronx. Both of these boroughs hold reputations that contrast against each other. Manhattan is known as a place where you can make all your dreams come true and filled with such extravagance. Meanwhile The Bronx is known for being impoverished and dangerous due to high crime rates. By knowing the reputations of the two boroughs it gives of an odd feeling of being together. But at the same time it makes sense to place the contrasting stores next to one another because what makes up New York City is the five boroughs, not Manhattan on its own as most people portray it. My location being in Brooklyn seems to unify the other two boroughs while being a borough on its own instead of just being a mash up. From the reading excerpt “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead, the author states that “Except that probably we’re neighbors. That we walk past each other every day, and never knew it until now”. By this statement, with my location most people would just brush pass by it without noticing the great contrast it holds while being next to each other. Whitehead also mentions that everyone has their very own New York. So with someone staying within the New York they know that’s all they get live. My location holds three New Yorks which two that overlap while the third New York unifies them. If someone were to come to this location it’s as if they are expanding their New York by intertwining with the other New Yorks.

ENG Project #2 Draft

New York City is known as “The Concrete Jungle” that is filled with many different sights, smells, sounds, and attractions. When people explore this jungle they get lost in all the diversity that surrounds them. Not lost in a trying to figure out where to go kind of way but more in dream-like state. Each person has a unique experience when being in the city. New York City hold a reputation of being the place of opportunity and miracles. While the outsiders of city are filled with the idea that New York City is a grand utopia, the New Yorkers that have known the reality of this city would tell you otherwise. New York City is not all city considering Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx aren’t filled with the skyscrapers and busy streets. Some New Yorkers choose to live the luxurious lifestyle the city part has to offer. The others choose to live less frivolously in the lesser known areas of New York where it is more residential.

When thinking of Manhattan most people would think extravagant, stylish, and a place for opportunity. Manhattan is the borough that is filled with the interpretation of a utopia. With a cluster of tall buildings, bold bright lights filled with ads, many known name brand stores and famous restaurants altogether it’s no wonder Manhattan gets most the attention. To most people this is a place where you would find style no only in the streets but in the people as well. The people have a more chic look that would make you think that everyone is rich and likes to spend their money. Mostly when people hear New York City they think of the borough Manhattan since it has more of the iconic landmarks that New York City is known for such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, and The Statue of Liberty just to name a few. Manhattan is the borough that is more exposed from tourism while not much attention is paid to the rest of the boroughs that make up the city. The rest of the boroughs are not really looked at to be as special even though it is the five boroughs that make up the city as a whole.

However the Bronx would be the polar opposite of Manhattan. When thinking of the Bronx most people would think poor, ghetto, and dangerous. The Bronx is filled with many lesser known small business, smaller apartments and not as much opportunity that Manhattan has to offer. The Bronx is the recognized  birthplace of  hip hop and rap music which made the image of hood that The Bronx is mostly known for. In The Bronx you could most likely get away with crimes such as speeding, stealing and hopping the turnstile at the train station. While Manhattan is seen as a place of welcome , The Bronx is seen as you can’t mess with anyone there without getting mugged or shot. Also The Bronx is known as an impoverished, neglected, and otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime.

In the borough of Brooklyn there lies a location that brings a feeling of juxtaposition of two boroughs that would be considered polar opposites from one another. Right where the Fulton Mall and Lawrence Street is located we have two stores known as Dr.Jay’s and Banana Republic right next to each other. Banana Republic is a store that is mainly found the borough of Manhattan. While the store Dr.Jay’s would be mainly found in the borough of the Bronx. These stores are not only contrasting in terms of the boroughs they come from but also in fashion. Banana Republic contains clothing items that portrays a sophisticated, city look. While Dr.Jay’s contains clothing that portrays a ghetto, hood look. For someone who has experienced both boroughs, it feels bizarre placing these stores next to each other given the boroughs they are mainly found in. This part of Brooklyn puts the slum area with the city area making it feel like two other worldly lands are colliding against one another.

This location shows the diversity of what New York is known for. The higher class being next to the lower class is not only shown in these two stores but is shown in the people as well. The location shows people in business suits going about their day with people dressed in hoodies and sneakers. In this location it would feel as though people with their own vision of New York intertwine and make a new vision that could expand both of their views on New York as a whole. Each individual who have visited New York City has their own experience of what New York is to them. Some people may have a fantastic experience while another person may have a terrible one or neutral. New York City is the place to expands one vision on a diverse level.

Project #2: Including senses

As I was making my way towards my location, I walked through a busy street filled with different kinds of people, different kinds of smells from food carts, construction and honking cars. The lively area of Fulton Mall is filled with a variety of different stores all in one place. While walking I came across a Dr.Jays right next to Banana Republic. After seeing that I felt a bizarre feeling because Dr.Jays is usually a store you would find in the Bronx while Banana Republic is a store you would find in Manhattan. The juxtaposition here is that Manhattan is more of a welcoming, metropolis area that tourists like to flock to . On the other hand the Bronx is more of a hood area that most people would be afraid to be in. The overlap of these two stores is just odd since the locations that they primarily found in are completely different in terms of environment and social status.

Aft

adverb

: towards or at the back part of a boat, ship, or airplane.

Source:http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aft

I’ve come across this word in the reading excerpt “Reading Lucy”. This word can be found in the quote “So I’ll throw in another kiss and just an inchy wincy pinch on the aft end”. This quote came from a letter Lucy wrote to her husband Alfred when he left for boot camp. From learning what aft means, it would make sense that Lucy would be at an aft end because she was a mechanic at a Navy Yard in World War II. These letters were ways that Lucy could give her love to Alfred while he was away.

Sound Visualiazations: Phase 1

The song I chose is “Eternal Pose” which is the 15th ending of my favorite anime One Piece. In the beginning there’s a major legato feeling then there’s a staccato beat that is added in. With this song you get the feeling of these contrasting sounds in unison. In the staccato sketches, I felt the use of straight lines would represent a constant beat. The zig-zag lines represent transition into the more staccato feeling . The stars represent the snare drum sound I hear. The difference in line weight would show the on and off beat feeling. In the legato sketches, I felt the use of more curvy lines would represent the flow of notes that are held for a period of time from the violin. The repetition of circles would show represent the transition from one note to another from the guitar. The short curved lines would represent the cymbal crashes.

Each sketch took 30 mins(in total 6 hours)

You’ll pass by the Joseph J. and Violet J. Jacobs Building,Jay Metro station and Starbucks. Keep go straight on both Mytrle St and Willoughby St. Make a right turn on Jay St(Fulton Mall). You’ll pass by stores such as Gap, T-mobile, Modells Sporting Goods and Foot Locker. Keep going straight on Lawrence St. Stop at Dr.Jays and Banana Republic.
