The Final Portfolio

Dear Professor Schmerler,
As a student I have witnessed many ingenious teaching, and your teaching was one of them. This semester was a struggle for me in every class. I’ve had many obstacles that I had to face, and some I had to learn how to overcome them all by myself. In your class I learned a lot, and I actually payed a lot of attention in the class because It was both a fun, and interesting experience for me. Not only did I thought I was gonna learn the usual stuff they teach in English, but I got to learn new things that I know I’ll use in the future. An example would be the different genres that is used in any writings.
When it comes to writing essays I don’t really have the skills for it, however I’ve improved on what I needed to work on due to this class when we did all those grammar, and readings on people such as, Malcom X. I also improved because of the nice feedback that you give us. Overall I got a lot out of this semester with you professor, Schmerler.

Unit 1:
In unit one we had to share our fear, and cure without descending letters which was a great experience because It made me think more about it, and before I never really took it in consideration what I truly thought about my fear, and cure.
Fears & Antidote without descending letters
I have a fear of not able to see someone who is close to me ever. When we are too attached to another, we never want to break that bond. Humans are sensitive creatures. Not a lot of our kind can deal with death. Death is like cancer, but worst.
However there are some stuff we can do to reduce the risk, and we can think better rather than the cons.

Unit 2:
Unit two was different, totally a completely new style of writing for me. I was never aware of the genres that we were using in our life.

Unit 3:
I felt like unit three was a little confusing at first, but later on I got the hang of it, and sorta liked the idea of me telling everybody something that I was experiencing in my life. It was also the first time that I had really put thought into it.
Unit 3 Proposal – Inquiry/Research
Job interviews can be very stressful, and time consuming for everyone who’s trying to land their dream job, or regular employment. I feel like finding work can be over doing it for interviewees sometimes. The feeling of not knowing whether you aced your interview, or the fact that you got rejected because of a better candidate with a higher standard. We can start changing that in ways that could benefit both sides.
We come here today to bring light on both sides. We all know that interviewees can’t stress it enough when it comes to the result. We can all agree that we just want direct result. Having direct result will save time, and ultimately help the interviewees move on to the next career. Especially in New York City where jobs are very limited. While interviewers are only trying to find the best person that fit the expectation of their company, I think most of the time, smaller companies will have a longer duration of letting a person know if they got the job.
There will be many candidates that will feel like they did good, and are waiting on a acceptance, or some sort of message to acknowledge them that they got the job. This will also lead to a longer, or waste of time for them finding a job again. Having to reject someone on it is not a fun job to do. Therefore it is a waste of time.
I believe that they should make it more specific when jobs are looking for requirements from future candidate, also to let them hold a more comfortable interview so that they know the real them (interviewees). I think that If a company are holding a group interview then they should be let know on that day. Especially towards the youth, they experience this more because most of them don’t have a lot of experience yet, but the ones that do have experience are at an advantage.
Unit 4 – Multi Modal
In unit four I had to create any type of video essay, video sports interview, video diary, and podcast for what I did in unit 3. I made a video, and in the process I had fun because It was my classmates that helped me combine one video into two.

Freedom essay 2 (Revised)

Freedom through laws

Freedom today can almost be anything from, the freedom of being able to live, to the freedom being able to follow laws. We are born into a world today where we must obey laws, or else there would be consequences. Law is one of the most important factors in society today. Freedom to me is the result, and inspiration where one can do what they please without having to live in the shadows. Often, over the years, people have been incarcerated, and have died because society’s laws are advancing and we are caught up in the middle of it. Victims are sometimes forced to act violent in order to make changes in society. Laws can sometime be out of control, or abused. An example of an outrageous law is when China had placed a limit of having one offspring only. I was always that person that would wonder why some of the most unnecessary laws existed, and what would life be if they were never there.

As I got older, I began thinking about life more. There is a saying, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”, by Confucius. This quote applies to me every time I think about life. Laws are the most appealing to me in society. When I heard about someone becoming incarcerated I wonder if it was the criminal’s fault, or the law maker. I came to a conclusion that it was both party’s fault. My reasoning is because, when you create more laws it would mean more crimes. At the same time, it’s also the criminal’s decision for knowing there are laws, and decide to take matters violently instead of a peaceful way. I am not saying all laws should be free. Majority of them that people fight over today, and is to come in the near future would just make life easy if they were just gone.

There are many reasons why there would be laws. Laws, overtime can encourage people to form habits. What I mean by “encourage people to form habits” is the fact that back then laws/rules were formed to strengthen, and bring unity to people. People felt that it was the best option, and that these laws should keep on forming in order to preserve their peace. Therefore laws began to form continuously to the point where a country like North Korea, and China became communist countries. Some Laws can be beneficial, but some not so much.

Can there be a world where no laws exist ? That’s a very important question to a lot of people who cares, and don’t. I believe that having laws and certain laws is true freedom. Having a world where no laws exist would mean chaos. A great analogy of a world with no laws would be the movie called “The Purge”. Having laws is like freedom because, people are given chances. The ones that abuse the law are brainwashed into thinking it’s alright to keep disobeying, and that they’re gaining freedom, but in reality they are fighting a war.

Throughout life many people have been incarcerated for doing crimes, however when they are in prison they are restricted to the outside world activity. The incarceration of inmates and restricting them to connect with the outside world is like taking the right of someone’s life. Someone like Malcolm X who was a prisoner for 10 years was unable to do no more than read books only in prison as time passes. It is when we hit our lowest point that we are open to the greatest change, but sometimes we don’t get to fully embrace our possibilities, instead we are restricted by the rules that are put on our shoulders. Majority of the people in the U.S could likely be wrongly, and over incarcerated. The world’s incarceration number is steadily rising, as laws are formed so are crimes.

The closure of my freedom is the perspective of a lower magnitude of laws. My freedom has been restricted, laws are made where my comfort is steadily lowering. I believe laws are both important, and too much. My freedom isn’t backing down, and it’s not only affecting me, but also a lot others, some are more impacted than I am. I will always consider freedom as an act of being able to desire something, and executing that goal that we want. Therefore it’s nice to not have certain laws, but not too many, and not the unnecessary ones that makes our life harder.

UNIT 3 WORKSHEET 1 Note: the following are prompts to help you organize your work. Please make your answers clear and easy to read! Take all the space you need to answer the questions.

My general area of study is: Job interviews.

1. After doing some preliminary research, I am able to note below at least one argument / discussion / problem that surrounds my area of study:

  1. Job interviews often ask you questions like, “can you tell me a little about yourself ?”, there are arguments over this. Different sides argue that you shouldn’t tell them everything there is to about yourself. For example don’t tell them your complete employment , or personal history. There could be many questions asked in a interview, the questions also depends on the job, situation you are in. Job interviews often ask you questions about your personal life, however It’s important that we also do a little research about the job. Job interviews are time consuming when it comes to giving a response whether you got accepted, or rejected.

2. The people or community of people most affected by this problem are…:

2. Interviewees

3. Here are some key terms or phrases particularly associated with this issue. (For example, if your proposal is about hiking, you might use phrases like “manageable distances,” “maps,” “excursions,” “rough terrain,” “backpack,” “dehydration,” “survival in the elements,” “path finding,” et al.):

3. Application, hired, company, position, strength, weakness, greatest, achievement, challenge, interviewing, questions, time management, schedule, environment, late, early, prepare,

4. Here are the sources I have used so far to read about and otherwise learn about this issue. (Wikipedia, CNN, personal interviews, The New York Times, Psychology Today – whatever the source, please note it. Did you use the key terms you just listed, above, when you conducted your searches? If not, take some time and do so!):

Everyday genres

Genre could be many things as we speak. In society today, genre is used everywhere, however we don’t realize it but it’s very important to us. Genre is a form of style that we use to do things. Some examples that comes up in my mind are, rap, horror, action, adventure, comedy, country music, and etc.  My list of 10 genres that I encounter in my daily life are, Comedy, Rap, Pop, Drama, History, Science fiction, Sci-Fi, Biography, and Short story. Out of all the above if I had to choose two that I like best it would be comedy, and Short story. I favor these two genres because they are more beneficial to me than any of the others would. Comedy is introduced to people that wants to be humored, however while shorty story is for could be for almost anyone. Short story has a purpose which is to entertain, and get the readers to be hooked. The two genre, comedy, and short story are both using persuasion as a language being used on the audience. I say this because in a way comedy is the idea of trying to make you go against the logic that is being used, while short story also persuade you to keep reading because it makes you also fantasize about the situation.

Navigating genres

Facebook book is probably one of the most popular, and used social media out there. If I were to remember a couple years back, that time period is when I had used Facebook the most. However as of today I don’t see Facebook the same way as I use to. The reason for this is due to the rapid change, and friends. Majority of my friends left Facebook because there are a lot more better social media, and etc. Facebook back then aloud me to post all sorts of goofy stuff, so it’s also part of the fact that I am now an adult with more responsibilities. Now that I’m getting older, I began to realize that the older adults, friends, and relatives that I’m close with are adding posts, and a few pictures on their Facebook account. The older ones only post because they want to update the ones that they also know best in their life, unlike kids they have the audacity to post things even though they know that the friends they have on Facebook are complete strangers. My purpose for posting on Facebook is blurred, but adults older than not so much.

“Myspace Outage Leaves Millions Friendless.” Is my favorite.

I rarely have rules with me whenever I’m writing, but If I was to think of one it would be to have some sort of a attention grabber. I struggle the most with poems. Writing poems is like telling me to solve a triple digit multiplication problem without a calculator.

Shitty First drafts

My drafts composes more of the “down draft” part. When I write drafts I usually go for two. When I write my drafts I like to write everything that relates to my title. I like to always come up with a unique title first. After gathering everything that I need, I write my second draft, which is getting rid of anything irrelevant, or errors. The chapter’s title from the author did not shock me because I can relate. When I start a draft I feel like it’s at the very bottom of everyone else’s. My perspective on writing better has changed because of the steps that the author uses in “shitty first drafts”. I believe that by using the downdraft, updraft, and dental draft, it will help everyone become a better writer.
