Unit 1 – Language and Metacognition

Introduction:

I think that this unit was the most important unit out of all units. Within the first unit there were many vocabulary test and enhancing assignments. For example, we were assigned to work without words with certain letters, and write essays with that same constraint. What I am most proud of was my ability to adapt to these constraint assignments over time. On the other hand I feel like I could have written more to add a longer narrative to my essays during these assignments. Initially I had trouble finding words that could be used to convey way I wanted to describe, because of the constraints. Yet, over time I was able to do research on online dictionaries and find words that I wouldn’t typical use to continue my story.

Free World?

Today we pride ourselves on saying that we live in a free world. Despite having negative inclinations and responses to different races, religions and even genders. As humans we have a tendency of having negative feelings towards things, we do not understand without trying to learn about them. So, how do we expect for persons who subscribe to these categories to even feel some sense of freedom with in their communities? According to the oxford dictionary, freedom refers to the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. So, with that being stated, are we all truly free today in our so called “free world”? I think to truly be free is to live within a society that respects other’s differences. Not accept but respect these differences, we can’t all subscribe to everything within our societies. This is so, because we are all thought different things during our infancy. However, we can all respect these differences, as an aim to make everyone truly feel free as well as keeping harmony among ourselves.

When I moved to this country my dad would always warn me about how I would carry myself outside of the house. Being a teenager from the islands I never understood that these warnings were the result of the years of stereotypes made surrounding the black male, and how carrying myself a certain way can even be harmful to me. To be more specific, my dad would always warn me about leaving the house with my hoodie over my head. It was never my aim to seem cool or hood while wearing a hoodie. It’s just that it provided an extra layer of protection against the bitter cold of New York that I was still getting a custom to. As a result, I was not able to enjoy the freedom of wearing my clothes how I felt comfortable and even certain accessories. Consequently, because of a stereotype that made to generalize a certain race. So, Now tell me am I truly free?

Life is the most beautiful yet tragic experience we are ever going to have. As a result, we all hold onto or believe in something that is higher than ourselves when the trials of life come our way. I think this is the driving force behind religions. We are all taught different religions during our development as children and we all believe that each of our religions is the correct form of belief. As a result, we may not respect the other religions of the world. Simply because we are ignorant to what is being taught within these religions, consequently drawing inaccurate conclusions. For example, I believe the events of nine even has created if not increased a stereotype amongst Muslims and Islam. This stereotype is that all Muslims and persons of Islam are dangerous people and even terrorists. But my question to you is should persons of that religion feel scared to practice their religion because of the actions of a group of people that subscribe to their religion? I subscribe to Christianity, but I do have friends that practice Islam and they are some of the most peaceful persons I know. If we are to make the general population of this religion feel uncomfortable to practice their religion, are they truly free today in our “free world”?

Lastly, today we live in a world that is flooded with vehicles. To date, having a driver’s license and learning to drive has become as basic skill, as basic as learning to cook and clean. On 26 September 2017, King Salman issued an order to allow women to drive in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, women that lived in Saudi Arabia were not allowed to drive many years before that. I could these women truly feel free if they did not have the freedom to decide whether or not they wanted to drive? I conclusion do we really live in a free world?

Lipograms And General Constraint Writing:

Fear

As the elevator ascended, It felt as though we would climb towards the heavens. I was  both nervous and excited I  had never been to the empire state building before. It was only my second visit to New York, there were so many tourists cites to visit and this was one of them. At the summit of this giant of a building, New York was displayed in all its beauty. As I drew closer to the veranda , the idea of the welfare of I, the person with a fear becomes abstract. The idea of my greatest fears floods mind of I,  the person with a fear. As I endeavor to keep my mental health intact.

Cure

A voice reminds me, that I am scared since I empower it, it’s scary. And what i give energy to will surround me, it’s scary.

Unit 2 – Genre and Rhetoric

Introduction:

This unit empowered me as an English student to step outside of my typical genre of writing. I typically would simply just write essays for my English classes in college every semester. I was never asked to even think about any other way of writing. What I am most proud of in this genre is what I learnt from researching about my new genres, for example I learned terms used in poetry. I feel like I could have analyzed my genres better and written more. The only challenge I would say I had was adapting to the new way of writing. I overcame this challenge by looking at examples of this form of writing.

Genre Switch 2

Genre Example – Genius(Meaning To Lyrics Videos)

Song – “Land of the Free” by. JoeyBad$$

Yeah

You know sometimes I think they don’t truly understand me you know

‘Cause they don’t

Can’t change the world ‘less we change ourselves

Die from the sicknesses if we don’t seek the health

All eyes be my witness when I speak what’s felt

Analysis

My example is a Genius Lyrical meaning video, the video is about a song called “Land of the Free” By recording artist JoeyBad$$. The purpose of this genre is to inform and educate viewers about the meaning behind an artist’s song lyrics. The lyrics of the song are displayed on the screen and the artist discusses each fragment of the overall song and what he or she meant by each line/bar. Artist also take this time to describe the process that they took to create the overall song, processes such as life experiences, books that they  read that inspired them or even things that they had seen on the news. I think that this genre would appeal to a younger audience because of the necessity of technology and the internet to access these videos. Also, I think that it would appeal to a music creating and consuming audience. For example, producers, song writers and not forgetting music lovers. Lasty, Being able to see the lyrics on the screen as well as having the artist add more detail to the lyrics makes the overall piece of writing more vivid in my opinion.

My Version

Creating Art

Think about your preferred surface

Maybe sharpen a pencil or two

Allowing your inspiration to surface

If you settle on paper

Use a pen or a pencil

Because paint may look a mess later

Maybe you choose a canvas

Then put away those sharp pencils

Because you can use paint at last

Has your inspiration showed up?

Maybe that is the case

Then let it guide you without a stop.

Unit 3 – Inquiry / Research

Introduction:

I liked this unit because I was allowed to present and make my argument for something I cared about, that something was the purpose of art. Also, I gained knowledge through doing research to find facts and figures that would empower and strengthen my overall argument. What I am most proud of in this unit was that I was actually able to make a decent argument for my claims. I felt like I could have gotten more personal opinions as oppose to facts and figures. I over came this by doing a survey with a few people at the school.

Research Proposal

I ask you to internally ask yourself this question, the question is what is the purpose of art? Art has been around for as many as 40,000 years, yet there is no clear purpose acknowledged for art. Many people claim that art in general can’t evolve or convey any higher meaning, than simply being arts and craft activities that infants part-take in in Pre-K.

I am strongly against this claim, I feel like art was and is the backbone that drove forward humanity that we know today for many reasons. I believe that this inquiry will benefit people who study history, people who study communication design and persons who create art themselves. In conclusion I feel that there should be a discussion opened about art in more meaningful aspects of life. For example, the possibility that art helped to create history. As well, that language as we know it today evolved from art and that perusing fine art today is a smart career choice.
