My name is Nadia Douglas. I had a great day today.  I teach little children between ages 2 and 5 years old.  I reminded myself that today is going to be day one of school.  I did not make any arrangements with any other co-worker to hold on for me in my classroom, so I told myself that I would be late for class on my first day.  I left my job at 6′ O Clock.  My  class starts at 6’O clock.   Sometimes I  drive to school, but today I decided to  leave my car at school where I work and take a train.  I was glad when I made that decided because it did cut down on some time while trying to get here.  Usually it takes about 15 mins by train.

Donald Murray: Internal revision: A Process of Discovery

  • Writing is the using of words or language to convey a message or experience. The writer may be completely oblivious of the “meaning of her experience”, or what she wants to tell her readers. she writes to discover the true meaning of her experience, and then rewrites until she thinks that she wrote everything that she wants to say.

The purpose of writing is to discover the inner feelings of the writer, and to communicate it. Quoting Ellie Wiesel’s words, “I write in order to understand as much as to be understood”.

  • By “discovery”– which he says is an important part of the revision process- Donald Murray means that through writing and rewriting and going over the revision process the writer sees stories forming that he himself was not aware of. These are plots or developments in the story that the writer did not intentionally plan before his discovery.

By using the term “ignorance” Donald Murray means that most writers don’t know what they want to say when they start writing. In the re vison stage, they discover what they truly want to tell their readers about their experience.

  • Product is the final writing. Process is the writing through which that “product” should be reached.
  • Internal revision: During internal revision the writer reads her first draft and discovers her position on the subject. Then using language, structure and research information she develops what she has discovered. She only listens to her inner self during internal revision to make sure she says what she really wants to say. The writer is like a hiker who got lost in a cold hiking trail. She has created spark in some dry moss and is carefully analyzing the situation and is now patiently adding twigs. she smiles as she sees her embers slowly turn into a blazing fire.
  • External revision: During external revision the writer edits what she has written. She does not change what she has to say (the discovery she had during internal revision), and only tweaks her writing in a way that would make sense to her readers.
  • By “content” Murray probably means the research content the writer accumulated before she wrote her first draft. He could also refer to the content of the writers first draft.

Structure is the way the writer writes her paper.

I am very comfortable posting or writing in Facebook. I don’t feel restricted when i want to express myself passionately in Facebook, unlike in an academic writing, and I don’t have to worry about writing formally either. I know that I won’t be graded on my writings, which is also very relieving.

I think I do feel more comfortable than my grandpa about posting in Facebook. I have had a Facebook account for a long time and my grandpa doesn’t even know what Facebook is. Over the years, I have seen a lot of other people’s writings In Facebook, and have written quite a few posts myself.  Being in the internet every day also feeds me with a lot of content to talk about. My grandpa may capitalize all his words, post his same writing multiple times, beat around the bush too much and not be specific and straightforward. He may also lack the witty or funny style of writing that people prefer to read in the internet/Facebook. I think he would get angry about how disrespectful people are in the internet and just rage quit his account. But it is also true that there are a lot of older people who are very knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to composing a piece of writing in this genre.

I like “free-flow” writing and try not to strangle my thoughts with a strictly followed genre style. That’s why I have problems with writing traditional type essays, where it is required to do very specific things, like writing a thesis statement in the introduction, etc.

In the “Onion” my favorite title example was “Study: Dolphins not so intelligent on land. They are stating a very obvious thing in their “study”, which is sarcastic and funny.

Local Pizza Parlors vs. Chain Pizza Franchise: The Better Pizza

Pizza is one of America’s favorite food. The mouth-watering flat, open-faced baked pie of Italian origin, consisting of a thin layer of bread dough topped with spiced tomato sauce and cheese, often garnished with anchovies, sausage slices, mushrooms, etc. originated from Gaeta, Italy in 997 AD.  In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in New York, United States of America. In the present time, there are two types of pizza joints in the US: local pizza joints and chain pizza franchises. The lingering question of which is better of the two has been a long debate.

Local pizzerias are the place to satisfy one’s hunger. Chain pizza franchise can be found in every corner of the States. On the other hand, local pizza parlors can only be found within the area, therefore, caters only a number of customers.

On the other hand, chain pizza franchise takes pride of their distinct taste in which the regular costumers go to whenever they need a pizza fix, unlike local pizza parlors where customers are uncertain as to the overall taste of their pizzas. Moreover, chain pizza franchise already had made its mark in the industry that they must uphold the name of the franchise at all times. Local pizza parlors, on the other hand, are more experimental on making artisanal pizza, which somehow, turns disastrous at times.

Local produce or ingredients are used by local pizza parlors which make them unique from other pizzerias. However, these ingredients may not be readily be available; since, some are seasonal. For this reason, local pizza parlors can be inconsistent with its menu. On the contrary, chain pizza franchise has ready and available ingredients that could last for a long time. The latter’s quality of pizza is known upon arrival.

At times, people crave for pizza at the later time of the day had only the option to order from chain pizza rather than the local pizza parlor since the former closes in the later time of the day. The availability of the pizza of the chain pizza franchise during anytime of the day gives appeal to its customers. Therefore, local pizzas have only become an option because of its accessibility.

Lastly, local pizza chains are mostly expensive since it uses fresher ingredients and are less greasy than chain pizza franchise. The profit of the local pizza parlors is also dependent on the price range of their ingredients; they rarely give discounts, unlike chain pizza franchises, which, are extravagant, to the point that they have promos such as Buy One Get One (BOGO) pizzas.

Loyal eating customers look for consistency in a product, to which case, the chain franchise can cater its customers. Chain pizza franchise deems to cater more to the customers than local pizza parlors by quality, accessibility, availability and price. Therefore, branded pizza franchise is the place in time of need.

Everyday genres

Genre could be many things as we speak. In society today, genre is used everywhere, however we don’t realize it but it’s very important to us. Genre is a form of style that we use to do things. Some examples that comes up in my mind are, rap, horror, action, adventure, comedy, country music, and etc.  My list of 10 genres that I encounter in my daily life are, Comedy, Rap, Pop, Drama, History, Science fiction, Sci-Fi, Biography, and Short story. Out of all the above if I had to choose two that I like best it would be comedy, and Short story. I favor these two genres because they are more beneficial to me than any of the others would. Comedy is introduced to people that wants to be humored, however while shorty story is for could be for almost anyone. Short story has a purpose which is to entertain, and get the readers to be hooked. The two genre, comedy, and short story are both using persuasion as a language being used on the audience. I say this because in a way comedy is the idea of trying to make you go against the logic that is being used, while short story also persuade you to keep reading because it makes you also fantasize about the situation.
