My Journey – Final Reflection
Dear Professor,
My journey throughout this semester was refreshing. It was a totally different experience than my first English semester. This style of the class made it easier for me to break out of my shell. Having the opportunity to share my work in a circle was motivating because I felt supported and acknowledged. Giving the chance to introverts to participate and to be free to express their real thoughts without any judgments was challenging but helpful. With the sharing in a circle, I was able to relate to many of my classmates. We all have different writing format but share the same characteristics in life college, friendship, work, stress, and relationships. Personally, I think my writing wasn’t the best dealing with many grammar issues made realize that I still have problems to fix. However, this class taught me a lot from respecting my classmates to listen to the amazing writing classmates.

                                Unit 1
Unit one was very shocking and confusing for me. The fact that I was going to be limited in using letters in my assignments was strange. We did a constraint writing that was writing without descending letter on fear and one without ascending letters on the cure. The task was challenging in the beginning because most of us are not used to changes and these types of restrictions but it works out okay. I realized a person can bring out their creativity through having limitations. We also wrote a freedom essay in which we describe freedom to our point of view. Personally, I believe freedom is having the opportunity to use time in the way you want. Being free to express yourself and having people around you that support and motivate you to thrive to become the person you are will be what freedom is to me. We also wrote reflections on âNavigating genresâ which was one of my favorite.
                                                             Unit 2
Unit two was more challenging for me because it requires me finding what my skill is. I believe that I’m a good cook who is not afraid to try new things. During this unit, we were asked to write a recipe for something we do well. We had to choose different genres for our topics. Giving steps to be a cook was tricky for me because my skill doesn’t require much but does need the patience of a person. Then we had to think         Â
Page 3
about who we were writing this for. We had to impact and teach the audience the importance of our skill. I enjoyed writing the recipe for a good relationship.
Unit 3
Unit three was a little complicated for me at the moment. I know I had to use the previous assignments to write my research. I wrote an essay in which I explained a situation in which women are categorized in being cooks.
Unit 4
Unit four was extremely difficult for since I’m not good at making digital versions of an assignment. I got anxious and nervous knowing that I had to create a video about my topic. I decided to make a podcast in which I interviewed a friend about my topic and realize how everyone has different perspectives than me.

Fear
I believe that I don’t have fears. I’ve been hurt by insects. Some even made me lose consciousness. However, there is one fear I have which is fireworks. I know a friend that his face reconstructed because of denotation. Chunks of meat and flesh had to be removed from the floor and walls in case it was needed later on.

Respond to âShitty First Draftsâ
When I write essay my initial routine is to write many thoughts that I have. I was not surprised by the chapterâs title at all. As I read the title I knew I was going to able to relate to the author. When she described that she would sit down with her notes reminded me of the steps I take to when writing essays. In my opinion changing the way I write wonât have to change at all in order to write a âshitty first draftâ.
Navigating Genres
To be honest Iâm not very confident in writing a piece based on the genre of Facebook. Yes, i might have more knowledge about this type of social media than an adult. Some parents and grandparents are not familiar with even using a phone because âitâs a lot of technology for meâ what my mom says all the time. Unlike us millennials who are attracted to ours phones. Older people might have difficulty communicating through Facebook unlike us who can text four people in different social media. My favorite tiptoe from Dirks newspaper The Onion would be âMyspace Outrage Leaves Millions Friendlessâ which made me laugh a bit because I remember that during that time it was one of the most popular social media and now mostly everyone forgot about it.

Essay Research
The purpose of my research is to show that women can be a successful chef. Men dominate the industry as chefs. However many people believe women arenât capable of having a stressful and tough job like being in a kitchen. As a female I believe that men always try to women look like sassy or arrogant if they are successful chefs. However men are applauded for being strong willed and stubborn. In a article named â Iâm a Women and a Chef. I Shouldnât Have to Care If You Like Meâ in a female chef who participated in a âTop Chefâ was winner of the first season. During the competition she got negative feedback on her attitude.
She is able to describe the struggle women go through in the industry. Her experience demonstrates that it is difficult to achieve your accomplishments as a woman in a industry dominated by men. Sometimes being power can intimidate others. Meanwhile, many females make their their way to the top pushing aside the boundaries that men might create on the way. Thatâs the reason why sometimes women might come of as a âArrogantâ referred in the article. Â

My Journey
This class was very unique. Itâs my first English class that didnât have any tests such as the midterm and the final. Our first couple of constraint writing assignments were tedious, but it gave me a new way to approach writing. This was my first year in college and I was still adjusting to a college level environment. I struggled in following in what we were doing. I had a difficult time in placing my work and social life with school. Unlike my other classes, this class felt like it wasnât about teaching us english, but it was about teaching us to communicate with strangers and to get any information off them for us to think about when we read or write. I canât say that I took all of this into consideration, but I can say that this class gave me a new perspective on how to view and approach other classes.
Unit 1
This unit was our first unit that we covered in class. The first assignments were constraint writings with a formal essay at the end. I enjoyed the constraint writing assignments because it gave me the opportunity to brainstorm and think of synonyms which is something that we donât do often. One specific constraint writing assignment was about your fear without descending letters and the second part was finding a cure. This assignment was fun because I have never written about my fears before. The freedom essay was also part of this unit. Iâm not a fan of writing essays , but this essay was about my own experience with freedom and what it means to me. Thus, I found it easy to connect to.
Unit  2
Unit 2 was the most fun unit of the class. The recipe assignment was extremely fun. My special skill was building computers. When I started to write down the recipe, everything came out smoothly. I did not struggle at all because building a pc is very easy to me and I know all the steps. The 2nd assignment was to take this skill and turn it into another genre. I had decided to make a reddit style dialogue between Windows and Mac consumers. I enjoyed this one because I am in favored of one side only.
Unit 3
This unit confused me at first. The assignment for this unit was an inquiry research project.I couldnât find a big problem with my skill in building computers, so I changed my research topic to my major in Graphic Design. The issue in graphic design was the career itself. Like other jobs, there will be flaws in it. I think that a graphic designer is underrated on how much work that they have to do to please everyone. That is why I decided to make my research project on graphic designing.
Unit 4
For unit 4, we had to make a digital genre for our research topic. I decided to make a magazine layout satire style for graphic designers. It took me a while to find images that showed certain problems in graphic designers. At the end, I enjoyed this assignment because I got to use inDesign.
Unit 1Â
Fear
I recognized some ways in overcoming my worries of passing away, minus the expert assistance. First, gain a grasp on your worries of passing away by comparing your anxiety to your worries of passing away, Recognize the connection on anxiety to anticipation. Ignore any issues that you canât sway or control, such as  age and time. Review and recognize how life and passing away are in the same cycle. Finally, gain support from a mental health therapist.
FreedomÂ
Freedom is the right and power to choose on what you say , think , and act without hindrance or restraint. Most of us bring unique and different perspectives of freedom. The most common freedom rights that we come across in America , usually on a daily basis, is to travel, read, write , and express ourselves. Unlike us, other countries arenât in favor with the same rights that we have. I personally think that freedom is power in choosing your own actions and beliefs at your own risk. With all of your experience, freedom will make you self- secured with yourself. Being self-secured means to be happy with yourself through all of your hardships and experiences in life. We have the ability and power to choose what we want, but many of us decide to stay quiet.
We should all ask ourselves on the things we have done in our lives and if they were conflicted by someone or something. Did that thing affect you mentally or physically? Or both?
Having restraint or conflict is a sign of opposing the power and right of freedom. Most of us take advantage of this and ignore how important freedom is. As I mentioned before, being self-secured plays a main factor when it comes to freedom and experiences. Many of us might failed or had a bad experience with freedom, but being self-secured at the end is a major part of it. Self-security lets you know more about yourself and no one knows you more than yourself. Usually, freedom is restrained by someone. They are against your actions or beliefs because they think of the opposite of it. You might agree or disagree , but in the end, it makes you to reconsider your freedom. Itâs not particularly a good or bad thing. It lets you rethink on your freedom.
Since I was in elementary school and all the way to high school, my mom was very strict in making me this âperfect and successful person.â Â She would appoint me to music classes and private tutoring sessions. These classes were usually after school or on weekends. At that time
and till now, I play video games all day. My perspective of freedom was choosing what I wanted to do , but I didnât have a choice to decide if I wanted to take the classes. My mom would always tell me that itâs already paid for and I would always attend them. Yet, It didnât disclose  that I was interested or entertained while doing so. My grades werenât doing so well either. My mom would always listen to her friends and tell me what their sons and daughters were doing. I have a sister and she is older, but unlike me, she is successful. She is in her last year of college to get her masterâs  degree in psychology. During my junior year in high school, my mom decided to lay off and let me act on my own. I took advantage of that and I would lie to her on my progress in school. Till this day, I regret all the things that I didnât do. I was genuinely given the freedom in education , but I neglected it. Through this experience, I learned how to gain a better perspective in life with responsibilities. After all of this, I thought that I had a gaming addiction. I would ignore any life responsibilities and leave them last-minute. My family and friends were invisible  in my life. I would barely see them throughout my years. My new perspective of freedom was choosing how to fix this with my risk. I decided to lay off my games and focus on myself. I feel more self-secured with myself after changing my bad habits.
Most of us learn to take actions and better ourselves when we are in a low state of hardships. In âLearning to Redâ , by Malcolm X, it states, âAs you can imagine, especially in a prison where there was heavy emphasis on rehabilitation, an inmate was smiled upon if he demonstrated an unusually intense interest in books. There was a sizable number of well-read inmates, especially the popular debaters. Some were said by many to be practically walking encyclopedias. They were almost celebrities. No university would ask any student to devour literature as I did when this new world opened to me, of being able to read and understand.â
This shows how someone like Malcolm who was in prison, learned how to read on his own. His hardship was being in prison and he took it upon himself to fix and better himself by learning how to read. He spent his time in prison, learning and reading the dictionary. Later on, he becomes one of the most powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s.
Freedom has different meanings and perspectives. Most of us views freedom as a way better ourselves mentally or physically. You are the one that picks and changes on what you believe and act on. Malcolm X showed an example of his own experience of change and responsibility after being sentenced to prison for 7 years. We all get to pick how we act in our own ways and itâs up to the individual to treat the changes and conflicts in any way.

Genre DialogueÂ
Mac Vs PC
Mac Vs Pc
Genre – Dialogue
Users: Mac Fan, Pc Fan,, Undecided Consumer,
and Mutual Consumer
MAC VS PC, WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
Mutual Consumer: Mac has a bigger entry price with quality and it displays more artsy. Pc is more affordable and more heavily geared for your typical consumer.
Pc Fan: Nah Bro, PC, fuck Apple.
Mac Fan: Well, aside from that personâs intellectual point, Macs donât generally get viruses like Pc does.
Pc Fan: First of all, Pc users who get viruses are generally stupid enough to get a virus. You get viruses because you willingly downloaded a virus. Also, Mac is expensive and their hardware is literally the same shit as windows, but more expensive.
Mac Fan: Having built in safety from any virus is still a useful thing to have. Not everyone is perfect. Also, our Macbooks have built-in cameras and we get free softwares like Garage Band, iMovie, and Image Capture, It should benefit designers and editors with a better quality. Pc
doesnât have these gadgets.
Pc Fan: Mac is still shit, youâre taking quality over performance. Pc doesnât have these built in gadgets, but we can easily find free softwares online. Talk to me when you want to play games on your Mac.
Undecided  Consumer: Youâre basically saying that if youâre a designer or an editor, then you should go for a Mac. Pc has more geared hardware which is generally used for gaming.
Mac Fan: Yes, I think itâs preference over the consumerâs personal use with the computer.
Pc Fan: Thatâs one thing that I can agree on, but donât use your shitty gadgets as a bait to buy a mac.
Mac Fan: Iâm not using it as bait , but I was stating facts on what Macs offer.
Mutual Consumer: Mac and Pc can be used for work, school, etc. Mac is more expensive than Pc, but it depends on what you wanna do on it. If you want to design, get a mac and if you want to play games then get a Pc.
Undecided Consumer: Yea, that sums up on what everyone said. Any thoughts on Linux?
Pc: lol get the fuck out dumbass.
Mac: Look somewhere else.
Mutual Consumer: Sorry bud. Youâre on your own lol. Â
Unit 3Â
Topic: Graphic Design
Is graphic designing difficult/stable and a high demanded career? This research topic will benefit those who are in the Communication Design field or those who are interested in this field. Economic questions about web designing will be discussed. Web designing looks to be in need in the next upcoming years. From my own research, upcoming companies need web designers to promote them. Because of the need for this position, a web designerâs salary could possibly be higher in the next couple of years. The current average salary for a graphic designer is $43,540 a year. According to PayScale, it says, âThe average pay for a Web Designer is $43,540 Â per year.â Of course, this depends on who you work for or if youâre a freelance. A freelance is someone who works for multiple companies at different times rather than being permanently employed by one company. Being a freelancer lets you pay off your expenses such as computer, office furniture , and software applications that you need.
Is it hard to get into this field? This field is part of the communication design major. This major requires you to put a lot of dedication and time to practice your skills in graphic design. Some principles that you want to master is typography and usage of adobe cc applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. If youâre interested in drawing or hand drawing things rather than graphic design with technology, then it will be much harder for you. According to ThoughtCo, being a fine artist takes an extreme amount of work. It entails that you must accept any changes that may come such as, changing your style, understanding different cultures, and know that not everyone agrees with your work.As of right now, most graphic design jobs require you to know the usage of adobe cc applications. Having a job as a hand drawing artist will be hard, but it can be achieved with the right mindset and dedication.
There are some things to know when youâre a web designer on the job. Dealing with clients can be difficult and itâs your job to know how to deal with them and communicate with them. Remember that your client doesnât know the principles of graphic design and they may have a different idea on what they want. Working on a project for a job is like doing a project in school which means that it wonât work out in the first try. In other words, your first time or first draft wonât be perfect and this will require you to have a lot of dedication towards  your work. A very important thing to have is a portfolio. Go out and make a name for yourself, so you can get hired and recognized. This can be very useful if youâre planning to be a freelancer. Being a freelancer lets you work from your home, work on multiple projects, learn on the job, and choose which projects to work on. But , always remember that you need to find clients. A fine web designer will always be working to get to the top.

Unit 1 – Language and Metacognition
Introduction:
I think that this unit was the most important unit out of all units. Within the first unit there were many vocabulary test and enhancing assignments. For example, we were assigned to work without words with certain letters, and write essays with that same constraint. What I am most proud of was my ability to adapt to these constraint assignments over time. On the other hand I feel like I could have written more to add a longer narrative to my essays during these assignments. Initially I had trouble finding words that could be used to convey way I wanted to describe, because of the constraints. Yet, over time I was able to do research on online dictionaries and find words that I wouldnât typical use to continue my story.

Free World?
Today we pride ourselves on saying that we live in a free world. Despite having negative inclinations and responses to different races, religions and even genders. As humans we have a tendency of having negative feelings towards things, we do not understand without trying to learn about them. So, how do we expect for persons who subscribe to these categories to even feel some sense of freedom with in their communities? According to the oxford dictionary, freedom refers to the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. So, with that being stated, are we all truly free today in our so called âfree worldâ? I think to truly be free is to live within a society that respects otherâs differences. Not accept but respect these differences, we canât all subscribe to everything within our societies. This is so, because we are all thought different things during our infancy. However, we can all respect these differences, as an aim to make everyone truly feel free as well as keeping harmony among ourselves.
When I moved to this country my dad would always warn me about how I would carry myself outside of the house. Being a teenager from the islands I never understood that these warnings were the result of the years of stereotypes made surrounding the black male, and how carrying myself a certain way can even be harmful to me. To be more specific, my dad would always warn me about leaving the house with my hoodie over my head. It was never my aim to seem cool or hood while wearing a hoodie. Itâs just that it provided an extra layer of protection against the bitter cold of New York that I was still getting a custom to. As a result, I was not able to enjoy the freedom of wearing my clothes how I felt comfortable and even certain accessories. Consequently, because of a stereotype that made to generalize a certain race. So, Now tell me am I truly free?
Life is the most beautiful yet tragic experience we are ever going to have. As a result, we all hold onto or believe in something that is higher than ourselves when the trials of life come our way. I think this is the driving force behind religions. We are all taught different religions during our development as children and we all believe that each of our religions is the correct form of belief. As a result, we may not respect the other religions of the world. Simply because we are ignorant to what is being taught within these religions, consequently drawing inaccurate conclusions. For example, I believe the events of nine even has created if not increased a stereotype amongst Muslims and Islam. This stereotype is that all Muslims and persons of Islam are dangerous people and even terrorists. But my question to you is should persons of that religion feel scared to practice their religion because of the actions of a group of people that subscribe to their religion? I subscribe to Christianity, but I do have friends that practice Islam and they are some of the most peaceful persons I know. If we are to make the general population of this religion feel uncomfortable to practice their religion, are they truly free today in our âfree worldâ?
Lastly, today we live in a world that is flooded with vehicles. To date, having a driverâs license and learning to drive has become as basic skill, as basic as learning to cook and clean. On 26 September 2017, King Salman issued an order to allow women to drive in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, women that lived in Saudi Arabia were not allowed to drive many years before that. I could these women truly feel free if they did not have the freedom to decide whether or not they wanted to drive? I conclusion do we really live in a free world?
Lipograms And General Constraint Writing:
FearÂ
As the elevator ascended, It felt as though we would climb towards the heavens. I was both nervous and excited I had never been to the empire state building before. It was only my second visit to New York, there were so many tourists cites to visit and this was one of them. At the summit of this giant of a building, New York was displayed in all its beauty. As I drew closer to the veranda , the idea of the welfare of I, the person with a fear becomes abstract. The idea of my greatest fears floods mind of I, the person with a fear. As I endeavor to keep my mental health intact.
Cure
A voice reminds me, that I am scared since I empower it, it’s scary. And what i give energy to will surround me, it’s scary.
Unit 2 – Genre and Rhetoric
Introduction:
This unit empowered me as an English student to step outside of my typical genre of writing. I typically would simply just write essays for my English classes in college every semester. I was never asked to even think about any other way of writing. What I am most proud of in this genre is what I learnt from researching about my new genres, for example I learned terms used in poetry. I feel like I could have analyzed my genres better and written more. The only challenge I would say I had was adapting to the new way of writing. I overcame this challenge by looking at examples of this form of writing.
Genre Switch 1.
Recipe
Creating Art
Ingredients:
- A drawing surface – paper or canvas or anything that can be written or painted on.
- drawing instrument – pencils, pens, paint brushes or anything that can drawn or painted with
Instructions:
- Begin to search for inspiration. this could be a resent movie to looked at, maybe recent music you listened to or even the current emotion that you are feeling.
- Once you find that inspiration convert it into an image on your drawing surface. don’t think about it just let your inspiration take you and your drawing instrument where ever it takes you.
Genre Switch 2
Genre Example – Genius(Meaning To Lyrics Videos)
Song â âLand of the Freeâ by. JoeyBad$$
Yeah
You know sometimes I think they don’t truly understand me you know
‘Cause they don’t
Can’t change the world ‘less we change ourselves
Die from the sicknesses if we don’t seek the health
All eyes be my witness when I speak what’s felt
Analysis
My example is a Genius Lyrical meaning video, the video is about a song called âLand of the Freeâ By recording artist JoeyBad$$. The purpose of this genre is to inform and educate viewers about the meaning behind an artistâs song lyrics. The lyrics of the song are displayed on the screen and the artist discusses each fragment of the overall song and what he or she meant by each line/bar. Artist also take this time to describe the process that they took to create the overall song, processes such as life experiences, books that they read that inspired them or even things that they had seen on the news. I think that this genre would appeal to a younger audience because of the necessity of technology and the internet to access these videos. Also, I think that it would appeal to a music creating and consuming audience. For example, producers, song writers and not forgetting music lovers. Lasty, Being able to see the lyrics on the screen as well as having the artist add more detail to the lyrics makes the overall piece of writing more vivid in my opinion.
My Version
Creating Art
Think about your preferred surface
Maybe sharpen a pencil or two
Allowing your inspiration to surface
If you settle on paper
Use a pen or a pencil
Because paint may look a mess later
Maybe you choose a canvas
Then put away those sharp pencils
Because you can use paint at last
Has your inspiration showed up?
Maybe that is the case
Then let it guide you without a stop.
Unit 3 – Inquiry / Research
Introduction:
I liked this unit because I was allowed to present and make my argument for something I cared about, that something was the purpose of art. Also, I gained knowledge through doing research to find facts and figures that would empower and strengthen my overall argument. What I am most proud of in this unit was that I was actually able to make a decent argument for my claims. I felt like I could have gotten more personal opinions as oppose to facts and figures. I over came this by doing a survey with a few people at the school.
Â
Research Proposal
I ask you to internally ask yourself this question, the question is what is the purpose of art? Art has been around for as many as 40,000 years, yet there is no clear purpose acknowledged for art. Many people claim that art in general canât evolve or convey any higher meaning, than simply being arts and craft activities that infants part-take in in Pre-K.
I am strongly against this claim, I feel like art was and is the backbone that drove forward humanity that we know today for many reasons. I believe that this inquiry will benefit people who study history, people who study communication design and persons who create art themselves. In conclusion I feel that there should be a discussion opened about art in more meaningful aspects of life. For example, the possibility that art helped to create history. As well, that language as we know it today evolved from art and that perusing fine art today is a smart career choice.

Unit 4 – Multi-Modal
Introduction:
