Genre-Menu description

For my genre, I choose my major Hospitality Management. Right now I’m learning how to become a chef that understands some kitchen skill and structure. Also I was learning how to write a menu description up to standard. Menu description usually writes by the chef who is know everything about kitchen and plate costing. Also menu description helps customers easy to understand what ingredients in the food. When it is written well, the description conveys the soul of the restaurant and lead to higher profits. The chef is the speaker who describes the menu by using professional and special words to telling the customer as an audience. Such as “trigger ingredient”, “colorful”, “flavorful”, “lightly”, “stronger”.

“Wall Street Journal: Investigators in New York have ‘gathered more evidence than previously known’ in Trump hush money probe”

By Devan Cole, CNN

Updated 5:27 PM ET, Wed April 10,2019

Federal investigators in New York have “gathered more evidence than previously known” from individuals in the President’s “inner circle,” related to the hush-money payments made to two women who claim they had affairs with President Donald Trump, Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

According to the paper, prosecutors in the Manhattan US Attorney’s office interviewed Hope Hicks, the former White House communications director and longtime confidante of Trump, last spring and Keith Schiller, the President’s longtime bodyguard.

The paper also said investigators “learned of calls” between Schiller and David Pecker, the head of American Media Inc., the company that publishes the National Enquirer. Pecker worked with Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, to suppress potentially damaging claims made against candidate Trump by women, with AMI using a tabloid tactic called “catch and kill.”

Additionally, the Journal reported that investigators “possess a recorded phone conversation” between Cohen and a lawyer who represented the two women. Trump has denied having affairs with Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, and Karen McDougal.

The paper said the investigators obtained information about Trump’s involvement in the payments “weeks before” Cohen implicated the President in the scheme during a court appearance last year.

According to the Journal, during a previously reported raid of Cohen’s home, office and hotel room last summer, investigators seized “a recording of a September 2017 phone call” between Cohen and Keith Davidson, Daniels’ attorney at the time. The call, the paper said, “was sparked by an inquiry to Mr. Davidson from a City National Bank client manager, asking about funds the lawyer had transferred” to Daniels. Davidson, according to the paper, was “worried that the bank’s singling out of the payment might mean the transaction was under federal investigation,” while Cohen, who had been recording the call, “didn’t indicate he was alarmed,” the paper said.

The Journal also said following the raid, investigators asked Hicks “about her contacts” with Pecker. They also asked “at least one other witness” about whether or not Hicks had “coordinated” with anyone at AMI as she was crafting a response to an inquiry from the Journal for a November 2016 story. The paper was working on a report about an AMI payment to McDougal for the rights to her story of an alleged affair with Trump.

As for Schiller, the Journal said investigators “were aware” Schiller “had spoken by phone” to Pecker and were looking to find out if the bodyguard had ever given the phone to Trump. The Journal said it “couldn’t determine what investigators learned.”

Wrestling Injuries In High School
Wrestling is a very competitive sport. It consists of using your hands ,feet and you can use your body as a weapon to defend yourself from any take downs.

Some setbacks in the sport are getting injured by another wrestler or hurting yourself from an overly aggressive move. Another big factor that may cause your fighting abilities to be stressed is fighting on an empty stomach. There are limitations that fighters must follow. In some fights some opponents tend to break these rules, leading to much  more serious injuries. The first rule wrestlers in High School all know is to wrestler in folkstyle, not in freestyle. The second rule is not to do dangerous moves of any style. For example Alex is an 18 year old student at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School. Alex was one of the captains of the Franklin D. Roosevelt wrestling team. He was a very hard worker who always came to practice and try to push his team to do better and give motivations before any match or tournament. They had a city tournament which was in Lincoln High School in Saturday February 5, 2019. It was a troubling day for his team because they had lost a great wrestler. Due to a move by Emir, a wrestler from Midwood High School,  Alex’s to broke his arm.

This picture shows what happened to the captain Alex at the end of the match (Alex’s  arm in the city tournament). He was such a great wrestler people were saying After Alex left the match and went to the hospital. This accident stopped him from wrestling in the state tournament. However Alex’s coach Daniel Michael, said that he will do his best to help Alex to get better so he can wrestle next year. Coach Daniel also said he had lost one of his best wrestlers this year.

As a CNN writer, I hope that arm accident won’t cause him to stop the sport. I also hoping to see Alex Mick next season doing much better and getting in shape and do very well after his injury. Alex had followed the wrestling rules, but his opponent did not follow them which caused the injury to Alex’s arm.

Donald Murray: Internal revision: A Process of Discovery

  • Writing is the using of words or language to convey a message or experience. The writer may be completely oblivious of the “meaning of her experience”, or what she wants to tell her readers. she writes to discover the true meaning of her experience, and then rewrites until she thinks that she wrote everything that she wants to say.

The purpose of writing is to discover the inner feelings of the writer, and to communicate it. Quoting Ellie Wiesel’s words, “I write in order to understand as much as to be understood”.

  • By “discovery”– which he says is an important part of the revision process- Donald Murray means that through writing and rewriting and going over the revision process the writer sees stories forming that he himself was not aware of. These are plots or developments in the story that the writer did not intentionally plan before his discovery.

By using the term “ignorance” Donald Murray means that most writers don’t know what they want to say when they start writing. In the re vison stage, they discover what they truly want to tell their readers about their experience.

  • Product is the final writing. Process is the writing through which that “product” should be reached.
  • Internal revision: During internal revision the writer reads her first draft and discovers her position on the subject. Then using language, structure and research information she develops what she has discovered. She only listens to her inner self during internal revision to make sure she says what she really wants to say. The writer is like a hiker who got lost in a cold hiking trail. She has created spark in some dry moss and is carefully analyzing the situation and is now patiently adding twigs. she smiles as she sees her embers slowly turn into a blazing fire.
  • External revision: During external revision the writer edits what she has written. She does not change what she has to say (the discovery she had during internal revision), and only tweaks her writing in a way that would make sense to her readers.
  • By “content” Murray probably means the research content the writer accumulated before she wrote her first draft. He could also refer to the content of the writers first draft.

Structure is the way the writer writes her paper.

navigating genres by Kerry Dirk

I am very comfortable posting or writing in Facebook. I don’t feel restricted when i want to express myself passionately in Facebook, unlike in an academic writing, and I don’t have to worry about writing formally either. I know that I won’t be graded on my writings, which is also very relieving.

I think I do feel more comfortable than my grandpa about posting in Facebook. I have had a Facebook account for a long time and my grandpa doesn’t even know what Facebook is. Over the years, I have seen a lot of other people’s writings In Facebook, and have written quite a few posts myself.  Being in the internet every day also feeds me with a lot of content to talk about. My grandpa may capitalize all his words, post his same writing multiple times, beat around the bush too much and not be specific and straightforward. He may also lack the witty or funny style of writing that people prefer to read in the internet/Facebook. I think he would get angry about how disrespectful people are in the internet and just rage quit his account. But it is also true that there are a lot of older people who are very knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to composing a piece of writing in this genre.

I like “free-flow” writing and try not to strangle my thoughts with a strictly followed genre style. That’s why I have problems with writing traditional type essays, where it is required to do very specific things, like writing a thesis statement in the introduction, etc.

In the “Onion” my favorite title example was “Study: Dolphins not so intelligent on land. They are stating a very obvious thing in their “study”, which is sarcastic and funny.

Genre analysis: “dumbed down books”

The genre I chose to write in does not have a definite name. but if were to explain it, it is a culmination of sophisticated ideas and theories explained in a “dumbed down” way without going into technical details. The beauty of this genre is that it tells us as much as we need to understand -without going into broad details-, say a scientific theory, that most people without prior experience with the topic won’t understand. An example of a book from this genre is called, “What is Relativity”- by Jeffrey Bennet. This book contains all the important ideas about relativity without being very technical. The audience of this genre/book are people that are interested in astronomy, but, are new to the topic.

The world is a very complex dimension created by some unknown entity. From astronomical objects such as the planets, stars, blackholes, nebulae, to atomic objects that includes protons, electrons, neutrons and others, there exist a lot of physical and intangible phenomenon. From the philosophical ideas of humanities to the laws of physics, there are a lot of sophisticated explanation as to why we exist and how we exist in this world. For the masses it can be challenging, and sometimes extremely hard, to grasp a hold of the ideas and proven laws about the world. If we go into specifics, astronomy for example is a realm of science that is often stereotyped as a subject for the “nerds”. Though it is true that some of the concepts of astronomy, is hard to understand, we should still know how our world at large operates.

The advanced books that explains these hard to understand phenomenon and ideas are too hard and monotonous for the novice reader.  A genre was created for this very reason keeping the masses in mind. This genre of books generally contains all the concepts of a specific topic, but only explained in an easier way. In this regard, this genre is different from those genres that only contains the basics. The books of this genre have a lot of easy to understand examples. I have noticed that it is much easier to understand something when you can relate it to something else that you have already experienced or know about. These books also contain less to no complicated mathematical proofs to prove a law or theory. When mathematical applications are absolutely needed to explain something, the author generally tells that to the reader and suggests them to read a more advanced book if they want to further their knowledge on the subject. without much technical details, these books generally lack concrete evidence to back up what the author is trying to convey.

UNIT 3 WORKSHEET 2

I feel that it is important to open up further discussion and analysis of phlebotomy skills and training during the clinical period in school. “Phlebotomy is a process of puncturing the vein (also known as venipuncture) in order to get a blood sample for performing a medical test”. If we go way back to the blood draw history then, “bloodletting is an ancient medical practice, but its origins weren’t sound. Bloodletting is what it sounds like, it’s a withdrawal of blood. In ancient times, this was usually done with a knife”. Little did I know about healthcare in the U.S.A., which is one of the fast growing industries with secure jobs.

Such discussion would bring the following potential benefits, like how to deal with some level of your nervousness and anxiety while drawing blood. People tend to be scared of blood and I was one of them. Stepping into a healthcare field was a nerve racking. I remember my first time drawing blood from my classmate on our phlebotomy clinical rotation. Luckily, we had the best professor and instructor to learn from.  The idea of sticking someone with a sharp needle without causing pain gave me anxiety and my hands were little shaky. Yes, the needle went right into the vein and blood was flowing through to the tube. However, phlebotomy isn’t for everyone, it’s an excellent opportunity for those who can handle being around blood, needles and work with different people on a daily basis.

I’m so grateful that we are living in the XXI century with modern technology, specially in medicine. While phlebotomy is an entry-level job, it’s still a medical career. People who come to see phlebotomists can be nervous or scared, or uncomfortable. Hence, if someone commit to be a phlebotomist, they should get rid of those fears and bad experiences that they had.  Therefore, because of improper or lack of training sometimes people get hurt and injured and these are complications after the blood collection that I’m going to discuss:

  1. Nerve damage: if a nerve has been punctured and patient starts feeling pain, numbness and shocking sensation for more than couple hours then this person should be evaluated by the pathologist or go to ER for nerve damage.
  2. Re-bleed: this complication may occur if patient has some liver disease, vascular disease, clotting disorder and in particular case patient will bleed a lot and blood might clott.
  3. Deep vein thrombosis: this complication can affect the large blood vessels and can travel to the lungs with leading a serious condition called pulmonary embolism.
  4. Vasovagal reaction: patients involuntary nervous system can cause the heart to slow down and this causes the blood vessels in the legs to dilate and person can lose consciousness and faint.

This awareness is important because people need to know how hands-on training and practice is important in taking steps into the phlebotomy. The more person practices, the more he/she gets comfortable drawing blood. In order to get better, we should take an advantage of having internet access and use it right way. Drawing blood can be rewarding and challenging all at the same time.

Analysis of the poem “Trees” by J. Kilmer as a genre

“Trees” is a poem by American poet Joyce Kilmer. J. Kilmer is famous for his simple style, appreciation of nature and religious views. The poem was written in February 1913, it was first published in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse in August 1913 and included in Kilmer’s 1914 collection Trees and Other Poems. It addresses to people who appreciate nature, I guess, that’s one of the reason it was so popular and was liked by public. From the other hand, publishing in the magazine of poetry suggests narrow circle of fellow-poets-readers.

The purpose of the writing poems in general and “Trees” in particular is to convey not only information, but emotions as well. Emotional message translates through using reach adjectives and metaphors. For example, Kilmer compares unanimated object: a tree, to a child “whose hungry mouth is prest against the earth’s sweet flowing breast”, and to a person who “lifts her leafy arms to pray”. Using the language, J. Kilmer evokes colorful images in a reader. The main signature of poem as a genre is the rhyme. The rhyming words and certain number of syllables in each line create unique tone, melody, character and feeling.

I would speculate that poetry is the most creative type of writing. It can be written in wide variety of ways and still called a “poem”. Traditionally, poems suppose to have rhythm and rhyme but in modern poetry even that is not required. I understand poems as a type of writing that translates emotions through words in an artistic, creative way.

Example of the genre : Poem

Trees

By Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Genre Assignment

You may see me struggle,
but you won’t see me fall.
Regardless if I’m weak or not,
I’m going to stand tall.
Everyone says life is easy,
but truly living it is not.
Times get hard,
people struggle
and constantly get put on the spot.
I’m going to wear the biggest smile,
even though I want to cry.
I’m going to fight to live,
even though I’m destined to die.
And even though it’s hard
and I may struggle through it all,
you may see me struggle…
but you will NEVER see me fall.

The poem was created to uplift anyone who had any thought of giving up in any situation. It lets the audience know that life may get hard a times, but you have to constantly persevere through it all by fighting for what you have visioned for yourself. The poem teaches you alot in just a few lines which is what makes it good. Each line written in the poem can relate to the audience no matter who it is. Besides that, the poem also mentions the fact that life may get difficult to the point where you at your weakest. The time when the toughest situations approach you that when have to stand tall. Staying positive through the obstacles that life has ready to throw at you is what’s most important. Staying positive when you at your worst can be the most helpful tool.
