Urban Artifacts: Phase 4

From this project, I learned and understand the figure-ground relationships. To be honest, starting the project was pretty simple and easy. However, I did not realize until after going though the inking part of the design was the hardest part of the project. When I was inking the project, my mind was full with regrets about picking every artifacts. Especially inking the bobby-pin was a challenge for me. I also thought about the same thing when cutting the black paper with the Xacto knife, and gluing things together. However, above all I believe that I done a good job. I am really proud of my self and surprised when Professor Spevack complemented on my designs and great critiques from my peers in class. I was more surprised when no one said anything on how I should improve. However, when professor said that one of the design was not so great in figure-ground design. I was actually happy to hear negative comments on my design, because I can actually improve my self.

Braggarts

Noun

Person who brags a lot

Source: Merriam-Webster

I encountered this word at the end of the sample from the reading expert “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead. “Except for that bit about the Dutch buying Manhattan for twenty-four bucks there are and always will be braggarts who “got in at the right time.”” I never heard of this word this before nor I read it somewhere else. The reason what caught my attention was the pronunciation of the word. I believe this word fits the upper class, because of how much money they make compared to the lower class. This sentence shows that the Dutch were braggarts, because they bought Manhattan for twenty-four bucks. Compared to the time back than, the money became less value than it used to be.

Project #1–How did you get here?

  • How did you know what you wanted to include?

I knew, because anime is something that represents me. With out anime, I would most likely would be interested other than art. Also including my childhood of coming here from Japan to United States, and how my English developed over the course of years.

  • How did you refine what you included?

I asked my peers to revise what I would add and cross out unnecessary things. By reading over again to make sure I forgot to include, or something that is unnecessary.

  • How did you determine what to eliminate?

Things that are too personal, or something that is off topic. Also things that unrelated to my passion in anime or art.

  • How did you figure out the project’s organization?

I actually saw someone’s post at first and made me think about how I was going to construct my project. Beginning with introducing my self on how my childhood became who I am now.

  • What did your classmate’s feedback do for your work process?

My classmate’s feedback helped me a lot to revise, such as things that I need more explanation which most of people do not understand what anime is.

  • What did reading your classmate’s project and giving feedback do for your work process?

It made me wonder if I missed anything in my project while giving feed backs. Made me go back and check my project over and over.

  • How much time did you spend brainstorming? outlining? drafting? revising? Polishing?

Not much, I knew what I needed to include and not to include. Also, because of the help from my classmate’s feed backs, it made it much easier and smoother for me to work on.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 3

I chose this stable and ambiguous design, because it intrigued my attention that these two design have a connection. Both designs pulls in each others energy of ground and figure composition. It balances out together since the top design have more ground and the bottom has more figures.

It took me about 3 hours of completing, such as tracing, measuring, cutting, and pasting. I was wondering if I am suppose to outline the measuring.

Project #1 Introduction (Final)

Ayano Morishima was born in Japan and moved to the United States when she was just a 10 years old. Knowing English from her Saturday school in Japan, that opportunity made useful in her life when she moved to the U.S. Since English is her second language, she had to take ESL. It took her about 5 years of special class to pass, because she needed English language for her future. She graduated from the high school, The Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) in the year of 2015. She had no connection in any of the art department other than the ceramics during her high school year. She is now 19 years old and going to college to learn more about art and to be able to move one step closer in life towards her dream.

My passions lie in anime, because it’s what I grew up with. When I was little, my daily Sunday morning was anime day. I remember that the anime was for kids, like Sailor Moon, Ojamajo, Doraemon, Pokemon etc. As I grew up, the variety of anime or should I say genre of anime expanded. The expansion made me watch more teen type of anime such as Black Butler, Fairy Tail, Gintama, Attack on Titan etc. Because of this, it came into my mind that what if I can be able to draw like that and create my own anime which eventually be on T.V.? I eventually started drawing anime as I copied off others and was be able to work from there to make my own. I also like anime because it is almost a fantasy that will never come true in life. Sure, there are shows that turned to live actions. However it’s different because of anime, they could create something beyond. Many of my friends insist on me becoming an manga artist, however I declined. There are two reasons, first I cannot draw the same character and second living as a manga artist is a hard in financial terms. First problem can be solved, if I keep working on my drawing skills, however I cannot go through life which takes a lot of time selling manga and receiving money off of it. Instead, I want work as a character designer by hand and digitally. I’m usually aesthetic about my art work, because I get frustrated when final drawing looks horrible than the one I imaged in my head. Also, when head is too big for the body, etc. I am more into modern style of anime drawings, because old characters are drawn in a simple structure. Such as long face and big shiny eyes. I like to draw more complex and detailed characters which most people are more interested.

Usually I draw most of the time with a single pencil, but I hope I learn how to use various range of pencils. So that I could expand my drawing skills. Recently I am into digital drawing on a tablet. I find digital drawing interesting because there were techniques that I was able to do digitally and not by hand. (*Do not read the profile, it contains the wrong information. Avatar:

The avatar that I chose was a character from the BGM that I recently found on YouTube. (If interested, the music is from this link: Here) I fell in love with it, because of the catchy lyrics and the awesome beat grabbed my heart instantly. After that started to go to its official website where I encountered with the avatar. Before knowing it, the character itself matches my personality and the features. As I looked closely, his sharp eyes and angry eyebrows shows a powerful and smart mentally. However his one hand is covered over his chest, this action makes the connection that I also have the weak side and doesn’t always acts strong. We both have a same length of hair, however the difference of the avatar is that I don’t have a white hair and my gender is a girl.

My avatar can mislead people into thinking that I am mean or cold to people, because of the facial expression. Also, the characters that are written in the paper might mislead people that it is in Chinese characters rather than Japanese. Many people say that they are the same, however they are not. In history that these characters came from China. However, when it came across to Japan those characters changed a little to a simple character which people could understand more. In addition where the characters looks more girl like than the guy.

My profile conveys that I am a hard worker, and an amazing person who has a passion for anime. My imagination can go beyond the world, and always have a creative story that I can just make a book about it. Hoping that my creative imagination will become real in animation and my creativity would be acknowledge. This profile matters to me because this is who I am and always will be. After 10 or 20 years, I would still be interested in anime and have a creative mindset. If I changed, it will most likely be that I’ve become a boring person who only thinks about reality. Its good to have a time to be in your own world.

Inextricable

Adjective

Impossible to separate

I came across this word from the reading expert “Universe Strikes” Back by Ellen Lupton. I picked up this word because it stood out from the sentence that I read, “A cosmopolitan place such as New York or Paris or Kumasi draws its energy from a mix of persons inextricably connected with a larger world who have the right to participate in a world discourse”. Meaning that energy from the places all around the world mixes to together to form a bigger picture that can speak against the world. This word is something that connects individual to form unity, that brings our differences together. I also picked this word, because of the upcoming election. I wanted to share this word and how we have to realize that Barnie Sanders knows more than other voters; what is better for the people and the country.

Comment on: Wind, Sand and Stars “The Tool” by Antonie de Saint- ExupĂ©ry

The Wind, Sand and Stars “The Tool” by Antonie de Saint -ExupĂ©ry, tells the reader how design is not to only to add, but to take away as well. This sentence from the chapter “to refine the curve of a piece of furniture, or a ship’s keel, or the fuselage of an airplane, until gradually it partakes of the elementary purity of the curve of ‘a human breast or shoulder
”, shows that there are elements that are necessary to make an object function to achieve its purpose. It connects to our graphic design principle and our everyday life, because in drafting it will take many hours and it will not be complete if elements are missing from the objects. The key is to start with something simple where you can go back and change. It will eventually take you another step closer to the finish line.

Oscillate

2. to keep changing from one belief, feeling, condition, etc., to an opposite one

3. to change in strength or direction regularly

I’ve come across this word from the reading expert Wind, Sand and Stars “The Tool” by Antonie de Saint -ExupĂ©ry. I picked up this word from this sentence, “The indicators that oscillated on the instrument panel warned us of a thousand dangers.” Because it connects to our graphic design principle and our every day life. To achieve, we have to put our efforts in. Just like drawing, drafting will take hours to reach its final completion. The key, to this sentence is to start with something simple which you will go back and change. It takes you another step closer to the finish line.
