My general area of study is: Roller Blading

1. After doing some preliminary research, I am able to note below at least one argument / discussion / problem that surrounds my area of study: Is it safe to skate? Some people say that skating accounts for over 100,000 injuries each year while others say that with proper training, skill development and equipment all injuries can be avoided.

2. The people or community of people most affected by this problem are…: The people that use skating as a form of transportation are affected because if there are more people against roller skating then less places to skate will be made and skating on the streets could become more dangerous.

3. Here are some key terms or phrases particularly associated with this issue. (For example, if your proposal is about hiking, you might use phrases like “manageable distances,” “maps,” “excursions,” “rough terrain,” “backpack,” “dehydration,” “survival in the elements,” “pathfinding,” et al.):

Speed, Helmet, Knee Pads. Exercise

4. Here are the sources I have used so far to read about and otherwise learn about this issue. (Wikipedia, CNN, personal interviews, The New York Times, Psychology Today – whatever the source, please note it. Did you use the key terms you just listed, above, when you conducted your searches? Inquiry/Research on Difficulties that Artists face.

Art is everywhere around us. And if you ask people around “Who is the greatest Artist?” probably, everyone would answer – “Nature.” People from the ancient times were interested in painting and drawing, sculpting and crafting. They were trying to preserve in times their emotions, their memories, and significant events. Since the beginning of times, people wanted to express themselves and did it in dancing, music, fine art, and other genres. Now, people do art as their hobbies, stress relief, as a need to express their feelings, to deal with depression, and to make a profit of it.

People who chose Art as their profession stepped on a challenging path. Most likely, almost everyone’s artist’s parents told them not to do that. It is very easy to explain – parents are afraid that their kids will have many difficulties in finding jobs and making a stable amount of money. Plus, the Art market is a very, very competitive place. To be in high demand, artists always must learn new and grow in their knowledge. The technologies are not staying in one place, and we have to keep the pace. That’s why to be a good and demanded artist people need to educate themselves. Most of the art and design schools are extremely expensive and whoever wants to make art as their profession must keep in mind that bachelor and especially master programs require to be able to pay an enormous amount of money, so first thing people must do is to think really hard – is that what they want to do for their life? How they will be paying for their tuition? Is this profession will “feed” them and pay off their bills and student loans?

While I was researching for this topic, I remembered what kind of obstacles and issues I personally faced in my life and what my artist family members have shared with me. We are our own biggest critics. We, artists, are never happy with our work. We always feel that we could do better and our art is not good enough. Enough for what? – I am always asking myself. Or for who? Self-doubt is the Number-One-Enemy, but we learn how to live with such a “neighbor.” The artists have to learn how to not to let anyone tell that what you are creating is not valid. We spent years of practice and education to shape ourselves, to know the value of our knowledge and to know that our art will be remarkable for the future generations, it will leave a mark in the Art history. The success will be always judged by other people, most of the times who are irrelevant, incompetent in that field.

The other problem is what to do with your art? How to present it? How to sell it? How to find your clients? The artists are having difficulties when they are looking for display space, galleries or collectors. To be able to produce and present art in a marketable way can be way too expensive. The galleries, shipping fees, printing copies, etc. – there are many things that will be trying to take their portion, their piece on your work. Artists need to market themselves. And here everything depends on networking and how good your communicational skills and social media usage are. Inability to find a job in the art field pushes many artists to find other work for income and leave art as a hobby.

The one fear that I personally face every single time I try to do anything, either it is related to drawing, painting, writing, cooking, reading or even traveling is – how to start? And here comes the fear of the white paper. I feel my hands are not mine, they are not obeying me, in my mind I know how to do it, I see it is coming, but when I try to start, when I do the first couple of strokes I feel like someone else is doing it and my mind is screaming: “Nooo! Not like this!” I don’t like what I see and I erase it and try over and over again. Without everyday practice, you lose your skills. The same way with languages – if you don’t use them daily – you forget them. But once started artists have to learn how to stop. In pursuit of the ideal masterpiece, we can lose the great work we have done. It will never be ideal. My Master in fine arts college used to say “Don’t make it ‘soapy’, know when to stop, the Best is the enemy of the Good, your painting has to ‘breathe’, has to be fresh and crispy.” He called this technique “Alla Prima”, wet-on-wet. I think it is good advice for life in general. To know when to stop. Whatever you do – make it fresh, crispy. And remember it will never be ideal.

There will be always challenges on your way to your growth. These challenges will shape you as an artist, as a person. You will not face them just once and never meet again. You will be going through them over and over again if you really want to grow and to conquer new heights. And the last but not least advice – grow a very thick shell instead of your skin, it will protect your inner You and your priceless inner Art against rejections, and never give up, keep walking!

I feel that is important to talk about an issue facing students and recent graduate students, which is getting hired in a top-notch company like Lockheed-Martin. This type of companies is hard to get into it even for internship position. Most of the companies prefer to hire a candidate that has long period of training and have done many projects, or through referral, that’s mean the candidates (students) should have good networking or previous training to have a chance to get hired, which is hard for them.

Such discussion would bring many benefits for both sides the candidates and the company. The candidates will know the fact of the hiring process or based on what factors the companies pick their candidates and then they prepare themselves for that fact. While the benefit that the company may gain from such discussion that the hire managers should aware about the problem that faces student and recent graduate, also to put in their consideration that the students having a lack in having networking and also having a lack to have long period training. The hire managers should have another option to consider the candidates.

The companies (the hire managers) should have another option such assign an evaluation project or unpaid training. Choosing the wrong candidate will cost the company a lot, bad reputation and the salary that paid to the wrong candidate. To avoid this problem the company can offer unpaid training then after that evaluate the candidate then choose the right one. I believe this idea will help both sides the candidate and the company. The candidates will have fair and wide opportunities to have the job opportunity. While the companies will choose the right candidate without losing money or reputation

Some of the website that help me to recognize some problems like zipjob website, it shows me how the network is effective in the hiring. Also indeed website help me a lot gathering idea through the comments that the readers post about how hard to get hired.

My Journey

My journey has been one of understanding the nature of the environments I enter.

To know the effects of acting and not acting to stimuli.

To see what comes and what goes.

While using minimal physical efforts towards its manifestation, but rather acknowledging what my state of being manifests for me.

My journey, has been primarily one of observation for more than a year.

Air quality is a problem for residents and visitors of New York City. The prominent discomfort is from the odor released by organisms proliferating primarily in bay areas. This matter is dealing with the biogeography of the area of New York City. If we the people, of New York City, were more aware of the biological effects, airborne gases have upon the overall health of the population within New York City, efforts towards its remediation would ensue with greater vigor.

The people within New York City are affected by air quality. Air is something we inhale as a method of living. The air is composed of elements found on the periodic table of elements. “By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1% at sea level, and 0.4% over the entire atmosphere.” This data reflects the standard values of elements in the air by their ratios. These airborne gases affect our health, by the amount of saturation when elements in the air are outside these standard values. As an example, if the carbon dioxide content within the air rises above certain levels, people within the confines of such an environment may suffer from asphyxiation, due to the decrease in available oxygen. Also, long term effects of depriving the body of oxygen will slowly kill the cells within the body, leading to forms of disease and discomfort.

The reason I am presenting this information, is to convey the idea that the organisms proliferating in the bay areas, are producing gases that hover over New York City, changing the composition of the air we breathe. These gases also contain pathogens, that lead to other forms of disease and discomfort. There are about thirteen air quality monitors found throughout New York City. The data is made available by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, using Geographic Information Systems. The primary data available is only Carbon Dioxide, Ozone and another compound that I am unable to define the acronym of. The data provided by New York State is inadequate to address airborne pathogens and available oxygen levels.

The devices, put in place to monitor air quality, is limited to the idea of climate change. Hence the reason why, Ozone which fails to reflect harmful solar radiation when depleted, and Cardon dioxide which retains the heat obtained from solar radiation when abundant, is of primary focus for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

As a long-standing resident of New York City, I have been acquainted with the ill effects that the degradation of our environmental air quality. I hold the opinion that the bay areas contain the most harmful contaminants and pathogens that enter the air. That air quality is not just a concern for climate change, but one of overall health and well being of the human population that dwells with the domain of New York City.

WORKSHEET 2 Inquiry Project

Pranayama

Breathing is what we do all the time without any regard on how exactly it works. Imagine, if you had to consciously inhale and exhale every time, you’d have make yourself breath faster if you run, or make yourself breath slower if you sleep. Conscious breath control 100% of the time is just impossible, it won’t be time to actually live! Although, conscious birthing or breathing exercises can be very beneficial for health.

I feel that it is important to open up further discussion and analysis of breathing exercises, alternate nostril breathing exercise in particular, because this exercise can be useful for anyone who experiences stress or want to feel more relaxed and even more happy.

Breathing, as well as heart beating, food digesting, cells dividing and many more process are all controlled by our autonomic nervous system: system that keeps us alive. Autonomic nervous system can be divided into tow parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic. Sympathetic nervous system usually associated with our “fight or flight response, it speeds up the heart and respirations in response to danger or stress. Parasympathetic nervous system acts the opposite way – slows down the heart, relaxes the muscles and puts us into “rest and digest” mode. Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are complementary, for example, with each inhale the heart rate speeds up a tiny bit (sympathetic response) and each exhale the heart slows down a tiny bit (parasympathetic response).

Vagus nerve (or wandering nerve) is a largest nerve in the body and composes 80% of parasympathetic nervous system (Stern, E., 2019). Vagus originates in the brain stem’s areas that control breathing and digestion, emotion and communication and connects to almost all internal organs, including the heart and digestive system. In other words, vagus nerve connects and relaxation (parasympathetic response) and breathing.

Life is very stressful for many people. Constant stress in life tends to accumulate and leads to overdrive of sympathetic response and constant “fight or flight” mode. Sympathetic system in this situation suppresses the function of vagus nerve and weakens its ability to send information between internal organs, the heart and the brain (weak vagal tone, Stern, E., 2019). In the long term, the body is trying to compensate the weak vagal tone by activating inflammation response, elevating blood pressure, causing anxiety and various imbalances.

The human body has a tremendous potential for self-healing, but it happens in relaxed state (parasympathetic response). Hence, stress activates sympathetic response and hinders the ability of the body to self-regulate and self-heal. Therefore, practices which promote relaxation and support parasympathetic system help the body to overcome imbalances. One of the such practices is conscious birthing exercises.

Breathing pattern can be consciously controlled for some period of time. Slow equal inhales and exhales balance sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. From the yogic point of view, breathing is the vital energy (prana) and breathing exercises help the vital energy to flow smoothly throughout the body.

I’d like to explore why such a wonderful, almost miraculous, tool as breathing exercises is not so widely spread. It seems very ironic that with widespread popularity of yoga, practicing yoga postures (asanas) is more popular then breathing exercises (pranayama).

First of all, breathing exercise is seemingly simple. In our capitalistic society simple things are overlooked as not worthy attention. For example, taking an expensive pill might seem more productive then taking couple of breaths.

Second, breathing exercises require great regularity. They don’t give fast results.  Regularity is the key to success. For example, it’s harder to practice breathing exercise every day for months to improve depression then just take an antidepressant. Although, in the long run, the breathing exercise give more stable results and don’t produce addiction.

Additionally, yoga and pranayama is often mistaken as a religious practice. True, that yoga is historically rooted in Indian religious tradition, but it does not apply any religious context to doing yoga or pranayama.

People need to be aware of this simple yet effective tool to promote health, reduce stress, feel more relaxed, increase the quality of life.

UNIT 3             Worksheet 2          brainstorming your Research Proposal

I feel that it is important to discuss about the lack of American interest for the global sport of soccer. Soccer is the most famous sport in the world, with an estimated fan base of 3.5 million people. but in the states, soccer ranks at 7 as the most favorite sport.

This discussion will bring light to the reason why so many people around the world are so fond of soccer. It will reveal to the everyday American what they are missing and how they should approach the game of soccer to enjoy the true beauty of the game. It would teach the people of U.S unity and benefit of teamwork. And I think all of us can agree on the fact the unity is something that this country lacks a lot. It would teach kids that regardless of individual difference people can unite and work together, thus tackling the problem of bullying. It would also bring a lot of revenue to the country.

This discussion will bring light to the reason why so many people around the world are so fond of soccer. It will reveal to the everyday Americans what they are missing and how they should approach the game of soccer to enjoy the true beauty of the game.

U.S is getting more and more isolated from the world day by day. We don’t get along with other countries in terms of politics and the fact that we reject the medium (soccer), that the people of the world use to unite, is not helping either. I just want to reflect the shiny sides of soccer- that other people find so appealing- to the Americans and see if I can get them to view the sport with a different perspective.

UNIT 3 WORKSHEET 1 Note: the following are prompts to help you organize your work. Please make your answers clear and easy to read! Take all the space you need to answer the questions.

My general area of study is: soccer

  1. After doing some preliminary research, I am able to note below at least one argument / discussion / problem that surrounds my area of study:

Most Americans, unlike most people in the world, don’t like soccer. Through my research I found out that the reason for their uninterest in soccer:

  • the game consists of much fewer goals/points scored to their liking, unlike, say, American football or basketball.
  • There aren’t any “drinks break” or ad breaks in soccer. The only break is between the two halves of the game- after 45 minutes.
  • Soccer players are not tough enough and go down easily upon contact. They also dive to get foul calls.

  1. The people or community of people most affected by this problem are…:

Americans who like soccer, and secondly, Americans who dislike it as well. The ones who dislike it are being left out from the unity of a whooping 3.5 billion fans in the world. They are being left out from the beautiful game

Tedious; no drinks or ads break; players are soft; not enough goals/points

My general area of study is: Job interviews.

1. After doing some preliminary research, I am able to note below at least one argument / discussion / problem that surrounds my area of study:

  1. Job interviews often ask you questions like, “can you tell me a little about yourself ?”, there are arguments over this. Different sides argue that you shouldn’t tell them everything there is to about yourself. For example don’t tell them your complete employment , or personal history. There could be many questions asked in a interview, the questions also depends on the job, situation you are in. Job interviews often ask you questions about your personal life, however It’s important that we also do a little research about the job. Job interviews are time consuming when it comes to giving a response whether you got accepted, or rejected.

2. The people or community of people most affected by this problem are…:

2. Interviewees

3. Here are some key terms or phrases particularly associated with this issue. (For example, if your proposal is about hiking, you might use phrases like “manageable distances,” “maps,” “excursions,” “rough terrain,” “backpack,” “dehydration,” “survival in the elements,” “path finding,” et al.):
