Definition: Something that is dangerous or very risky can be described with the adjective perilous.
Encountered from A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport by Charles Mcgrath.
“Upon arriving in New York, he walked from Kennedy Airport to the nearby Crowne Plaza Hotel, a journey more perilous than he expected, because it involved a nightmare traverse of expressways with no curbs.”
I understand this word now because usually by airports, its big highways and no sidewalks for people to walk so it would be dangerous to travel by foot.
Example: School open during extreme weather is perilous for students.
To get to this building, i exited from the Namm Hall ( main building) and then turned left, walking away in the direction away from the A, C, R trains, while still remaining on Jay St. Once you walked down, you will most lightly wouldn’t be able to catch the light before it changes because its a highway that you have to cross which is called, “Tillary St.” Once you are across the street, you will see a store called, ” Concord Market” and also a food stand where you can get your hot dogs or drinks. On the other side of the street is a park where you see people playing basket ball and kids playground connected to it. The park is called, “McLaughlin Park.” After seeing that, the cathedral should be right there in front of you, you can’t miss it. Your journey there will be slightly challenging if you get out with other college students with already a crowd of people either walking to walk, strolling around where they take their time. Jay street is a busy street so speed walking is recommended. The reason I chose this building because how it looks out of place where the other buildings you see look more sleek, modern, urban, and new in today times. I really like the details on the cathedral and how its old fashion. It has a similar architecture to the ones in Europe. I like buildings who give that field that you aren’t in the city anymore.
To take this picture I had to leave through the exit near the pearl building. Then taking a left down the block to cross the street. From there we turn right and go towards the park ahead. Across from the park to the right we see this building.
I took a picture of this building because building with these kind of structures are a rare sight to see now a days, where this building feels like its a castle compared to the other building and apartments around the area. This becomes the juxtaposition of an old style vs new style. Along that this old style due to not being common it feels like it gives a sort of empowerment feeling of importance, which assuming it is, compared to the tall buildings around it.
As I play the song the first sound I hear reminds me of steel drums or steel pans being played gently, giving off a sort of mellow vibe. It kind of reminds me of the beach during a summer day. Next you here one single beat , and at the same time a you can hear what I think Sounds like a high pitched Kazoo echoing in the background and Childish Bambino begins to sing. As Gambino sings, you hear the Kazoo like sound played a few times through out the song and and what sounds like Maracas. After 1 minute and 18sec into the song you hear a beat played repeatedly to create a rhythm and all the previous sounds heard at the beginning in being played in the background. All of these sounds are played together as one throughout the whole song.
In my sound representation drawing, the zig zagged lines with circle or ovals represent the steel drummed like sounds. The zig zag lined kind of follows the rhythm if the steel drums. The sort if squiggly lines that go up than down represents the Kazoo like sound that when played was high pitch but towards the end kind of dropped a little. The circles represent the different beats played throughout the song. And the tiny triangles seen at the top of my sound representation represent the Maracas played a few times in the song. All of these sound were chosen by the artist to give off the summertime like vibe.
For this project, I chose the song Nothing I’ve ever known by Bryan Adam, the instrumental version. The song has a variety, in which it would start of with the guitar playing giving a lonely feeling slowly building up and by minute 1:05 other instruments join in giving a sense that it’s no longer lonely but hopeful or the feeling of having someone with you. In the Begining, you can say it would have smooth steady lines with curves but as it goes on the line can become into two or more with more curves maybe even sharp turns. This to show the dramatic or dynamics of the song. Then as the song reach the end it can return to one line or shape and fading into the page.
I’m not completely sure if these observations affect my understanding of the music or intention of the Artist. This is due to the song being used in the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and was only the instrumental version as the song does have lyrics to it. But while listening to the lyrics the meaning could be that the person has fallen in love and experience that feeling for the first time which becomes something they ‘have never known’ and wanting to be with them, however, the ending causes a confusion for me or a change that the person doesn’t know where this feeling will take them in the end.
The sounds I hear in the beginning are chimes so I drew the firework looking symbols to represent that. Then it slowly eases to more instruments like the circles. The circles represent the main rhythm while the other lines represent the xylophone. The long lines on the side are the computer-generated sound and long part is the violin and electric piano. You also hear a triangle with the violin which is represented by the stars. The vocal is shown through the curvy lines and the triangle is the guitar. And finally, the new instrument at the end is shown through the spiral.
The way I drew it was to be moved slowly from the top left corner down the page and back up. The observation shows how I tend to focus more on the tiny chimes on the side and the slow repeated generated sound and tend to forget the guitar is there. You can also see that the beginning of the song intentionally starts out quiet and gets busy before ending quietly too.
Here we have one stable and one ambiguous. The stable one is a .40 that I found outside of city tech by the bicycles. It is stable because you can clearly see the number from the background. The second picture is a stain that is near the Nathans hot dog stand a few blocks down from city tech by the train station. It is ambiguous because the background and figure are equal and if you were to turn it and look at it from a different side it would show more than one thing. I chose these two because it took place in near the school. Each of these drawings were taken from phase 2.
My major is Graphic Design/Communication Design, since I was younger I have always been creative with drawing. The way I visualize myself is a very stay to myself, perfectionist, carefree person. I am very passionate about having my camera with me and being able to take pictures of people and other beautiful things. Where I see myself in five to ten years is working and doing what I love creating things that people will like. A statement that I feel that represents me and my goals for college is “ a wolf in a wolf’s skin “ it means someone who’s not afraid to wear their skin or who they are despite anyone’s opinion. I feel like this made me the person I am today and also made me realize to just be myself, also to not change over other people’s opinion, and by doing that I feel it will help me reach my goals in college to do what I want in the future.
My avatar/ profile picture represents me because like I’ve said before I am a very reserved person, some people say I like to be by myself and do my own thing, but when it comes to going to school I’ve always been told that I have this mean, tired look on my face. The emojis surrounding the girls head is basically my many moods that I show a lot. I’m always annoyed when I have to either get up early for school, dealing with siblings or just stressing over little things.
The way I think someone would or will misinterpret my avatar is that they might think that by looking at my profile picture that they may not what to interact with me if they ever see me in the halls or outside of school because I may seem like I don’t want to be bothered or seem like I’m a rude person.
#1 Stable: This bottle cap got abandoned by its bottle, leaving it in the right place where I would notice it and realize how much it was conveniently placed on the sidewalk where it could later be used in a project to show stable figure/ground.
#3 Stable: This piece of tin foil contrasts from the black background, which makes it an obvious figure ground.
#1 Ambiguous: This painting shows ambiguous figure/ground, even though it isn’t a picture of something outdoors it still shows how background color vs. foreground color makes a difference for obvious and ambiguous figure/ground. The composition shows very organic shapes, like the sky, clouds, and the skeleton ribs. The painting is by David Wojnarowicz @ the Whitney.
#2 Ambiguous: This wrapper for the candy called Smarties was just chilling on the outside area of City Tech all lonely. If there wasn’t so much debris around the wrapper it would’ve been a stable figure/ground example. It has very geometric shapes and the surrounding shapes are very organic which I think shows where the setting of this candy was being devoured.
#3 Ambiguous: This is another little segment of a whole painting of David Wojnarowicz.
New York City streets are filled with many things, from green bottle caps left by a person who didn’t screw it on their beverage very well, to old flavorless gum spat from the mouth of a person, to different dried stains and spills left by coffee, water, juice, sodas, and even gross liquid leaking out trash bags sitting on the streets waiting to be hurled into the back of garbage truck, or to the bird poop left by a group of pigeons trying to tag a fellow New Yorker.
The first three images at the top are examples of an Ambiguous figure/ground relationship and the three at the bottom are examples of a Stable figure/ground relationship. The three images at the top represent ambiguous figure/ground relationships because of the how the elements simultaneously come out to look as though they are both the figure and the ground. This leaves the viewer with no option but to depict what they think is the figure or ground in the image. The three images at the bottom are examples of Stable figure/ground relationships because of how the elements in the image clearly point out what the figure is and what the ground is. The positive space in the image dominates the negative space, giving a clear view of the figure and the ground. The image containing the green cap is an example of a geometric shape. This is because the shape is sharp and precise, also it has a perfectly proportioned circle. The rest of the images are examples of organic shapes. Unlike the image containing the green cap, they contain shapes with more of a natural flowing look.
