Field trip to Cooper Hewitt Design Museum

The New exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt-The senses, features many works incorporating our five senses into design elements of everyday objects, such as clocks for the visually impaired, and food bowls for those with Alzheimer’s.

While trying to fully admire each work and making sure to keep a slow pace, i came upon one work entitled “Taste of Music (1002)“designed by Bruno Mesz, made in 2011. The work featured a set of black speakers, each tucked into a corner of the window sill it rested on, with a description before it, reading “Four buttons play short musical compositions inspired by the sense of taste”. After i pressed the first small white button labeled sour, what came was a series of notes that i thought maybe could represent sour to the artist. This work compelled me because of how subjective it was. In other pieces i saw, they mostly relied on touch, sight, or audio, but what this piece does is different, it tries to take something we taste and translate that into audio, which in my mind, doesn’t work. When you’re first introduced to it, you are immediately given a name to the sound, in a way its almost saying “this is sour, and that’s a fact” or “this is what sweet sounds like” and the audience is expected to go “that’s right!” but that isn’t how it works. It would have been better to have the viewer decide for themselves what sound goes to what taste, or even make it a surprise. But yes, i did enjoy this particular work, to create something we taste into a piece of audio is hard, and i’m sure to some the artist really captured the taste.

Another work i noticed at the gallery was a large textured canvas, maybe 4ft by 2 ft “Organoid Organic Rose Blossoms Wallcovering, 2016″, by Martin Jehart, made up of flower petals, and Alpine hay mixed with herbs (not specified which herbs). From afar it just looks like a textile pattern, but when getting up close, you can smell the aroma of said flowers and herbs and alpine. I thought this piece was, to put it simply, really pretty. I thought the idea of introducing a natural aroma into a room, which source was more organic than a tin can spraying chemicals was very eco-friendly. However i noticed some of class mates weren’t really observing this piece as much as i was,  not that that’s a bad thing.  Maybe to them, it was plain. Or it wasn’t really breaking new ground, which might be true. But i found the use of flowers and other natural smells, especially in a large frame, was very welcoming and beautiful.

Sound Visualization: Phase 1

For this project, I decided to choose one of my favorite J-pop (Japanese) songs called “Ninelie” (with Chelly), by Aimer, her breathy vocal that stands out among J-pop. This song start with a very calm atmosphere, then the piano playing along following with a guitar and Aimer voices. It keeps this very kind sad melody that makes you feel  lonely but as it continues, the bass guitar follows the flow and little by little it starts building up like there’s hope and makes you want to get back on your feet and rise. It’s like see light of hope rising to the sky to its stars. Another way that I can describe is like seeing the sky finally cracking into a triangular geometric shape and see the True Tone of light lurking out of the cracks and at last the triangular shape rising into the sky starts fading into sparking lights and see the beauty beyond the sky .

Here are both my stable and ambiguous figures that I created from a leaf. the type of feedback that I received was very positive, and insightful. Makes me want to keep doing things such as what we did to get these figures.

After the criticism i received from class, i needed to make these two pictures relate to each other. By doing that i took the circle from the stable figure and added it to the ambiguous figure. With the circle, the ambiguous figure looks like something spilled and covered up the 40. From what i learn from the critics, for the upcoming projects i will use figures that are able to relate to each other.

Here we have one stable and one ambiguous. The stable one is a .40 that I found outside of city tech by the bicycles.  It is stable because you can clearly see the number from the background. The second picture is a stain that is near the Nathans hot dog stand a few blocks down from city tech by the train station. It is ambiguous because the background and figure are equal and if you were to turn it and look at it from a different side it would show more than one thing. I chose these two because it took place in near the school. Each of these drawings were taken from phase 2.

These are the finished, inked, design of the urban artifacts phase 3 project. I chose the tree stump photo, and the Trash, because i felt there was a lot to simplify and stylize. I decided to go with a simplified pattern or design to make it seem more like a textile.

the stable design, is black and white, split roughly in the middle, with easy triangular shapes to show some sort of definition. While the Ambiguous peice is a black and white repeated pattern. vaguely replicating the rings of a tree stump.

COMD1100 Reminder for Monday’s Class

  • Bring finished Inked Compositions on 9×12″ Bristol Board (1 stable, 1 ambiguous) to class for critique.
  • Your Design Process posts Phases 1-3 should be complete and ready to present.
  • If you do not have your work complete, please come to class to participate and support your classmates.

Materials Needed for THIS Monday’s Class:

  • The used book that you are using for your Glossument
  • Materials of your choice: paint, brushes, collage materials, glue stick, X-ACTO knife, scissors, inking pens, etc.
  • We will spend time working on your Glossument in class after the critique.
