Didactic 3

Didactic 3: Carousing

This part of the book illustrates a bottle of liqour on a page sourounded by liqour. It also illustrates the idea of alcohol and how its portrayed in society. Also the liquid around the bottle doesn’t represents liquor, it also represents those people who happen to be engaged in drinking or alcoholics. It also shows how people tend to drown in their own problems hence the alcohol drowning them because they involve themselves in alcohol. Liquor only makes things worst not better.

Didactic 2: Fictitious

This part of the book is located towards the end section of the book. I drew a pink panther because it illustrates the theme of fabrication. I also cut up squares to give the illusion of the pink panther walking down the stairs. Its fictitious due to the fact that panthers cant walk like a human because they crawl on the ground. Also the theme of fabrication plays a big role in this book because its shows how creative the book can get when there’s no limits.

Didactic 1: Omnipotent.

This part of the book represents the word Omnipotent. I illustrated an eye. I drew an eye because an eye represents the sight and vision. Omnipotent has to do with the overwhelming dominance. I cut up a box and drew an eye because the eye can see everything that is going on around him. An eye also represents dominance because being a blind leader won’t work because in order to have complete control of every aspect you need to see and have visions of the future. Lastly dominance can put things in order.

The glossument book called i heard the book called my name is originally remade from a book called i heard the owl call my name. In this book, it contains vocabulary that the artist discovered and learnt throughout the first semester of the first college year. The pages in the book are covered in black paint and the idea was inspired by blackout poetry from “A Humument” by Tom Phillip. The author is not much of a artist so it was a first time experience. This glossument book was made by Giraffe, a first year college student.

Giraffe made a lot of research before starting this project to make sure the book isn’t wasted. Giraffe’s inspiration was from a ted talk video that was showed in class and some articles. One article Giraffe learned from was “What is Blackout Poetry?”. The article was the first step for Giraffe, her first time doing blackout poetry. The article gave her guides for blackout poetry, what to do right and what not to do. These research has gave Giraffe many ideas on how to customize the glossument book using a different way of blackout poetry.

The author’s concept was to cover the pages in black and use a folded paper with writings and drawings on the inside, when seeing the folded paper, you will be required to open it and read it, similar to opening a book again. The author wanted to give the readers a sense of a new book when opening the page within the glossument book instead of just having a feeling of opening the book before it was edited. Giraffe wanted to draw the readers to the book like its calling them to open my paper just like the title of the book, “I heard the Book Call My Name”. The material used for the pages in the book was gouache paint, sketchbook paper, pencils and inking pen.

The process on making this project requires a great sacrifice of the book. You would need to rip some pages out due to the fact that the sketchbook folded paper takes up the space and also paint every two pages with black paint. It takes a lot of time because the paint, two pages because the pages are very thin and can be paint through. It also needs to dry before being able to paint the next page. After the pages of the paint drys the artist folded and cut up sketchbook paper and glued it to the painted page. Then comes the glossary words and art that is drawn and written into the sketchbook paper. The author used only one concept, blackout poetry and didn’t want to use others because it wouldn’t look organized, she wanted to stick to one thing only.

The theme of Giraffe’s book is a plain simple book. She didn’t want to make it complicated and confused the readers and lead them to something else and this was the first time for her when it comes to art. She mostly just enjoys working on digital so she decided to work on a theme that suits her. Some colors she used in this glossument book is black and white. This project was a simple project it wasn’t all that hard but it takes time. Giraffe has used that time to create pages in a page in her book.

The glossument book The Book of Me has entries of vocabulary words learned by the artist, and they’re illustrated in a way of trying to portray the definition. This project was drawing inspiration from Tom Phillips’ The Humument, which was a book filled with blackout poetry. The Book of Me is supposed to represent a concept of being able to use anything as a canvas to convey your artwork.

Another concept that the project drew heavy inspiration is from the comic book style, or even pop art. The use of bold colors and the type of graphics there are in comic books or pop art are seen various times in The Book of Me. Each page has its own mood that it’s expressing by using different color backgrounds and materials that make each layout telling individual stories like in a comic book.

Blackout poetry wasn’t a concept that the artist tried to take away from The Humument, but the concept of having words stand out from the rest of the page is what they took from it.

The glossument book named “The Waves – A Work of Art… Altogether Joyous and Lovely” consists of illustrations based on vocabulary words. This project is inspired by “A Humument” made by Tom Phillip. Digital artists are is used to being able to undo things simply with a command, Air E.N has reflected that this book is different due to the fact that there is no such thing as a button that will undo a mistake. Digital art is able to be kept forever since it is in the computer unless someone purposely deletes it; however, the book is fragile and can be broken since it wears off as time passes or can be destroyed in the wrong environment.

This project was a departure from the artist’s previous work which focused more on representing digital illustration based on a pre-existing concept and design rather than illustrating them through pictures and words simultaneously. The artist has previously explored character design, fashion, and color which was on digital media. Having a physical book to work with helped the artist see mistakes and the option to keep them or correct them which alters what the artist finds acceptable in terms of aesthetics.

The motivation behind these pages is exploring traditional media once more and learning the aspects on how to use the materials before the artist converted to all digital. These mundane objects on all the pages, as well as the rest of the pages in the book, convey a feeling to the viewer and artist of simplicity. This could occur during work when office supplies may have been the only thing available to create art with or it could also bring them back to their childhood. There is a recurring uniformity in the way all the pages look similar, which is blackout poetry accompanied by an illustration.

The process was taping the page with masking tape first, then choosing a vocabulary word that would fit the poem on the page, and lastly, the artist illustrated accordingly. The book ended up becoming somewhat of a picture book with a poem as the images and colors take up the majority of the page. Some of the illustrations reflects the artist’s interest such as the word Valorous representing an interest in game design and concept design. On the last page Omnipotent, it reflects on the artist’s personality of easygoing or silly. And lastly, the book itself is a collection to demonstrate the artist’s skill, style and aesthetic of everything being clean, simple and fleeting.

Blackout poetry is already a technique used as highlighted by Austin Kelon in his video “Steal Like An Artist”. What the artist took away from this video is that William Burroughs got the cut-out technique to rearrange words into a new poem idea from Brion Gysin who did the same thing out of newspapers. The central idea being that there are many artists that get inspired and nothing is truly original. This was motivation for the artist to start something imperfect and to try new things. The artist took the idea of blackout poetry and the reassembling of words to utilized black masking tape in order to black out the unnecessary words on the book. Instead of a sharpie or marker the artist chose black masking tape because it is removable. Then the illustration portion was inspired by the video “Altered Book Pages- December 11, 2013” : which is a video of a person painting a page white before adding illustration. In the glossument that the artist has made, this has a similar effect to whiting out two pages to make a spread using printer paper.

Didactic panels below:

Propinquity, Oscillated, Serene, Valorous

Didatic 4: Glossument Valorous

The pages 17/18 in the book provides an illustration based on the poem underneath the post-its. The materials used including post-its was inking pens, white paper, and black masking tape. The artist’s concept to represent this word is through two people standing behind an explosion and a dragon to show bravery.

Didatic 3: Glossument Serene

The first spread of the book proves an illustration based on the poem created on the page prior. The materials used were post its, black masking tape, white paper and inking pens. The artist represents this word through a girl who’s not looking back and standing in a field of wheat gazing at the sunset at peace. The first page of the spread says “An uninterrupted view lies” making the first page consist of the sky and wheat.

Didatic 2: Glossument Oscillated

Page 19 /122 of the book provides an illustration that is based on the story created from blackout poetry. The materials used were inking pens, white/black masking tape, and paperclips. The artist represents this word with umbrellas is based on the concept that when it rains, umbrellas can be seen swaying back and forth as people walk through the city.
