Project #1

Discover:

This is My Mind Map and it is very special. It contains a vary of things that I like such as entertainment, things that I am curious about like world, and lastly things that interest me physically and mentally. My mind Map

Define:

I took three objects that I found interesting from my mind maps and I sketch them out into both stable and ambiguous figures. The airplane on the left represent me traveling and seeing the world. I was born in Guyana in South America so traveling around the world is something my family and I do often. The Second image in my refine drawing is a Stage Light. I relate to this image because growing up I went to a preforming art middle school took many lessons and spend many years perfecting my acting. The last image on the right side of the page is the sun and birds. I drew this because I am a very busy person and I never really get the time to sit and enjoy the simple and small things around me so nature is very important.Me refine drawingDevelop:

This is my final piece and I absolutely love it. I came a long way from my refine drawing and I am happy with the changes I made. I notice while inking that my hand got shaky and I found it quite difficult to fill in the shapes with the Big Brush pen.

My Curious ArtifactsDeliver:

Overall this project, taught me a lot. There are many parts in this project where I struggled but know that throughout I shown lots of improvement. I ended up having to replace one image due to the shaping and coloring of it. But I am happier with the out come.

Discover

My mind map consists of areas that interest me, places I’ve visited, and words that help to further describe and expand on these topics.

Define

These were the first items to pop into my head when I thought about my three main areas. The first is a snow globe to represent exploration/travel, the second is a pair of gold bangles that I’ve had since I was a baby to represent fashion, and the third is a paintbrush to represent design (creativity, art, self-expression, etc.)

Deliver

Personally, I found that making sure everything was symmetrical and suited according to the right measurements to be the trickiest part of this project. Additionally, my hands are a bit shaky so certain things were a little challenging for me to keep precise. If I were to alter one thing, it would be to invert the colors in my ambiguous drawings to make them appear more puzzling. Although my inked compositions certainly aren’t my best work nor ideal to my standards, hopefully my next piece will be much more improved.

I took three objects I had came up with which was my headphones, my speakers, and my keyboard. I proceeded to sketch them out in both stable and ambiguous.

Reflection:

Throughout the whole process of this project, I learned to draw with creativity and how random idea that comes up in my mind can be shown on a piece of art. I also had some really good constructive criticism from my fellow peers. I could have improved by switching the white space in my inkings to make it more ambiguous. In my next project, I can implement what I learned about white space and fix the mistakes such as accidental line marks to make my piece better.

Mind Map.

These are all the words that popped into my head when I heard the word Curiosity. From the keywords in the boxes, more words began to branch out and I connected them to other words within the Mind Map.

Define

Thumbnail Sketches.

The Sketches on the left side represents my bonds with friends, it is supposed to be an alpaca toy that one of my friends gave to me for Christmas. The Middle Sketches represents my creativity which I portrayed with a rock that I found and decided to crave into to create something new. The Right Sketches represents how music is my goto for when I really need to think.

Deliver

The hardest part of doing this project would probably have to be setting up the measurements specifically. After setting it up, the drawings and filling in the spaces that needed to be filled were easier. I enjoyed the process of creating both stable and ambiguous figures. In the future, if I were to do this again I would plan what I’d be making my figures better since the figures on the right side were thought about last minute and felt a bit rushed to me.

Curious Artifacts

(By:Elijah Castra)

Discover: This is where it all started. When tasked with this I created the mind map, as did everyone else, started with the word “curiosity” and seen where that led me to. Ultimately after doing so the 3 main things that
stood out to me were the brain/ the mind, money and clothing (there were more but I picked these 3. And I then went on to make thumbnail sketches.

Define: Now moving on to the thumbnail sketches. These sketches were a little bit difficult to come up with because originally I just made random things. But I didn’t know we had to be specific on an object and not more generalized so the first picture (below) is the first iteration of my drawing thumbnail sketches and the 2nd picture (below) is the more refined sketches/ the ones I used for the final product.

Develop: Now moving on to the final product which was turning the sketches into actual clean & finished drawings then using inking pens to finish them. This was a challenge because I had never used inking pens before. So some of my drawings look a little bit awkward I guess you could say in terms of the shading. And one of my final drawing was supposed to look like a shirt but I forgot to add something so it looks like an arrow (top right box shown in picture below) but other than that I thought it was a pretty cool and interesting project.

Discover
This is my mind map. This is where it all started. I jot down whatever was on my mind and I connected more ideas as I expanded the mind map.

Define
These are my sketches. The sketches were one of the hardest parts of this project. At first I thought it would be the easiest but It took me more time than I expected. I ended up changing one of my curious artifacts from a laptop to an apple watch because it would look better as stable and ambiguous figures.

Develop
This is my final product. I struggled a lot to get here but I’m glad I finished the project on time. One thing that I learned from this project is that art is not as easy as it looks. This project taught me a lot about what it means to be a designer because first, I had to make sure the lines and measurements were correct and then I had to make sure the Bristol sheet was clean and smooth and lastly, my figures had to make sense.

Deliver

After finalizing my project, I received a lot of positive and negative feedback which I appreciated because it’ll make me grow as a designer. Many people in my critique group liked my final project. They mainly talked about the basketball because it looks like a smiley face. I received negative feedback on my apple watch sketch because It could’ve been done differently. I personally feel like I should’ve spent more time sketching the apple watch and I shouldn’t have rushed it.
