Overall, I’m happy with the outcome. Although this project was very time consuming and took me hours of tedious work, I think the final result came out great. It’s still not as precise as I’d like it to be, however, I didn’t know I was capable of producing a piece such as this one. This project helped me discover a new skill of mine that I never even knew I had in me.

COMD 1100 Project 3

Discover:

In the first discover phase of this project, I took some hand portraits to get a sense of the contrast between black and white and grey.

Develop:

In the second part of the project, I took a self portrait and posterized it using Adobe Photoshop to make the layers and values stand out more to prepare for the final outcome of my project.

Deliver:

In the final parts of the project, I painted the best that I could even though I was not too experience with painting. It had a similar feel to my posterized image. I then created a gif from the original to the posterized to the final.

DISCOVER

I found this part of the project the easiest and I enjoyed it the most. I also liked that the concept was easy the understand.

this part was the most difficult of the project for me. It was easy at first but eventually having to draw and paint my pieces into paper I found very hard.

I Felt this project had some good and bad moments for me. I enjoyed the process and learning about values and tones. However I found painting and drawing myself especially hard. I tried my best and this was the final result. I am proud of my work and I felt that I understood the project well.

Value Portraits

Discover

This was the first part of the project, where we explored the different types of value ranges. We started with hand portraits and then we moved on to self-portraits. At first, it was difficult for me because it was hard to tell the difference between Narrow Value(light) and broad; I took a lot of broad value hand portraits and I could not get the right Narrow(light) hand portrait but I ended up getting the right one.

Define

This was the second part of the project leading to the final project. This step was a lot harder than part one because it required me to take a dramatic self-portrait which was difficult at first, but then I ended up getting the right one in class. Then, I posterized the image on photoshop which was an easy step. After I posterized the image, I started tracing my portrait on a tracing paper which was very difficult for me because of the background of my self-portrait had a variety of patterns and shapes that were hard to trace and paint.

This is my final version of the project. I used my original seld-portrait and I combined it with my posterized portrait and my scanned painting and I created a gif on photoshop. Creating the gif for me was easier than the previous step because I have more experience when it comes to working with photoshop and illustrator unlike painting, which was the first time I ever painted since elementary school.

Deliver

This project was a hard project to do because it required me to push beyond the things that I usually do. This project required me to take a variety of portraits which is something I don’t normally do. It also required painting, which was hard for me because I don’t know a lot about painting. Overall, this project was fun, even though some of the steps where difficult. I had a lot of fun taking the portraits and playing around with the effects on photoshop for the final version. Something I did really well was the creating of the gif. I feel like I used the right effects to make the final version look dramatic enough. Something that I can improve is painting. I should have used a smaller brush to paint the patterns in the background. It would have made the final version look more dramatic.

Project 3: Completed

Part 1: I am not someone who likes taking pictures at all. I’m just not really a photo person. But for this project we had to take dramatic self portraits. And out of the 3 different pictures I took, I chose this one because I felt since part of my face was cut out of frame and I used the (rule of 3rds), with also the shadow in the background it added a dramatic affect.

Part 2: The Painting was not easy but it wasn’t hard at the same time. It was interesting to see how well I could paint the portrait considering i haven’t painted in years (prior to that day). My painting could have had more detail in the face. But I had run out of paint and I also found it a tad bit challenging thing to get the right shade of grey I wanted for the painting.

Part 3:https://drive.google.com/file/d/10YBXi8WejBJ2Y2zWYBPi925oIElYD5up/view?usp=drivesdk

The GIF creation was probably the most challenging part of this entire project for me because I had never used photoshop before. And with photoshop if your a first time user the interface is gonna take a lot of getting used to. But after about 1-2 hours I manage to get it all done.

This is the final version of my project which is a GIF. I love how everything turned out. Overall my project was a success even though there were some difficulties in between. It has definitely been a while since I’ve last painted. I haven’t painted in a very long time ever since kindergarten. Something I could have done better was painting my self-portrait a little better. I don’t like seeing how my self painted portrait has like different individual shades.

I had to take a picture of myself that captures the lighting so that I’m able to posterize it in photoshop. After posterizing it, I had to trace the image on tracing paper. Then I had to trace it lightly on Bristol. After tracing it lightly, I painted it using the colors black, gray, and white

This project was a hard project to do. One thing that was really hard was the painting, I’ve never painted before so it was a hard thing to do but I feel like the painting came out nice. It was also fun doing painting for the first time in probably a while. One thing that I can improve on is the painting, I like the mask effect it gives off but I should learn how to use the different shades of gray.
