Finishing Project #2

In class today, we did some work on Project #2, including some whole-class discussion of our passion, goals for the next 5-10 years, and personal philosophy or design aesthetic, as well as a written Peer Review. Using that feedback plus any other feedback you’ve gotten in class, on our site, or from outside our course, revise Project #2.

When you’re done, post Project #2. Give your project a title, include the work in the post (rather than as an attachment), and choose the category ENG 1101 Project #2. Use the tag Phase 4: Deliver to indicate that this is the final version, plus any others that you think are relevant.

Be sure to re-read your work before you submit it on Wednesday prior to the start of class.

In class on Wednesday, you will again write a cover letter to help me reflect on the work you’re submitting.

If you have any questions about Project #2, please ask them in response to this post.

Avatar and bio draft

For my avatar i chose a character form an anime known as naruto.  So basically the character that i picked goes by the name of shikamaru. So in this anime, Shikamaru is this really intelligent guy that seems to think differently in an out of the box way from everybody else. Although very comprehensive and intelligent, He lacks work ethic and tends to find easy ways or does a lazy version of works given to him or works that are mandatory. In this particular anime, characters have great power abilities and and fighting arts. In shikamaru’s case, his powers are powerful but not as powerful as his peers but what really sets him apart and makes him superior to his peers is his ability to outsmart and make his opponents/does look silly.

I chose shikamaru because i felt as if me and him have great relation in terms of mindset and habits. I wouldn’t really consider myself to be a lazy guy but, i try to put myself in situations that have an rewarding outcome but that also requires less effort than most things to achieve the goals i have. When it comes to mindset, i consider myself to be more creative with a hint of intelligence. The thing that me and my avatar have alike is that we both think things through before making a decision and we also don’t act on impulse most of the time. To be honest i have no type of idea what i’m passionate about but, then again it is what it is.

Avatar and Bio

I’m Sam, and all i pretty much do is draw. As of late I’ve mostly been doing Fine arts, and some creative work on the side. My passions is art, whether it be 2-d work, sculptural or film, it’s all i want to do, and i can’t think of doing anything else. Recently my inspiration has shifted form people and anatomy to nature and texture. My main goal is to build up a better portfolio so that i can apply to art school, either LCAD or RISD. Further than that , my absolute dream would be to work for an animation company (Laika) and help create stop-motion films.

The avatar i chose is of yellow-ish gaunt doll, vaguely alien looking, with short red hair, straight bangs, dark sunken in blue eyes and wears a purple shirt, with a tiny smile, out-turned ears and is facing something unseen off to the upper right of the image. The doll is seated in a black bean-bag chair with a tye-dye blue pillow to their right. The image itself is low in saturation making the colors look muddy and gray-ish.  I had chosen this image because of a joke i made with a friend, saying that i look a little like a puppet if i made certain face. I saw this image and it immediately  reminded me of myself, not because i look sickly, but by the vibe it gave off, the doll looked like it was relaxing and that’s always what i’m trying, and failing, to do.

This image can definitely be misleading, seeing it with out knowing me at all, could give someone the impression that i’m a horror fan, and while that’s a little true, it doesn’t guide my aesthetic that much. I even heard one of my classmates ask if its Chucky, it’s not Chucky, but i have no idea where this image originates from. It could also be interpreted as someone who likes to scare people, some could think i set my icon up as something  “weird” to weird others out, when in actuality i don’t find this icon weird, or creepy or anything else, at all. I think it looks a little bit like me and that’s it, i even have two other puppet related images saved that also share a small resemblance to me. I want this image representing me because while i do connect with it, it also represents my aesthetic, and the type of art and feeling within my art that i try to create. But to add on to something i mentioned earlier, yes i’m trying to relax, i may not look like i am, or sometimes i struggle and maybe it’s obvious, but deep down, i’m okay, i’m an optimist.

My bio, or profile, i feel could be used to connect me with others who also share similar interests with me. I know what it’s suppose to be used for, but in reality i doubt it’ll work like that. And knowing how i’m like, i don’t think many people will take their time to read something that’s 4 paragraphs long. I think that an outsider reading my bio might consider me to be and artist, maybe even a dedicated one.  I’ve established my style, aesthetic, and i’m studying fine arts, i think with this profile i’d like to meet someone who also plans on applying to some of the same colleges i do, because all i do now is think about applying.

Bio and Avatar

Bio:  Currently a student at City tech, within communication design major. Since middle school, I’ve enjoyed drawing and writing, over time it became a hobby I would enjoy and often work on.  I usually worked on creating my own characters in drawing while in writing I would write fanfiction. Over time I have improved a lot in both areas and hope to further improve on them as well. These also inspire in working on drawing and writing childish/fantasy like ideas. I usually am open minded to many things however whenever a situation arrives that I become uncomfortable with I place the line and speak up.  Along with that, I have the belief of giving people a chance or a second one if there has been any wrongdoing after that there isn’t another. My goal in five to ten years would be possible in being able to stary on working on storyboards or animation, mostly center around anime. On the writing side, being able to start writing a book whether it be a novel or a fun children’s book. For these the general area ideas I have to work on would be within an adventure or fantasy kind of storyline.

Avatar: For my avatar, I chose a cartoon version of myself that I drew a while ago for a drawing account I have online.  The reason for this would be because it’s just me, it looks a bit childish in the style I used and utensil that makes it look like a crayon, this for me would show how open I can be almost like a child who is always open to something new or curious of something or someone new to them. That’s the feeling I had for the avatar I drew because an avatar can really only tell so much until you actually get to know someone.

Overall my thoughts in my bio and avatar satisfy me because well I just enjoy being consider as someone to easily approach and an open minded thought. This matters to me because I feel it can tell others that I am approachable or is able to talk and try to continue a concersation even if it might get akward. This can also be appropiate wuth professionals because I feel it would give then an idea on what I can work with. I guess over time the image and thoughts on my profile would change into something more sophisticated as I learn and approach new people at City Tech.

Ways of Seeing

My major is Graphic Design/Communication Design, since I was younger I have always been creative with drawing. The way I visualize myself is a very stay to myself, perfectionist, carefree person. I am very passionate about having my camera with me and being able to take pictures of people and other beautiful things. Where I see myself in five to ten years is working and doing what I love creating things that people will like. A statement that I feel that represents me and my goals for college is “ a wolf in a wolf’s skin “ it means someone who’s not afraid to wear their skin or who they are despite anyone’s opinion. I feel like this made me the person I am today and also made me realize to just be myself, also to not change over other people’s opinion, and by doing that I feel it will help me reach my goals in college to do what I want in the future.
My avatar/ profile picture represents me because like I’ve said before I am a very reserved person, some people say I like to be by myself and do my own thing, but when it comes to going to school I’ve always been told that I have this mean, tired look on my face. The emojis surrounding the girls head is basically my many moods that I show a lot. I’m always annoyed when I have to either get up early for school, dealing with siblings or just stressing over little things.
The way I think someone would or will misinterpret my avatar is that they might think that by looking at my profile picture that they may not what to interact with me if they ever see me in the halls or outside of school because I may seem like I don’t want to be bothered or seem like I’m a rude person.

Avatar [Revised]

My interest in art began this April 2018. This caused me to begin taking art more seriously as a potential profession or something that I would like to work on and improve gradually. My favorite colors are mint and lime. My rule for myself is to be forgiving to others and to believe in the possibility that anyone can change because they have the free will to do so.

My passion for art takes form as both digital and watercolor style. I like to invest my time in backgrounds and pixel art. I draw with colorful pastel colors to saturated colors depending on my mood. Throughout my years of experiencing various video games, I was inspired to aim to become a concept designer. My goal in five to ten years is to have a portfolio with various art pieces that could be used for game design. Throughout college, I hope to achieve a degree of some sort.

My avatar is a white bird and I chose a bird avatar to represent simplicity because generally it is white and round which is easy to draw and people can easily distinguish that it is a bird. The white color represents purity which reflects me as a person because I always have a pure intention when saying things or doing things and I try my best not to harm others. The idea of being harmless is embedded in this image as a cute small bird.

My icon can be misinterpreted as someone who likes birds. One can misinterpret it as someone who wants to be away from society because birds tend to fly away when people come. A majority of people may misinterpret me as a biology major or aiming for an ornithologist career. My aesthetic in art, however, is generally colorful images that utilize pastel colors. This bird is white and light grey and it falls under a tint which I personally find beautiful. My profile picture could possibly guide people towards what I find interesting when they could assume I draw in a cute style or that I like small animals. The way that the bird is perched on a branch and may seem to be watching your every move might cause people to feel a little unsettling represents me, but I tend to watch people so that I don’t end up confused when everyone else is working.

Overall I hoped this bird would convey that I’m friendly and this matters especially when getting to know people because I don’t want people to automatically assume my personality based on the things I may say or my gestures in class. The first impression always matters, but I tend to always look comfortable in class so people may assume that I might be demotivated or tired. Since I do most of my work on Open lab people will see my icon more than they see me in class because I tend to go straight home after class is over. So I’m hoping that when people see the bird they might think that I’m just there kind of like how the bird is framed in the picture standing on a branch. I want my profile picture to be interpreted as a person that comes and goes, watches what’s going on before going to the next assignment, and flying away.

I expect my avatar to develop as I meet new people who maybe share the same interests as me so I can get more specific with my image. As of now, I’m not that comfortable sharing my interest or rather I don’t have anything I’m specifically interested in which caused me to pick an animal I liked. Hopefully with the updated avatar after a few classes, I would be able to successfully convey my skill in the arts by uploading a picture of a piece I’m really proud of or representing a group that I fit in and am apart of.

My avatar is Steven Splieberg. One of the best filmmaker of all time. he has produced movies like the transformer, jurassic park film series, and all lot more film. I put him as my avatar because he is one of the people i admire. I like the way he works. he was listed as the most influential people in America.

People who don’t know who steven splieberg is might think i put this old man picture of my avatar without meaning behind it, or those who know who he is, might think i don’t know who he is or i am just trying to be fancy. But he is just one of my idol, and watching his works get me to learn filmmaking.

My Avatar

  1. The avatar that I’m using for open lab is my sketch of an anime character because this proves my ability of my type of drawing, an drawing that’s just drawn by pencil with very fine details and showing my potential that I wants to learn and improve more. I’m looking for to be a illustrator artists, therefore, with some time and practice I can create an character from my creative mind without thinking twice.

Writing about Avatars

For Wednesday’s class, I’ve asked everyone to read three pieces about avatars: “Professional protocol when choosing a Skype avatar“; Chad Renando’s “An avatar analysis: Choosing your profile picture“; and Michelle Venetucci Harvey’s “Design avatars that make sense — and be more inclusive in the process.” These are different types of readings, from message board to researched article. What ideas stand out to you? Think about this both from the point of view of someone choosing an avatar as well as from the point of view of a design student.

To complete the written portion of the homework assignment, add comments to this post that respond to this question: What ideas from these readings stand out to you as you consider choosing an avatar that represents you on the OpenLab, and as you are now officially Communication Design students. Choose two ideas to write about in a comment, and if someone has already written about the idea you wanted to write about, find something to say that adds to what that classmate (or those classmates) have written, rather than just repeating. You can use the @ to refer to someone else in the class ( e.g. you can mention @jrrosen when asking me a question), so please use that feature to refer to previous points or to bring someone back into the conversation. That means that you should expect to come back into the conversation, commenting on at least 2-3 classmates’ ideas.

We haven’t yet discussed our blogging guidelines and goals, which means we also haven’t set when work for our class is due online. Let’s say for this time, you should add your comment with enough time for classmates to comment back by the start of our class–we will adjust that deadline in the near future for upcoming work.
