Phase 2: Define Completed collages

For the Narrow High Key collage, I used a different material (a print out from the library) to create my gradient. I realize later on that the different material really stands out on the Broad ranged collage thus I took advantage of the fact that because the laser print out looks so much more HD if I placed it on top of a much more faded portrait (Narrow High Key) of myself it would be a good focal point.

Gentrifying

verb

“the process of repairing and rebuilding homes and businesses in a deteriorating area (such as an urban neighborhood) accompanied by an influx of middle-class or affluent people and that often results in the displacement of earlier, usually poorer residents” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The word was encountered through the article”Here, Poverty And Privilege Are Neighbors; Income Gaps Are a Source Of Resentment and Guilt” by

The sentence it was used in is “They range from Ms. Davis’s neighborhood, where two public housing projects bookend a gentrifying corridor of brownstones and row houses, to an area along the beach in Brooklyn where West End Avenue appears to be a stark line of demarcation ( marking of the limits) between the serene old-immigrant opulence (great wealth or luxuriousness) of Manhattan Beach and the teeming new-immigrant enclave ( social unit enclosed within or as if within foreign territory) of Brighton Beach.”

When the author utilizes this word he’s basically saying that the houses are under construction. Ms. Davis’s neighborhood has two housing projects that is in the process of repairing and rebuilding in a deteriorating alley way of brownstones and row houses. This word is also utilized in the juxtaposition project because many places in New York is constantly under construction so it relates to in progress vs completed.

Sound Visualization Mashup: Phase 4

Animation

I learned how to move images with a timeline. Although similar to video editing I did not know that you could skip frame by frame animation in photoshop. I think I could have done better in the inking, it isn’t as dynamic and interesting as I imagined it would look like. Because I tend to make my images ambiguous and chaotic it is a struggle to simplify it and make it interesting so in my next project, I will do my best to find a balance between the two. Although it is suggested that I should put an abrupt change in the animation, I struggle to find where to insert this advice because the images all match the speed and energy of the music notes. I will keep this in mind to not be constricted to only timing in future projects so that I can easily implement change.

Phase 1: Discover

Phase 2: Define

Phase 3: Develop

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 1

The high-key image sets the mood of morning time. The light is hard against the skin which because it’s by the window one can tell the sun is still out thus, morning time. The highlight of the hand is closer to the glass and the shadow is at the center of the image. It is abrupt even though it has a small gradient from white to gray. This could contribute to a serene mood because the hand is resting in the morning light.

The broad range image sets the mood of curiosity through the hand gesture brushing against the surface for texture. The light here is a gradient with various whites, grays and dark value ranges. The shadow is underneath the fingertips and by the palm while the highlights are on the thumb connecting to the skin. This could contribute to mystery because the shadow and light remind me of night time where hard shadows from the moonlight tend to appear.

The low-key image sets the mood of drama because of its intense shadows and the highlight only on the edge of the hand. It is very abrupt but still offers a gradient from gray to dark. This contributes to drama because the only lit part of the hand is on the side but the room is generally dark which makes you unknown to what the hand may be reaching out to.

Hours: 1 hour 20 minutes

Field Trip to New Lab

One thing I learned about the trip was that metal 3d printing exists but it’s very dangerous. Which is why companies choose to make prototypes of their products in plastic. In the experience of walking there, it made me think of the juxtaposition between old and new. The New lab was very advanced and technology-based while the exterior of the buildings outside seemed old. The one thing that caught my attention was the color of these plants and the doorway looking brand new, modern compared to the old brick wall that had vines growing on it. Personally, I find this very pretty because the color is the first thing that attracts my attention, then the door that has a black frame and the white curtain has a “simple” look with good contrast.

Nebulous

adjective

“indistinct, vague” – Merriam-Webster dictionary

The word was encountered in “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful?” Lex Berko

The sentence that this was encountered in was “But how do you quantify concepts as nebulous as beauty or happiness?”

The author uses this word to say that trying to take the “pleasurable detours” or the best route to pursue happiness and beauty is vague. But then they go on explaining how “we found that if you ask a large enough number of people to pick between two pictures [and choose] which one is more beautiful or which one makes them happier, consensus usually emerges”. The author uses this word to trying to convey the idea that trying to find the best detour to take is vague, because it can be the path not too far off from your destination so you can get there on time, or even the path you prefer more than another because its quiet, has more greenery, or just makes you happy in general.

Myopic

adjective

: lacking in foresight or discernment : narrow in perspective and without concern for broader implications ” Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The word was encountered in “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful?” Lex Berko

The sentence it was used in was “Your commute to work and your walk to the shop don’t have to be so myopic and destination-driven. If you give yourself an extra 10 minutes for a small detour on your journey, it can transform your experience of the city into something altogether more enjoyable”

This word was utilized to try to say that our travels don’t have to be so narrow. It doesn’t have to be from point A to point B and that we should be open to new routes so that you can see new things and experience it. The author says that the longest route is normally the prettiest and that’s probably because you take more detours to look at things you don’t normally see. You’ll see greenery and such at a much quieter neighborhood probably far from the path you normally take which for example, shortcuts could possibly be cutting through commercial and busy areas. It’s up to the person walking to choose between the best route to them whether it be quiet, shortest, beauty or happy.

Sound Visualizations: Phase 3

Animation

The sparks in the video represent the staccato song while the violin represents the violin in the legato song. The left panel on the bottom slides slowly to the violin while pitch is shown on the other violin panels. I also chose to make the smallest spark panel the one with the most energy to match the staccato beat that has higher frequency.

I worked on this for about 7 hours on the pictures and about 20 minutes to pick a song and a part I would crop.

Project #3 10/17

  • “Thousands of people pass that storefront every day, each one haunting the streets of his or her own New York, not one of them seeing the same thing.” From the reading“The Way We Live Now: 11-11-01; Lost and Found” by Colson Whitehead.
  • “Upon arriving in New York, he walked from Kennedy Airport to the nearby Crowne Plaza Hotel, a journey more perilous than he expected, because it involved a nightmare traverse of expressways with no curbs.” From the reading “A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport” by Charles Mcgrath.
  • “If you had known, perhaps you would have stepped behind the counter and shaken everyone’s hand, pulled out the disposable camera and issued posing instructions. But you had no idea. There are unheralded tipping points, a certain number of times that we will unlock the front door of an apartment. At some point you were closer to the last time than you were to the first time, and you didn’t even know it. You didn’t know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbye.” “The Way We Live Now: 11-11-01; Lost and Found” by Colson Whitehead.
  • “To an area along the beach in Brooklyn where West End Avenue appears to be a stark line of demarcation between the serene old-immigrant opulence of Manhattan Beach and the teeming new-immigrant enclave  of Brighton Beach” Here, Poverty And Privilege Are Neighbors; Income Gaps Are a Source Of Resentment and Guilt” by

These quotes address the different New York experiences because the article Lost and Found by Colson Whitehead focuses on how New Yorkers tend to take everything for granted in “their New York” which is what they experience on a day to day business. But because we have different experiences like that and the city changes every day no one’s New York is the same as another person’s because someone will always encounter a store and remember it for it selling that product, or functioning for this purpose. Then when the store goes away new tenants or people who live in the neighborhood won’t see it like that but the newly renovated cafe, restaurant etc. This relates to my juxtaposition because the new highrise may have been something else such as a store or an abandoned lot at some point. The quote from A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport” by Charles Mcgrath talks about how people may not be used to walking around New York for the first time or underestimating the time it takes to walk. This could connect to my juxtaposition because people have different experiences walking in New York. If you live farther away from Manhattan I would like to believe that the streets are normally less crowded which may be apart of your New York if you chose to live away from commercial areas. The final quote by Here, Poverty And Privilege Are Neighbors; Income Gaps Are a Source Of Resentment and Guilt” by

Project #3 10/15

I chose to take a picture of old stores on the front compared to the clearer residential buildings in the back. What’s striking is that they kept the stores the same which might make me think that the store owners may have kept their exterior the same because of nostalgia reasons or they simply didn’t have the funds or right to renovate their storefront. The story I could imagine from this is that people were attracted to how New York’s shops are so close together and wanted to live closer to the street with a variety of shops. However, the existing apartment buildings were too old thus they needed to create a highrise to meet with the demand of new tenants.  If I had to do some research on this project I may look up if the owner is currently occupying the building, when it was created and if they own rights and responsibility for these stores. I could also see when the highrise was created and if possible see an image of how the daily life on that street looked. If it seemed lively then I could perhaps conclude that it was an attraction to live there at some point.
