English Project #2 First Draft

Who is a role model you look up to in this field?

A role model I look up to in this field is Paula Scher, one of the most influential graphic designers in the world. I watched a documentary on Netflix about designers, and I saw some of Scher’s most known projects. She always found a way to grab her audience’s attention with her work by combining pop culture with typography and contemporary art. This was back when designer’s didn’t use those elements that much in their work. Another thing that I admired about Scher is the fact that she has become very successful in a male-dominated industry, and I want to follow in her footsteps one day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10?

In five years, I see myself having a full-time job with my bachelors degree  already in hand. With this job I will have enough money to move out on my own, probably in a studio at the Upper West Side. In ten years, I see myself living in Madrid, Spain working as a graphic designer for a larger company. I’ll have a higher position, and introduce new styles and techniques to the country. I hope to be influential as a result. I’ll probably be engaged, and have two children. This is where I see myself in the future, but will time take me somewhere else? Who knows.

Can you see yourself doing anything else?

To be honest, I can see myself dabbling in the acting career. However, when it really comes down to it, I only see myself 100% invested in design. I have a huge imagination and many ideas, and design is the one thing that allows me to express myself and my brand to the fullest. In design, there’s always room for improvement, even if you’re an expert. You can always change something in your work that seem off, and everyone has a different perspective when it comes to art. That’s what I love about design.

What are your past graphic design experiences?

In high school, I took multiple design classes including Digital Animation, Prototyping Design, Design Studio, and Digital Media. I designed my own app and logo, sketched up a futuristic car and made a clay mold of it, and even made a movie poster. I used Photoshop, SketchUp, and Sketch (my personal favorite). Sometimes in my free time I like to make book covers and posters of whatever comes to mind.

Why did you choose this major (COMD)?

The reason why I chose Communication Design as my major is because of the interest I have for website making and apps. I find it captivating the way I can create and build visual stories with technology that makes it very appealing. It is a skill that will continue to expand into the future.  It will continue improve, enhance and be empowering into the next generation.

I am keen to enhance my learning on this area in order to communicate and socialize with people across the spectrum of the social media and internet.  I will be able to make presentations using power point and other creative tools to share and inform the various communities of people. I feel that I  am skillful using the computer and this gives me an advantage to explore deeper into the realm of communication design. I feel that I am also a very social person who like communicating not only orally but also through the use of the communication technologies.

What are some difficulties you face in COMD?

In Communication Design I have faced some difficulties that have challenged  my abilities. One such difficulty is that I struggled with is my  drawing skills  in the Foundation Drawing class and the Graphic Design class. I am not very artful and presently does not possess many drawing skills unlike some other students. I find it difficult to get my ideas depicted  on paper in a good enough way for the viewer to understand and to see my point of view. I am taking it step by step to illustrate the figures that are needed to make the pictures come alive and I am trying to overcome these challenges.  With constant practice, hard work and motivation I am sure that I will get better and  overcome this obstacle.

What in your classes draws your attention?

I am absolutely  thrilled with the Visual Library in my Graphic Design class. It give me a chance to post things that I find interesting or important on a daily basis. I like the discussions we have about them and the way the Professor gives us an opportunity to talk about every detail in each of our pictures.  Another thing that draws my attention in one of my other classes is the belief breakdown in my Typography class. The teacher makes sure that while we are learning about San Serif and Serif Fonts she tells us the history behind it and how those things affected us today. It opened my eyes to see how advanced technology has become since the first printing press.

What are your expectations of being a COMD major in your first year?

My expectations of being a COMD major in my first year is to familiarize myself with subject matter of Typography and Photoshop in an optimal way. I expect to learn and develop myself in all the fundamentals of foundation drawing, graphic design, and all my other courses and to excel  at these learning.  I hope to improve myself  and work toward becoming the best that I can be and have my performance reflect the hard work and time that I intend to devote to this course.

Q1: Can you see yourself doing anything else?

I can see myself doing something else that has to do with animals and taking care of them. I always was fascinated by animals and how they lived in natural with other animals. As a kid growing up I was around many animals like horses, chickens, cows, and swans. My family from my father’s side owns a lot of animals and farms with a lot of open. Every time I went to visit colombia it was always a different experience with all the different things that I got to do. I always liked watching shows like national geographic and animal planet because of the interesting stories and information on the animals. I would consider becoming a vet fro animals of a more exotic background. This type of job I would also be happy doing and would love a job taking care of animals and saving there lives so that they would live another day.

Q2:- What is the class that draws your attention?

The class that draws my attention is modern art history because I ended up learning a lot about paintings and artists. The most interesting things I’ve learned in that class how have to be the like different types of modern art become of era and culture. Non-western and African were more in tune with their sense of nature in there painting with more earthy colors. When my first day of the history class I wasn’t sure that I wanted to study about painting because I thought it was only about the history and background of the era. That is, until I got more into the idea of why the painter paint what he painted. Because a great painter like monet and Matisse like to paint expressionist style of art. This left me with a good feeling that I was going to like this class and how it already made me feel like I also had my own way of artistry like other great artists.

Q3: Why did you choose COMD as your major?

I chose to be a COMD major because of my love for art and using it to make others happy. As a kid I was always a person who liked to draw and every since I want to be and illustrator because of my love for animations and comic books. I always like to create my own comic books and like to show my friends a new story every time because it brings me joy. I this field I want to be hands on with animals protection and to save animals from becoming extinct. This ties in with my love with animals because I want to be and artist that helps a cause for it become more helpful and have more of an impact on society. I today’s world see the world problems like an everyday new becomes something things happening don’t affect us. So this is why I want to become a COMD major to make a difference in the world we live in

Q4: Where do you see yourself in 5? 10? 15? years

I see myself in the next five years hopefully finished college and found a job to start working at. I hope with the next year I start to learn new things and become a better person. I want to focus on my future so that I have a wonderful life ahead. In the next ten years I hope that I can start my clothing company based on saving animals and to stop the killing of animals. This is the main focus that I want to achieve which is to have a good company that can soon grow and become a new way of vision for a brighter future for the animals. Wow in fifteen years I hope that I have a good life with a nice family two kids and enjoying every moment together. Family is everything to me and what I see myself focus more on when I get older. I hope that in those years my business becomes successful and make a real difference in the world.

Q:Do you prefer working by yourself or in a group environment?

I prefer working by myself but if I  have to do a group project, I  don’t mind. Working by myself is better because I get to see what I have to do and I  can concentrate on doing the whole thing rather than just one part. For a group project, sometimes it might be hard seeing what everyone else is working on but also, I think if the whole group keeps in check, we might be able to do the whole project and get a good grade on it. Also in group projects, maybe we might get to know more about the people in our group.

Q:Where do you think the future of design will take you?

I’m actually not sure. Maybe I might be a painter or and artist, or someone that just likes drawing. In the end, I hope it works out well for me. I hope to be the best at whatever I end up doing in the future

Q:What are some things you like to design?

Sometimes, I just like drawing random shapes and turning them into something else like some type of monster or cartoon figure or leaving it the way it is. Other times I like to draw whatever comes to my mind. I mostly like drawing something cartoony or goofy. I never really went into drawing people or real life things so I’m not really experienced in that part. Also 3d objects I’m not too experienced in either but I’m learning some of that in my foundation of drawing class.

Q: How do you intend to grow as a designer with this program?

I intend to grow by learning to draw better and also learning to design different things. It could be a sculpture, a big creative drawing, anything, as long as I improve my skills because that’s what I want to do

Question: what catches your eye when looking at other people’s work?

Answer: Something that catches my eye when I am looking at other people’s designs and artwork is the certain colors and shapes they use. In my opinion when it comes to shapes a good artist knows how to make it work for them while a great artist makes you look and the shapes in a different way that you never thought of looking at it before. It’s basically the same thing when it comes to colors. A good artist knows how to use colors that match while a great artist knows how to blend them and make them flow together in one masterpiece

Question: do you prefer working by yourself or in a group environment?

Answer: Honestly it depends on what I’m doing. I do not mind working with people but I usually prefer to work by myself because most times it allows me to do it faster. Unless it’s a really huge project and I know that I will need help with it or the project is required to have us work in groups. But sadly there is a down side to working in groups. For example, you always get one or two people who do not want to do the work but what to get the grade and credit for it but that’s not fair to the other people in the group who worked twice as hard because those people decided they wanted to do nothing.

Question: do you think your background affects your design?

I believe that my background does affect my designs. I believe this because when my grandfather was still alive he was more a sports fan and an artist, so he decided to take pictures of his favorite sports teams when he went to games, and them draw their logos when he got home. While my mother loves to draw as her number one hobby she desired more to take pictures of the most fun and the most important moments of my life, yet design them in a creative way. So now I take inspiration from both of them my drawing my favorite things along with taking pictures of my friends and family.

Question: what are some things you like to design?

Answer: This is a tough question to answer. I actually like to design two things. The first thing I like to draw is characters. For example, a few years ago me and my sister took my nephew to see Marvel live at the Barclays Center so I decided to design us t shirts representing all our favorite characters. My sister and an Iron Man shirt my nephew had a Thor shirt and I had a Captain America shirt which were all hand made by me. The second thing I like to design is my sneakers. For the past four years I have been drawing my dream sneakers and uploading them to converse.com to make my own sneaker designs. For far I have made five pairs for myself which was really fun.

Q: What are your expectations of being a COMD major in your first year?

A: In my first year of college being part of a COMD major, I expect to meet as many people as I can that share the same interests as me. I want to have connections and I want to build friendships that will last for longer than college personal connections are always important. As a college freshman being part of a COMD major I also expect to find a class that will help me choose a career in Communication Design such as Graphic Design, Illustrator, advertising design, photography, etc… I also want to learn how to manage my time. I want to be able to study, do homework and spend time with family and friends which is something I have always had a problem with when it comes to school.

Q: Can you see yourself doing anything else?

A: To be honest, I don’t think I see myself doing anything else other than design. As much as I love playing basketball I am not tall enough to play as a professional. I see myself as a graphic designer in the future but what I do as a designer might change. Right now I plan to learn as much as I can about principles of designing so that I choose the right career as I designer. I never had any plans on becoming anything else than a graphic designer but after being part of the COMD program I have learned that there are many good careers in the design field. As of now, I am interested in graphic design and advertising and I want to continue developing my design skills.

Q: What is your dream job in the field of design?

A: Because of my passion for designing, my dream job in the design field would be graphic designing. I love working with programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. To me, a dream job is a job that lets me use my creativity to do something that I love, which is designing. I want to collaborate with other people that have the same passion for design as me. I started working with photoshop in high school when I was a sophomore. I took 2 years of graphic designing and video production class which made me realize how powerful art is. In those 2 years, I learned that art is one of the best ways to express ourselves and to help others. That is why my dream job is to become a graphic designer; I want to have the power to heal, influence, bring awareness to my community and the world.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5? 10? 15? years

A: In 5 years, I see myself graduated from college starting to work at a company as a graphic designer. My goal is to start working for a big company, I prefer to work for a gaming company like Rockstar Games, Activision, Epic Games, EA or Ubisoft. Those are companies that I admire because they have made games that I have played during my childhood and teenage years. In 10 years I see myself stable, with a good job that pays me well enough for me to save money and start my own design company. In 15 years, I see myself as the owner of a marketing company or design company. I want to own a company one that that will provide a future for my kids and my family. I want to inspire other young designers to chase their dream and contribute to their communities as I hope to do.

Question 1 -Do you see yourself doing anything else?

Surprisingly I do if later on I believe ComD isn’t my major than id see myself  in some kind of photography business. I always enjoyed taking pictures and getting the angles right .I don’t own no fancy camera or anything but I do have a phone. I mostly enjoy taking pictures of like sunsets and the sky . more like anything with an amazing view . I hope later on I get a chance to take photography at City Tech . I know photography sounds easy and all but I believe there is also a lot of information that tags along with the major . other than that I’d like to teach like some type of art class for like an elementary school that would be like my safe career in a way.I enjoy the company of children and art would be a fun way to interact with them .

Question 2- What is the class that draws your attention ?

The class that is drawing my attention right now is typography . I never really knew that typography was a subject . I never really knew it had so much information and background . But so far these first couple of weeks it has grabbed my attention although its a late class from 6:00pm to 8:30pm . I actually enjoy going to it . Not only professor Vargas teaches very well but the way he explains certain information makes me want to learn more. It’s a lot of vocabulary right now and I know I shouldn’t stress over it but its about time I should start studying .We are currently working on a project with our name and inDesign and I’m having lots of fun . I am looking forward to the rest of this semester .

Question #3-within COMD which track would you want to pursue ?

I am actually very interested in a couple of branches . Advertising , packaging design and photography. Over the summer I participated in the One Club x Kick off. It was this 3 day program which focused on ComD students and Advertising. It was a competition and the company was Burger King . the topic was Halloween and we had to make a spooky” advertisement . This 3 day workshop gave me a huge idea of how the industry works and I really enjoyed working with new people and being able to create new ideas. I can really image myself working in this branch of design as well as packaging and theres photography within both careers so I’m for anything .All it takes is passion, dedication ,creativity and ones belief in themselves .

Question #4-what is your motivation

My motivation ? for anything and mostly everything its my family . My parents play a big role , they believe in me so I believe in me . I believe I Can accomplish anything wether I’m a nurse, teacher, designer. They always push me to do better . Im in ComD because I believe I have the creativity to make something out of nothing . other than that my motivation has been myself for a better future and to help others .Within Com D I believe I can help people by informing them about social problems or to inform the uninformed . My motivation personally is music and amazing sunset/sky views . I love it when the sky changes into different colors . Also peaceful and quiet locations where I can just think.

Q: Why did you choose COMD as your major?

A: I chose Comd as my major because I wanted to experience more techniques for art, and since it’s graphic design based. All my other previous ways of art have been painting to drawing and photography. Therefore I wanted to expand my creative skills so I can apply it to my future projects or jobs. Entering the major also because it’s about communication , and teamwork, meaning that every artwork created by students gets criticized so that way one can get better with their art since they’re receiving feedback on how to fix things or just on ideas that can be added; and I personally feel that this helps a person grow as an artist.

Q:What are your expectations of being a COMD major in your first year?

A: What I expect of the first year in comd is to create many projects as we can before the semester ends. Every project will be based off a different topic and objective. With every project will come a challenge so that will make one feel frustrated but then open minded on how to adjust their creative process even as to switching up the style to make things workout. I also expect for myself to get taught new creative skills to therefore carry with me along the way and apply them to my works of art. And most importantly I get to learn the importance and reason of how Design works and how does it apply to the world.

Q: Can you see yourself doing anything else?

A: To be honest yeah, because I do have a sense other other art fields like Illustration and Photography. So with in the Illustration field I can sketch up landscapes or portraits and even designs; while having done that I could find a way in order to sell my art to people. In some cases people might seek something with color, therefore making me want to create paintings aswell, but it all starts off with a sketch. Next with Photography I could set up business cards and give them to people or leave them at public areas. With photography I’ve learned how to use different settings for example like the iso, apeture , and shutter; which affects the way the photograph will come out aswell as how I want it to appear.

Q: What are your past graphic design experiences

A: Back in High school , while sophomore year I was given a tech class. In that tech class what was taught was adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. My teacher showed us the basics first with how to use the tools and when they were needed. Every day there was a new lesson given and different art was made with the class using the tools that were taught. I remember the first thing I was introduced to was rgb , which is red, green, and blue light which together creates the full spectrum of colors and I thought that was pretty cool since I never knew about that.

Project #2 First Draft

Question: Where do you see yourself in 5? 10? 15? years

In 5 years, I imagine myself already graduated from college with a Bachelor’s Degree. By that time I will already have a suitable job, earning money for both me and my parents. This way my dad can finally retire from his job. He worked really hard for my family of 4. In 10 years, I imagine myself purchasing my very first house but definitely not my dream house because it’s going to take more than 10 years to pursue my dream house. Also in 10 years, I’ll probably be working for another company. In 15 years, I’ll be 33 years old. I will probably have a family by then with one or two children. I can imagine myself having a higher rank than I was 15 years ago. No one can ever predict what’s going to happen in the future.

Question: What other skills do you want to learn in this program?

I would want to learn how to draw better. I’m not really a good drawer and I don’t consider myself as a good drawer even though people say I draw better than them. I learned from someone who once said: “No artist will ever say their art is perfect”. I think that is true because as an artist/designer you’re creating new things each time you do a project. You won’t consider yourself the “best” designer because there are better designers out there in the world. Another skill I want to learn is how to use photoshop or use any Adobe software. I get the hang of using photoshop in high school but not the other adobe software.

Question: Can you see yourself doing anything else?

I cannot imagine myself doing something else other than design. My mom told me to be a nurse. Literally every Asian parent tells their children to be either a doctor, nurse, lawyer, an accountant…etc. I’m definitely not following what they wanted me to be. One of my friend said to be kindergarten teacher since I love being around with children. However, children can be annoying sometimes. My other friend told me to be a photographer and I have thought of being one, however, anyone can be a photographer. It’s not necessary to go to college just to be a photographer. Photography is just a hobby of mine. It’s not really something I would want to become. The right and the best job for me would be designing.

Question: What are your past graphic design experiences

In high school (sophomore year) I was in Graphic Design. We had a project about doing your own logo and your own business card. Overall I loved how my logo/business card turned out. The logo I did has a feather with my name below it. In my junior year in photography class, I had a project based on advertising. We had to choose a product if what we are advertising and make it an advertisement. In my senior year of high school in economics, we had to make another advertisement commercial. Whoever wins that advertisement commercial does not get to do the final exam. Me and my friend we teamed up and drew the commercial out. My friend did the most work since she’s a better drawer than I am and I did the color. We ended up winning the advertisement commercial which was shocking.

Project #2 First Draft

Q: How do you intend to grow as a designer with this program ?

A: I intend to grow by taking as  many classes i can to better grasp my knowledge of design. There are so many professors in this program that either worked in this field for so many years, or studied in this field for so many years. So me as a learner i want to take advantage of that as much as i can by showing them my work, getting their professional feedback from it, learn from my mistakes to better myself. And there are so many workshops, or clubs, or either events that i’ll definitely go to, to gain more knowledge about design, know the in’s and out’s of it. There are so many peers i can talk to, to get their input of a certain design, just to see how other creative minds like myself think.

Q: How do you intend to use the skill set you learn to influence your community ?

A: I intend to do that by being a voice, or bigger voice for people who don’t have it. To me design is two things, one of which is the obvious, is about expressing your creative ideas or thoughts for other people to see. And two, design is about being that voice for people when the time calls for it. Being a designer, you have the opportunity to uplift a community and be that voice. There are so many designers who made artwork to help out a group of people, or to represent a social issue. There are so many aspects to designing, me as a designer i want to use my skill set to help other people, to inspire people, or just to create new innovative art as the years go on.

Q: Can you see yourself doing anything else ?

A: To be honest with you, designing is the one and only thing i can see myself doing for years to come. I just view myself as a creative person, I’ve been drawing since i was  13 years old. Being so connected to designing limits all the other things i can do. And  i’m in school to study design, learn as many skills i can to perfect my craft. So to be clear, i don’t see myself doing anything else but designing.

Q: What are your expectations of being a COMD major in your first year ?

A: I have very high expectations because i’m dedicated to becoming the best designer i can be. I want to learn everything i can  so i can apply it to my craft. I’m taking a couple classes for my comd major, and many more to come. So far i’m learning a lot of stuff i never knew, and i’m very confident that it will help me succeed in the design industry once i’m done with school. So far my first year in this comd major has been great, great professors, gaining so much new knowledge, and i’m adapting very well to it.
