Discourse Communities

In high school I inadvertently joined a discourse group for a group of boys that have and play Playstation 4. It wasn’t really directly me trying to join their but more so I befriended a majority of the group while I was playing online with them. I had already known a few members since freshman year and decided to play with them and found that some people that I didn’t know were already in the gaming session. I usually don’t associate with people I don’t know but I decided to join the session to have a good time for the mean while. The group liked my vibe, said I was one the funniest guys they’ve ever met and invited me to join their PS4 chat. I never intended to join or even knew about the group but I knew for sure that I was interested in play with those guys again.

When I came to USA, I only knew about American dream. For me American dream means easy access to all the fundamental rights. However after coming to this country i realized that language barrier is the most difficult thing in person’s life. As my native language is not English,I had difficulty to communicate with people and even express myself properly. Sometimes I want to express something but people misunderstood me. Sadly I felt so less confident that I’m unable to express myself properly. It’s not easy to blend yourself with new culture, new community and new country. Learning a language could be a possible thing But learning a culture, history is not going to happen in a glance but i will try my best to adopt it . In my first school in the USA,I met a lot of students of different languages and cultures. I adopted some of their cultures and they adopted some of mine. That’s how I made lot of friends with different cultures from different countries.

DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES

The time I tried to join a new discourse community was a high school because it’s a new setting, new people, and new rules. What happened in this new discourse community was I had to find my own circle to hang out with every day I had to hand in my work on time.

However, I also joined clubs in my high school which was a little hard because there were all these upper-classmen before me and I had to find a way to fit in with them and be friends with them as well

Discourse Communities

A time when I was able to join a new discourse community was in 2010 when I moved here to NYC.  It was during the middle of 4th grade and I wasn’t sure if the students in my new school were going to speak Spanish and if I would get along with them. However, the class I was in was bilingual and most of the students spoke Spanish and I became really close with a group of my new classmates. There were a lot of things we could relate to like the fact that we were Dominican and our parents acted the same made us close friends.

DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES

When I came America, I was took high school. There was so many foreign students, which had different language with me. Thus, I tried to join their discussion communities for communication. However, the difference of language made me difficult to assimilate into them. Althought I knew it will spend much time to join the group of those students who spoke different language, I still believed that I could do it, because here is America rather than China, I had to try my best to assimilate into foreign students.
