Field Trip to BRIC Biennial

“Citi Bank” by Aaron Gilbert

Medium: Oil on canvas

Out of all different pieces of art, this one stood out to me. I’ve experienced people begging for help because they were in need, and this makes you grateful for everything that you do have. Tons of people aren’t fortunate with things that most people have in their possession, and this piece of art shows/proves that. The feeling I automatically get from this piece is a sense of hopelessness and desperation, which can be very overwhelming when you’re in a situation like this.

Value Added Portraits: Phase 4

I’ll be 100% honest, this project was kind of difficult for me. For starters the painting for me was rough, because everything started to smudge. Even though I had a difficult time with the paint, I was able to get a composition that I actually liked out of it. I haven’t used any type of paint in years, so I wasn’t actually shocked that I ended up with those results.. This project was interesting for me, but I actually do want to work on my painting skills. I’m glad that I faced some hardships when it came to this project, I’ll be sure to learn from any mistakes that I’ve made.

Midterm Post

Before completing these projects, I didn’t have too much insight on the topics we’ve covered. Out of all 3 projects, my favorite one was the Sound Visualizations. Being able to combine music and art was amazing, I would surely want to do that again. Throughout the projects my vocabulary expanded as well, I now know the clear meanings of different terms. Some things I would’ve done differently would’ve been to ask more questions, and make sure I didn’t procrastinate too much. On upcoming projects I want to be more organized and neater, so that my future work shows a lot more progress.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 1

The picture of the mouse without the filter is extremely bright, but with the filter I was able to see the High-key relationship. The area surrounding the mouse is clearly light, and the mouse has it’s own space to where this connection can be seen. Highlight throughout the mouse and the empty classroom can significantly be observed. The room is filled with  shadow and the mouse has a minimal viewing of shadow nearby it. These two features have a strong impact on the expressive quality of the two potraits. The mouse creates a sense of isolation, like it’s in it’s own world away from the whole computer. High-key is defined as when the values of an image are predominately light.

When walking around the hallway I noticed that the entire class was filled with light, except the bottom corner. The corner of the classroom appeared to be presumably dark, in other words lowkey. Low-key can be defined as when the value of an image is predominately dark. The center of the classroom has a continous amount of light, therefore can be viewed as High-key. To be able to identify this portrait from the camera as high-key, you would have to zoom in.

Sound Visualization: Phase 4

This project for me was very interesting. I enjoyed collaborating music and art together, because those are my two favorite things. I’ve gained knowledge in understanding the difference between Staccato and Legato, it’s something that I didn’t know anything about before. Next time I want to create more thumbnail’s because those definitely helped me out, it enabled me to organize what I wanted to draw. The critique in class helped me identify my weaknesses, therefore next time I will make sure my composition is much more detailed and neat.

Sound Visualizations: Phase 3

This was my first time using Photoshop, when it came to making videos. I enjoyed being able to include music and allow my composition to come to life. I would definitely do something like this in my free time, so I can increase my understanding with timelines on Photoshop. Creating this was fun for me ,but it was also challenging. Some critique is something that I want to receive, so that I can better my creation now and even if I do something like this in the future.
