Aural Topographies : Visualizing Sound

The song’s rhythm begins with slow speed and the pattern will look like a soft or steady line. After the initiation, the song begins the exposition, the rhythm increases the speed, and more musical instruments come out. The pattern will change to more varieties, along the change of the song. When the song finishes its exposition, a small climax comes out and begins with repetition. The volume is increasing during the repetition, so the pattern will probably rise up along with the volume. After the climax repetition ends, the rhythm repeat the exposition, and then move to the second small climax.

However, after second small climax ends its repetition, the song begins with a new different rhythm. This rhythm is like a poetry that repeating with a fast speed. After this rhythm ends, the song moves to the biggest climax. This time, the volume is much bigger and all musical instruments are there to create varieties. After the climax once again ends its repetition, the poetry comes back again with a faster speed. At this point, the pattern will be confusing after two small climaxes and one big final climax. Finally, the song can be repeating forever, however, the song cancels all the musical instruments’ sound and ends with a simple lyric. At the end, I want to mention that the song ends with a simple lyric before every climax come. I believe the song creates a unity to help people quickly to rise and fall their emotion in a brief moment.

Project #1, Reflection

The first project we had was to introduce ourselves here on the OpenLab. Pretty easy since we already did this in class basically. Secondly, commenting on peer work. I learned a little bit more about how to describe myself, as well as some things about everyone in class.

I feel like what I got out of this was getting to know some people more without the awkwardness of going up to them and striking conversation. This helps because sometimes, most of the time, I keep to myself and tend to stay out of the way. I think I did a pretty good job in describing myself overall when it came to why I chose certain images for certain things. What I could’ve worked on was dedication. Not because of the work involved, but because of my time management. I am torn between school and work and finding time to sit down and work can be challenging. I’m adapting still to this new addition to an already packed schedule, but I will persevere and manage everything better and efficiently.

Trip.

Our first trip was down to lower Manhattan, to a zine exhibit being held at the center for book arts, and to the Rubin Museum. I really enjoyed my time there, so much that I zoned out while I was taking in everything that was there. Many pieces were really captivating to me not only because of their content, but of the diversity that sat in that room. We were given a small “tour” and learned a bit about printing and type, I found that whole process really great, much better and personal than modern print (but i still would choose modern over old fashioned any day!). At the museum, we took a look at the Francesco Clemente installation. It was a collaboration of his works throughout the 80’s up to now, based on his experiences in India. I was drawn to the piece called “Hunger”. It depicted a common man taking a bite out of the serpent eating its own tail, or the Ouroborus. It shows a cycle of life, a rebirth if you will. It meant to me that the beliefs in India were those of reincarnation and man’s “hunger” to pursue that. I wrote a few pages about it in my sketchbook.

Caught my eye.

This work in particular really grabbed my attention at the center for book arts as I browsed through it. The authors remark at the bottom was one that to me signaled a relationship between the reader and author, one of the author being completely comfortable being themselves to the reader. I thought that this level of honesty and lack of censorship is what I’d be comfortable with.

I do hope one for one project we will in turn, create our own zines and mass produce them for our classmates and even the school if we feel like it. I had a good time.

Field Trip!!

On September 22nd, 2014 our class took a trip to the Centre for Book Arts and the Rubin Museum. I think we were in the Lower East Side in Manhattan, though I’m not exactly sure. The trip was a very nice experience because we got to see what we’ve begun learning in class such as  ambiguity.

The Centre for Book Arts was fascinating as I’ve now seen how books are put together. Though it’s own exhibit was smaller, there were some interesting things to see such as what looked like a sculpture of a woman’s dress. As a joke I remember thinking to myself, “it looks like a giant Oreo stacked up”. During the speech about book binding I saw how much complicated it was to print things onto paper and I don’t think I would’ve had the patience to go through every individual letter just to write something into a poster. It made me grateful to printing from an ink printer and how easy it is now  than it was in the past.

I'm not sure what to make of this, but it reminds me of a woman in a dress.

The Rubin Museum is another story. Though a bit of a walk from the Centre for Book Arts, it too had great pieces of artwork to show. The museum had a variety of paintings that were… phallic shaped and in detail. A little unusual in my opinion but nonetheless very nicely done. Very stable as well, and no ambiguity to question of. Other than the phallic shaped paintings, I saw a particular one that showed what looked like a sci-fi prop. It was standing on its own legs and it liked like it could walk if given the means. Outside of the art, the building itself is very nicely built and designed especially the lobby.

I enjoyed this trip and I look forward to more trips like this in the near future.

Field trip: Reflections

During this field trip, I was able to go more into depth of various artist and their own pieces of art work. An example of the art work we have seen is the one posted below. When I first saw this, I only saw a figure of what looked like a dress. However, after looked closer into the sculpture I saw numerous cut outs of figures that were arranged in a way that looked like they told a story. Each one had a different positions that followed the last in a sequence form. These eye catching detailed patterns brought this piece of art to life in a way that I did not see in any of the others.

Field Trip Reflections

In the field trip, we went to the Center for Book Arts. First, we learnt about the history of the printing process and the printing knowledge. I found out that is not easy to create an article by using the letters one by one to print on the paper. We should feel thankful that the technology had improved our life more easily. In addition, we looked at industrial printing machines which how technology helped people on the printing process. Furthermore, we also leant how important is a binding is for a book. Without bindings, books are not easy to organize and not easy to be protected. At the end, I took a picture of “Death Ship”, and it attracts me, because the style is different from others. The picture is carrying out a historical style but with some modern manga style.

After the zines exhibit, we went to the Rubin Museum to visit some art works that are combined with Indian culture. In the museum, each art works are not simply images, they all require our imagination to understand. However, I found out that most of the art works are too much presenting human bodies, so I feel little dislikes of some of the art works. Fortunately, I do find out some interesting craft art works. The bottom of the picture is the sketch and I come out with my own interpretation. The box is like a wall that limits people connects to outside. The only way they can know about the outside is the radio. It symbols that people are unable to connect to the world, they only can depend on what they had been told on the radio. No matter how beautiful the story had been told by the radio, people still living inside of the box. It is similar with North Korea that people are being limited and the only sound they can know is from the government.

Authenticity

Authenticity- Adjective

Definition- Something or someone that is real or genuine and that is not fake.

Definition Location- http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/authenticity?show=0&t=1411949691

I remember hearing this word again in the video played during English class and how reproduction of images has allowed an ease of access that has created various definitions for images such as The Mona Lisa and how famous authentic images can only be seen in one place. I remember this word by thinking of famous painting that are one of a kind in the sense of the history behind it rather copies of them that are not the real deal.

Reproduction(Noun)

Reproduction- Noun

Definition- The act of copying something like a document, book or even a sound.

Definition Location- http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/reproduction

Where I first encountered this word- I remember encountering this word during the video that was played during English class regarding how mass production and the camera has changed the singular meaning or message of a drawing. When thinking about Reproduction I think about old VHS and the mass production of disney movies
