Field Trip Reflection

The field trip on Monday was rather fun and incredibly interesting. For me the funnest part of the trip was looking at the zines and images people made, such as the Bush one which is pretty out there. We also learned about letter printing and the way it has evolved, it’s pretty interesting knowing how difficult but more involved printing was a few decades ago. Afterward we visited an art exhibit that featured art from an artist who visited India at one point. The symbolism behind his art I found to be rather difficult to understand but still very unique in the way it makes one think about the world.

Experience at the BRIC art museum

While I’m rather late to the party when it comes to recording my experiences about the art museum I still remember things about it rather vividly, unfortunately I wasn’t able to take pictures due to the absence of my camera but I will do my best to describe the occasion. The Bric Art museum is located near the Fulton Mall and at the time was holding an art exhibition. Many of the art pieces were really abstract and could signify various things I wasn’t exactly able to deduce what any of the actually meant but they were pretty neat. My favorite out of the bunch would have to be the metal chains that dangled from the ceiling in my eyes it represented someone who feels held back and feels that they can’t escape even though the exit is right under their noses or it could be the other way around and it’s just someone who doesn’t want to exit those chains. We also were shown the studio at the second floor which was home to an exhibition that was rather creepy and not something you would want to be stuck with alone. Another thing that caught my attention was the lessons the Bric art center offers on broadcasting and even allowing one to make their own shows which is pretty neat and allows for newbies to get a start in television. We also came across Professor Spevack’s own exhibition which is an indoor outhouse(or as a make-out booth as some people called it) while I didn’t go in it due to distractions I thought the concept was both interesting and pretty silly in a good way. If I had the chance to go I would definitely plan another visit with friends if possible and the option to be able to exhibit my own art is also pretty neat as well.

“Wonder” Exhibition

This work by Ming Yin Wong, is the most favorite one for me.  The  main character in this picture should be the women, she seems like to show peace, wisdom, or confidence. However when I moved  my eyes upper, I saw a plane fling and leaving a white line upon her.  I feel like ironic in this work.   The  sculpture is felt serious, but the plane left a funny impression for me, like a joke.  The whole picture tells me a story that the goddess of courage is encouraging people to fight enemies, at the same time, the plane’s flying and saying, “dont worry about me,I’m just a stranger.  ” They ‘ve made a contrast which is really interesting.

Favorite Photo By a student named Daniel Oliverio

Favorite Photo By a student named Daniel Oliverio

As we first walked through the hall of so many other beautiful photos displayed, I couldn’t stop staring at this one photo. So, obliviously it’s my favorite out of all of them. It reminded me of the Project#3 with the different values, Narrow, broad, high and low. This picture mostly shows to be a low/narrow value  (even though you can see a bit of green from the grass but whatever). It doesn’t seem to have the exact focal point because of the scattered coins, words/numbers and grass but I didn’t think the photographer wanted to show the exact focal point. I can’t assume in what he wanted to show. Also, I loved how the photo is zoomed in closely to show the dramatic impact on the tombstone.

BHS: Map research

During our field trip to the Brooklyn Historical Society, we paid a visit to their library to analyze and study a few maps about Brooklyn and how its maps and streets came to be. There were several maps that were spread out, weather they be Subway maps, maps of some areas of Brooklyn, or all of New York state, they all kinda told a small story of the past. during my research, i noticed how back then they used maps a a type of advertisement for companies and what not. the map below is an older map of the brand new subway transit system, before the number and letter system came to be later on. Not only does this map have old subway routes, but it also told you a little about how the economy back then as seen by the 25 cent advertisement in one of the pictures below. also in the back of the map, i found an advertisement to the company who made the maps, also mean that the company who made this subway map has made other maps, perhaps even more of Brooklyn.

BHS: Wonder Exhibit

From what i can gather, the wonder exhibit is a compilation of photographs taken by City tech students in a near by graveyard in which i cannot remember the name of. The exhibit was full of beautifully taken pictures from the surrounding area. some pictures were about the gravestones, or the scenery around the graveyard such as the houses, ponds, and statues. Out of all the pictures in the gallery, my favorite one has to be the one below because its just so vibrant and just  gives the area a sense of  age and atmosphere. the Hue around the building  just pops out and gives the picture a pretty broad look. I just love the design of the building and its structure, the person who took this picture does a great job displaying this. Overall, its a beautiful picture and i think its the best of all of the others that are displayed in the exhibit.

In “Wonder” exhibition, the work from Eliana Hamilton has captured my eyes. First, background and foreground are making contrast, the background is vague and the foreground is very clearly. In addition, the branches are the movement indicated punctum in this picture. The picture is giving me a sense of peaceful and relax, because the picture successfully indicates the color of nature. Colors of Green and Pink dominate the picture that creates studium to capture viewer’s interest. In the end, I really like the feeling in this picture, it successfully presents the idea of peace and nature.

In this field trip, we went to Brooklyn Historical Society to visit their library and research Brooklyn maps development. We were separated into a group of 3 to 4 people, and start to analyse several maps. While I analyzing these maps, I am surprised that people could create the map so accurate without any technology support. For examples, the first map is manmade that created in 1868. However, the map indicated streets and acres very clear by using a compass and calculation in latitude and longitude. The second map was an old subway system map that published in 1955. The old subway system was created by four different companies. In addition, without modern technology, the map is still able to use color to indicate different routes to different direction. The map also contains many advertisements that indicate the location of parks, buildings, and landmark with short brief descriptions. The last map was Downtown Brooklyn Map, indicated what type of buildings are with color codes and presented New York City with grids. The map indicated the Navy Yard which related to our reading assignment “Reading Lucy.” This is a great opportunity to understand the development of city planning in New York City.

BHS Research

Map of the BK subway lines

Boro Hall Civil Center 1955; flat maps b 1955 fl ( BK subway maps)

On today’s field trip we went into the BHS library which consisted of all sorts of primary information that can’t be found anywhere else. We mainly focused on maps of Brooklyn from different time periods . This is something that I would most likely include into project 4. For example, in my group we had a manuscript map of Brooklyn in 1856 which depicted the cut-off boundaries of farm lands that people owned. There was also a clear detailed drawing of the cliff of Brooklyn Heights. This was before the construction of the Brooklyn bridge, so the steam boat was a popular way to travel between the boroughs. Another map, which was printed, displays the subway map map from 1955. As we know, the train system was originally a series of companies that operated in different ways. This map is a significant piece of history that I could add to my project. Lastly, we saw a large booklet of maps that was created by the fire department during the time. From what I learned in class, civilians that lived in homes made of wood would be charged higher than someone in a brick house because of the higher chance of a fire. These different maps of Brooklyn give me a better understanding of it’s history that goes way beyond my time. Each version allowed me to see every phase that has come. I should have a better grasp of this concept from the research which will be a good guide for this project.
