This assignment was really helpful and effective to me especially because I don’t really try to learn deeply about some glossary that I don’t know the definition even though I don’t know most of the vocabularies in a literature. To be honest, it is very hard for me to finish reading a novel that is written in English because there are too many of vocabularies that I do not know the meaning and I have to give up reading it. If I had to, I would search the meaning of every words that I don’t know to finish a book, but it takes hours to understand a couple of pages. So when I first started doing the assignment, I did not know what to do because there were already more than 15 words that I don’t know the meaning in the first two readings. I had to have my laptop right in front of me to read the fictions we had. It took longer time to finish reading than the time other people might took, but I had to look for the meaning of number of vocabularies. However I would forget most of the definitions I found, except for the ones that I posted on our course site. Also I tried hard to find most difficult vocabularies out of the ones that I do not know, (because there were too many that I don’t know) so it was harder for me to do the assignment. I didn’t want to use any words that I found for the assignment. To be honest, this assignment was harder than I thought in the beginning, but it was very useful because I remember most of the vocabularies that I posted online.

In completing the glossary assignment I have learned many new words that I have never heard or knew the meaning of before. While reading the texts this semester, there were numerous words that I did not know the meaning of. When I come across a word I did not know while reading, I would assume what those words meant with the use of context clues to understand their meanings. Sometimes I had no idea what the word meant and had to look it up after I finished reading. This assignment has helped me understand the definitions of new words and in some passages it helped me understand what was going on.  Before this assignment, I would have usually skipped an unknown word. I have benefited from actually taking the time to find the definitions of these words and plan to continue this process in the future.

I always mark words I do not know when I read a book, I did the same whilst reading through various texts for school the only difference was that I actually looked them up with the thought of posting them online. (even though I slacked on that really bad) Even so, I did look them up. I usually only look up words when I read on my tablet since it’s easy to highlight a word and get it’s meaning. This exercise was a good way to get into the habit of looking up words right away as opposed to just marking them with the intention of getting back to them and not doing so. I also try to use these words as much as possible to add them into my daily vocabulary. Overall, as tedious as it was I am glad I was forced to look up many words and then post whichever ones weren’t posted yet.  Definitely a good challenge for myself since pausing and writing down words makes reading much less fun.

My Reflection

The glossary assignment has affected my reading process in a tremendous way. I found myself always stopping to look up words whenever I am unfamiliar with the word. There were times I would just pass over the word without looking up the definition. When I usually come across a word I don’t know, I would first look for context clues to see if I can get an idea of what the word might mean. This allows me to use logical thinking. Another thing I have noticed is that when I discover a new word, I try or sometimes catch myself using it in my vocabulary. Sometimes I may not know how to word it correctly in a sentence, but I noticed I am able to think of the word when it comes to using it in a situation such as my papers.  The glossary that was written every week between myself and the other students was very helpful. There were plenty of times I did not know a word another student did not know and I was able to learn the meaning from them. This also allowed me to look up classmates words that I did not know in order for us as a class to learn new word because I did not want to re-post the same exact word as them. In addition, there could have been times there were words we may have miss while reading another classmate might not know, and we were able to check the glossary as a guide. Overall, I feel this was a great tool we used online to build our vocabulary.

My reflection:

This assignment was very useful and a good way to enrich my vocabulary. Sometimes I encounter some words which I don’t understand, since I live in an English speaking society most words are  repeated in our daily lives. Due to this repetition, I can figure out away to understand them according to their context and the way they are told. But some words are only written in books and stories, using this tool helps me a lot to understand their meaning and use them in discussions and conversations. However, this assignment was limited to learn 1 word per week, which means 15 words for the whole semester, I’ll keep doing the same thing even after the semester is over.

Reflection

As I was doing the glossary entries throughout the semester, I learned new words that I was never exposed to.  The glossary assignment helped me to put new words in my vocabulary and I learned that a word could have many meanings to it. For example, the words privy and tarry had different meanings to it. Privy meant to be private or withdrawn but it also meant a toilet or outhouse where someone would urinate and defecate (Merriam-Webster). Tarry meant to abide or stay at a place but it also meant not to be tardy or in a delay to do something (Merriam-Webster). Furthermore, there were words in the assigned readings that were not of my knowledge, so, looking up their definitions was a great tool for me to understand the readings. Usually, I would read a text and if I stumbled upon a word that was confusing to me, I would bypass it and continue reading until I was done reading the text. However, the glossary assignment made me look up the word that I was confused about before I proceeded to finish reading the text. Lastly, the words in my glossary entries made me start using them in papers that I was writing for in this class and for my other classes as well.
