Project 2 Part 2

Poem With Picture

If you can’t read it here’s what I wrote.

Motherly Love

Running away and hiding in a shed.

I throw one and it hits it head.

There is now a pool of red.

A baby lays on its back like when it’s on its bed.

Not looking them in the eye.

Because I don’t want to cry.

Holding in the pain.

While picking another by the ankle like a crane.

I love them so much that I must take their life.

I can’t let them be born into a world of slavery and strife.

I decided to write a poem about the scene where Sethe is in the shed trying to kill her children. I choose this picture to go along with my poem because this picture is based off a true story of Margret Garner. She was also a slave who killed her child when faced with recapture under the Fugitive Slave Act. This picture is exactly like what happened in Beloved when Sethe was trying to kill her kids. So I thought I should use this picture because it goes with the scene I choose.

Part 2

I decided to draw an eye depicting what in my opinion Sethe was seeing during the scene where she killed beloved.

In the novel they tell you she does not stare at the baby in her arms or the infant by her side (Denver and Beloved). So I decided to draw an angel to depict the freedom she thought she is giving her children. With a boy laying in blood on the far left of her pupil, an image that would be in her peripheral vision. Her pupil is constricted due to the emotions I imagine would be going through her mind for having to kill her children (fear, anxiety, etc) I also drew prominent red veins and bags under her eyes to overall make her eyes looks tired to showcase her fatigue.

Sethe and the Chokecherry tree

I decided to create my own image. This drawing is of Sethe and her journey to her children. Getting to them means she’s a free woman.

Meaning behind this image is Seth’s life in one. She’s pregnant leaning on a Chokecherry tree [Amy Denver described it that way]. Then there’s the river where she has Denver and the escape boat. Everything here was an effect of Sethe wanting to be a free women. If she didnt let her children escape she proably wouldnt have been beaten, without her trying to eascpe to the unknown her feet wouldnt have swelled. Without her feet being swollen she wouldnt have stopped in time to find Amy Denver, without the river Sethe wouldnt have delivered Denver safely and without the boat they wouldnt have crossed the river. Pictures are worth a thousand words and here is Sethe’s thousands words.

 

Project 2 Halle’s View

The story “Beloved” by Toni Morrison has a very interesting writing style. Morrison uses flashbacks as a way to understand the character and their actions. Halle doesn’t have a voice of his own In “Beloved”, and I feel like he would have a lot to say. We learn about him mostly through Sethe’s flashback, and of his fate from Paul D’s memories. We find out that after seeing the things he did, Halle went crazy, and that is why he never showed up for Sethe.  One could only imagine what went though his mind, not being able to help his wife for fear of death. Going insane was the only way his mind could deal with the (psychological) pain. In this “missing chapter” from “Beloved,” we see Halle’s last few hours of sound mind, his reason for hiding out, and what went through his mind before it snapped.

Project 2 Part 2

Halle is in the rafters, right above his wife. It was easy to remain hidden from view in the darkness. He was thankful for that, for if she knew he was hiding, she would know what a coward he was.  How can he face her, after letting that happen to her. Hearing her screaming, and trying to fight them off and the worst part of all -hearing them laugh.

Earlier in the night he saw what happened to Sixo. The singing of “Seven-O” woke him up. Thinking that this night it would remain safe to stay out of sight, Halle ran to his safe spot. Up in the rafters of the barn, where he had hidden many times before. He started dozing off, but woke at the sound of someone entering the barn. By the time he maneuvered to be able to see who it was, the door was shut, and the darkness returned. A few minutes went by and he heard the sounds of more people entering the barn. Just as he was about to warn whoever was hiding below him, the nephews burst in. Holding a lantern that illuminated their ugly features, they walked in and find Sethe. “NO” he screams, but only in his head. After what they had done to Sixo, descending from the rafters to confront them would mean certain death.

For the second time that night he watched a member of his closest family being tortured right before his eyes. Many times he was so close to going down. Never mind dying, just make sure to inflict as much pain as he possibly could on those white devils. But then he thought of Sethe and three (almost four) children. If he were to die, who would protect them? Who would help Sethe escape, and get her (and the) baby to safely to freedom?

He listens to her crying, and is afraid to cry himself. How could he let her know that he was here the entire time, and have done nothing to stop them. He began whispering over and over, “I’m sorry Sethe, I’m so sorry.” Her screams in his head continued. Nothing could stop them. Sleep was impossible, food seemed revolting, his whisperings turned into rants and then shouting at imagined foes. His descent into madness had begun and there was no turning back…

Project 2 Part 2

For Part 2 of the project i made a word cloud that represented the entire story. I did the entire story because the words that most come up would be a good representation of what the story would be about and who would it go around. The word cloud shows that Sethe is what the story is focused on and it will mostly go around what is happening in her life and all the choices that she makes. The word cloud also tells us which characters are also important and can find what kind of relationship they have with Sethe and the story they have with her. As readers get to read the book and know what meanings such as “baby” and “Beloved” mean they can see the importance they have in the book.

Ooooh Baby Suggs!

The second part of the project I have chosen to express and demonstrate the scene in a form of a poem with an expressive picture in its background.

The scene I talked about in part one is when Baby Suggs got her freedom and moved to Cincinnati. Halle worked hard even weekends to make enough money to free his mother. I personally find this act very touching and heartbreaking. Selfishness stops behaving at some point when we deal with some categories of people such as family.

The poem is told in first person, using Halle’s voice. The poem expresses the value of the mother and the joy she deserves. It is mentioned that Baby Suggs welcomed the travelers, it is meant here by whom who followed her later on to Cincinnati and join her in her house. The path Baby Suggs has taken and her move to Cincinnati was also described in the poem as I said “Days felt long, terrifying, full of struggle and horror ~Not anymore! Mother, now, you can live in peace and in one piece and feel as a survivor no more.” It is noticeable that this wasn’t easy to happen and wasn’t a walk in a park.

“The side where we can have some sense of humor.” the side cross the river is the place where Baby Suggs has moved. It is obvious that people have no sense of humor being slaves but this was generated and reborn again in their lives after their freedom.

The picture in the background shows two mature women whom are represented as Baby Suggs and Sethe surrounded by Sethe’s kids in their new home in Cincinnati.

 

Project # 2 – Part 2 – Draft

 

Sethe's Hand

I have created a concrete poetry image with the scene that I have chosen for part one, which was Sethe killing her child. I chose the shape of a hand with the words wrapped around it. The text around the hand is the text from the scene. The hand represents Sethe’s hand. After the horsemen came to claim her and her children to take back to Sweet Home, she believed the only way to save them was to kill them all.  Sethe did not want her children to die as slaves, at the hands of another. She wanted them to die from her hands, while they were still free. In choosing this shape for the text, I believe it shows the significance of Sethe’s hands in the story, which was used to kill her child.

PROJECT #2 / PART 2

Beloved Haiku

I may have been beat.
But my duty still remains.
I must provide milk.

What I decide to do for project 2 part 2 is a haiku inserted in a picture of a milk bottle. Now what exactly is a haiku? A haiku is a poem that consists  5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second, and 5 on the last. This all adds up to 17 syllables.

The pivotal scene I chose for Part 1 of this project was the scene where Sethe was beaten down and had her milk stolen. This scene brought about many events in the story. Without those events, the story would have played differently.

As we know, Sethe developed sort of an obsession to provide her children with her breast milk. When she developed her own milk, all she could think about was giving what she couldn’t have as a child. However at one point of the story, Sethe was attacked by schoolteacher’s nephews and had her milk sucked right out of her (I may have been beat). Although this left a stain in her mind, she still wanted to give. It was her duty (But my duty still remains) and obsession to nurse her children (I must provide milk) Throughout the story we see this obsession and we see that she wanted to be the best mother she could.

For the haiku, I had to think pretty hard on how I wanted to write it. You’re limited to what you can write and there’s a set format you have to follow. I wanted to portray Sethe’s image as a dedicated mother while bringing up the milk robbing incident. As a result, I came up with what you see. To add a bit more creativity, I decided to use a simple image of a milk bottle (It was hard to pick one) and simply edit the haiku text inside it. The milk bottle (which can be seen as a bottle of cow milk) represents in which I believe is the way she was treated. Like most slaves, Sethe was treated poorly and it seemed like she was treated more as a cow than a human. Like a cow who has no control of who takes her milk, Sethe had no control in this situation.

The image is the imaginary chokecherry tree on Sethe’s back which is the scar left on her back from being whipped by the schoolteacher and his nephews after her milk had been robbed.  It is part of my pivotal scene essay and it is also mentioned throughout the book the white girl Amy Denver who helped Sethe to deliver Denver on her way of escape and Sethe when she told Paul D about being whipped while she was pregnant just before her escape.

Amy said, “It is a tree, Lu. A chokecherry tree. See, here’s the trunk-it’s red and split wide open, full of sap, and this here’s the parting for the branches. You got mighty lot of branches. Leaves, too, look like, then darn if these ain’t blossoms. Tiny little cherry blossoms just as white. Your back got a whole tree on it. In bloom. What God have in mind, I wonder.” (93)

Sethe said, “That is what she called it. I’ve never seen it and never will. But that is what she said it looked like. A chokecherry tree. Trunk, branches, and even leaves. Tiny little chokecherry leaves. But that was eighteen years ago. Could have cherries too now for all I know.” (18).
