View From My Window: Critique

Throughout the whole process of this project, I can’t say it was that easy to do. I would say this project was not only a way for students to see what’s coming along the way, but also to see exactly how long and how hard you have to work to have a final piece of work that comes out to your satisfaction. Part one didn’t matter too much, but when the inking and paper came along, it really puts your precision and handling to the test, since the task was to refine your work as best as you can. If I were to have any regrets, it would be how my final product for the paper piece came out. Regardless of if I took my time, it came out rather rough and inaccurate. I would guess if I had used an actual exacto knife, it would have came out better, but I still think the blade I used would have replicated my actions on the exacto knife as well. The inking part I did twice, since the first time I did not really grasp the understanding of stable and ambiguity. on my second attempt, I took more time to review with my classmates and professor to get a better idea what I could have done better. Overall, the first inked project took me around one hour, while the refined one took me about two. I’m sure if I were to go back to the paper piece, it would take me another hour to refine it, making it from the initial three hours, to four. overall, this project took me about six hours and twenty minutes to complete as a whole. I’m sure for my next project, ill start taking more examples from the classwork and applying the same effort to my work as well, regardless of how long it might take to do so.

This is my final product that came upon completing the project. I wouldn’t call it the neatest, but I still think it shows that I made quite an effort to do it and complete it in the time it took me, which was three hours. When I was cutting out the black paper, I didn’t use an exacto knife, since I did not have one at the time, luckily I had a sharp blade I was able to use to get the job done, and judging by the look of the final piece, I still have a lot to learn about using a blade to cut clean lines, which in my opinion was the hardest part. I had scissors to help make it look more smoother, but it didn’t help too much. If given the chance, I would go back and do it again, if time was not such a restraint.

Glossary Entry: Converge

Converge: Verb

Definition: To move toward one point and join together : to come together and meet.

Source form http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/converge

I think I can encountered this word when I want to meet my friend at some where. I also knew this word from my science class. For example, “Everything that rises must converge.” by – Flannery O’Connor

Now I am understand this word from the passage, Even from age of Renaissance people can even express them self with art and illustration, they can see the meeting point of our view to the vanishing point of the deeper meaning of the art. Its a comparison of the distance and how much we understand.

Glossary Entry #1: Distort

Distort (Verb) : to twist awry or out of shape; make crooked or deformed

source of definition: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/distort?s=t

I encountered this word on Wednesday presentation of “Ways of seeing”, as the guide was talking about how we as people view art in different perspectives, weather its because of the color and mood it gives us, or the unique use of  normal or distorted shapes used to make up the image. When he uses the word distort, he talks about it upon the perspective of the painting that was viewed to us. He asks what do these distorted shapes make us feel, or how we view the picture and the message it gives off to the viewer.

Example of Distort:

Project #1 Final

Being a new student in college can have its own unique affect on people. You have to get used the new schedule, adjust to the culture of the school, and probably get lost fifteen to twenty times trying to find your way to math class. Now that I’m eighteen I have to establish a sense of independence. I have to learn how to be serious about my work while at the same time having fun and meeting new people along the way. When I become more comfortable with people around me, I begin to show more enthusiasm. Some may even say I seem cheerful or joyous all the time. I gradually become more outgoing and bold in an environment that I am familiar with. After a number of years, I have found that I have an interest in the field of graphic design. When ever I see a billboard advertisement or a commercial for an upcoming video game, I begin to gaze in awe wondering how something like this can look so realistic. From this I can conclude that my design aesthetic is the concept of graphic effects. Therefore, between five to ten years from now I imagine myself in this field of work.

In order to find an avatar, I had to brainstorm and think about what I wanted my profile to represent. I didn’t want people to assume that my profile conveyed something else other than what it was meant for. However, I wanted it to be unique and humorous. In order to do this I set up a list of photos that could potentially be the new avatar. My first choice was to post a simple a “selfie” of myself to use in my profile. I soon realized that there was nothing unique about this. Nobody would be able to infer or understand the kind of person I am, simply because there is no deeper meaning. After switching through multiple avatars, I found one that I thought would represent my profile in the correct way. The avatar displays a picture of Kermit the frog sipping on a cup of tea. This has been a trending photo on social media for the past few months. It represents the well known phrase ” But that’s not my business though” and is used in order to expose issues that people either see, or face at times. It has become a symbol that was created for the purpose of comedy on Facebook, Instagram and more. This avatar represents me because it shows that I enjoy having fun, making jokes, and love express it through media. It symbolizes the joyous side of my personality.

Based on my own avatar, I can infer that there are numerous interpretations that individuals may have. One example of a misinterpretation is that I am a major fan of Walt Disney’s  “The Muppets”. Just by viewing the photo at first glance, they may assume that Kermit the Frog is one my favorite characters out of the group. Another misinterpretation is that I may have just uploaded the photo as a place holder because I could not think of anything else to fill the void. Individuals who may not normally keep up with social media may not fully grasp the meaning of the avatar or what it stands for. Therefore, they will not know how it represents me.

The concept that my profile will convey is very significant. Overall, it conveys that I have an amusing personality. I have my comedic moments that generally are shown when I am comfortable with a group of people. When I think back on the significance of my profile ,it causes me to think about the popular line, ” Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” due to the fact that people will make curtain assumptions about you based on the first thing they see on the profile. When this occurs, they will begin to categorize  you in a different way. In a worst case scenario they me even become skeptical towards you. However, once they understand the deeper meaning of what they view, they will then begin to see the profile from a whole new perspective.

As one can see, the way an individual views an avatar can open up a whole discussion on the concept of interpretations and the message being conveyed. Whatever the profile conveys is important. However, despite what people may think, if it is something that represents your personality, it should remain exactly the same.

View From My Window: Research

From my window I had seen the three streetlights surrounding my block. From my viewpoint it almost looked to be at a 30/60/90 degree angle. I noticed how much rectangles and triangles played a huge part in the construction of my neighborhood’s houses. I looked at how my neighbor’s fences consisted of skinny rectangles and slightly bigger ones combined with triangles. I noticed the rectangular windows and triangular rooftops. The only time I saw a street sign that wasn’t rectangular, it was the diamond-shaped back of a sign on my block.

I looked at the giant tree on the opposite side of my block that is twice as big as the house it is covering from my view. I looked beyond my block and saw the little pointy top of the local church from two blocks down. The cars that traveled all the way down the block reminded me of playing with toy cars as a child, and the black and white color scheme of them helped this mental image.
