City Limits: Reflection

In the reading of Colson Whitehead’s “City Limits” we learned how our own view of New York could be completely different to somebody else. We have all lived in New York for a long time. We have had all kinds of experiences. Everyone has seen different places of New York and has experienced different events. This helps build to someone’s New York. In the second paragraph he talks about how people begin to build their own New York. He tells us that our New York is based on our experiences and we shouldn’t let other people tell us what our New York should be like. He tells us to not believe in things like the newspaper and history text books because if we haven’t experienced it, its not part of our New York. Reading this made you feel nostalgic because you really begin to think about those past stores that aren’t there anymore. He gives the buildings human characteristics by saying that, both us and the buildings never get a chance to say goodbye. He starts talking about how our homes will always hold memories of us and it’ll have all our different phases.

Toward the end he begins to talk about how as New Yorkers we’ll always experience change. He also says” that New York doesn’t complain when we change so we shouldn’t”. We can’t stop the changes so we might as well embrace it. According to Colson Whitehead the only thing we can do is remember the memories we had of the buildings because that is the proof that they existed.

At Home Aural Topographies: Research

I decided to do the variety sketch first. It starts off kinda slow but you can feel the suspense, but then ”BAM” it picks up with any warning. You hear a bunch of loud sounds. From the drummer in the back to the guitar player in front. It repeats for a while loud and crazy but then it stops and goes soothing. You hear this very sharp pitch at some point. It sounded like screeching and then some yelling. Overall the song goes from slow to chaotic very fast but it just kept going and it got louder. Lastly it just stops toward the end.

The monotone song I used was a song actually called The Monotone Song (lol). The song starts out with nice beat with the drums. It then mixes it some techno like sounds. It picks up after you hear the cymbals being played. It doesn’t have any rests, it just flows continuously. Towards the end you stop hearing the drums and and only listen to the techno part. It ends with a tap on the cymbals.

Field Trip Reflection

Our field trip to the Center for Book Arts was very interesting and fun! It was a good way to learn about print making. It started out with us just looking around finding interesting pieces of art. Then this guy started talking to us about print making and book binding. It sounded like he was giving a lecture. He told us the history of everything and how it turned into what it is today. I saw how tedious it can be to print something.  Also I learned if you made a mistake when your printing it was very hard to undo it. Now it takes just a press on the keyboard to undo something. Overall the zine exhibit was very interesting. I found this nice magazine about your relationships with the train lines. It was so funny. Then there was this piece about president Bush. Then there was this spinning head mannequin lady. It looked so beautiful, you could literally tell that the person spent a lot of time making it.  After the Center of Book Arts we went to the Rubin Museum. We were looking at the Francesco Clemente exhibit. It was very different from the Center of Book Arts. It was quieter and cleaner. It felt more professional. At the exhibit I liked the piece called The Four Counters. It’s a picture of a hand reaching out of water with stars at the background. Also the hand had the drawings of the world map on it. The countries weren’t  placed right because everything was scaled and placed wrong. Francesco Clemente brought together Eastern and Western traditions in his pieces. I really liked the two field trips, I hope we have many more.

Project 1: Reflection

Project 1 is about a bio of myself. It’s mostly about me being a student and what I’m trying to become. I started out stating my interests and how it ties into me being a designer. By doing this project I learned how to organize my essay. My writing tends go all around the place. By writing it out first and having a draft my ideas were able to flow better. Also posting it an then having people comment on them also helped. It helped me choose which ideas were relevant to my bio. What I think I could improve the most on is my vocabulary. I didn’t spend a lot of time on this project. I wish I did. I know my time management skills need a lot of work. I spent most of my time thinking about what would be in the project. I’m hoping for future projects I can put more time into them and have a great outcome. I also hope that everyone would continue to leave comments on how I could improve my work. Thank you :)

View From My Window: Assessment/Critique

Yes project 1 was fun but it was very tedious, but that is art. It took a lot of time using the ruler to make the outlines of each box. This alone probably took 2 hours. Then we has to draw the pictures and pick which fit the criteria of stable and ambiguous. This took about an hour to do. Lastly we cut and paste each picture in to each box. This was about half an hour. At the end a beautiful piece of art was born. Art requires the long hours and tedious work for it to be produced. In class, we critiqued each other. This helped relay information on how to improve our work. When my work was critiqued, I felt accomplished, but it gave me ideas on how I could have made it better .  A lot of my peers liked my work but still it could have been better. I liked a lot of people’s work. I gave a lot of ideas which I think were good. Some were hard to understand which were ambiguous and which were stable. Most people economized, this made it easier to tell which was stable and ambiguous. It was a great critique, though it was very quiet in the beginning. Everyone did a good job. I hope we continue to work well together. :)

In all it took about 3 and a half hours to finish.

Ways of Seeing:Project 1

Hello my name is Moeen Razak. I am 18 years old and I attend New York City College of Technology or City Tech for short. I’m studying to be a designer. I’ve always been a designer but now I’m refining my skills.  Since I was small, I’ve always loved watching anime, playing video games, and reading manga. They have helped me be who I am today. They helped fuel my passion for design. I’ve always wondered, why did it end like this, or couldn’t they have made it look like this? I’ve always wanted to make a my very own video game or create my very own cartoon show. One where I could create my own world. It would have all the different ideas I have. It would be an RPG game, since that is my favorite genre. RPG stands for role playing game. It is where you are the character and the story goes on through your decisions. I also have an interest in ancient mythology. I love the ancient stories of heroes and dragons and the different gods. They kinda tie into my love of anime and manga. The only difference is mythology involves culture and history. I find the different cultures of ancient times really fascinating. As you can see I’m a lover of fiction. You practically do anything when talking about fiction. I want to make video games with the many ideas I have.

The picture I chose as my avatar is from an anime I watched about Japanese culture. The picture is about a boy who delves deeper into a world about ancient demons and gods. The picture has some ancient writing and a ancient wolf demon who serves as the boy’s protector. This represents my love of mythology and culture. It also has nice vibrant colors, which represent my artistic nature.

Why did I choose this picture. Many people might be thinking that right now. It can be misinterpreted in many ways. For instance many people can think that this is a random picture off the web that I thought looked cool. Others might say it’s just a cartoon picture. Most people wouldn’t take the time to understand how the picture would represent the person posting it. People might just think that I love anime.

When people see my profile, I want them to see who I am and what I do. They shouldn’t just think I’m a guy who watches tv all day and goes out when he feels like it. People should see I’m a designer. A person who has many ideas and is willing to share them. They should be able to see how much time is put into doing what I like and feel my passion. I believe art is like giving life. When you make something you are creating new life. You are bringing something into world and giving it meaning. Many people can look at art, but few people can actually see its meaning. With this I’m hoping people will see the life I am making.
