Encounter:
I encountered the word when I reading the article “Patients Prescribed Narcotic Painkillers Use More of Them for Longer, Study Finds” on the New York Times. “Other aspects of the report mirrored previous research on opioid painkillers. Their use is more prevalent among women and the elderly.” prevalent is another one of those words I recognize but the actual definition was not clear to me therefore I looked it up it had three different definitions, and in this context it had meant widespread.

Encounter:
I encountered this word when I reading the article “Uber’s Background Checks for Drivers Come Under Scrutiny” on the New York Times. Scrutiny is a word that’s around I see it and I have the jist of what it means but I did not know the definition with precision, so I looked it up. This clarified the word for me quite a bit, this article was talking about investigating their investigations on people cause that is essentially what a background check is.

Encounter:
I was reading this article “Congressional Leaders Reach Deal on Spending” on New York Times. “For instance, the bill would nullify the District of Columbia’s referendum to legalize marijuana, but it would allow Washington to decriminalize the drug, meaning possession of small amounts would no longer be punished.” In the sentence, I have made predictions of what the word means, since it has to do with laws and trying to pass it but that is still not enough for me to know the actual meaning of the word. After looking up the word I now understand referendum means a popular vote of something and in this case it has to deal with marijuana.

Encounter:
I was reading an article on the New York Times about C.I.A. torture reports, their faults and brutality of it and I came across this word as I was reading the article, not knowing what it meant I searched it up on Webster and I did not know that the C.I.A. was doing such gruesome torture to people and violating their bodies you can most likely guess what it was about from the definition of the word so I’d rather not say.

Encounter:
I was reading an article on the New York Times article on Obama extending the U.S. role on the Afghan combat  “The allies are expected to follow the American lead in consolidating and withdrawing their troops.” I had no idea what it meant, but now I understand that the allies meant to join their armies together into a whole and start retreating from Afghanistan. Instead of having ground wars they mean to use drones instead.

Aural Topographies : Research

The piece of music I listened to was called [Paper Planes by Virtual Riot]

The song begins with slowly and quietly the image of it moves like a sine wave, the sound is very smooth. After the initial part, the song introduces a couple piano keys and a electronic static sound. The speeds increase until the minor drop in the bass, then a variety of shapes explode they feel like geometric shapes, where the sharp angles should be its replaced with curvature and this pattern echos. This song gives up a very electrical vibe infused with both parts staccato and legato and frequently alternates. Near the center voices are mixed in, however words aren’t spoken they are sounds, this gives off a haunting or chilling vibe but this allows also a calming relaxing feeling. At this point the lines slow back down to a wave motion. Then the first part of the song repeats with slight differences. The volume fluctuates throughout the song to illustrate a shift.

When I visualize this song, I can see a range of many colors such a shades of yellows, blues, purples. The sounds flow linearly in a slow sine wave motion then eventually shifts to jagged wave at high frequency and then lowers. This is where the colors of blue and purple phases in and out alternatively, while in the background the continuous beats are represented as circles pulsating. I feel as if the static noise is what unifies this both auditory and visually.

Introducing Myself

Hello, My name is Cheng Long Lin however I prefer just to be called Cheng. I was born in New York City but raised in Fuzhou, China until the age of five. I live in the east village which is in lower Manhattan an area with a lot of night life, many food places, and entertainment. Also City Tech is relatively close to my house, it only takes me 15 minutes to arrive to Jay St on the F train which helps since I have morning classes and I’m not a morning person. There are really only four things I like the most Video games, Sports, Anime/Manga, Music. I’m am a junkie for these things, when I get into anything related to any of these subjects I won’t stop. I’ve invested a lot of my time playing video games such as Dota, League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Archeage, Counter strike, etc etc… one of my favorite video game series is Final Fantasy I’ve played almost every one. Even though I play a lot of video games I do play a lot of sports as well. I was Anchor for my high school PSAL fencing team, ran track and field, and I also like to play basketball and handball. For Anime or Manga you name it I’ve seen, read, or heard about it. A few of my favorites are Full Metal Alchemist, Spice & Wolf, Code Geass. As for what kind of music I listen to, I just listen to many different kinds almost every genera, however recently I’ve been listening to a lot of EDM.

The reason why I chose to enroll in Art & Advertising Design was that I had no idea what I wanted to do but I liked Art and was good at it, I made it on the Chancellor’s Honor Roll. So I thought that would be a start. I really liked painting it feels to me that its the most free form of art and is unrestricted. Although I primarily like to paint I’ve also worked with different mediums as well such as Charcoal, Linoleum Cut, Conte Crayon. I don’t know what I will be doing in five to ten years but I believe it will be something that alows me to have freedom to work in a fashion I enjoy to allow me to be creative.

My avatar is a digitally edited photograph of a pair of Converses tied to a tree. As for the reason why I chose it, well I just really liked it. The vibrant greens and the shades of white that makes look blurry almost like a waking dream. Another reason why I chose this avatar is that it reminds me of my days is North Carolina, nice and peaceful sitting under trees. Well as for what this avatar should show people is that I like artistic alterations to photographs, it’s dreamlike, and its vague.

My profile is to give people a peak of who I am, it shows people what I’m interested in and what I enjoy doing. Creating a profile might have been an important step to opening myself up to other people, since people are always so kept towards themselves now a days.
