New journey,Better mentality

There are countless roads and paths to take to get to our destination, what matters when you get to point A to point B is the journey to get there. Alot of people are always pre-occupied and focused on the final point that they forget to enjoy what is right in front of them and miss the beauty of the out side world away from their perspective. the spirit around them, the experience to get to the final destination is the important thing that passes by everyone. I use to take the same route to city tech by rushing and try to get to my class as fast as possible because i was trying to control time by rushing passed me time would always be one step ahead of me, and controlling me instead. At the time i was in a very bad mental state because i would continuously become overwhelmed on how much it took to get from one point to the next instead of enjoy it.

that is when I was determined and understood the point of this project, it changed my mentality for the better, how I take a more fulfilling path every time i walk to my classes. The course I took would always be me running to the subway beside construction, pass the court and always worrying  that i am going to be late because I am in that mentality it usually ends up being true. my new route started with me not checking the time every 5 seconds and decided to let go and enjoy myself and the walk and once i finally reached jay street metro-tech subway station i decided to just wander at any direction and enjoy the view for what i have in front of me. If i don’t enjoy the journey there is no point of doing it and it has to come from personal experience. I was listening to my favorite music genre vaporwave that always seemed to calm me down while I felt overwelmed. during my walks I also decided to hear and enjoy every note of a song I did not know was there before  and that is because ive always been too pre-occupied with the journey. I walked through cadman plaza park passed city tech, checked if i still had time for class and I realized it was still early. I was pleasantly surprised that i had more time to enjoy and saw that everything is here for a reason and that is the beauty of the walk, nothing is going to get you and you’ll be able to take a breather and follow natures lead, you have to pace yourself if you wanted to get to your destination. the trees where right for the season, the space was open and free, the sound of the wind blowing and knowing where i am was breath taking. i walked around the park back to city tech and made it to my class, in a better mood, on time and had more energy then i did before. It improved my mentality in ways that i didn’t believe was possible. It was a good refresher and exactly what i needed.

I have found 2 outside sources that show that sometimes a good walk out of a line out of work give you a better perspective of the world and how it helps to let go of that object that you are always fixated on trying to get to. one is labeled “How Walking in Nature Changes the Brain”  By Gretchen Reynolds and in this article it explains how walks can help with anxiety, Depression and other mental illnesses because we spend too much indoors then outdoors, and how it can almost feel like a cage, to let go and go out is the beauty of having these wandering walks.  it can help make people find there way again, and figure out why they are doing what they are doing, its good thinking time when you take the walks according to Mr.Bratman “ we strongly suggest that getting out into natural environments could be an easy and almost immediate way to improve moods for city dwellers” in the article. So knowing that the other article explains all that we need to improve our lives very easily because of the time we spent wandering wherever we please.

Walking meditation By

Everyone is always chasing after something, many people don’t understand what they are looking for is right in there face, but that’s the way its suppose to be, no one ever knows what the next moment is, that’s what is so captivating about nature because things are suppose to be that way for a reason. people just have to take they’re time to figure out what they are chasing, what i figured out what im chasing is love.

Revision of project 4, courthouse approach

When you wake up, knowing that you have school, what gives you the drive to actually get up? Or maybe you don’t have that drive and your conscience seems to play mind games on you and your forced to go. Well whether you believe it or not, on our way to school there’s always something that could suddenly take place, something you see or something you could do to better your day. Maybe it’s choosing a route with a fetching view of vibrant leaves, sunny skies which might juxtapose the same energetic feelings to you on your way to your destination. The route that you take can also be silent, and you’re able to capture locations that held sentimental feelings, and valued parts of your new york. Not only that but it might be a not so appealing route that leads you to your favorite bacon egg & cheese and arizona that you’ve been craving for. And don’t be surprised if it’s just your favorite hip/ r&b, reggae, jazz, or funk music that converts your whole mood because that’s possible as well.In my opinion, your mood will only change due to your interest and what’s significant to you, which is why I feel my route that passes by the Eastern District of New York (by cadman plaza) serves as a good example.
My typical traveling routine is to take the 3 and 4 train and get off at Borough Hall train station. I would then walk alongside Adam street, on to Brooklyn Blvd and enter in on adam street. When taking that route I wasn’t too content seeing the christopher columbus statue due to the fact that I don’t view him as a heroic figure. And even when I couldn’t see him, I was constantly reminded that I was walking through the columbus park which did not bring forth the best attitude in me. And let’s not mention the homeless people near columbus park. Whenever I pass by, I feel obligated to compensate them, and with my large appetite that’s never the best selfish choice on my end. Also when traveling to school by my regular routine, I’m always dissatisfied with the crowd by the food stand on Adam street. What destroy my day the most is not being able to buy a single donut because of the lengthy line and fearing to blend in with loud middle school kids nearby. However for this project, I took a slightly different approach. Instead of walking down adam street, when I exit the train station I walked vertically towards the courthouse on cadman Plaza, a very special part of my new york.. And at that moment where I was reminded that the more knowledge I acquire, the more opportunities will be open for me. Not only that, but i’ll be reminded that my voice can now be heard. Im happily heading down tillary street now, with tears of joy rolling down my cheeks. I will now reach for my headphones and iphone and listen to some hip hop or rap music to release myself out of that sentimental mood before entering the assigned room in 300 jay street.
My mom as well as myself had recently became citizens. Even though I wasn’t the one who took the test, I was extremely glad to know that I lend a helping hand by studying with her and using my prior knowledge to explain certain things to her. Walking by the courthouse gives me a sense of purpose. It gives me the motivation to not only get to school, but to go in ready and willing to acquire all that would be taught. When walking this route, I completely forget about the christopher columbus statue that I saw a few minutes ago. I seem to capture a image of the Henry Ward Beecher statue (that I would have passed just before heading towards the cadman plaza). My mind begins to wander as I think about how henry who was not only an abolitionist but a supporter of women’s suffrage ( the right to vote) help to get many of us where we are today. You could imagine the warm hearted mood I must be in at this point. Just to know that me and my mom had recently received our citizenship, also means that we will now be able to exercise our right and know that Henry Beecher’s support wasn’t in vein. As for other people who were born in the United states and had already had these opportunities open to you, this walk could be beneficial to you as well. For example, Just like Henry Beecher you could support or go against certain political decisions in hopes of truly bettering the lives of all people equally. Not only that but you might be able to witness newly citizens and see that you must not take your opportunities for granted because many people like myself had always wish for these opportunities.
Some might say that my persuading argument is a little too personal and one sided, in the sense that the courthouse holds a lot of different meetings, and might bring forth a lot of melancholy feelings for other individuals who might have been in trouble with the law. Well even though their not entirely wrong, the courthouse can still be seen as an inspiring area because it gives you a sense of what not do. If you are someone or know of people who had a different interaction with court houses then it can be seen as an example to you. According to the article “ Take a trip down memory lane- memories are good for your health” if it weren’t already obvious, passing by memories is in fact a positive thing. The article states that when people “dwell wistfully on their past” they “ become more optimistic” and “inspired about the future”.. This simply means that whatever you have dealt with in the past can change you for the better in the future. This statement is related to traveling the courthouse route even if u might have had negative interactions with it in the past, because it will make much more prepared for future encounters. Think about if you or your loved ones were abused or harmed in any way, the courthouse may the final destination where you get justice. Therefore courthouses might not be such a negative vibe.. Travelling by Eastern District of New York by Cadman Plaza might not be such a bad option after all. For others who may think it’s unecessary to take new routes you are sadly mistaken. According to the article “Why you should visit a new route”, “It essentially puts you — neurally — in the same position as when you were a child,”. This in which supports the fact that you might feel stressed out on your way to school, but walking a new route or different area re -opens your “kid abilities” and permits you to see things from a more creative view.
While some memories are meant to be just that, it can be very significant to travel a route from your pass or area that will motivate you. For most of us, on a way to school might be a very nagging, time of our day. Therefore to release yourself out of such stressful mood, it’s best to walk a route that gives you your favorite “ food, coffee, or just a place that puts u in a calm sentimental mood, for example eastern district courthouse, you will be sure to have a better day.

New Route to School

When making the trip to and from school, I usually go with the route that gets me from the train station to the school building as quickly as possible. The fast route however, is somewhat stressful. When you take into consideration the clusters of people, the constant chatter, the sound of honking cars, and an oddly overwhelming need to walk as quickly as those around you, you’ll soon realize how this short five minute walk can lead to increased levels of stress and a lack of focus in the classroom. I happen to be an anxious person, so having to deal with a hectic speed walking crowd every morning isn’t exactly desirable. My heart starts pounding, my palms start sweating, and my mind begins to race. Anxiety is the feeling of excessive worry – something I experience daily as a result. When I’m walking with that large group in Jay Street, my anxiety causes me to focus on every sound and move that is being made around me which muddles my mind quite a bit. Though the walk only lasts about 5 minutes or so, the anxiety doesn’t end immediately after the walk. I then have to take an elevator that may or may not be crowded because they’re generally faster than taking the stairs, and I don’t do well with crowds.

I found a new route that – though very time consuming compared to my established route – is leagues ahead of my current route in how relaxing it can be. This new route takes me through Columbus Park which has a very wide walkway where people can sit on benches on either side and simply relax, which is a heavy influence for how I feel while I walk through that park. But unless it’s lunchtime the park is empty and I can stroll through without a care in the world. This route allows me to enter on Adam’s street which grants me access to the Atrium building which then allows me to access the stairs that is seldom used. And considering the fact that I’d only be taking this route if I have time to spare, I wouldn’t have to rush up any stairs on my way to class.

Being left with a jumbled mind after taking my usual route leads to a state of disarray in my notebooks and the quality of notes that I take. The Attention Restoration Theory (ART) – introduced by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan (professors of psychology at the University of Michigan) – states that being in nature or nature-based environments increases cognitive function. This boost in cognitive ability – especially in the case of early morning classes can be the difference between a pass or a fail on an exam. Not only does nature increase mental output, but it can also act as a form of stress relief. So for students who have early morning exams, a walk through nature is not only aesthetically pleasing, but is beneficial in terms of performance.

A study done by Henk Staats and Terry Hartig (professors of psychology at Leiden University and Uppsala University, respectively) found that a walk through nature left subjects who had been mentally fatigued with a considerably positive outlook. Interestingly enough however, those who weren’t mentally fatigued at the start of the nature walk didn’t experience much of a change (for better or for worse) by the end of it. This only feeds into the idea that taking a walk through nature when stressed is more beneficial than when in any other state of mind.

While taking a quiet, relaxing walk through nature may seem to be something you’d do unaccompanied, there is evidence to suggest that nature walks with a group can be even more beneficial – and for longer periods of time. A study done by the University of Michigan and Edge Hill University in England found that walking in groups resulted in less depressive moods. The professors who conducted this experiment recommend taking short but frequent walks through nature to really see benefits. When on the subject of how forming a habit of walking through nature affected those in the study, lead author Sara Warber said this:

“After 13 weeks, those who walked at least once a week experienced positive emotions and less stress”

Warber and her co-authors recommend walking through nature at least 3 times a week. They also agreed that by taking short but frequent walks not only will people notice a decline in their stress levels, but they will also have an increase in overall positive emotions.

The benefits of nature are based on empirical evidence that can be vetted and verified by any and everyone. Nature can benefit more than just students with its ability to brighten moods and bring forth mental clarity, which is something that everyone could and should make use of.

Being centered with nature

Living in New York people grasp certain habits and often lose sight of the setting around them as if they’re wearing blinders. People often focus on how fast to get where they’re going and not the experience of the journey. Either tapped into their devices or their conversations, they never stop to think about the beauty around them. Without realizing that they are often shutting off the outside world and not enjoying it as much as they can would allow people to understand the things that tourist, whom they seem to get frustrated with, are seeing. Downtown Brooklyn has a lot of views that gives each person a different feel of everywhere in New York. It has the busy shopping center and the quiet neighborhoods along with traffic for those trying to get into Manhattan. New York City College of Technology also known as City Tech is a college located downtown which has many different ways to reach that location. I live on Flatbush which runs very long through Brooklyn itself but there are about three different routes I could take to reach City Tech and they involve taking the bus B41. Of the three routes, the route that is the most important is nature because it can shift a person’s view to getting into the work mode. Nature sends a calming effect to a person experiencing it; without even knowing it, nature can shift a person’s mood from a cranky or tired feeling to a calm feeling, which is why the path of walking through Columbus Park is the best route when walking to City Tech.

The path is about two to three minutes longer than the fastest route. Taking this path would mean that while on the B41 instead of coming off at the last stop which is Tillary Street and Cadman Plaza a person would come off two stops before which is Court street and Joralemon street and enter the park area by making a right after exiting the bus and then a left to the entrance of the park, where at the front they would walk past the Citi bikes on their left. The things a person would see while walking through the park will just bring a person into a calming mood. When you first enter the park there are benches on either side of the walkway and behind those benches are plant plots.  The person would continue walking and they would see the Borough Hall building and in front of those buildings are tables and foldable chairs for people to sit at. The further they walk in, right in front of all the tables and chair they would see the water fountain plot with a section for plants right around it. Past the water fountain, they would keep walking and they would see the walkway gets broader and adjacent to the right of the water fountain is the Borough Hall train station. As they are passing the train station on their far right they would see trees as they curve inwards to the park along the sides of the Supreme Court and on their far left, there are more trees as they curve inwards to the park alongside the street. Separating the trees from being directly in front of them is another walkway along the sides of the Supreme Court. As they continue to walk through the broad middle path, there are plants and flowers plots on either side of them and three historic monuments placed in some of the plant plots. In the mornings the park is usually empty with a few people sitting on the benches and others commuting by foot to reach their destination. In the afternoon the park is more active along with a food market that takes place Tuesday’s and Thursday’s near the train station up to the water fountain. After walking through the park they would make a right and walk down an inclined plane, cross Adam street and make a left to enter City Tech’s doors on their right. While walking they’ll get the feeling of relaxation as if in that moment there is nothing wrong going on in life. Although this route is longer than going straight to the school it is a much more enjoyable experience. The importance of spending a little bit more time just to enjoy your walk is something that can change the way a person views their day as it goes on.

The other routes included walking in directions that had a lot of foot traffic and would be crowded such as Jay Street. Or the path focused on getting straight to the school and a person wouldn’t be able to truly enjoy the beauty around them, instead they’ll be trying to avoid getting in people’s way and weaving through so their path is just as clear. The natural route is more significant than the others because it gives them a time to themselves where they can enjoy the things they see but can also enjoy some alone time instead of rushing and paying attention to everything happening in front of them. It gives them a shift to feeling centered which would help to shift their mood during whichever time of day into a working environment.

In one of the articles from the Huffington Post, online newspaper researchers discussed the benefits of walking and how it may contribute as a “nonpharmacological approach to serious conditions such as depression”. This article outlines the positive effects of walking and how it can affect a person’s mood by decreasing it especially those who have been through trauma. It also links out to another article which had taken a poll about the effects of walking and how much it benefits a person’s well being. Another article from the New York Times discussed how walking can allow people to stop having the tendency of brooding where they think about all the problems wrong in our lives. This gives a different aspect on how to look at life, as people we sit and think about all the things wrong in life while taking a walk and enjoying nature may give you the benefits to see positives as a whole.

All three articles explained the positives of walking and how it may dwindle depression and can stop a person from brooding. Walking is beneficial and something done every day, to change the experience of your walk to better your mood is useful. Not going for a walk to be annoyed and frustrated by the people in front of you but to enjoy the open space and setting around you.  Experiencing nature is a decision that should be made even if it’s more time-consuming. The benefits a person can get from the experience will change a person’s view and priority. It is beneficial because it can help cure the body in a physical and mental way. Many people do not know the benefits of walking which is why it is overlooked. Walking in the city is not the same as taking a walk through nature because walking in the city has people being frustrated with the fact that they cannot get to where they need to be. The best places to experience nature genuinely is through a park or an area where it isn’t closed off by a bunch of buildings but more of an open space where you can get in touch with nature. Therefore, a walk through Columbus Park on your way to City Tech is one of the best routes to take when you’re shifting into a working environment.

beautiful Route

My most beautiful route during the holiday season  the detour i decide to take is  on of where i would get off the 5 train at Nevins before my regular stop of borough hall.As i get off and walk  the platform  to the stairs and come up and i walk towards the Fulton Mall as I  walk across the street and I pass by all the restaurants along the Fulton Mall as i come to one of the famous restaurant ‘s  downtown  Juniors restaurant It smells so good i love walking pass it . As I continue my walk pass the Fulton mall I pass by the retail stores they are so pretty at this time of the year the holiday season decorations which i really love seeing is very pretty in each one of the retail front windows.I also love seeing the decorations along the outside also its so pretty to me i love seeing the people shopping going from store to store enjoying the holiday shopping .Their are so many people at this time of the day around 12;00 in the afternoon  their still so many people  shopping and enjoying the sites of the decorations in the windows of the stores , children enjoying the time looking at the Christmas trees and all of the holiday decorations tourists taking pictures of all the fun sites and everything that’s going on around them.  As i walk pass the store windows i stop and take a look at the decorations and how they make me feel it gives me such a warm feeling to know that the holiday season is here  and this is on e of the time of the year that i really enjoy seeing the people shopping and the beautiful decorations on display. This detour is a little longer than i would expect because i stop and look at all the decorations they have on display in the store windows as i walk through the Fulton mall to get to city tech its such a beautiful area to be at this time .I enjoy this route its much more beautiful at this time of the year than mu normal walk would be.

More decorations more people just a lot more for me to see this detour is about a 10 to 12 minute walk to school where my usual walk is about 5 to 7 minutes walk from borough hall train station . What does the holiday decoration do to us during the holiday season?does it affect us where we want to go out and spend money because of all the sells they have going on during this time. I feel that not only does the sells influence us to come into the stores but the holiday decorations does also. And i think that is  the point of the decorations to get people to come into their store and buy things because of the holiday’s As you are taking your walk  through the Fulton Mall area the decorations  in all the retail stores  tend to draw you in even if you don’t want too i think that the holiday decorations affect your mood . The mood that the holiday decorations put me into is  of a positive one because i want to go into the store because i see all the pretty decorations and all the sells going on during this time of the year the smell of the holiday fragrances  the Santa clause inviting you to take pictures with him.”According to sally Augustine of the huff post can holiday decor affect us she states that the sorts of red, green and blues which are popular during  Christmas and Hanukkah they tend to boost a person energy level during this time.

So with that being said the holiday decorations can affect your mood well it affects mine in a positive way that’s what i like so much about my walk along the Fulton mall the Christmas lights the decorations the Christmas trees, the store front decorations along outside it allows me to get in the holiday spirit and. those are some of the reason why i like taking this detour just seeing the  people more happy and more festive during the holiday season. I think that the holiday season tends to bring people more closer together  during this time of the year  people coming from all around just to celebrate with their families that’s what the holiday season  reminds me of . I think that what i also like about the holiday season is the smell of chest nuts the smell of hot cocoa the smell of the real Christmas tree the funny Christmas sweaters. according to Sally Augustine “we find holiday smell most calming . Even though  the holiday smell are good  but the overall decorations is what i like to look at along Fulton mall area   very calming to me. The holiday  season decorations is something i enjoy seeing along my route  so by detouring and taking  this route  is more beautiful  than taking the shortest route  to city tech. The feeling of the  holiday decorations  while you are shopping  or just walking by  should be of a positive one during the holiday season where i think most people are in a positive mood.” According to kids health ,org’ preparing for the holidays can help you to learn  about yourself it also can affect your actions  and your mood during the holiday it can have a negative and a positive affect  but more likely to be a positive during the holidays Holiday decorations can put  you in a positive mood  i enjoy this route because of so many things during the holidays not only the decorations but the smells the people just everything about the holiday season.

The detour of the College student

Brooklyn in The morning can be hectic. On the way to school or work or even maybe back home you’ll never find peace and quiet in the main routes. You’ll usually encounter cranky rude disgusting people because its morning everyone hates the mornings people wish they could be back in bed sleeping. Getting breakfast now thats even more crazy the lines are ridiculous stores even your local food cart has a line so don’t expect to be getting to your destination on time if you plan on getting your important meal of the day. But their are simple easy ways to avoid these big crowds and getting to your destination without the mayhem and maybe grabbing something quick to eat.

One day I decided to take another route because I wasn’t feeling it that day. I started off my day regular I showered and walked to Main Street which is where I get onto the 7 daily. I luckily made it onto a 7 express train there is only a limited amount of trains that ride on the express line per morning if your not lucky you have to take the local 7 bound train. In the 7 train there usually is never a seat super packed and moody rude people I can see why though mornings suck to be honest. Once I’m on the 7 train I usually play music and sound out my surroundings and just focus on the stops. Depending on what train I make it on I get fewer stops on the F train or I get stuck taking more stops on the F train I usually pick up the F train from 5 ave if I’m a express bound train if I miss the express bound train I get the F train from 74th street because I don’t have the time to take the 7 local bound train all the way to manhattan. Its usually a mess getting the F train from 74th street everyone just pushy its a huge crowd trying to get down one escalator its just so annoying and I don’t feel like dealing with that. Once I’m on the F train I get out at jay-street and metro tech I didn’t feel like dealing with the crowd this day I barely got to sleep and I just wanted to get to point B and back to Point A. On this day I decided to go towards Jay street & Willoughby street yeah it was hectic still but ehh whatever at least I’ll be out the crowd soon enough once I hit the corner I turned left and walked down Willoughby street. Walking down I noticed pizzeria that sold $1 slices and delis and hair salons I really didn’t think city type areas would have delis. Once I reach the cornered I turned left and made my way up towards Lawerence street when I hit Lawerence street It felt like a street that was out of a movie road made out bricks It felt like I was in a movie. so I continued making my way up eventually I came across Myrtle ave there it really felt like I was in one of those college movies where the character chills out to grab food and eat on my left was chipotle which is always busy on the right was 5 guys which is busy depending on the time you go and in the middle of those two restaurant brands was a cart selling something I forgot to be honest. I walked up more I noticed the red circular table which you usually find dirty with the chairs not dirty for once the alligator statue on the ground which looked dope and then as I walked more I noticed the benches and beach chairs where empty for once you finally have a place to sit the pigeons chilling walking around in there horde and the tree which the leaves where falling off of it looked peaceful and was hectic as my usual route where I would have to dodge and weave my way through the crowd. Once I hit Johnson st I turn left and on the other side of the street I could see the new city tech building being constructed it has came a long way since august I noticed. Then I finally hit jay street back into the horde but hey all I have to do is cross the street and there I was so I didn’t mind.

There are many ways to make your morning walks less stressful and even in the horde of people. One way is finding a detour route you may never know what you find or can see out there. Another way is listening to music according to the according to 8 tips reduce Commuter Anxiety by therapist Marlynn Wei music is ways to relaxes you and let you clear your mind and space out but it depends on your music choices listening to angry music will get your heart rate to rise while calm music will keep you chilled out. She also stated that rage and anger isn’t going to make the train faster and that is true being angry doesn’t help instead all your doing is wasting your time while the train and Mta may be a pain anger won’t do anything but get you into problems just chill out and listen to music and don’t pay mind to anything next thing you’ll know is your train already there.

Pleasures of the Outside

Finding the alternate route to school that would maximize the walking experience sounds easy to find. What is the focus of the walk? history? beauty? it all depends on the person’s personality and taste. I believe walking and admiring nature would help maximize the walking experience to school. Diane Ackerman wrote an article called “Are We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?”, here she gives her perspective on technology and how it affects our experience with nature. “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” (author not listed) stated the importance of experiencing nature. The author mentions in his article that taking a walk improves your mood and increase your ability to do better on tests. Other than focusing on time, we need to pay attention to our surroundings. I believe nature plays a large role in creating a great experience when choosing an alternate route to school. Technology has blinded us from viewing something so beautiful such as nature, a detour would provide the individual with some relaxation time and hopefully in the long run improvements academically.

In the morning, I have one goal; arrive to class on time. I believe my goal is similar to every students in any school. I recommend taking an extra 10 minutes to finding a place where you can make a detour to enjoy some time alone to admire the scenery around you. Connecting with nature is very difficult especially in an urban area such as Brooklyn. Taking an extra 10 minutes in the morning to enjoy a simple walk could benefit the individual with peace and relaxation. Columbus Park and the Korean War Veterans plaza are the few places around City Tech where I can enjoy some aspect of nature. When arriving from the number 5 train from the Brooklyn Borough Hall station, you are able to see the Supreme Court building. Then you would have to walking straight through Columbus Park and enjoy the scenery. During this time of year I am able to see the trees change color from the bright green to an orange and yellow color. The colors of autumn. I am also able to see the animals such as birds and squirrels. Seeing how the animals move around peacefully in the little nature that they call home is very engaging. I believe this route integrates the aspect of nature with your morning walks to create a peaceful and delightful walk to school.

Diane Ackerman wrote an article called, “Are We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?” In this article, the author express her point of views towards technology and how it is affecting our perspective of nature. Ackerman is not opposed to technology, she is just concerned with the effects that technology has towards our viewers of nature. She states “… we’re spending less time alone with our thoughts, and even less relating to other animals and nature.” She believe a possible solution would be spending a few moments a day paying close attention to nature. I believe the morning detour to school would provide the element of nature that the individual should experience. Other than using technology to separate us from nature, we should use technology to maximize our experience with nature. We use our smartphones to connect with our friends and family, we could do the same by connecting ourselves with nature.

In the article  “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” (author not listed) from the Telegraph-Journal, mentions a study which was published in the Journal of Affective Disorder. The study states “[walking through nature] improves our mood and make us capable of better performance on a memory test.”  A simple walk through a park, having a moment to ourselves to reflects on our academic skills for school could improve our memory. Other than improving memory, a simple walk could help the person suffering from depression. The article also mentions how living in the urban areas is especially hard to experience nature. “There is a considerable negative effect on you as vehicle exhaust, horn blowing and the roar of traffic introduce air and sound pollution” Living in an urban environment has its sacrifice. During the morning walk to school I recommend listening to your favorite artist or any genre that relaxes you. This would improve your walking experience and lets you have that moment alone and get that relaxation you are thriving for.

Both articles, “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” by unknown, and “We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?” by Diane Ackerman stress the importance of experiencing nature. Technology has taken away our ability to think and experience something so peaceful such as nature. Taking some time to go in a little walk to experience nature would only be beneficial. Not only are you improving your physical health by walking a couple of extra blocks to school but you also improving your mental health. Taking a simple walk through the park, experiencing nature would decrease depression and also improve your ability to do better on a memory test.

This article also supported morning walks. However, this article focused primarily on the health benefits of morning walks. The first point I enjoyed and used for my essay is that morning walks help our heart. A healthy heart is important to live a long life so we should definitely try different methods to better our health. This will help support my topic sentence of including a relaxing morning walk in our lives.

This article had a positive attitude towards change. When we think of change we think its out of our control however, this article showed us we do have control well sometimes. For example, we can plan on how we are going to carry out this change. The way we carry out this plan will allow us to better cope with change. This is related to my project because i bring out the claim changing our route to school may be hard to do at first. However, this article showed that when it’s a change we can control we should definitely plan it so we are comfortable.

4. http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/manage-stress.aspx

This article was very informative because it talked about the importance of coping with stress. In addition, the article included different ways to cope with stress. For example, the article mentions to step away from the stressor. As college students college stresses us and to some maybe even the view of college intimidates them. However, this article mentioned how important it is to strep away temporarily from it. We step away not because we are avoiding the problem but because stepping away can help us come up with a better solution. This will support my statement that my detour will help relax city-tech walkers.
