Alienating, amenity

Alienate (Verb): To make differences or hostile

“While HotBlack is not the first cafe to withhold Wi-Fi from the public, industry experts said such shops are in the minority and risk alienating customers” Christopher Mele

I’m sure I’ve never heard the word before so I couldn’t take an educated guess on the meaning. I took the word to the website and search for the definition and realize that alienating mean to make differences or hostile. “experts said such shops are in the minority and risk making differences to customers.”

Amenity (noun): an agreeable way or manner.

“It’s not quite an essential amenity or legally required to open, but it’s nice. It makes customers happy, and make your space feel more like their space” Christopher Mele

To summary amenity, it can be described as a way of saying not necessary. It is not necessary for the coffee shop to provided hotspot for the customers.

Sociability

: the quality or state of being sociable; also : the act or an instance of being sociable

I also found this word in the same article we’re using for our final, when I read the sentence in which the word was contained in I understood what the word meant but just to be very clear of its context I looked up the word.

Din

noun
noun: din; plural noun: dins
  1. 1.
a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise.
“the fans made an awful din”

I found this word today during our class when we received our Article for the final coming up. I didn’t notice the word at first until I re- read the article again and saw it and got confused by its meaning until I looked it up

Immersion

Immersion(noun): absorbing involvement

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/immersion

” Coffee Shops Skip Wi-Fi to Encourage Customers to Actually Talk” Christopher Mele

” He said he did not see his approach as revolutionary but as a response to society’s deep immersion into all things digital”

When reading this article, I just used the context clues at first to understand the meaning of being involved in the digital things when dealing with society. When finding out the meaning of the word, I realized that although I could have figured the meaning using context clues it still was valuable to find out the actual meaning of the word because it provided a better understanding.

Threshold

Threshold (noun):  the place or point of entering or beginning

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/threshold

“The way we live now” Colson Whitehead

“You didn’t know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbye.”

I have encountered this word many times before and when I see this word I just think of holding to a certain extent, in the sense of ” this is beyond the threshold” but then in this sense, you get to see that the word meant entrance in reference to the idea that you would no longer see this place again. Getting to understand the different context of the word helps to understand the word and sentence in a better sense.

Solitude

Solitude (noun):  the quality or state of being alone or remote from society

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/solitude

” Walk with me” David L. Ulin

“The air was thin, the darkness brittle. I was alone. The solitude felt crushing as if I had driven off the edge of the known world. ”

I have encountered this word many times but never really paid attention to it, because there was always a way that I could overlook the word. In the way, the sentence used the word it made more sense to describe the feeling of being alone which is why I decided to incorporate the sentence before that to give a better understanding of being alone. Now the sentence makes a lot more sense although you could use context clues you get a way better understanding of the term.

Consumerism

consumerism(noun): the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable; also: a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/consumerism

“The happiest and saddest place in New York, According to Twitter” Brian Merchant

“Times Square is the gleeful buzzing monument to American consumerism”

When I first encountered the word I knew that consumerism had something to do with money. when searching for this word I came to the understanding of the definition, I then realized the reason why they call “Times Square” a monument of consumerism because this is where the majority of funding occurs.
