Commission

Commission: (Noun) an authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts.

“Design world legends Lorraine Wild, Louise Sandhaus, and Rick Valicenti recently formed the trans-continental partnership Wild LuV, which is allowing them to work together and tackle big commissions that draw on all of their talents (https://www.wildluv.com/)”

While I was reading the essay by Ellen Lupton “Why Collaborate” I happened to stumble upon the word “commission”. While I was reading the sentence the word was placed in, i was at a lost because i couldn’t make any sense out of it. The reason i couldn’t fully understand the sentence was because I thought the word “commission” meant a fee or a form of payment. So I decided to look up the word to see if my definition of the word was right. Upon looking it up I found that my definition wasn’t all that wrong seeing as it was one of the many definitions of the word; but in this context it meant something different. So as i read the definitions i found one that fits the context. In this context the sentence meant the group Wild LuV are able to tackle commands that forced them to do and act in a manner they didn’t wish to. It also crossed my mind that it might also portray Wild LuV tackling commissions of others.

Pragmatic

I first encountered the word pragmatic while doing psychology homework. It was inside of a question and in order for me to answer the question I would need to understand the word. Before looking up the actual definition I looked for synonyms so I could get a general understanding of the word by finding a word that I do know that is connected to pragmatic. I saw words such as “practical”, “logical”, “realistic”, etc. After looking at the synonyms I understood that it was a way of doing things with common sense or the logical way of doing things in a certain situation. An example would be , ” Imagine you applied for a job, but instead of offering the job you wanted, they offered you a lower position.” The pragmatic decision would be to accept the job with the mindset of it’s better than nothing and you might get promoted or transferred to the job you really want instead of not taking the job at all.

superannuated

Superannuated: (adjective), incapacitated or disqualified for active duty by advanced age

“Now that the small field beyond the orchard had been set aside for barley, it was rumored that a corner of the large pasture was to be fenced off and turned into a grazing-ground for superannuated animals.” (George Orwell’s Animal Farm)

I was helping my brother with his homework and stumbled across this word that I hadn’t known either. I was confused because I couldn’t exactly figure out the definition from the surrounding text. But I figured the words roots were something along the lines of “super” and “annual” meaning old. After the definition I now know that a corner of the pasture was going to be turned into a grazing field for old animals that can no longer serve the farm in any meaningful way, because of their old age.
