Summary of “City Limits”

In the article “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead It was mostly about his experiences in New York city and how it operates. He gives attention as to why New York is known as the city that never sleeps. He gives his first impressions on his encounters in New York city which I believe is the point of the Article. In the article he states that New York never remains the same it is constantly changing. He then continues on about the history behind NY it’s surroundings, buildings and people. This is the place of opportunities where you can make your dream a possibility.

Diatribe

Diatribe (Noun) : a bitter and abusive speech or piece of writing.

I was confronted with this word while reading McGrath Charles. “A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport.”

“Will Self’s new novel, “The Book of Dave” (Bloomsbury USA), is about a London cabdriver who inadvertently founds a religion when a ranting diatribe he buries in the garden of his ex-wife is dug up five centuries later, in a now post-apocalyptic world, and becomes a sacred text.”

This was the first time i encountered this word so i didn’t know the meaning at all. When I looked up the word i found three definitions however they weren’t that alike. So i substituted the definitions into the context the word was included in. I also used the examples “The article is a diatribe against mainstream media.” and “a bitter diatribe about how unfair the tax system is” to demonstrate the word and found “A bitter and abusive speech or piece of writing” to be the more accurate definition of the word.

Criterion for New York Monuments

Monuments have been erected for over a century in honor of someone, a group or an event. Many respectful and influential individuals have had monuments built to honor them for their beliefs, progress they’ve made fighting to solve a controversial issue but they are also others whose monuments are controversial in today’s day and age. Some monuments that have sparked debatable topics as of late are the confederate monuments of confederate generals like Robert E Lee and abolitionist and orator Henry Ward Beecher. Confederate monuments are being removed around the country under pressure from those who say they honor a regime that enslaved African-Americans. The pace has increased, however, in the wake of the deadly confrontation at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. These figures were known for their valiant efforts but they also committed disgraceful acts and represent hate and oppression. This is the reason why there is such a huge controversy on whether these monuments should remain or be taken down and destroyed. But to remove or keep a monument some criteria must be taken into account. These criteria will determine whether to remove a monument or take elsewhere. It should be taken into consideration the back-story of the person or event the monument is erected to celebrate or commemorate the surrounding influence, and the economic standpoint of the monument.

A monument shouldn’t be taken down because its illustration have been taken out of context or have been misinterpreted. An example is the Henry Ward Beecher monument in Brooklyn. Henry was an individual who was known for supporting the abolition of slavery. However his monument portrays an African-American woman kneeling at his feet to lay Palm fronds before him. This proved troublesome seeing as some who might not know of Henry and still some who do regards this as a message of white supremacy. Knowing this it would be beneficial to add a plaque next to the monument giving some info on the individual and what the monument portrays. This would provide some insight on the statue to those that doesn’t know about the monument, which would give no confusion and cause to removing the monument. Living in New York, I know how hard it is to move around, especially with tourists. Tourists go around New York City looking for these monuments, trying to understand our history. Other that dislikes these monuments stand in the way of the tourists trying to take photos, to get that perfect shot so they can remember the day they visited that monument.

If a Monument have an equal standing on whether it should be removed and destroyed or remain then it should be taken into account of any alternatives. One of such is the monument being taken elsewhere to a less populated environment or private property. The monument could be taken to a museum where those that appreciate, support and uphold the monument can visit it without any disturbances and the others that are offended by the monument are also satisfied with it being away from the public eye. Some monuments have been supporting there communities with the wide range of tourists they attract. This is an important fact in determining whether a mother should remain but with slight modification or be removed altogether. If the economic value of the monument is too great then the monument should remain with some adjustments made to smooth the disagreeing party that doesn’t support the monument. Everyone is different and entitled to their own opinion and views. This is why there is always a disagreement; we can’t change others beliefs, opinions and religion developing so much conflict.

In conclusion, these criteria will ensure a fair exhibit of monuments in New York. This criterion will see to it that there will be an equivalent representation of opinions and beliefs. I trust these criterion because it will allow many New Yorker’s and others around the country to be tolerant of the many options that exist. If any other criteria could be used to ensure a non bias judgment it I believe these criterion cover it. History has taught us that when bias types of criteria are utilized, violence is always used by the objecting party. We don’t need any more violence especially after the many violent actions that have risen since this argument began. We need peace; however we don’t want to ignore an old reoccurring problem such as ignorance. This criterion covers the most important thing, the safety in a community while determining the outcome of a monument. I trust if Bill de Blasio uses my criterion the populous of the state of New York and will benefit tremendously.

Criteria that should be taken into consideration on whether to remove a monument

Project 2: Part 3

When determining if a Monument deserves to remain or be disposed of you must take into consideration of these points.

1) Does the monument have a positive influence?

2) Does the monument offend people of another race, culture or religion?

3) Is the monument still relevant at this moment?

4)The effect the monument will have upon being taken down?

5)The whereabouts of the monument, where it can be taken?

6)The history (Backstory) of the monument?

Summation of “Why collaborate?”

In the article “Why Collaborate” by Ellen Lupton she sheds some light on why she likes and dislikes working together. She went into detail about the positive and negative outcomes of working together. Ellen liked to work with a team that had their own defined roles and skill sets. She stated “It can be frustrating when a few people a doing the heavy lifting”. Ellen doesn’t mind working with a group however each member should be able to cooperate and all add the same value of work to the project. Ellen went on that more can be achieved by working with a group that by working by yourselves. She talks about how outside of forced group work and school, many groups of people have voluntarily worked together to do amazing things.  In school students create social networks that can last a life time and are a source of artistic inspiration. Ellen stated that “Successful collaborations are like democracy writ small”. Collaborations are resourceful, fun and can be productive depending on the peers participating with you.

Commission

Commission: (Noun) an authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts.

“Design world legends Lorraine Wild, Louise Sandhaus, and Rick Valicenti recently formed the trans-continental partnership Wild LuV, which is allowing them to work together and tackle big commissions that draw on all of their talents (https://www.wildluv.com/)”

While I was reading the essay by Ellen Lupton “Why Collaborate” I happened to stumble upon the word “commission”. While I was reading the sentence the word was placed in, i was at a lost because i couldn’t make any sense out of it. The reason i couldn’t fully understand the sentence was because I thought the word “commission” meant a fee or a form of payment. So I decided to look up the word to see if my definition of the word was right. Upon looking it up I found that my definition wasn’t all that wrong seeing as it was one of the many definitions of the word; but in this context it meant something different. So as i read the definitions i found one that fits the context. In this context the sentence meant the group Wild LuV are able to tackle commands that forced them to do and act in a manner they didn’t wish to. It also crossed my mind that it might also portray Wild LuV tackling commissions of others.

Reflection for Project 2

I believe project two will be exciting for me mainly because ill get to learn about the backstory of many of the monuments. I of course know the backstory of the popular monuments but i’m interested in learning about the ones that doesn’t really stand out. It will also help me to decide whether it’s right to move or destroy some monuments like people have been lately. I also look forward to getting to know and working with my fellow classmates.

The embodiment of Shemar Stephens

Hello everyone, my name is Shemar Stephens and I am on me second semester at New York City College of Technology. I went to and graduated from Harry .S. Truman High school. My grades were average throughout my entire high school life and I mostly kept to myself to stay out of trouble. I live in the Bronx and have been since I came to New York about 7 years ago. I am currently majoring in (CST) Computer System Technology and am looking forward to what I’m able to accomplish here.  I’m always up to learning something new but rarely have anything piqued my interest like technology have. It was when I was given my first tablet that my interest into technology began, I realized how useful this little machine is and how much fun it was using it. Luckily my Mother realized that I was fond of technology and tried to surround myself with it, although she herself had trouble using some of the things she bought.

I come from a family of four containing my Mother, an older brother, my Father and myself. My mother and my father got divorced when I was at the age of five. Ever since then I’ve been living with my Mother. My brother no longer lives with us so it’s only her and I. This is why I want to graduate college and make my mother proud. I live a block away from the two train that I take to get to school. I enjoy playing video games, messing around with computers or any piece of technology for that matter and going out with close friends to the park or to just walk around and enjoy the day.

As for my avatar which is a drawn version of a Bull. I chose it because is portrays stability, strength, stamina, provision, confidence, helpfulness and determination. I’d like to think of myself as someone who’s confident in his decisions and has the stamina to do what’s he’s determined to do. Once I set my sights on a goal I will focus on completing it and overcome any adversary that attempts to stop me.

The bull could also symbolize other things as it is usually related, in its solar sense, to the masculine, strength, the sun, and kingly power. The Horns are seen as the sun-bow, shooting its ray-arrows and is a God to a great many ancient cultures. The constellation of the bull (Taurus) is in such a position as to welcome the sun’s motion during the vernal equinox. Meaning, the constellation of Taurus corresponds to the motions of the spring in western astrology (May 14 to June 19). This also produces symbolism of abundance, replenishment and subsidy as spring is a time when the earth experiences her renewal.

I am a person who’s dedicated, slightly stubborn, and helpful. I’ve been through hard times but as I look forward they are many more hard times to come. I will face them upfront and overcome them because that’s who I am. This is why I find my avatar to be a perfect representation of myself. As I complete my degree at City Tech I believe this interpretation of me will help to push me forward. As I’m sure it will be difficult to do, my experiences at City Tech will help to mold me into a respected and successful individual that will make my mother proud.

Terminology

Terminology: (Noun) The technical or special terms used in a business, art, science, or special subject.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/terminology

“Throughout the semester, we will place a great deal of importance on defining words, both terminology that will help us describe, analyze, and discuss our reading and writing, and vocabulary that will help us better understand the material we encounter.”

When i first encountered the word Terminology on the glossary project outline paper sheet i didn’t fully knew the meaning of the word. To try to get a better understanding of the expression i tried to break it into syllables. I broke The word into three “Term”, “in” and “ology”. I knew the denotation for “term” was “a word or phase used to describe a thing or to express a concept”. So using the definition of “term” i figured out the word “Terminology” was a word or phrase used to describe a thing or to reveal a concept. Knowing that wasn’t the correct definition i looked up the word. after doing so i got the true definition above. Knowing the proper definition i realized that throughout the semester a great deal of importance will be place on defining a body of words used with a particular technical application in a subject of study, business or art to help us better understand the material we encounter.
