Pleasures of the Outside

Finding the alternate route to school that would maximize the walking experience sounds easy to find. What is the focus of the walk? history? beauty? it all depends on the person’s personality and taste. I believe walking and admiring nature would help maximize the walking experience to school. Diane Ackerman wrote an article called “Are We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?”, here she gives her perspective on technology and how it affects our experience with nature. “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” (author not listed) stated the importance of experiencing nature. The author mentions in his article that taking a walk improves your mood and increase your ability to do better on tests. Other than focusing on time, we need to pay attention to our surroundings. I believe nature plays a large role in creating a great experience when choosing an alternate route to school. Technology has blinded us from viewing something so beautiful such as nature, a detour would provide the individual with some relaxation time and hopefully in the long run improvements academically.

In the morning, I have one goal; arrive to class on time. I believe my goal is similar to every students in any school. I recommend taking an extra 10 minutes to finding a place where you can make a detour to enjoy some time alone to admire the scenery around you. Connecting with nature is very difficult especially in an urban area such as Brooklyn. Taking an extra 10 minutes in the morning to enjoy a simple walk could benefit the individual with peace and relaxation. Columbus Park and the Korean War Veterans plaza are the few places around City Tech where I can enjoy some aspect of nature. When arriving from the number 5 train from the Brooklyn Borough Hall station, you are able to see the Supreme Court building. Then you would have to walking straight through Columbus Park and enjoy the scenery. During this time of year I am able to see the trees change color from the bright green to an orange and yellow color. The colors of autumn. I am also able to see the animals such as birds and squirrels. Seeing how the animals move around peacefully in the little nature that they call home is very engaging. I believe this route integrates the aspect of nature with your morning walks to create a peaceful and delightful walk to school.

Diane Ackerman wrote an article called, “Are We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?” In this article, the author express her point of views towards technology and how it is affecting our perspective of nature. Ackerman is not opposed to technology, she is just concerned with the effects that technology has towards our viewers of nature. She states “… we’re spending less time alone with our thoughts, and even less relating to other animals and nature.” She believe a possible solution would be spending a few moments a day paying close attention to nature. I believe the morning detour to school would provide the element of nature that the individual should experience. Other than using technology to separate us from nature, we should use technology to maximize our experience with nature. We use our smartphones to connect with our friends and family, we could do the same by connecting ourselves with nature.

In the article  “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” (author not listed) from the Telegraph-Journal, mentions a study which was published in the Journal of Affective Disorder. The study states “[walking through nature] improves our mood and make us capable of better performance on a memory test.”  A simple walk through a park, having a moment to ourselves to reflects on our academic skills for school could improve our memory. Other than improving memory, a simple walk could help the person suffering from depression. The article also mentions how living in the urban areas is especially hard to experience nature. “There is a considerable negative effect on you as vehicle exhaust, horn blowing and the roar of traffic introduce air and sound pollution” Living in an urban environment has its sacrifice. During the morning walk to school I recommend listening to your favorite artist or any genre that relaxes you. This would improve your walking experience and lets you have that moment alone and get that relaxation you are thriving for.

Both articles, “Age, Grace, and the art of walking outside” by unknown, and “We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?” by Diane Ackerman stress the importance of experiencing nature. Technology has taken away our ability to think and experience something so peaceful such as nature. Taking some time to go in a little walk to experience nature would only be beneficial. Not only are you improving your physical health by walking a couple of extra blocks to school but you also improving your mental health. Taking a simple walk through the park, experiencing nature would decrease depression and also improve your ability to do better on a memory test.

Technology and Society (draft)

Imagine yourself getting off the train at Jay and Metrotech. Once you get off the trains there are many exits but you must take the easiest exit which is Jay street and Wilghony street. You take the elevator up and make a left and walk down that street. You will see a couple of buildings like the Credit Union, a sunglasses store and across from you will pass the NYU building and Starbucks. As you keep walking down you will come across Kings County Family Court. You continue to walk straight but now you are crossing the street. Now you are on the campus of City Tech and across the street you will find City Tech’s new building under construction. Both of these buildings belong to City Tech however both of them are very different when it comes to their exterior. This is a clear representation of juxtaposition, which can be defined as, the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect. These two buildings have the same purpose to educate but their design is so different. The modern look of the new building is a representation as how our society is evolving with technology.

The building across the street is very modern. The exterior itself is all glass which gives it a very modern taste. A glass building gives a reputation of being sophisticated which is the contrary to the building we are in now. The building we are in has a old design but not antique. Many educational buildings have smart boards but our school has chalkboards. The truth is before I came to City Tech the last time I had a chalkboard when I was in 6 grade. Our hallways are also kinda bland they lack that modern touch the building across the street has. Getting to this location was not very long but very hectic because Jay street is very busy in general. The area that has most traffic is usually outside the train station because everyone is rushing to get to work.

I decided to chose these building because I really like to see the huge difference of buildings in New York. I like to see the change of designs architects apply to our buildings nowadays. These new buildings really help us see the change in the world we live because we have modernized. The new design of buildings help testify how much as a nation we have industrialized and how we continue to grow. The buildings that are yet to be remodeled help us see how our New York was before. These buildings have history and culture tied within them so they still have relevant value. In the reading “City Limits” written by Colson Whitehead helps support my statement multiple times. On page 3 paragraph 2 we read that Whitehead also witnessed change in his neighborhood. On the same page but 1 paragraph, Whitehead goes on to further state that he was close to the buildings but to those who an business in them. He states, “if you had known, perhaps you would have stepped behind the counter and shaken everyone’s hand, pulled out the disposable camera and insured posing instructions”. A final supportive part of the passage can be found on page 3 paragraph 3 Whitehead states that he wished his part buildings could piece his life together to show his evolution as a person.

Personally, I have mixed feeling about juxtaposition because of the effects it brings to many neighborhoods. Many neighborhoods are made by immigrants and they integrate their culture within them allowing this mixture of culture make them feel closer to home. However, this modernization takes away with this sense of home. Although, this is a downfall, our neighborhoods are becoming a more representation as a society. This is a perk because as a nation we seem more industrialized and wealthy. Unfortunately, to achieve this representation many of our beloved neighborhoods have to be sacrificed. In conclusion, juxtaposition has a beauty to it but it overshadowed other beauties within our home.

Project #1

To introduce myself I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Technology. Since young I had a robust passion for computers, I would always tinker with my old PC which was considered a relic to all the other ones out at the time. Since then I wanted to learn more on how computers work both hardware and software. I have a very strict mindset when it comes to school and social life. Basically, I feel free to do whatever I want if I have good report card at the end of each semester. I’m not like everybody else who has that set goal in life. I do look forward on becoming an IT Specialist for a high-end tech company such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc.  You could call that a goal if you want, I see it more as a plan.  One of many plans I have for myself, another plan I have is to maintain a GP of 3.5 or higher. If I’m really motivated this semester I know it’s something I can achieve. I also plan on taking summer classes next year so that I can reach the achievement of an early graduation. Thus, taking me a step closer to living a rich and opulent lifestyle in the “Golden State”, also known as California.

Enough about my academic life and onward to the communal aspect of my life. I live in a full house which consists of 3 brothers and both my male and female progenitors. Living in Mill Basin has its pros and cons. I live near many buses so public transportation isn’t a hindrance. But I feel as if I’m far from everything. I have strong passion for music as well with some of my favorite rappers being A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Max B, Don Q, and many more the list can go on. I also enjoy listening to old 80’s rock and soul music, only when I’m with my dad though. I live a simple life but I aspire to become something great in the future and It all starts here at the New York City College of Technology.

In my profile picture, there’s several high-end tech companies that are well known throughout the world. My intention is to get my degree in computer technology and work for one of these companies. I know I must work hard in college to complete this quest especially if I want to be a computer technician for a brand like Apple. I feel as if Apple doesn’t want to hire just any computer nerd, they want people willing to make change to the world, same goes for the other companies.

Some people may get a false idea and think that these are the only tech companies that I would want to work for in the future. There are over 100’s of tech companies I would like to take my experiences to after I graduate college, some not even in the U.S. I just want to expand my horizons and make the world more technologically advanced.

I hope that after reading this you will gain a better understanding of who I am as a person and what I intend on becoming in the distant future. Overall, I am an easy person to get along with and I’ve been told countless times that I’m good at keeping conversations interesting. Throughout my years of college, I hope to meet tons of good people that can benefit me in the long run. I wish to just enjoy myself and have fun all the while working hard and staying focused.
