The glossary assignment helped us, student, a lot. It has the benefit of learning new words and gaining credits for defining them. When we get confused because of the new words we encounter, we always choose to ignore it and continue reading further down even if we don’t understand the meaning of it and the whole sentence. When I was doing this project throughout the semester, I have the chance to learn new vocabularies. One thing I like about this is that it’s not due the next week or next next week in class, it’s due when the semester is over, which gives us enough time to learn all 15 new vocabularies. We have 2 choices; either we do it all at once or week by week which gives us more times. Another good thing about this is that we can see our fellow classmate’s vocabularies, so not only we can learn within ourselves’, we can always get new vocabularies from the others. Even though we have enough time for this assignment, but I also get lazy and forgot to do it sometimes. Overall, this assignment is a success, I learn new vocabularies and gain credits for it in the end. Although I cant remember all the definitions of the words but I can always come back and check it out.

Alienating, amenity

Alienate (Verb): To make differences or hostile

“While HotBlack is not the first cafe to withhold Wi-Fi from the public, industry experts said such shops are in the minority and risk alienating customers” Christopher Mele

I’m sure I’ve never heard the word before so I couldn’t take an educated guess on the meaning. I took the word to the website and search for the definition and realize that alienating mean to make differences or hostile. “experts said such shops are in the minority and risk making differences to customers.”

Amenity (noun): an agreeable way or manner.

“It’s not quite an essential amenity or legally required to open, but it’s nice. It makes customers happy, and make your space feel more like their space” Christopher Mele

To summary amenity, it can be described as a way of saying not necessary. It is not necessary for the coffee shop to provided hotspot for the customers.

aghast

Aghast (adjective): Struck with overwhelming shock or amazement; filled with sudden fright or horror.

“Customers initially were aghast at the decision” -Coffee Shops Skip Wifi Encouraging Customers to Actually Talk.

As I was reading the article about skipping wifi in the coffee shop, this word aghast blocked my way of continuing reading further down. I don’t know the word at all, but I have a feeling it means gasp, being surprised at something. The moment I search up for the word, the definition matched my guess.

Alter

Alter (verb): to make different in some particular, as size, style, course, or the like; modify

“But just how a visit to a park or other green space might alter mood has been unclear. Does experiencing nature actually change our brains in some way that affects our emotional health?” How walking in nature changes the brain by  GRETCHEN REYNOLDS

As I was reading this short paragraph, the word ALTER stopped me from reading further down. Alter sounds familiar but the spelling of it does not exist in my memories. Looking it up after trying to make a guess gives me a better understanding. I realized I’ve heard this word when my friends and I went to get their clothes altered. The reason why the word is familiar yet strange to me is that I’ve never bothered to look up for the spelling of it. “But just how a visit to a park or other green space might change the mood has been unclear.”

Restorative

Restorative (Adjective): capable of renewing health or strength

“In an analysis of research on how nature keeps us calm, Atlantic writer Adam Atler explains why being outside is like hitting the reset button on our brains. The key, he writes, is through a psychological process known as attention restoration theory:” “This is your brain on Nature” -Lindsey Holmes.

When I stopped at this word, I was a bit confused but also had a clear guess on what this word means. Just because in Restoration, the word Restore is in it, giving a hint to the readers. Since the passage is about how our brain can be affected by nature, the word restore is the best way to describe how nature connects to our brain.

Project 4 final.

In this city, people always seem so busy, whether it’s on a weekday or a weekend, and the question I have for them and I are; are we happy where we are right now? Or the moment we stepped out the house at 7 a.m in the morning? While I was rushing to school, I notice there are many adults with their briefcases, students with their backpacks. New York City is a beautiful city and we, the young one always ignored the beauty of it. Yes, the young one, because of we still in the early stage of our lives and we got caught up with responsibilities. People in their late stage of their life are the one who notices the changes and the beauty of this city. When we are in our ways to our destination, our moods either tired, fed up, sleepy or annoyed. There are ways to boost up our mood early in the morning, and depends on if you have extra time for it. A walk through a path filled with nature or peacefulness can help you relieve your stress and achieve your inner desire for calmness.

The route I take to get to my class is a common route that multiple people take. I’ve never notice any details as I rush to my class, the views from the first day became parts of my memories and I’ve never bother to go update or renew it. Weeks ago, I came up with the thoughts of walking the same route but at a slow pace. I stepped out the R train station, passed through the mall. When I looked in, I saw worker placing the food in its section. The steam from the food blurred out the windows and also my view. I walked the same path every day but never noticed the changes. Between the NYU building and the Chipotle, there’s a little road with light poles on each side. If you look carefully, you’ll notice the Christmas light decoration around the poles, waiting for night time to come for them to brighten up the street. Instead of making a turn towards Starbucks like I usually do, I walk straight to the other NYU building. There’s a little park on NYU’s campus when I was walking towards it, in the middle of the road stands a giant Christmas tree in the middle of the road. The Christmas tree is something that wasn’t there in the first place, the community put it up due to the upcoming Christmas season. When I enter the park, the leaves are resting on the ground, the trees are held bald, however, it does not ruin the peacefulness of this park. In the park, there are benches for passengers or students to relax. The views calm me down, brought peacefulness to my heart.

There are researchers proving that taking a walk in nature can affect your brain’s function the way of thinking. According to Gretchen Reynolds, the editor of “How walking in Nature changes the brain’ states that ‘A walk in the park may soothe the mind and, in process, change the workings of our brains in ways that improve our mental health, according to an interesting new study of the physical effects on the brain of visiting nature.” Walking in a green area helps the human body feel relieved, which revolves changing our way of thinking and since most of our generation spend their times outdoor dealing with stresses and anxiety, seeing the color green gives our brains a break and drop all of the stresses. Experiments are made to prove the hypothesis.

The color green define as safe and secure in our daily life, nature’s green can make us feel safe walking in that area. Lindsay Holmes, the author of ‘This is your brain on Nature’ said that “Research consistently finds that nature has a profound impact on the brain. A 2014 study found that participants who took group nature walks saw a host of mental-health benefits, including decreased depression and better moods.” Nature is like a medicine that heals us whenever we’re stressed or have the mental issue. It’s not just a saying, it’s being scientifically proven.

There are multiple routes to the school but R train takes fewer times and more efficient but most importantly is because of the path that I have to walk through every day. Every season the decorations around the area are changing but the feeling of nature surrounding me does not fade away. There are times that the commute can be the death of us in the morning due to delays, that’s why we need to choose the right route for us to relax without stopping our legs. Every route you take has their own unique surroundings and aroma, you just need to take your eyes off your phone so you can spot it.

I’ve never notice any details as I rush to my class, the views from the first day became parts of my memories and I’ve never bother to go update or renew it. There are multiple routes to the school but R train takes less times and more efficient. Our daily commute can be delayed which cause ruins our morning and that’s why choosing the right route can gives our mood a little twist. My daily route might seem common but it’s the little details that separate it from common to enjoyable.

Project 4 part 2

While you walk the route I choose, I want you to enjoy the view while you walk through it. As I walk pass the giant store once I got out of the train station, I love looking in, seeing the worker placing new fresh breakfast in the breakfast section. The steams from the food blurred the window but it did not block out the view in the inside. After walking pass the store, you’ll arrive at the road outside of NYU. No car, no honking, just you and the passengers next to you. You can be walking in the center of the little road or the side of it, but if you look carefully on the light polls, there are little decorations on it. Since its daylight, you probably wont notice or no one notice but those light lit up the road when nigh time falls. Christmas lights brighten up your way is such a romantic scene. Keep walking straight, there’s a little park between the stores and the second NYU building. Chairs, benches are located inside the park and also a mini play ground. Outside of the park, there’s a monument for guide dogs. The best season for a rest in the park is summer time. Sitting on the benches with your friends or yourself enjoying the summer breeze can be relaxing. Autumn season is a good season also, grab a cup of coffee from the nearest Starbucks, sit down at the park and read your favorite book. The route can be quiet and calm but also can be common and busy. This route are often the main route for people to get to class with, however the views make it very pleasant. The route has different views at night time, with all the Christmas light turn on. You’ll might be the only one walking through since night time fall, everyone return back to their house which brings peacefulness to it.

Project 4

The route I choose to go through everyday to get to school is a common route for everyone who lives in my area. Taking the D and then transfer to the R is the fastest way to get to class. On way walking to class, you’ll be able to see different styles of restaurant and fast food. You can also pass by NYU’s little park where people can sit there and relax. It’s a different view in the morning because students, business people are all rushing to get to their destination.
