Wrapping It Up

This glossary project was not hard to accomplish if I had finished it the right way. Instead because of all the projects and keeping up with other classes I had often forgotten about the glossary and I would see new words but thought it would take too long to make the post about them. Throughout the class itself, it was not hard to understand the most of the words by either using context clues or when we searched it up together as a class. Throughout the semester, finding and searching for new words not even for the glossary but for my own knowledge has allowed me to look at the words differently. In the sense of where the word originated from and what are some ways by focusing either on the prefix or suffix to figure out the word. It affected my reading process because usually, I would just glance over the words and not focus on figuring out the meaning behind the word itself, but instead either not to pay any mind to the word or just to use context clues whether wrong or right. One part throughout this project that was kind of hard was to not repeat words because originally I know that was the goal of the project although I tried very hard one of the words that I wrote down was a repeated word but that was because I had already had it written down. One thing I would have done differently would be to actually manage the project along with other assignments, for example, I could have done the summary and the same time that I was completing that I could have input some of the glossary words instead of doing them within the last few days. Although it was something that didn’t hold the center of my focus during the semester it did help with figuring out the definitions of unknown words better and understanding them in a different context as well.

Counterintuitive

Counterintuitive(adjective): contrary to what one would intuitively expect

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/counterintuitive

” Coffee Shop Skip Wi-Fi to Encourage Customers to Actually Talk”

” HotBlack, which has seating for 58, gained the recent attention of the Canadian news media for its counterintuitive approach”

In this article, I saw this word and I just paid attention to the length of the word and how hard it would be to try to understand and break down each part of the word. I saw the prefix counter and I knew that would be the objective of whatever the statement was stated. But I originally didn’t grasp the understanding of intuitive which lead me to another search that discussed the things based off of one’s feelings without conscious reasoning. Now I understand the word better than seeing just a big word that was hard to understand.

Seldom

Seldom(adverb):  in few instances: rarelyinfrequently

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/seldom

” Coffee Shop Skip Wi-Fi to Encourage Customers to Actually Talk” Christopher Mele

” Into all things digital that leads people too seldom communicate face to face”

I have encountered this word many times, and have barely paid any attention to it because I never really had to. But in this sense, it makes a lot of sense as to why the author decided to use the word in the phrase he put it in. This sentence makes more sense when you understand the word that was used. Now knowing this word will help with the future references.

Immersion

Immersion(noun): absorbing involvement

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/immersion

” Coffee Shops Skip Wi-Fi to Encourage Customers to Actually Talk” Christopher Mele

” He said he did not see his approach as revolutionary but as a response to society’s deep immersion into all things digital”

When reading this article, I just used the context clues at first to understand the meaning of being involved in the digital things when dealing with society. When finding out the meaning of the word, I realized that although I could have figured the meaning using context clues it still was valuable to find out the actual meaning of the word because it provided a better understanding.

Threshold

Threshold (noun):  the place or point of entering or beginning

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/threshold

“The way we live now” Colson Whitehead

“You didn’t know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbye.”

I have encountered this word many times before and when I see this word I just think of holding to a certain extent, in the sense of ” this is beyond the threshold” but then in this sense, you get to see that the word meant entrance in reference to the idea that you would no longer see this place again. Getting to understand the different context of the word helps to understand the word and sentence in a better sense.

Resplendent

Resplendent (Adjective): shining brilliantly

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/resplendent

” The happiest and saddest places in New York City, According to Twitter” Brian Merchant

“Dense urban jungles and resplendent verdant parks.”

In this reading, this is the second sentence and I know they were describing the park but I didn’t know in which way they were referring to the park, whether they were calling it beautiful or just full of trees. When finding the word, you realize that the definition fit the setting. By describing the park as shining it gives a better image to the reader of how the park is seen.

Solitude

Solitude (noun):  the quality or state of being alone or remote from society

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/solitude

” Walk with me” David L. Ulin

“The air was thin, the darkness brittle. I was alone. The solitude felt crushing as if I had driven off the edge of the known world. ”

I have encountered this word many times but never really paid attention to it, because there was always a way that I could overlook the word. In the way, the sentence used the word it made more sense to describe the feeling of being alone which is why I decided to incorporate the sentence before that to give a better understanding of being alone. Now the sentence makes a lot more sense although you could use context clues you get a way better understanding of the term.

Alkaline

Alkaline (adjective):  of, relating to, containing, or having the properties of an alkali or alkali metal: basic; especially,  of a solution: having a pH of more than 7

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alkaline
“Walk with me” David L. Ulin
” pavement dusted white with alkaline, homeless huddled at the intersections “
When I first encountered this word I only knew it as a battery company name and then I heard it again in my biology class where they discussed the alkalinity level. Searching and finding the definition I understand the sentence more because I originally overlooked the alkaline and thought using enough context clues would be enough

Burly

Burly (adjective): strongly and heavily built

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/burly

“Walk with me” David L. Ulin

” Every now and again I would see him, a burly man with close-cropped graying hair, ”

When I first encountered this word, I know that by using the context clues you can tell that they were trying to describe the person but I originally thought that he was trying to describe a homeless man. Now that I have found and have the ability to understand the word burly for future references I know how I can describe a person who was heavily built.

Consumerism

consumerism(noun): the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable; also: a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/consumerism

“The happiest and saddest place in New York, According to Twitter” Brian Merchant

“Times Square is the gleeful buzzing monument to American consumerism”

When I first encountered the word I knew that consumerism had something to do with money. when searching for this word I came to the understanding of the definition, I then realized the reason why they call “Times Square” a monument of consumerism because this is where the majority of funding occurs.
