My guide to a new detour

My normal route to City Tech consists of me taking the A train and getting off at Jay Street metro Tech. I then take the exist closest to City Tech and walk on Jay street to the entrance of the Namn building. However, my new route included taking the longest exist of the train station to City Tech. Rather than going straight down Jay street I took walk on Fulton street and then I took a left into a small street called Lawerence street that would take me back out to Jay street. This alley was quite smaller than Jay street and it quieter and dark. I liked this route because it was less crowded and rushed as Jay street. Although, I ended on Jay street again this detour provided some relaxation before heading out to Jay street. This alley had stores that opened later in the day like Papa Johns so this allowed there to be less traffic. I liked this route even though it was longer because it provided some relaxation.

City Tech walkers should definitely take this walk as it is a small escape from the traffic found on Jay street. Yes this walk is a little longer than my regular walk because i go in the opposite direction however, enjoying a little change is not hurting anyone. In this route you will also see another small college. Yes its a reminder you are also heading to school but i find this beneficial because you still have a grasp to reality. Yes, my objective was to find a relaxing detour but reality is important. As college students we want to focus our attention on relaxing things that help reduce stress. However, we should never lose our focus to be relax because the reason we are stressed because we are working hard for our degrees.

Possible detour

Since i am not familiar with the area around city tech i took advantage of this opportunity to explore new areas. Before going to find a detour for this assignment i know i want a quiet detour. The next morning when i got off the train i took a different out the train station. This exist took me towards Fulton and Jay street. On Fulton street there are many stores so i knew it wasn’t what i wanted for a detour. However, on Fulton there are many little streets with little stores and ten times more quieter. I enjoyed this detour because I found some peace and quiet something not on Jay street. The reason why these streets are quieter is because many of the stores around open later. For example, Papa Johns doesn’t open till later in the day. The closing of these stores doesn’t attract much people which makes this detour very pleasant.

A lifesaving detour (college student edition)

Part of the life of a New Yorker involves commuting either it be to work, school, the gym etc. As a young adult most of my commuting is to City Tech. This is my first semester to college so I haven’t had the time to explore the area of City Tech so my route has been the same. However, this project required looking for a new route that would provide some new energy. Taking a new route is definitely out of my comfort zone because I don’t like to change routes unless I’m very familiar with the area I’m in so picking this new route brought me out my comfort zone. This type of behavior is very popular among humans because change brings some sort of instability. Nevertheless, this shouldn’t shy us away from change. Positive change can help college students reduce some of the high level of stress.

My normal route to City Tech consists of me taking the A train and getting off at Jay Street metro Tech. I then take the exist closest to City Tech and walk on Jay street to the entrance of the Namn building. However, my new route included taking the longest exist of the train station to City Tech. Rather than going straight down Jay street I took walk on Fulton street and then I took a left into a small alley that would take me back out to Jay street. This street which is named Lawerence street was quite smaller than Jay street and its quieter and dark.

Surprisingly, I did encounter better energy taking this route. With my regular route I would feel very rushed to get to class. After getting off a busy and crowded train and heading towards Jay street one does feel overwhelmed. However, the detour I took allowed me to breathe, relax, and enjoy the morning. In a place like New York enjoying the morning is hard because we are all very busy getting to where we need to go. I definitely recommend this walk for city-each walkers because on Fulton you find many shops. In addition, this alley is calm, less crowded, and this alley takes you to many cute little shops. For a college student this could definitely be a enjoyable detour during any time of the day.

Taking walks are very beneficial to many aspects of our lives. According, to healthnbodytips.com, “One prominent benefit of early morning walk is that it can help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both of which contribute to heart disease.” When we take a detour we are adding time to get to the new location which counts as an early walk. This walk can benefit the health of our heart because morning walks help reduce stress. In addition, stylecraze.com states, ” Morning walks do more than just rejuvenating the body. They have the same positive effect on the mind as well. When you walk, the oxygen and blood supply to the brain are accelerated, and this, in turn, leads to an enhancement in mental alertness, brain function, and memory (23). Moreover, walking helps increase the brain volume and improves brain function in aged individual.” This reference helps us see that morning walks help improve our mental health. With a better mental health we are without a doubt going to have a more productive day.

As I had previously stated, change can sometimes bring a hazel because it brings us out of comfort zone and brings stress. However, Coaching Positive Performance claims, “The clearer you are about what you want, the easier it is for you to find what you are looking for.” Change can sometimes be in our control and when we have control its recommended we analyze it. With an analysis of the change we can fix possible things we may not like or even improve new changes. Change doesn’t always have to be negative as this article has shown it depends on the mindset we have going into changes. However, there are times where change is out of our control and we can face serious stress. The American Psychlogical association states, “But when you give yourself permission to step away from it, you let yourself have time to do something else, which can help you have a new perspective or practice techniques to feel less overwhelmed.” This article states the importance of removing ourselves from stressful situations temporarily. The detour we take offers us a short period of an “escape” from directly heading towards our daily activities.

In conclusion, when one is in a stress state one must remain calm and avoid additional stress. As New Yorkers and college students we can apply this by avoid taking a busy route to school after a hectic ride on public transportation. The MTA encounters many delays in the mornings which irritates commuters because it delays our activities. As college students we work very hard to achieve good academic grades which is very challenging as we juggle other responsibilities as well. The Univeristy of Michigan claims, “Many students find that they can reduce their level of academic stress by improving skills such as time management, stress management, and relaxation.” This claim emphases how important some relaxation during stress is vital. The detour in our busy lives will help us appreacite positive things like a beautiful morning. Focusing on natures beauty before a long day at school will help us relax. As we have learned a quiet place is recommendable to release stress. Reflecting on the morning is also very healthy for our minds which help improve our productivity.

Gretchen, Reynolds“How Walking in Nature Changes the Brain.”  The New York Times 22,July,2015

In this article  Mr. Reynolds  talk’s about  Gregory Bratman research, about the before and after effects in walking in nature.   Gregory Bratman  was a former student  Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources at Stanford University. Reynolds explain’s more about Bratman’s research. In the article it also mentions how the human brain restrains from stress and has less blood flow compared when someone that is “work up”.  Bratman also predicted that people that don’t explore nature as frequently are more likely to get mental illness like, depression , anxiety and more. Observing Bratman research , walking through nature help’s reduce’s  significantly mental illnesses.  Ultimately , this article is about the brain patterns, how different brain patterns change when people go to nature and what are the after effect when people go to nature. However, this connects to my project because if people take the route that has no green , they are most likely to be  negative. The positive side of walking through nature  would reduce being negative and actually help people with stress, negative thoughts .

Project 4 final draft

In New York and the city, people go through rough times and what I mean by rough times is when people go through crowded areas, when people are usually busy everyday, and when people have hard times to find jobs. I believe that every New Yorker are strong because New York is a popular place and it is hard for others to find a place to live. In my mornings, I take the easiest and fastest route as possible to get to City Tech. I take a lot of routes including buses and trains. Transportation takes a long time in Queens. It usually takes two hours to get here and I usually have morning classes so I would have to wake up early around 5 in the morning.

The first route I take is the Q27 bus in Queens. The Q27 bus is a long ride in queens because I live in Bayside and the bus goes to flushing. I usually sleep in the bus because Flushing MainSt is the last stop. Usually, people would wake me up at the last stop but I would wake up by myself. After getting off the bus, I would usually get breakfast from Dunkin Donuts because my classes are early and the lectures are really long. When I’m in Flushing Mainst, it’s really busy and crowded with a lot of Asian people. There are a lot of transportation in Flushing and a lot of places to shop and eat. Whenever I’m in Flushing Mainst, I think of Flushing like the city in Times Square because there’s a lot of lights and people.

The second route I take is the 7 train. There are two different 7 trains in the morning which is the express train and the local train. The express train is a lot faster for my route because it takes about 30 minutes or 40 minutes. The local train takes an hour to get to 5th avenue. I would have to get off 5th avenue to transfer to the F train. After getting off the 7 train to 5th avenue, I would have to walk inside the train station to the downtown F train.

The third route I take is The F train. The F train also has two trains which are the express train and the local train. I have to take the local train because the express doesn’t take you to Jay St. The local F train takes 20 minute to Jay St. I would just listen to music in the train and look at the stops. After getting off on Jay St metrotech, I would have to walk to City Tech. After getting out of the train station, the walk is about 5 – 7 minutes to city tech. However, I would see NYU campus and the building. NYU campus has a great view because there are a lot of people walking by and there are a lot of good restaurants like Chipotle, Five Guys, and more. There are better restaurants like Shake Shack, McDonalds, BurgerKing, and Panera Bread. When I’m in City Tech early, I would sometimes grab breakfast in the cafeteria. I would eat bacon, egg, and cheese in croissant. However when I go to City Tech late, I would run up the stairs and go to class. Sometimes, I would feel lazy and take the elevator.

When I go to class, I would take notes and I would try to concentrate in class. The lectures are really long and some professors are really boring so I would sometimes take a nap. After class, I would grab sometime to eat for lunch. Shake Shack is good quality but very expensive for a burger. It would cost around $13 for a small burger. I usually save my money and not eat lunch at all. After lunch, I sometimes have classes and sometimes I would not have classes. After finishing school, I would have to go back to the F train. The route is kind of different than the one I explained earlier. I would take the F local train to Queens/Manhattan. I would get off 42nd st to transfer to the 7 train. During the afternoon, the trains only runs local till 3 PM because it’s usually not busy in the afternoon.

The 7 local train is a very long ride because it takes an hour so I would sleep in the train. Sometimes, people would wake me up but sometimes I would wake up around 10 minutes before my last stop. After getting off the 7 train, I would have to walk 3 blocks to the bus stop. However, I would go to the gym after getting off the 7 train. The bus is the same bus I take in the mornings and get off at Horace Harding exp which is in Bayside. The bus ride is usually 30 minutes long.

In the mornings, my transportation depresses me but sometimes, I would wake up as a happy person. I really like walking in the city because there are a lot of people and a lot of lights. The city changes my mood in a positive way but in Flushing main st, I really don’t care because I go there almost every day. However, I grew up in Flushing mainst before when I was young and it brings me memories when I’m walking to the 7 train. The walk is sometimes calm and sometimes fast because it is NYC.

The Quiet Walk

New York City has been and always will be a place known for its boisterous noises and wild energy that is the lights, people and entertainment. Even if we don’t think about it, sound is always apart of our daily routines in the mornings, weather its hearing the alarm clock or walking through the streets listening to the unorganized symphony of cars honking. Sound is what keeps us going and what gets us moving faster even if you don’t realize it, an example would be the ticking of a wristwatch that would no doubt make you speed up just a tad faster in order to make it to work on time, or the sound of the Starbucks barista yelling out your name to alert you that your coffee’s ready. There is no doubt that we rely on sound, however, the blissful serenity that is quiet is not a daily constant that most people get to enjoy. I have found the best route to make sure that my commute from home to school is the quietest route.

One day on my own commute to school, I took the long way. One way for me to get to school is to walk down five blocks away from my house to the B41 bus, during that walk its quiet in my neighborhood and I like to hear the sound of the wind breezing past me as a car drives by because its very peaceful. When I reach the bus stop which is on Bedford Ave, I see a lot of people who are waiting for the bus dressed in their nursing scrubs or business casual wear, and younger people who are around my age or younger who have a dazed look in their eyes, or a very blank expression blasting their music on their headphones. When the bus finally comes, it makes a very loud screeching noise as it approaches which annoyingly interrupts the calm flow of my own music. The bus is always crowded but noise is usually kept to a minimum as the riders are either silent scrolling on their cellphones, or quietly chatting to their friends or asking a stranger if this is the right bus to be on. As for me I am a person who is always musically attuned, I usually start off my mornings with lo-fi hip hop beat instrumentals and soft R&B. I really like my music because it isn’t too loud and isn’t too quiet, but it has the right amount of slow beat that I can bob my head to. The ride down Flatbush is much more peaceful that way. When I get off at Atlantic Ave, I begin weaving my way through the insane amount of people who are very loud and awake which makes the walk annoying to hear the dissonance meshing sounds of cars honking and the music playing in my headphones. When I get reach City Point on DeKalb always makes my mornings a little bit better as I get to breathe easy in the open and quiet space inside on the first floor. Although on Jay Street, it’s even more loud and crowded my mornings are always better with those small five minutes of quiet, listening to my chill music.

There are many people who enjoy listening to their favorite tunes in the morning, weather it be slow jazz or loud rock music. There are many benefits to listening to music, especially in the morning according to Sandra Pawula of ‘‘How listening to music benefits the brain’’, “Listening to music triggers the brain’s nucleus accumbens, responsible for releasing the feel-good neurochemicals dopamine”(Pawula.). Music can help relieve some anxiety problems and reduce stress. It is even more beneficial to listen to music if you’re a student studying hard because Pawula also states that “science has shown that listening to music enhances reading and literary skills, reasoning and mathematical abilities”(Pawula). So creating a well rounded studying playlist so that you can concentrate is an extremely good idea if you’re determined to remain focused and energized. In addition to that, Deane Alban of ‘‘How music affects the brain for the better’’ claims that, “listening to music at work can make you a happier, more productive employee, especially if it’s the music you’ve chosen”(Alban). Music can improve your mood to a positive one and thus make you into a motivated person who completes tasks at a quicker rate. Alban also infers that, “Music
helps students excel in the following ways: improved language development, improved tests scores and increased spatial intelligence”(Alban). Music is a subject that is very easy to dismiss because of the stereotypes that surround people who prefer to listen to to a certain type of music more than another. Music has a lot of unseen benefits that can help the brain keep healthy and stay active which helps us do well on tests, learning abilities and overall intelligence.

In conclusion, sound is a constant in our lives that we are always adapting to in order to benefit our own need of survival depending on our environment. Quiet is a sound that is very under appreciated, I took a route of quietness and I valued the few minutes I got to spend when it was just my music alone.

Project 4 final.

In this city, people always seem so busy, whether it’s on a weekday or a weekend, and the question I have for them and I are; are we happy where we are right now? Or the moment we stepped out the house at 7 a.m in the morning? While I was rushing to school, I notice there are many adults with their briefcases, students with their backpacks. New York City is a beautiful city and we, the young one always ignored the beauty of it. Yes, the young one, because of we still in the early stage of our lives and we got caught up with responsibilities. People in their late stage of their life are the one who notices the changes and the beauty of this city. When we are in our ways to our destination, our moods either tired, fed up, sleepy or annoyed. There are ways to boost up our mood early in the morning, and depends on if you have extra time for it. A walk through a path filled with nature or peacefulness can help you relieve your stress and achieve your inner desire for calmness.

The route I take to get to my class is a common route that multiple people take. I’ve never notice any details as I rush to my class, the views from the first day became parts of my memories and I’ve never bother to go update or renew it. Weeks ago, I came up with the thoughts of walking the same route but at a slow pace. I stepped out the R train station, passed through the mall. When I looked in, I saw worker placing the food in its section. The steam from the food blurred out the windows and also my view. I walked the same path every day but never noticed the changes. Between the NYU building and the Chipotle, there’s a little road with light poles on each side. If you look carefully, you’ll notice the Christmas light decoration around the poles, waiting for night time to come for them to brighten up the street. Instead of making a turn towards Starbucks like I usually do, I walk straight to the other NYU building. There’s a little park on NYU’s campus when I was walking towards it, in the middle of the road stands a giant Christmas tree in the middle of the road. The Christmas tree is something that wasn’t there in the first place, the community put it up due to the upcoming Christmas season. When I enter the park, the leaves are resting on the ground, the trees are held bald, however, it does not ruin the peacefulness of this park. In the park, there are benches for passengers or students to relax. The views calm me down, brought peacefulness to my heart.

There are researchers proving that taking a walk in nature can affect your brain’s function the way of thinking. According to Gretchen Reynolds, the editor of “How walking in Nature changes the brain’ states that ‘A walk in the park may soothe the mind and, in process, change the workings of our brains in ways that improve our mental health, according to an interesting new study of the physical effects on the brain of visiting nature.” Walking in a green area helps the human body feel relieved, which revolves changing our way of thinking and since most of our generation spend their times outdoor dealing with stresses and anxiety, seeing the color green gives our brains a break and drop all of the stresses. Experiments are made to prove the hypothesis.

The color green define as safe and secure in our daily life, nature’s green can make us feel safe walking in that area. Lindsay Holmes, the author of ‘This is your brain on Nature’ said that “Research consistently finds that nature has a profound impact on the brain. A 2014 study found that participants who took group nature walks saw a host of mental-health benefits, including decreased depression and better moods.” Nature is like a medicine that heals us whenever we’re stressed or have the mental issue. It’s not just a saying, it’s being scientifically proven.

There are multiple routes to the school but R train takes fewer times and more efficient but most importantly is because of the path that I have to walk through every day. Every season the decorations around the area are changing but the feeling of nature surrounding me does not fade away. There are times that the commute can be the death of us in the morning due to delays, that’s why we need to choose the right route for us to relax without stopping our legs. Every route you take has their own unique surroundings and aroma, you just need to take your eyes off your phone so you can spot it.

Part 2 Project 4 “My Route”

The route that I took was a great walk. I got out of the Borough Hall train station where the 4,5,2,and R are at. Once I got out of the train station I made a left and headed towards the back of the court house. Then proceed towards Columbus Park where I then passed a beautiful fountain. Most mornings there’s a market that start at eight am to then end at two pm or even later then that. The market usually  has health vegetables and fruits. As well it’s an opportunity for makers to get there product out there for people to buy. The busiest time is at eight in the morning just for the fact that people are eager to what they need first hand while it’s fresh.  As most mornings that I do pass it I continue to walk through the market to the middle of the park. Where I notice that the seats are lined up in a straight line and something that really stand out is the fact that you are able to see the  Manhattan bridge.  As you continue walking you will then pass the Columbus Statue. Once you pass the Columbus Statue you then make a right where you  will then continue walking straight to the college.

The Beauty of My Route

In New York what people usually tend to look for outside is how clean the area is and what are the special qualities that stick out that make that place so unique. In most cases people like to see a beautiful view. So people, like tourists tend to go to the main sites that are popular because of there nice views. People tend to see a beautiful view as a land of water, even a land of nature, or even can be building that can be concerned  a beautiful view. As well it can be where a sun rise is that can be concerned a beautiful view. Most place can have certain designs that are diverse where with that change makes it beautiful and one of a kind. What makes places so beautiful is that no place is designed or built the same exact way. Every place is unique in there own way and for that can make a place or even route beautiful.

The route I took was based on beauty and how everything is put together. The fact that once you walk this route and actually have the time to observe it. It does show the qualities of why it’s so beautiful.  Not only is the view beautiful but it can help people start off on a right track. Where the article “Why Is Morning Walk Necessary in Today’s Life Style?” it states “They should walk in fresh and pollution free air in the morning. It is not only good for fighting against acidity and digestion problems, but also provides Vitamin D.”  This tells that morning walks can help a person. So since I I take this route in the morning it means that I’m getting that fresh air every morning. As well the route I take is early in the morning and in the early afternoon. So know matter what I still get to see the fountain, the market still going on, the statue and the bridge. Compared to the night where it’s not the same. The fountain isn’t on, the market is already gone, you can barely see the statue but the back of the court house lights up and the bridge is light up which makes it still beautiful. Not as beautiful in the morning but the night and morning have there own beautiful qualities.

Beauty can bring many things such as happiness. Just by taking this route every day brings a smile to my face. The reason why it puts a smile on my face is because the way everything is put together and structured. Depending on what people like a certain place or route can make them happy because of how beautiful it is. For an example when it’s a sunny day and somebody is walking the first thing the see is flowers. Just by seeing flowers can make the happy and look around there surrounding to see all the beautiful flowers in the area. In the article “The Beauty-Happiness Connection” it states “Beauty tends to feel like something that must be found in special places—parks and museums, galleries and exotic cities… But finding beauty in normal activities can bring deep happiness to life”. What this means that beauty brings out a good thing in people’s lives. With what ever it is that makes that person happy it is because of the beauty that they have seen in during their morning walk or even just a place that they feel comfortable with. Another piece that shows how places can make somebody happy from beauty is from the same article that states “But the next three types of moments where people recorded the highest levels of happiness were all related to beauty: when at the theater, ballet, or a concert; at a museum or an art exhibit; and while doing an artistic activity (e.g. painting, fiction writing, sewing). Even sexually intimate moments could be argued to be rooted in beauty”. Which can bring back to my route on how with all the trees, the way the chairs are set up, the open space in the middle, the fountain near by back of the court which follows up on big steps that people can sit on. Last and not least the bridge is the one that stands out even more so. The reason why is because when you are seating on those steps eating your lunch the things you see is what makes that route so beautiful to walk. Where you see people moving and being active and the most is you see the bridge behind it all which bring everything together and defines beauty.

In conclusion the route I took stands out to be beautiful. As well I know people will be excited to  get the same feeling as I did. Not only does the route care beauty it also cares a lot of other unique characteristics that are very noticeable.
