This glossary assignment was alright to start off in English class. However, I realized I had a lot of projects and other important things to do. In my other courses, there are a lot of studying to do and this assignment was honestly not important to me however I still did it. I felt like if I did have the time, I would absolutely this assignment because learning new words everyday or every week is important to me. It improves my vocabulary skills and it is useful in life. I did some of these vocab words last minute because I was studying for finals and I was busy with other important things to do. In High school, we did not really have any of these assignments however in middle school, I did have similar assignments like these. This assignment definitely improved my vocabulary and helped me reading skills by learning the word better and the sentence better. The articles were interesting and researching the words takes a lot of time. I did enjoy reading other classmates glossary words as well so that improved my vocabulary skills too.

Project 4 final draft

In New York and the city, people go through rough times and what I mean by rough times is when people go through crowded areas, when people are usually busy everyday, and when people have hard times to find jobs. I believe that every New Yorker are strong because New York is a popular place and it is hard for others to find a place to live. In my mornings, I take the easiest and fastest route as possible to get to City Tech. I take a lot of routes including buses and trains. Transportation takes a long time in Queens. It usually takes two hours to get here and I usually have morning classes so I would have to wake up early around 5 in the morning.

The first route I take is the Q27 bus in Queens. The Q27 bus is a long ride in queens because I live in Bayside and the bus goes to flushing. I usually sleep in the bus because Flushing MainSt is the last stop. Usually, people would wake me up at the last stop but I would wake up by myself. After getting off the bus, I would usually get breakfast from Dunkin Donuts because my classes are early and the lectures are really long. When I’m in Flushing Mainst, it’s really busy and crowded with a lot of Asian people. There are a lot of transportation in Flushing and a lot of places to shop and eat. Whenever I’m in Flushing Mainst, I think of Flushing like the city in Times Square because there’s a lot of lights and people.

The second route I take is the 7 train. There are two different 7 trains in the morning which is the express train and the local train. The express train is a lot faster for my route because it takes about 30 minutes or 40 minutes. The local train takes an hour to get to 5th avenue. I would have to get off 5th avenue to transfer to the F train. After getting off the 7 train to 5th avenue, I would have to walk inside the train station to the downtown F train.

The third route I take is The F train. The F train also has two trains which are the express train and the local train. I have to take the local train because the express doesn’t take you to Jay St. The local F train takes 20 minute to Jay St. I would just listen to music in the train and look at the stops. After getting off on Jay St metrotech, I would have to walk to City Tech. After getting out of the train station, the walk is about 5 – 7 minutes to city tech. However, I would see NYU campus and the building. NYU campus has a great view because there are a lot of people walking by and there are a lot of good restaurants like Chipotle, Five Guys, and more. There are better restaurants like Shake Shack, McDonalds, BurgerKing, and Panera Bread. When I’m in City Tech early, I would sometimes grab breakfast in the cafeteria. I would eat bacon, egg, and cheese in croissant. However when I go to City Tech late, I would run up the stairs and go to class. Sometimes, I would feel lazy and take the elevator.

When I go to class, I would take notes and I would try to concentrate in class. The lectures are really long and some professors are really boring so I would sometimes take a nap. After class, I would grab sometime to eat for lunch. Shake Shack is good quality but very expensive for a burger. It would cost around $13 for a small burger. I usually save my money and not eat lunch at all. After lunch, I sometimes have classes and sometimes I would not have classes. After finishing school, I would have to go back to the F train. The route is kind of different than the one I explained earlier. I would take the F local train to Queens/Manhattan. I would get off 42nd st to transfer to the 7 train. During the afternoon, the trains only runs local till 3 PM because it’s usually not busy in the afternoon.

The 7 local train is a very long ride because it takes an hour so I would sleep in the train. Sometimes, people would wake me up but sometimes I would wake up around 10 minutes before my last stop. After getting off the 7 train, I would have to walk 3 blocks to the bus stop. However, I would go to the gym after getting off the 7 train. The bus is the same bus I take in the mornings and get off at Horace Harding exp which is in Bayside. The bus ride is usually 30 minutes long.

In the mornings, my transportation depresses me but sometimes, I would wake up as a happy person. I really like walking in the city because there are a lot of people and a lot of lights. The city changes my mood in a positive way but in Flushing main st, I really don’t care because I go there almost every day. However, I grew up in Flushing mainst before when I was young and it brings me memories when I’m walking to the 7 train. The walk is sometimes calm and sometimes fast because it is NYC.

Project 4 part 2

The routes I take to get to city tech are the Q27 (Bus), 7 train, and F train. One route which is the 7 train is important to me because when I am walking to the 7 train, I’m in Flushing Main St. In order to get to Flushing Main St from Bayside which is my area, you can take different routes which are only buses. The buses are Q27, Q17, and Q16. The Q27 is better for me because it takes me 5 minutes to walk to my bus stop. The Q27 comes often and it’s really crowded. After getting off the last stop on the Q27, you’ll have to walk East till you see a walking sign and the block ends there. After that, you’ll have to walk west to the 7 train stop. There are a lot of restaurants and hobbies like shopping malls around. I usually eat breakfast when I’m going to the 7 train because the commute is very long for me. There are two different 7 trains which are the express and the local. I take the express because I’m at the 7 stop really early around 6 AM. The express train takes a shorter time than the local train however it’s still a long way. In Flushing Main St is very busy and it looks like another NYC. It looks like another NYC to me because it’s always busy here even in the mornings and there are a lot of things to do there. While taking the 7 train, there is a mets willings point stop and it’s the mets stadium. The mets stadium is a great view because whenever there are games, I would see a lot of people in the train to go see the mets play and it’s very crowded. I never went to the mets stadium or never got off mets willings point but it is interesting.

Project 4

The routes I choose to go through everyday to get to school are familiar for everyone. I take a bus and two trains which are Q27, 7 Train, and F train. This is the easiest and quickest route to get to school. When you’re in flushing to take the 7 train, you see a lot of delis, restaurants, and small shopping malls/places. When you go to city tech, you can see a lot of different restaurants and shopping places. You can also see NYU Engineering school and NYU has a little park where people would rest and there are fast food restaurants in the park.

Mollify

  1. Mollify – to reduce in intensity

Website: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mollify

I encountered the word by splitting the word “Moli” and “lify.” Moli was more familiar to me than lify. Putting the word together did not sound familiar however in the article I read, it made more sense. In the article, the sentence ended with mollify however the sentence after the word mollify, it slightly explains what it means but I had to think about it.

Example: The manager tried to mollify the angry workers by giving them longer breaks.

sterling

  1. Sterling – British money, but it also describes as anything high quality.

Website: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sterling

I encountered the word by reading an article. Also it is an middle english word like the word “star.” Sterling sounded familiar to me and it sounds like steering. Sterling is something that is better and steering is like changing. I assumed steering and sterling almost has the same meaning because they both have changes.

Example: A sum of 20 millions sterling was voted as compensation to the planters.

Roue

  1. Roue –  a man devoted to a life of sensual pleasure : rake

Website: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/rake#h5

I encountered the word by reading an article. The sentence after the word roue made more sense to me and I read it carefully and thought about it. Roue was not familiar at first for me but now it makes more sense to me.

Example: He was in his 50s, a rich and handsome roue.

An insight to the Brooklyn Bridge

An Insight to the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge can be perceived in many different perspectives. Like the first chapter of “The Colossus of New York”, City Limits, Colson Whitehead talks about how those who are not from New York City may not be able to see the “changes” that the city itself has made, however, those who were born and raised in the city may have been able to see the progress in the city’s changes. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York City’s prominent monuments in which it attracts tourists from all over the place. Those who are traveling to and from Brooklyn to Manhattan would use this bridge. Being a “true” New Yorker, born and raised,  I have been able to witnessed the changes that have been made to the bridge itself throughout the years. The bridge is known to be able to see the Manhattan skyline and that is why it may attract tourists. Moreover, since I have lived here all my life, I have been able to truly understanding its history and what the bridge means to those who have lived in the city all their life.

Those who are visitors to the area may be clueless to know of any information about the bridge. They may see the bridge as simply just a “bridge.” Many tourists take pictures on the bridge and would just look at the view of the skyline of the city; or they may only think of it as something that is used for transportation. However, those who were born and raised here may know things about the bridge that others don’t. For example, those who are considered as “true” New Yorkers may know how long it takes to cross the bridge or when it would be the best time

to cross the bridge for a great view, no traffic, or simply just to take pictures of the view. Another example could be that they know what time the bridge is busiest or the attractions they hold at the end of each side of the bridge.

In contrast to a “true” New Yorkers perspective, those who are visiting, tourists, perceive the bridge differently. Tourists usually take pictures and they enjoy the skyline. Tourists may not know the history of the Brooklyn Bridge however those who were born in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge is a popular tourist attraction and destination. Those that are visiting may not know where to explore and look for popular attractions online, thus the Brooklyn bridge being on the list of top 10 popular attractions in New York.

From my experience as a New Yorker, the Brooklyn Bridge was a great experience because I used to walk on the bridge, take pictures, and have a lot memories there with my family. A lot of buildings around the Brooklyn Bridge were in construction and one of those buildings was a coffee shop. The coffee shop was unfortunately torn down for an office building where high corporates took over the property. The coffee shop was completely demolished and it was something that was special to me. What I’m trying to get at here is that to those who are visiting, the buildings and popular attractions really has no meaning to them; where as the coffee shop made an impact on my life.

Our city is constantly changing with its buildings, sightseeing attractions, demographics, and economic status. Tourists are blind of how they see New York’s change in development because they’re only here for the attractions and the aesthetics of the city itself for about a week or two. However, a New Yorker who has lived here all of his/ her life sees the changes New York has made. Another interesting experience of mine is when I was an amateur photographer in the summer on Brooklyn Bridge. It was very interesting because New Yorkers and tourists would ask me to shoot a photo with them on the Brooklyn Bridge. When I’m with a tourist, their reactions of seeing the bridge are different from that of a New Yorker’s because it was their first time seeing the skyline and exploring the Bridge. For me, the view didn’t excite me because I’ve been there a countless number of times. Another interesting contrast of my experience was when I was taking photos with a different tourist and he told me that the bridge was a very long walk. It was important to me because a New Yorker in the city would have to walk long distances and it seems like they don’t know how long they’ve walked for a day in the city.

Throughout this essay, I’ve explained the perspective of how a New Yorker may perceive the Brooklyn Bridge and the perspective of how a tourist may perceive the bridge. New Yorkers grew up here and are aware of the history behind the prominent monuments, such as the Brooklyn bridge. Where as in tourists only come to New York City because they enjoy the aesthetics of the city and/ or because it is very eventful.

The reason why I chose Dumbo is because usually people would take pictures here. A lot of people take pictures here because it’s a nice background and it is a popular area here. On the Brooklyn bridge, there are people walking to the other side and cars driving on the bridge. Around the Brooklyn bridge, there are parks for sports like basketball, soccer, handball, and volleyball. The Brooklyn bridge is usually busy and it’s very easy to see Manhattan on the Brooklyn bridge.
