Weekly Reflective Journal #4

This is my fourth week here as a WDWCP. I’m starting to get used to my schedule of work and class. I work five days a week and go to class two days a week. I like my schedule because on my days of work, I can focus on work and my days of class, I can focus on class.

I have really fallen into understanding the four keys. Right after I clock in and get my assignment and before leaving my stationed building, I always give myself a checklist. Am I show ready? Am I within the disney look? Is my shirt tucked in? Are any of my tattoos visible? Do I have my water bottle? Do I have my telecast handy? Is my name tag on?

Also, just something I noticed the other day. When I first started work as a Disney Hollywood Studio’s Park Greeter, I thought that I would be able to personally interact with guests since I’d be one of the first people they’d see. I soon realized that sometimes it’s hard to connect with guests, especially when all they want to do is get into the park and play. I definitely don’t blame them. That is exactly the reason why people go to Disney World.

I was also able to attend Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival. People who attended would get a passport where they can obtain stamps from different vendors as they tried (or not try) their food. I collected a stamp from each country vendor that participated.

Weekly Journal #5

This week jump started the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festivle. In Epcot there are two major festivals, the Wine and Food festival that happens in the Fall and the Flower and Garden festival that occurs in the spring. I am very happy to be able to not only attend this festival but take apart in its work. Even though I am in outdoor vending pieces of this event are spread along the entire park and because spring break season is now upon us the park is as packed as ever.

In the International Flower and Graden festival their are various amounts of special dishes and beverages that are only here when this festival takes place. What I have really enjoyed though are the detailed topiaries that you can find in both Future World and the World ShowCase. These topiaries consist of classic and new Disney characters that have been recreated in amazing living sculptures by renowned horticulturists.

This festival lasts a full 3 months from March 2nd to May 30th. When entering the park you are constantly reminded of its presence and as soon as you walk in there is a amazing topiarie of Mini Mouse to welcome you into the park. Before the festival actually started I was one of the first people to see some of the events they had lined up. Such as the “Butterflies On the Go” exhibit where you are in a big netted tent that allows you to have beautiful butterflies flying all around you basically living as they normally would. Some people are even lucky enough to have some of the butterflies land on their shoulders.

image

The reason that this event is so special is mainly because of it food. They do have other events to keep everyone entertained and very much in to a greener earth, but what people really come for is the food that they know they can not get anywhere else. On my first visit I did not get the time or chance to purchase any of the specialty foods but I know that I will be back more then once to really be able to enjoy all that the festival has to offer.

This week has been very busy for the resort I work for. Pop Century almost reached its full occupancy. So many check ins were taking place, it was amazing. The place became very fast paced for some time and everybody was very busy. I loved it. Now that I get to see what is like to work at a hotel, how much you have to multi-task and how attentive you have to be towards the guests and how you need to pay attention to every detail, I realized that this is what I want to do. I realized that I chose the right field and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

Everyday you get to experience something new. Every guest has an unique situation that needs to be taken care of. Sometimes it can be a little challenging to try to cater to their needs but is not impossible. I love how enthusiastic everyone is at my work place. Even when they are very tired they do their best to assist the guests, have a smile on their faces and provide the best service possible. I am still working on enhancing my interactive skills and I can see how everyday I adapt more and become better at it. Working at front desk is a very exciting and challenging role that can actually be very helpful and allow me to learn many things that can be useful in the future towards my career.

Weekly Reflective Journal #3

This has been my third week here as a WDWCP and my first week of actual work has started. Being a Disney Hollywood Studio’s Park Greeter is actually exactly what I imagined. Being a park greeter makes you feel like the face of the company in a way. We are the first ones to see the guests. Besides security, drivers and vacation planners. We are the ones who let them in the park.

To get into the park, Walt Disney World uses something called touch points. Where people will either scan a card or a magic band that is linked with their card (ticket). While being at the touch point, we greet people, make connections and conversations. We also assist the guest with an questions and concerns. For example, where is the closest bathroom or where is the closest fast pass kiosk.

Although, as I do like my role here at Walt Disney World, I would still prefer to work indoors at a resort. My biggest reason is because of my fear of high temperatures. The heat and me do not get a long at all. I heard that summers in Florida are quite brutal with the temperature and weather. I also have to wear long sleeves and long pants at all times because of my tattoos. That would be a future set back for me.

The Hcareers’ article “Transitioning into a Leadership Role” talks about strategies for newly promoted managers. To get promoted to a managerial position is sort of a big deal, specially at Walt Disney World. With that new position it also comes a lot more work and responsibilities.

At Animal Kingdom, Vacation Planning only have three statused coordinators, and about four coordinator proficients. Statused coordinators are coordinators that work full time, and proficients are the ones that are vacation planners but also have one or two coordinator shifts a week. Coordinator proficients are vacation planners that are trying to get a full time coordinator positions. Therefore I am always watching them and learning about the different tasks they have. I have met a girl that did the college program in 2014, after her program she finished school and came back for a part time that later led to a full time, and now she is one of the coordinator proficients. I admire her for working her way up and I hope I can follow her path after I obtain my bachelor’s degree.

I was told that Vacation Planners in Walt Disney World have a very high chance to also get a position with Guest Relations, and from there you can pretty much move up to any managerial positions because Guest Relations is very abroad and they deal with every conflict or concern a guest can have.

Networking is also a big part on anyone’s career. If you can network with the right people you can have more opportunities to find the position you have always wanted. It is very important to always meet new people to expand your horizons, and you never know where a simple “Hello, how are you?” can lead to.

The article “Storms of Summer’ by Barbara Higgins was very interesting. Luckily, it is not hurricane season during my stay in Orlando for the program, so I haven’t heard much about hurricane drills and those type of emergency situations.

However, Disney’s main priority is the safety of our guests and of course cast members as well. In the different training sessions, meetings and classes I had in Disney property, the facilitators always show you a safety video where they tell you where the near exits are, and what to do in case of an emergency. Then they proceed to show you where the telephones are to call alpha units, and where we will evacuate in case of an emergency.

At my work location we always talk about Safety, at the start of my shift I always have to attend a meeting called the genie chat, where we talk about the forecast, park hours, updates and most important we share safety stories. For Vacation Planners, we didn’t receive any training emergency related because we mostly work inside the booths, and we don’t have direct contact with the guests.

My leader always mentions the safety line which is in the back of our ID’s and the security line for any type of emergency.

“The Storms of Summer” by Barbara Higgins was an interesting article, concerning a hurricane situation that affected Florida State. Disney is a multi-national company that strives to ensure that their guests and employees are safe. Disney’s motto is “Safe D Begins with Me,” which I agree on.

During my week of training at Disney Hollywood studios, I learned procedures to a lot of situations. For example, how to handle children if they’re lost, how to handle adults if they have lost their children, where the AED Defibrillators are located, where the emergency exits are.

Luckily, Walt Disney World is all about safety. The company really tries to implement that practice on to their cast members. Cast members are trained through being walked through the park and showed which areas are important and by reading a manual. The lesson that is learned is to always be prepared for the worst. Being prepared makes situations that are out of our control, more easy, protected and controllable.

This week was my first time going to Epcot park and I was really surprised when I saw the Spaceship ball right in front of the main entrance. The Spaceship Earth in future world at Epcot is a ride that takes people to a gentle journey through time that technologically man has evolved. This iconic and symbolic structure is one of the most recognizable structures of any theme parks. The ride takes about Fifteen minutes and it demonstrates to the guest how advancements in human communication and technology have helped to us to create one step at a time up to day.

The  reason why this famous and iconic structure made me reflective this week is because that for the first time in my life I have been in a ride that really made me think about where we are coming from in terms of communication and technology. I know that now in days, we as the new generation we don’t even care to know how we all have got to this point where everything is virtual and technology-wise. I still remember when in my house like Fifteen years ago we still had the black and white TV and when not everybody could have a computer in the house. But after I went into this ride I realized how advanced we were technologically  at that time compared to Thirty years ago. I saw how big were the computers, it was like the size of a house and now I can hold it with one hand. Another thing that really surprise me was when in one part of the ride we were like outside the Earth and I have to say that it feels very real I can almost say that I kind of have the idea of how it feels to be out in the space. I know all of this information is not new to me because I have taken classes and I have read books, watched videos etc. But what is new to me is that I have never lived this experience in reality like I did in the Spaceship ride, because it felt like I went back in time and through time up to the world we are currently living.

From what I have seen working at two locations, the mangers and leaders try their best to work hand in hand with each other. Unfortunately I have not had the privilege to trail a manager or perform any of their tasks, but the ones that I have spoken to were able to give me good insite on some of the processes they go through on a daily basis. With in the Walt Disney Company their is a lot of rules and regulations that they must follow and enforce as well as keeping everyone in line. This does not mean they are like dictators because for the most part all of the managers I have met seem to be very nice people and interacts with their employees well, but they do still have a job to uphold.

During my time at Epoct, after my training has been completed I got the chance to work at one of the food carts by myself. This was very nerve racking but I did feel confident in my training to make it through the day. During my time at this cart of the managers came by simply as one of his walk through’s. While being at my cart he was able to assist me with the customers along with watching my interactions, just as stated in the article “START OFF AS AN OBSERVER”. He knew that I was a new comer to this business and has shown nothing but respect and patients when on the job. During the time he was at my cart he completed an audit of my money. This was the first time I had ever been audited but I knew it was expected to come eventually. After completeing the audit he was kind enough to explain what he was doing and why he did it. I told him this would be my first time and when ever someone hears that, manger or employee, they do their best to help out when needed. He told me this audit is to make sure that the money in the register are accurate to the money in the POS system. This helps them find out if the person is stealing or if their were just minor mistakes during transaction with the guest. If their was a kind of mix up this also helps correct the problem before having to cash out at the end of the night He also assured me not to be worried when this happens, it is a regular procedure.

I did appericate this manager giving me the complete run down of the money audit just in case I their was a problem with my drawer. This also allowed me to see what a manager job in tails. As an employee at Epcot you are held responsible for the money in your drawer, as a manager you are responsible for everyone’s money and keeping them true to the Disney code. For being at such an enormous business such as Disney, I would feel very intimidated as to running a peice of it. I would hope that I am able to uphold to the challenge as explained in the article but no one is perfect and I know for a fact that Disney understands that. I would hope that one day I can come back and start a full time career here at Disney World where I can work my way up to a managerial position. This is a place of opportunity where dreams can happen so I know that with time and effort this dream can become a reality.

Reading the article ‘Storms of Summer’ by Barbara Higgins is very interesting. I believe it is very important for a company to focus on their response and how prepared they are in case of an emergency because in the end this actually affects the guests. The resort where I work, is very prepared when it comes to emergency response. I think this is very important since this resort is very large and many guests come to visit.

I asked one of my trainers how was the resort prepared in case of an emergency and what would they do in such situations. He explained to me that employees usually volunteer in the Hurricane patrol team. They provide them with gears to provide service under the weather and help the guests. They have to stay in property for 24 hours assisting and helping with sandbags as well to protect the property, until warning has passed. They also have first aid defibrillators. This actually helps in case of extreme emergencies such as if a guest has a heart attack but only qualified personal is able to use it. They also have a swat team and emts and ambulances that are separate entities but still are under Disney payroll which I find really interesting. The company altogether takes safety very seriously and takes proper care of their guests. So if an emergency arises they are very well prepared to respond and take action. Not only to protect their guests but their employees as well.
