Abhorrent

Abhorrent: (adjective) causing repugnance; detestable; loathsome:

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/abhorrent

“Some of my interests are playing video games, mainly RPGs (role playing games) as it takes you away from some of the abhorrent things I’ve seen that humans are capable of doing to each other.”

I encountered this word while reading one of my colleagues projects about themselves. I analyzed context clues and I came to a conclusion that it meant something bad. The definition gave me another word that I didn’t quite understand which was “repugnance”. And repugnance means intense disgust. To gain a better understanding of the word abhorrence I looked up synonyms and familiar words such as “hateful, disgust, and revolting” came up. Abhorrent can also mean utterly opposed or on the contrary, but I feel like disgust or revolting fits this context the best.

Posterity

Posterity (Noun) :all future generations  EX: She’ll be remembered by posterity.

When I was reading the book “Looking Backward” by “Edward Bellamy”  on page 105 ,  I stumbled on a word that I had trouble using context clues. The word is Posterity and this word had me stumped.  When I was using context clues I figured the word meant  something on hold for the moment or long term, but when I went back to re-read the sentence it didn’t make sense to me . So, I had no option but to go online. once I found the definition,  I was way too off and thanked myself that I went online  .  I went to google images just to make sure I have a good understanding of it. The way that I would explain it in my own word would be,  that kids now are going to be the future tomorrow. An example would like Michael Jordan,  he left a legacy in the NBA and future generation will know who’s Michael Jordan because of his legacy .

Arbitrary

Arbitrary

Arbitrary (Adjective): .Based on or determined by individual preference or convenience rather than by necessity or the intrinsic nature of something

“In my own experiences as a student, I have enjoyed voluntary, informal collaborations with my friends, but I have resented being forced into arbitrary, mismatched teams in the name of social correctness,” this is where I encountered the word.

http://elupton.com/2009/10/why-collaborate/

When I first encountered the word arbitrary, I used context clues but I still did not understand the word. I then searched up the term on www.merriam-webster.com and got its definition. Two definitions came up, but the second one was most appropriate. However, the definition basically means by random selection or random choice. The author of the article is voicing her opinion on random selections of groups. She is saying that she dislikes arbitrary because she will feel more comfortable, with a group that she selected rather than one that was forced upon her.

Activist

Activist: (noun) a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/activism

” Examples of his work would be his history of being an attorney and later following his brother’s footsteps and becoming a president. He deserves to be memorialized because he was an activist, often called a carpetbagger.”

Although this isn’t my first time encountering this word I still don’t fully know the definition. This time I encountered the word while reading a fellow college post on part one of the second project. I think it’s important to know what this word means because it can be a person who can have a huge impact not only in the U.S but the entire world. Not to be confused with the adjective version of there word there are 2 definitions or the word activist. There’s an adjective definition which is campaigning to bring about political or social change. In this context the word was used to describe a person. Understanding a word means knowing the different ways it can be used. An example of how it an be used as an adjective would be, “activists groups around the world are coming together to organize certain events.” After learning the definition I understand that my colleague was using the noun version of the word and not the adjective.

Commission

Commission: (Noun) an authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts.

“Design world legends Lorraine Wild, Louise Sandhaus, and Rick Valicenti recently formed the trans-continental partnership Wild LuV, which is allowing them to work together and tackle big commissions that draw on all of their talents (https://www.wildluv.com/)”

While I was reading the essay by Ellen Lupton “Why Collaborate” I happened to stumble upon the word “commission”. While I was reading the sentence the word was placed in, i was at a lost because i couldn’t make any sense out of it. The reason i couldn’t fully understand the sentence was because I thought the word “commission” meant a fee or a form of payment. So I decided to look up the word to see if my definition of the word was right. Upon looking it up I found that my definition wasn’t all that wrong seeing as it was one of the many definitions of the word; but in this context it meant something different. So as i read the definitions i found one that fits the context. In this context the sentence meant the group Wild LuV are able to tackle commands that forced them to do and act in a manner they didn’t wish to. It also crossed my mind that it might also portray Wild LuV tackling commissions of others.

Atrocities

Atrocities: (Noun) an extremely wicked or cruel act, typically one involving physical violence or injury.

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/atrocities

“In a sense this project is also a history lesson in of itself and bringing the actions of these people to light is what society should do to show that people should be remembered for the good things they have brought to the future rather that of just a man who found someplace just to commit atrocities to a group of people and ruin their daily lives.”

I came across the word “atrocities” while reading one of my colleagues posts on their reflection on project 2. I read the sentence carefully and gained an understanding from the context clues. The person was speaking on how people brought good things to the future, and the key word that helped me was “rather”. Once the word rather was stated I knew a statement would be opposite of someone doing good. Before looking up the actual definition I looked up synonyms relating to the word atrocities and words such as “cruelty, abuse, horror, and abomination” came up. This word can be used to describe a terrible act committed by someone. For example, ” The penalty is only given to a criminal who committed several atrocities.” Remember an atrocity is a noun so you can use it to describe a person place or thing.

Critiques

Critiques (noun): a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc.

Link: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/critique?s=t

The word critiques was found in the Project #2; the Monument Surveying

“Offer and receive critiques, and use them to improve your work product.” Found on page 2.

When I encounter the word critiques, I thought of criteria but when I put the word in, it doesn’t sound right. I realize criteria doesn’t help you improve your work like the second part of the sentence. I thought of another word, criticism. When I plug the word in, it makes sense and when I look it up, I was right. Came to think about it, the word critiques gave some club of the meaning like crit and also the last part of the sentence. We can only receive criticism to improve our paper.

This word was located on the back of the page of  (New York City College of Technology : English Department) on paragraph F . The first sentence of Mechanics.

While I was waiting for my CST class, I had some time to go over the NYC College of Technology : English Department syllabus .  In the first page , I didn’t have any trouble with the reading, I fully understood the first page. However , when  I turned the page over , I wasn’t having trouble until I stumbled upon this word “Impede” . I tried using context clues  to figured it out by myself and the answer that  came to my mind was “hinder”.  Wasn’t sure about that answer, so I went online to get a precise definition .  Once I learned the definition , and I had a better understanding of the word .

Terminology

Terminology: (Noun) The technical or special terms used in a business, art, science, or special subject.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/terminology

“Throughout the semester, we will place a great deal of importance on defining words, both terminology that will help us describe, analyze, and discuss our reading and writing, and vocabulary that will help us better understand the material we encounter.”

When i first encountered the word Terminology on the glossary project outline paper sheet i didn’t fully knew the meaning of the word. To try to get a better understanding of the expression i tried to break it into syllables. I broke The word into three “Term”, “in” and “ology”. I knew the denotation for “term” was “a word or phase used to describe a thing or to express a concept”. So using the definition of “term” i figured out the word “Terminology” was a word or phrase used to describe a thing or to reveal a concept. Knowing that wasn’t the correct definition i looked up the word. after doing so i got the true definition above. Knowing the proper definition i realized that throughout the semester a great deal of importance will be place on defining a body of words used with a particular technical application in a subject of study, business or art to help us better understand the material we encounter.
