Lower Manhattan Revival

Summary: This article is about the changes that Lower Manhattan has had since the terrorist attack of 9/11. After the tragedy and the destruction the city was faced with having all this space and not knowing how to honor all the people we lost and how to restore it back to its glory. Ultimately the World Trade Center went from a strictly work centered area to this new mecca full of rebirth whether its art, culture, business, or simply a place to feel connected to the ones we lost.

Communication Problem: The photos should communicate the change that the article is talking about. Instead of shots of the new building show the diversity of the area.
Image Ideas: rat’s eye sidewalk views, shots by the memorial, reflective shots of the buildings

The Lower Manhattan Revival

  1. Summary:– The articles spoke about the rebuild of the World Trade Center. How there was a period for mourning, patriotism and cleaning up; later a period of what to do with it. Also how the rebuilding it was a way to show terrorists that they haven’t won. The new World Trade is now called “the most secure office building in America.” The article also compared the old World Trade to the new. Now it is more modern and population have tripled; it’s no longer an quiet area with people going home at six o’clock but now a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, vibrant business district with a diverse group of tenants and a lot of creative, Millennial-type workers.
  2. Communication Problem: How the new One World Trade Center is more modern and lively. It is the place to be with a variety of things to do. However, there is still a memorial to remember all the lives that was lost during the tragedy and to never forget what happened on 9/11.
  3. Image Ideas: The shiny new details of new building. Crowded street around the area. Flowers of the World Trade Center Memorial.
  4. Results: I love how geometric my photo came out. Also how the lighting is on the ceiling and it’s brightest where you see the new World Trade Center.

Topic Two: The Lower Manhattan Revival

Summary: This article focuses on the rebirth of New York City’s fallen gem, the World Trade Center. Before the 9/11 attacks, the World Trade Center not only served as New York’s pride and joy, but they represented the pinnacle of a successful business expanse. Nicknamed “the center of the universe”, the World Trade Center and the neighborhood around it was glowing with new opportunity and hope. Nevertheless, the article goes on to discuss the financial and economic growth that gradually emerged after the attacks. The most interesting quote I read from this article was from the father of a fallen firefighter, Lee Ielpi, who stated,” Not rebuilding something big would in some way show these terrorists that they had succeeded in some way.”

Communication Problem: We need to communicate that Manhattan has developed much more than where it was just a short 15 years ago. As a matter of fact, the article shows that the number of people living in Lower Manhattan has tripled.

Image Ideas: An active metropolis. Feet quickly walking along the sidewalks in abundance. A sunset representing that there will always be beauty despite the tragedy of past events.

Results: I’m extremely pleased with my results. The weather was ideal for taking photos outside and I tried by best to take full advantage of it. My objective was to show the residential side of Lower Manhattan, since the article stressed the resident population increase since 2001. I took many photos of people doing things that you wouldn’t expect in Lower Manhattan. I saw people reading books, walking their chickens (yes, I saw that), and buying from street vendors.

But when I saw an ice cream truck, I knew it had great potential to accompany the article “The Lower Manhattan Revival”. I stayed in front the ice cream truck for at least 15 minutes waiting for the perfect moment. For the second image, I used a photo of two gentlemen playing chess. After most of the class went back to City Tech, I pointed my camera at John, one of the chess players. He turned to his opponent and joked,” If I had a dollar for every time someone took a photo of me I’d be rich.” After he finished his match, I went up to him and asked to play against him with a dollar in my hand. I ended up playing chess with John for at least an hour.

Lower Manhattan Revival Summary

Summary: The article speaks of how the lower district of Manhattan has recovered in various ways in the years after the September 11th attacks, such as neighborhoods in the area becoming wealthy destinations for businesses, while also tackling the issue of how the site was repurposed by the officials who owned the land; and how they negotiated with the estates of the victims to make sure the memory and respect was preserved.

Communication Problem:

The Manhattan of today is far different than the Manhattan of fifteen years ago. How does one reconcile the destruction of 9/11 with the reconstruction effort, and how does one show how business has returned to the area without forgetting the tragedy that came before.

Image Ideas: There will definitely be a visit to the 9/11 memorial site. Other historical sites nearby, as they are today, are also compelling possibilities.

Results: While the ideal of reconciling the past and present was applicable to the project, it was not so overt as to include the harshness of the attacks that brought down the Twin Towers. There was an emphasis on showing how lower Manhattan has changed utterly to being a place of living in the wake of disasters, of families going about their days and people going about the city with their pets.

Topic 2 – The Lower Manhattan Revival

Summary: At 1,776 Ft. One world Trade Center stands as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Erect as a memorial to a horrid tragedy it graced the Lower Manhattan skyline as a representation of the fallen Twin Towers. Never-the-less this stately building also serve as a  tourist attraction, foster business ventures and adds to the rebirth of vibrant life in Lower Manhattan. Even though there were disagreements over the venture of rebuilding, the grieving families were able to reach an ideal agreement with developers to rebuild. Thus, a place that should have been seen only as a mourning ground was transformed into a memorial monument that speaks volume of the true American spirit-we are resilient, we shall rise again.

Communication Problem: The image should capture and show the diversity yet harmony of the area (business, culture, ethnicity). It should also capture the memorial symbol thereby emphasizing the emotional aspect of an area under continually healing. The vibrant life that emerged as a result of revival and rebirth should be showcase as well.

Image Ideas: Lively and energetic composition of Infrastructure and overall area, shot at different angles. Urban aspect of neighborhood life. Essential shots of One World Trade Center Monument.

Results: The photo shoot in my estimation was a success. I was able to capture images that show the building/revival of the area. Although the shoot took place around the anniversary of that great tragedy, the revival spirit could be seen in the various form of life and livelihood that makes up that area.

Topic 2. The Lower Manhattan Revival

Summary: The article talks about significant changes in Lower Manhattan after the unforgivable tragedy of September 11. The new One World Trade Center represents all phases of dealing with a tragedy: mourning, accepting the continuation of life, planing the future, learning to become better, proving to yourself and other the power of resilience.  Changes happened not only in the neighborhood’s landscape, but in the population it occupies. Down town Manhattan became a vibrant part of the city not an offices area alone. The new One World Trade Center serves as part of  the healing process of the area, the city and the nation. It shows that people and our country need and can resolve.
Communication problem: The image should show harmony between busy, urban neighborhood and  silence memorial complex. Improving area exist next to “peoples pain”. The ability of resolving however hard it is. Human happiness next to emotional past.
Image Ideas: Dynamic composition of architecture, interesting and unexpected angles, emotions of neighbors. Contrast between 2 different places existing next to each other. The new One World Trade Center  as a symbols of the emotional resolve of American people.

Results:  It was hard to choose an image. I selected two different  photos which in my opinion represent the article in the best way. First image shows a bag with working  tools and at the background we can see the museum of 9/11 next to other store signs. For getting such an angle I almost lied down on the ground and the result had justified itself. The font face reminds me of a store sign and I think it complements the photo well.  Second photo communicates in a different tone. In the middle we can see a delivery guy in red short walking with red flowers. Red color looks festive and noticeable and I think it can symbolize result of the emotional resolve of American people. I enjoyed the class trip a lot and I am happy with my photo results.

Utility vs Utopia

This article discusses the different experiences College has to offer. Whether it is solely to prepare you to join the work force and take on a career or if it is to build your soul. While Utility U is an investment where the customer (student) is paying the consumer (university) to prepare them and give them the skills they need Utopia U shows you to find your own answers.
The images should communicate the vast difference between the two. The stuffy and conformed Utility U to the enlightening Utopia U.
For my images I chose to show students in a row solely focused on their computers and not their surroundings and then I shot 2 students deep in conversation on the steps.

Topic 2, The Lower Manhattan Revival

  1. The old Lower Manhattan and the old World Trade Center once was a quiet neighborhood filled with working class people working 9-5. It was considered a “parents” or “grandparents” Lower Manhattan. But now, Lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center is described as having diverse tenants and being a “24 hour, seven-day a week” type of neighborhood now. By rebuilding the World Trade Center, it attracted many different people to move around the area; and now it is probably one of the most attractive parts of Manhattan. It will take New Yorkers some getting used to; people have different opinions about the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. In the article it states that they had to bring commerce back into the city and they had to show their strength but also they will have failed if people forget why they have rebuild it in the first place.
  2. The images in the article are just showing the World Trade Center and the Manhattan skyline. The article is talking about people having different opinions about the rebuilding, why they are rebuilding, and the difference from before and now. The images should be before and after photos, images of people living there, the fire fighters father they spoke about, etc.
  3. In my opinion, before and after photos of how the streets used to be quiet and empty compared to now, when it is more lively “24 hour” neighborhood. The article also described the memories that happened on 9/11, maybe that could’ve been shown as well. I felt like the article tried to connect emotionally to 9/11 but were not successful through the images.

Results:  With my images i tried to emotionally connect people and ground zero. There are also many pictures i did take of people on the street, trying to focus on the diversity of the neighborhood. Also, what represents ground zero; american flag, flowers, people, etc.

What is the Point of College?

Some ideas to execute Utility U. vs Utopia U would be the whole environment that is expressed, by including color and lighting that will help create an appropriate representation.

In my opinion, Utility involves the investment of Education. Without that structure and that usefulness you won’t be able to pursue what it is you need to pursue. My vision for this would be an environment that is dull of color, clean, and very office-spaced. Demonstrating that there is not much color in this vision, but just planned and non-creative atmosphere. The model to me is focused, not paying attention to anything but showing that pressure of what they have to achieve. The model will be probably standing, up right (sort of like a robot) completing daily tasks. The model might be set in a dull area, nothing really happening, nothing in the photograph can grab your attention but the idea of using education as an object, but not as a passion.

While, Utopia U is stands for freedom. The ability to experiment and be educated in a non-pressured location, where you will feel safe to be open-minded and not constricted on your ideas. For me, Utopia U is more spiritual because not only do you grow in your field, but you grow as a person. I would do photographs, that show the person enjoying their time learning about what they want to learn. Where they feel respected and in a comfortable environment. It looks colorful. The model might be enjoying their time, having fun while learning. Making mistakes in a fun vibrant environment. In result, these images turned out effectively and demonstrated the differences between these two Universities.

Utopia U and Utility U

1.Summary:-when working with a text, briefly state the most important points of the article. If an advertising campaign, describe the product. (What is Utopia U and what does it mean vs Utility U  how they work in life , in College.)
2.Communication Problem: What should be communicated by the images that accompany this article or will be used in this campaign? (Environment with person. Something what is relates to utility U or Utopia U.)
3.Image Ideas: List at least two image ideas. You can also include other photographers’ images with credit as examples or sketches. (Utopia U can be shown on image a lot of lite on a desk top and happy person studying. Utility U person working on computer`s  key board)

4.Results: How did it turn out? (It turned out very well Utopia U works very well on image the same as Utility U)
