A Letter to my Professor

Dear Professor Blain,

This was certainly one of my more interesting classes that i had so far, i personally didn’t start out too hot and the missed days did not make that any better for me but all in all i felt that it was the first English class ever in which i could actually write in the messy way that i am comfortable with and i really appreciated that because i dint feel like i was bound by the same format that i had to follow all my life. I am unsure if that was good for me however as i feel that my future professors will want me to go back to that old format but i am certainly happy that you provided that freedom for me because i never did like writing because of all of its rules but you said screw the rules just say whats on your mind no matter how it comes out and i really appreciated that so much. I will certainly take away from this class that despite me not ever liking writing, i will always think back to the short time period in which i actually felt comfortable writing. I am also forever grateful for the new things i learned such as writers block because it will further confuse me down the line but i know having it introduced to me will only make me a better writer will strive to try and learn these skills better, I also need work on citing but that’s another story. My view on writing has remained the same because i know that there are still so many forms out there so i will always feel confused and bound to rules of writing but i really thank you for providing me with a sense of security in the way i think and being able to actually present something in that format.

Sincerely,

Emilio

Revision

Revision: I tried to emphasize my points of how much more dangerous cheating is in boxing and trying to develop my evidence to tie back to my initial topic of cheaters within the history of boxing. I also added a conclusion to tie all of my claims and ideas together to solidify this individual report on cheaters in boxing.

Boxing Scandals

Many times throughout the history of boxing, many individuals have tried to reach the top of the ranking lists through cheat and deception, tainting the sport of boxing.

BIlly Collins Jr. v.s Luis Resto Controversy

Welterweights Luis Resto (20-8-2, eight KOs) and Billy Collins Jr. (14-0-0, 11 KOs) faced each other at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of the Roberto Duran-Davey Moore bout.  To pretty much everyone’s surprise, journeyman-fighter Resto won a 10-round unanimous decision.

Suspicions aroused by the devastating injuries his son suffered to his face in general and eyes in particular, trainer Billy Sr. found an opportunity to examine Resto’s gloves, noting their thinness.  The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) confirmed the father’s suspicions, determining that someone had removed at least an ounce of padding from the gloves.

Thus, the Resto-Collins match was essentially a one-sided, bare-fisted beat down.

My Analysis: It was very sad reading something like this and witnessing a crime happening within a sport i cherish so much. Billy Collins was a rising prospect that despite fighting a basically bear-fisted man, he did not get knocked out at any point. It really puts into perspective how he could have become a legend for boxing. People like Luis Resto deserve to be in jail for their whole life because they are putting other fighter’s lives in danger.

Luis Resto vs. Billy Collins Jr. – The Sweet Science turned sour

Sugar Shane Mosley

Article: NEW YORK — “Sugar” Shane Mosley told a grand jury in 2003 that he injected himself with the doping agent EPO as he prepared for a fight against Oscar De La Hoya, according to court transcripts and doping calendars reviewed by the New York Daily News.

My reaction: It’s very sad when professionals openly admit to cheating and have no repercussions. In the boxing world, an athlete that admits to PED use only gets a 6 month ban and that is a very minor punishment for an athlete that is enhancing their body to give them an unfair advantage on a world stage and competition. I believe that they should have a far harsher punishment for these offences.

Conclusion:

I believe cheating will never truly be eliminated from sports as athletes will always give up their images in order to make more money and giving themselves unfair advantages which in turn puts the life of another man at risk. I hope that one day they will see the consequences that their actions can do, in order to one day prevent another case like Billy Collins Jr.

Authors Statement

The audience that I chose for my speech were young up and coming boxers working out at a gym. I believe that in catching them when they are just starting out allows for them to not fall into the use of steroids and the need to want to cheat. I believe that with my words and my examples i can instill a good nature in them that will motivate them to achieve their goals the right way and what the consequences of cheating on another man’s life can be, especially with how unforgiving boxing can be. I chose a speech to convey my ideas because i believe it can motivate anyone to do the right thing and motivate them to work hard for their dreams. When boxers are in their corners during a bout, their trainers tend to give motivational speeches in order to rile them up and get them to perform better and i wanted to convey that idea with my speech in order for it to reach them better. I had some trouble coming up with the correct words for motivation and iwas able to go online to look for synonyms that would allow me to use more effective words to help them feel better about themselves. I believe my speech turned out well and i feel that if i were the one receiving the message id feel motivated to achieve my dreams and remain clean throughout my career if i made it to the pros. I would have liked to create a pamphlet because it might have conveyed my message better if i added visuals for the athletes to look at and really reflect on the sort of person they’d want to be.

Remix Project: Speech at a boxing gym

Young athletes, you are at the bloom of an illustrious career. Some of you might decide to go pro and the rest will stay at the amateurs and that is perfectly fine because at the end of the day this sport is very brutal. However, no one can ever be entitled to giving themselves and unfair advantage in a sport as brutal as boxing. So many cases of PED abuse and even plaster in boxing gloves have tainted the beautiful sport that is boxing and its because of how brutal this sport is that we can not tolerate it further for any reason. We can go back to the infamous bout between rising prospect Billy Collins Jr. and Luis Resto. The fight went the distance and in the end Luis had beaten Billy to a bloody pulp leaving him with very horrible damage. It was discovered that Luis and his staff ha removed the padding from his gloves, Billy was being hit with bear fists for 12 straight rounds. He suffered permanent partial blindness which ended his career. This sport should not be taken lightly and most certainly should not have people like this that just want to hurt anither man and possibly take his life. Follow your dreams the right way and cement your legacy between the greats and not between the cheaters of this sport because as soon as you are labeled a cheater, your career is over and there is no salvation from that. You guys are young and ripe and i know all of you have the potential to be great, just do it the right way and not on a path of deception, thank you and have a blessed day and workout.

Analysis: There is always going to be controversy within sports, but as long as the proper repercussions are given there wont be as much cheating with the sweet science that is boxing. The use of steroids can greatly taint a great fighters career as it also ruins their legacy and status. I hope that at some point, there will no longer be any sort of cheating within boxing in order for the fans to just enjoy the sport and not have to worry about unfair advantages.
