View of The World From 9 Avenue

This map was from a cover drawing from the New Yorker on March, 29, 1976. I think this Is considered a map because it illustrated a variety of things and like buildings that are in the city specially in 9th Avenue. It also shows its surroundings. For example it shows the Hudson River, the Pacific Ocean , Mexico, Canada and even some states that surround New York City. In fact is a map but in my opinion  its a unique map  because the drawer Saul Steingber illustrated this map with his point of view. For example, if You see 9th Avenue and even 10th Avenue everything is so exact and big enough for everyone to analyze. Thus, everything that is passing the Hudson River becoming smaller and smaller. Jersey is just a narrow long line and cities like Kansas City, Texas, Chicago are smaller that 9th Avenue. Canada and Mexico are blank with only their names written on them to tell their even there. The inaccuracies of the smaller places probably mean that for the drawer maybe the places like jersey or Kansas City are not s important as the City is. Therefore, for Steingber in the point of view of 9th Avenue everything else is small and is has less significance. Its tittle  “View of The World From 9th Avenue” tells me that I could be write that the author is trying to tell us that once your in 9th avenue everything else seems less. The New Yorker is a magazine that mostly covers topics of New York City  this topic was Steinberg V. Columbia Pictures so probably they went for a picture of Steinberg because in the article Steinbergs drawing was the best or the reason of the conflict.

View of the World from 9th Avenue, 1976

“View of the World from 9th Avenue” is a map that shows Saul Stein berg viewpoint of New York City. Saul Stein berg illustrates 9th ave,10th avenue, Hudson River, and New Jersey . He is accurate when he illustrates 9th and 10th avenue with surrounding buildings and a lot of people and cars in the area. But he shows the Hudson River and New Jersey so close by 9th and 10th avenue and that’s inaccurate because if your standing in that location you cant see that location. I understand by the title of the map that he was just trying to illustrate what he sees 9th avenue as. He just added the other locations as a vantage point. The New Yorker Magazine is a with articles, reportage, essays  criticism, cartoons, etc. I understand why this map would be on the cover of the magazine because it is illustrating how Stein berg is showing people about the New York way of life.

Library Session

For the library session on 10/2/13 we went to the fourth floor library of City Tech. We went to a room in the second floor of the library that was pretty big . We also sat with our groups to work together in two readings. We were supposed to analyze this reading carefully and see what were some credible details about the readings and what were some bias details about them too. After that Ms. Smail showed us how to do a good research using the theatre fire as an example. We started looking for research through Google and also through the Ursula library website. She explained how we was able to access to books through the website but we MUST have our library card activated first. Therefore, we have a easier access to books from the library. There were thousands of books in the Ursula library and un top of that if we weren’t able to find a book in our library and any Cuny library has the book we can make the book be sent to our library which I found fascinating! This Library session was very helpful because now we have more experience finding  good credible information t use in our research and future researches.

“View of the World from 9th Avenue” by Saul Steinberg

During the great age of exploration and sailing the map of the world changed every few years or so with return of ships from lands unknown. However it was nearly impossible to get any of them to line up correctly. Each nation had its own measuring systems and methods for map making. Also every cartographer was different in terms of skill, quality and knowledge. Also the earliest of these men had to be brave and/or stupid to sail toward the edge of the world. These notion was also not helped by the fact that most maps had mythical sea creatures draw on the edges where there was open water.

So it goes without saying that the map of the view from 9th avenue would also be something that you should not wholeheartedly follow, especially on sailing ship by thinking that the river would get you to the Pacific. From the image we get the sense that Manhattan is filled with people, cars and is as large or large then the rest of the USA. Jersey appears to be a line in the sand separating the rest of the world from us along with the Hudson River. Canada and Mexico look exactly the same, blank and no features whatsoever. the Pacific Ocean looks only slightly larger than the Hudson River and across it we see Russia, China and Japan. Small world indeed.

So other than what is seen in Manhattan everything is out of scale and out of view. Even if you could get into outer space you still would not be able to see Russia, China and Japan positioned above 9th Avenue for the same reason that you will not fall off the edge of the Earth, gravity. gravity is the reason why the Earth is round and therefore does not have an edge anywhere. Excuding cliffs, canyons, and other land formations where there is an actual edge that you can fall off.

The New Yorker is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry. It reviews and events listings often focus on the cultural life of New York City.  It is well known for its illustrated and often topical covers

View of the World from 9th Avenue

The cover of View of the World from 9th Avenue portrays how vantage points can lead you to view something very differently. In this cover, it is basically a map which has important things after 9th avenue in New York City. These important things include 10th avenue, The Hudson River, New Jersey and the Pacific Ocean. This is an illustration because these things aren’t actually visible if you stand in 9th avenue. This is also a vantage point that doesn’t show what’s on the opposite side of 9th avenue. This illustration is what the author knows is beyond 9th avenue although it isn’t actually visible. The author might be insinuating that the city blocks off many views that we would benefit from viewing. The inaccuracies in this cover is that you obviously can’t see these things from 9th avenue. I understand that the map is portraying a view from 9th avenue. The New York Magazine was an issue that had this cover at the front. It was important for this illustration to be the cover because it was discussing the case of Steinberg vs Columbia Pictures Industries.

“View of the World from 9th Avenue”

My first impression from looking at this cover for The New Yorker that was published March 29th 1976, is that this person had one view and one view only it seemed. We all know that there is much surrounding the city of New York, but this author seemed to exclude every other part of the world as far as detail is concerned. From 9th Avenue to the Hudson River, you can see every car, person, building, and even shadow. This is accurate  even down to the Westside Highway. Once your eyes cross the river, there is nothing but decollate land. There is nothing except for some large rocks and it almost seems as if New York just from 9th Avenue is about the same size as the rest of the world which we know is very inaccurate. This means, to me, that the write is very bias to New York and doesn’t think much of the rest of the world from how he portrayed it. From the title, I expected to see maybe a photograph or an illustrated drawing of a block from a 9th Avenue view. I did not expect this playfully one-sided drawing done with pencils, pen, and water color. I am not familiar with the magazine though. If I was I would have know that The New Yorker only uses Artists entries as their covers. Most are puns and are poking fun at some time-appropriate political/social commentary.

Library Double Session

I wasn’t aware we were writing summaries on last Wednesday’s until I logged onto OpenLab today and came across all these postings. I do not want to be late on another assignment so, last Wednesday we went to visit the Ursula Schwerin Library on the 4th floor of the Atrium building at City Tech. I have never really been one for libraries and can’t really say I am not, but I did realize the library can be used a very helpful tool in getting the best grades possible while I have it at my disposal. Ms. Smail started off the tour by stopping our group right in the middle of the entire library pointing out where we can access computers, where we can print, and where we can get help. She made it very know that in order to do anything in the library you first, must activate your school ID to be library accessible. We continued from there to the second floor which has rows and rows of bookshelves. It was no wonder considering that there aren’t many on the first floor. We were lead into a small classroom in the corner of the section. Here the first thing i noticed was that there were somewhat high-tech computers and that shows me that the school is dedicated to helping kids learn in more interesting and fun ways. I had fun with the computer. Once there we were given two articles to analyze and decide which was more credible. This was not easy considering that there are a lot of factors that come into play when deciding this. We came to the conclusion that the one that was put together by many experts and was published is more credible than the newspaper article written by one person. We then went on to search on our own for information about the Brooklyn Theater fire. There wasn’t much in our directory but when you widen your search to all the CUNY libraries, your chances for finding something are much better. All you have to do is request the book and they have it shipped right to your campus. This will be a very helpful tool in research.
