Project #5- Summary

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the beautiful landmarks in New York. Built by so many workers with so much hard work this bridge is the one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. According to the World Steel Association it’s the first steel wire bridge ever built in the whole world. It is 1,595 feet long. The designer of this bridge John Roebling died because of a foot injury which leaded to an infection. His son Washington Roebling then took over the work but unfortunately died later on also from a disease. This bridge stands out to most attractive tourist sites in New York. There have been many stories of people who jumped from the bridge. Films have also been shot on the bridge. Giorgio Pessi piloted a Caproni Ca.5 under the bridge. The bridge has also had anniversary celebrations which held for about 5 days. Many American poets also use to Brooklyn Bridge in their poetry. As of being New Yorkers we should have some knowledge of the bridge and of other famous historical buildings our states has. We should also go visit these historical areas instead of leaving them abandoned and also enjoy the beauty our state has.

Class Summary Speech, 10/4

On October 4th, in the class Speech-1330 taught by Professor Davis, was the day of the speech midterm. Which to my surprise was a documented multiple choice exam because I was expecting The Midterm consisted of questions in chapters 1-6 of the textbook. The test was a bit rough for me because I was not ready for the way Professor Davis worded the answer choices and I think I could speak for a good portion of the class. I must admit thought I didn’t spend too much time studying and I ended up biting the bullet. But, Professor Davis, being the nice guy that he is, sees that the entire class average was a mere 49% decided to boost everyone’s test grade by 20 points because he saw that the entire class was putting in a respectable amount of work into our class blog. When I was finished I caught up with people who had already finished the test and almost everyone said that the wording answer choices were the biggest problem and were the most confusing. In conclusion, my speech midterm was on October 4th and it surely caught me off guard along with some of my friends but thanks to Professor Davis boosting our grade by 20 points I had a better grade than I would’ve hope for.

Letter-Advice for students

Dear upcoming students,

What comes to mind when you see the title Being in Brooklyn? Maybe it means how life is in Brooklyn or maybe looking deeply in Brooklyn right? Since our college is in Brooklyn it doesn’t mean you know everything about it, but after taking these two classes you will feel you were raised here and you know every single thing about it. In these two classes Effective Speaking (Professor Davis) and English 1101 ( Professor Rosen) you will be seeing new sites that you never saw or knew about in Brooklyn and learning so many new things about Brooklyn. I myself didn’t know that much but now I can tell Brooklyn is a more enjoyable borough then Queens. You will also get to know your fellow classmates since both classes are combined classes. You will learn a lot about places like The Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Columbus park, Brooklyn Historical Society etc.  The professors also take you on a walking tour around City Tech which was really fun because I got to see many new things and landmarks I never saw before. The work that you would do like essays and summaries are posted here on Open Lab so there cant be any excuse that your ink ran out. Just kidding its better posting it here then wasting paper. I would recommend that you guys should do your work and not procrastinate a lot because it will be a burden on you since you we have 5 projects to complete in English class. In Effective Speaking you will be doing a few speeches and your fear of talking in front of a class will be gone because its the same students in both classes and hopefully you all will be friends with each other. The professors are great and you will have a great time with them. If you are having a problem you can contact them and they will help you out with something. Well I hope you guys have a good time in these classes.

Summary of Project 4

The Brooklyn Banks is a three block area under the Brooklyn Bridge. It consists of various ledges, stairs, rails and barriers. However what it is most known for is the sloped architecture that surrounds the entrance of the bridge on the Manhattan side. It is most popular among skaters to a point which John Branch, of The New York Times, calls it a “skate mecca”.  Brooklyn takes credit for developing skating in the east coast and giving it a broader perspective on what is possible. With much love from the “under-ground”, the city did not recognize this place as significant to anyone. In November of 2004, the city decided the Banks would look nicer if it were green and was a park. Many people were outraged, especially Steve Rodriguez, a Bank skater since 1983 and owner of 5boro skateboards. He disputed their decision to tear down the banks. In an interview by The New York Times, by Justin Porter, Rodriguez says “If you’re going to make some changes, you should work with the people who use the space.”  Rodriguez ended up saving the park from destruction but was then closed again in 2010 for bridge maintenance. This task is rumored to be completed sometime in 2014 but nothing is certain.

Advice to incoming student

Hello, to the next student sitting in this seat. You are not in high school anymore, stay focused on what is important and try your hardest not to slip up in the beginning because that is only going to make it that much harder for you to pass. This class is not only a mandatory class but also a way to better get to know your city. It’s a very fun class that teaches you how to efficiently soak up information from data bases and how to properly cite them in your work. You even get to take a good amount of trips out of class to the library, to tour Brooklyn, and a place called the Brooklyn Historical Society or BHS. A few suggestions from me would be that make sure you do your work on time and do not let anything get in the way of you doing your work. You also want to write down the work you have to do on your phone that way you will not forget and specific details of each assignment. With these similar classes your work guidelines for each assignment can get confusing. Also remember to keep track of when you are supposed to write a summary of the class because it will pass right by and you won’t know what to write or might not do it at all. From the day you get the glossary assignment make sure to complete that as soon as possible and get that out of the way so you can have a clearer mind on the more heavily weighted assignments. Overall if you stay on top of your work and ask questions you should not have a hard time passing the class. The teachers are not going to ask for anything impossible from you so don’t worry.

A Wise Advice

As a freshmen coming into City tech, I was nervous but soon that nervousness turned into excitement when I got my syllabus of my ENG 1101 class. The reason for my excitement was when I saw all the things we were going to do where going to be fun because the class was going to work on a course that was fun and interesting. The course was called “Being in Brooklyn”. Now I was in Learning community which meant that my ENG 1101 and SPE 1130’s class work will over lap. This added to the fun even more and life easier. This ENG 1101 class will help us enhance you skills of writing long essay to short summaries and also reading. This class also helps you in doing your research more easily and also how to research in more credible ways. In this course called being in Brooklyn you guys will learn about the neighborhood of city tech and also learn a lot about rest of the Brooklyn. This course will cover some interesting sorties of past so be ready to learn some amusing facts. In this class we used one word almost everyday,”Location”. Since this course requires you to do a lot of research on various locations so be ready to be picking a good location on which you will have to do a speech and also write an essay.  This class also requires you to go on a few walking tours, some with class and some by yourself.  These walking tours make the class very interesting and fun so be ready for a lot of walking. This class might get little challenging but than if you have professors like Professor Steve Davis and Professor Jody Rose than you will be fine. They will help you anytime and in anyway possible. Another advice will be to ask them whenever you need help and also don’t leave your until the last day. It won’t be your best work since you won’t put our full effort to the work.

Brooklyn bridge Summary

Brooklyn Bridge, This Bridge represents New York and when people think of New York, they think of the Brooklyn Bridge. This Bridge was planned and masterminded by A German born Immigrant named John A. Roebling. However before John A. Roebling could start the construction, he died when he was inspecting the site and got injured and died few days later from an infection, his son Washington  Roebling took over since he had helped his dad with the maps of the bridge. When the construction was started the hardest part was the digging the foundations.  This problem was solved wit the idea of casssions where a enormous wood box with air compressed into them with no bottom would be sunk into bottom an d workers would dig the foundation and this was dangerous work that caused a lot of illness also to Washington A Roebling leaving him paralyzed for life and his wife Emily had to take over. In this bridge the most interesting part are the 276 long towers. Adopted from the gothic architecture and made of limestone’s they add to the beauty of the Bridge. The Bridge also connects Brooklyn and Manhattan making life easier for thousand of people and helped New York to be what it is today.

Summary of Project 4

Brooklyn Bridge Park is full of history and is such a wonderful park. This is why I decided to write about it for project 4.  In my essay of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is about its past on how it used to be before, and how it is viewed today. What’s also mention on my essay is about the event when hurricane sandy hit Brooklyn Bridge Park. In Update, Brooklyn Bridge Park The author described the hurricanes attack on the park. “Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical system.” Even though the Parks neighborhood was badly damaged, Brooklyn Bridge Park stood up against the storm. It is amazing how much Brooklyn Bridge Park has changed over the years, that centuries back it was not even park just old piers. Even today it was debated if Brooklyn Bridge Park was actually a park, which In Debate Rages on Housing at Planned Brooklyn Park by Sam Roberts talks about. Well in the end, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a park and haves to be the best and biggest park in Brooklyn!

Advice for future student

Dear, Students

I was in your situation I didn’t know what to expect from college. The time does go quick! That’s your only enemy in college time! So make sure you use it wisely because you don’t want to be wasting it by getting home taking a nap, watch TV, play video games, and then last minute start to panic because you have an essay or a project due the next day. College is nothing like high school so take that off your mind. The only person who cares and should care for your education is no one but yourself! Professors are not going to be behind you and telling you to finish your hw or reminding you to read a chapter or when an assignment is due. You are going to have to be responsible for all you’re school work. Some of you may think what you already want to study for your career. Some have no idea what they want to major in and that is completely normal so don’t feel that you should know what you want to major in. Most students may think they know what they want to major in, but then after a year or so they plan to change majors. So there is no rush because you may think you know what you want but there is a chance you will change your mind, don’t take too long you want to major in though. You are going to have to try hard in college it is not like high school if you are borderline passing and your high school teacher feels sympathy and passes you with a 65. No professor will feel sympathy for your lack of work and effort, you will get what you deserve! So try your best make sure to use your school resources because they do come in handy when it comes to assignments. One of my high school teachers gave me some words of advice that I always remember, and I would like to share them with you to “It doesn’t matter where you start from, but where you finish at!”

Sincerely,

Gabriel Perez
