Project #5- Summary

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the beautiful landmarks in New York. Built by so many workers with so much hard work this bridge is the one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. According to the World Steel Association it’s the first steel wire bridge ever built in the whole world. It is 1,595 feet long. The designer of this bridge John Roebling died because of a foot injury which leaded to an infection. His son Washington Roebling then took over the work but unfortunately died later on also from a disease. This bridge stands out to most attractive tourist sites in New York. There have been many stories of people who jumped from the bridge. Films have also been shot on the bridge. Giorgio Pessi piloted a Caproni Ca.5 under the bridge. The bridge has also had anniversary celebrations which held for about 5 days. Many American poets also use to Brooklyn Bridge in their poetry. As of being New Yorkers we should have some knowledge of the bridge and of other famous historical buildings our states has. We should also go visit these historical areas instead of leaving them abandoned and also enjoy the beauty our state has.

Letter to Future Student

Dear future student, the learning community is great for freshman. I found that the course was much easier and helpful than my other classes since it is designed for new students. Especially since Professor davis and Professor Rosen are so helpful to the class. In the Being in Brooklyn course you will learn many new skills to improve your writing. It was also helpful for me spending one on one time with Professor Rosen going over my work for improvement, which i suggest you do. The course focuses on Brooklyn. The readings and essays you will be writing are all about Brooklyn, so if you are not from here you will become really familiar with Brooklyn. I also learned a lot in speech class about how to give an organized speech which will be very useful to you throughout college and later on in life. If You are a shy person like i am you will not be comfortable at first but that changes over time. Do not stress over this like i did, which effected my grade in a negative way. Especially since professor Davis is a really friendly and tries to make you feel comfortable. During the semester we took two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society. We learned many things and had access to Brooklyn history. On our way there we had a walking tour which was a great way for us to learn about the neighborhood. Especially for those of us who are not from Brooklyn. My advice to you is to take advantage of the opportunities these two courses offer. The two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society are a great experience and you should attend them. Also, speech class offers you a chance to come out of your shell and loose the fear of speaking in front of large groups of people. This was the number one improvement i have made since coming to college because of speech class. I hope that you enjoy these two classes and have a positive experience like i did.

Letter-Advice for students

Dear upcoming students,

What comes to mind when you see the title Being in Brooklyn? Maybe it means how life is in Brooklyn or maybe looking deeply in Brooklyn right? Since our college is in Brooklyn it doesn’t mean you know everything about it, but after taking these two classes you will feel you were raised here and you know every single thing about it. In these two classes Effective Speaking (Professor Davis) and English 1101 ( Professor Rosen) you will be seeing new sites that you never saw or knew about in Brooklyn and learning so many new things about Brooklyn. I myself didn’t know that much but now I can tell Brooklyn is a more enjoyable borough then Queens. You will also get to know your fellow classmates since both classes are combined classes. You will learn a lot about places like The Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Columbus park, Brooklyn Historical Society etc.  The professors also take you on a walking tour around City Tech which was really fun because I got to see many new things and landmarks I never saw before. The work that you would do like essays and summaries are posted here on Open Lab so there cant be any excuse that your ink ran out. Just kidding its better posting it here then wasting paper. I would recommend that you guys should do your work and not procrastinate a lot because it will be a burden on you since you we have 5 projects to complete in English class. In Effective Speaking you will be doing a few speeches and your fear of talking in front of a class will be gone because its the same students in both classes and hopefully you all will be friends with each other. The professors are great and you will have a great time with them. If you are having a problem you can contact them and they will help you out with something. Well I hope you guys have a good time in these classes.

Summary Of Project #4

The New York Transit Museum. For some people it is a museum, for others it can mean more than that. Court St was a train station that was located close to Borough Hall and Jay St Metro Tech, the station also had connections to other trains that went into Manhattan just like like Borough Hall, Jay St Metro Tech. Due to those other stations being placed into the convenience of the public Court St did not really had much ridership and was forced to close down, this occurred on June 1946. After being abandoned for years, the transit authority came up with the bright idea of using the Court St station has an exhibition, the exhibition consisted of showing the history of the public transportation such as buses and trains.  While the exhibition was meant to be temporary it has still continued until present day due to the increase in popularity among the people and tourists alike. With this information in mind I proceeded to pick two articles, one article was written by Edward Rothstein and in this article he describes the things that can be found on the museum. The other article was written by Melissa Noble and in this article she explains her point of view on the museum which mainly consists of facts ratter than describing the stuff that can be found on the museum.

Summary of Project 4

In the Project 4 research essay, I as the author discussed and analyzed two storied accounts in the history of the Brooklyn Bridge. These stories were the death of John A. Roebling and the Stampede of 1883. I first analyzed them and explained the stories in complete detail. Then i compared and contrasted them as this was the only way to see how different and similar these accounts are. The similarity in the two stories were that both of them resulted in huge tragedies. The death of John A. Roebling was tragic since he was the men responsible for the Brooklyn Bridge while the Stampede of 1883 resulted in the death of various human beings and put fear in everyone’s mind. However the aftermath is where the differences come in to play. The death of John A. Roebling resulted in more people dying from working on the bridge and his son becoming ill as well. More tragedy seem to come their way. In the Stampede of 1883, the deaths resulted in people testing out to see if the bridge was safe thus preventing such event from happening ever again. In the essay i stated “history can be defined as an argument on how we interpret the past” which shows how others view this differently.

BAM fire of 1903 summary

A comparison of two stories founded within the New York Times archives article Brooklyn Academy of Music Ruins. The two stories showed two different vantage points, the inside and outside during the fire in 1903. On the inside of BAM during the 1903 fire there was an explosion that ignited the stage and set off the tragic event, eventually causing the outside commotion and panic. Neighboring businesses and residents began to evacuate and flood into the streets trying to avoid the fire. The fire department came too late to try to resist the fire and prevent the building from collapsing. By the time they got there the roof had already began to collapse.  The only thing that was left after flames were putout was the two facades. Further outside the fire in the neighborhood was Hugh McLaughlin and his family having breakfast but was disrupted by friends trying to warn them that the fire was nearing. Being stubborn they didn’t leave so the fire department had to resist the fire from their home as a compromise to their decision to remain in their home. Both stories were outcomes of the fire but had two different vantage points as one talked about the inside and the other the outside.
