I encountered this word on the article ” The Happiest and Saddest Places in NYC, According to Tweeter ” by Brian Merchant. He stated ” it is the city’s veritable epicenter”

now that I understand the word I know the author meant that it was the city’s true epicenter.

Readings for Wednesday

Before Wednesday, please re-read “Who Knows Brooklyn” and “View of the World from 9th Avenue” by Saul Steinberg:

On the Saul Steinberg Foundation Web site

On Wikipedia

To help you think about Steinberg’s illustration, consider how it is a map. Some questions you should answer in your post are:

What information is accurate, and what is inaccurate?

What do the inaccuracies mean?

What do you understand about the map from its title?

What is The New Yorker magazine and why was this an appropriate cover for one of its issues?

walking in New York City

I always think New York has many personalities, sometime he is very noisy and sometime he is so quiet. When I walking on the street in Chinatown after school, I think New York is so active. People are rushing on their ways to lunch, chatting on the street corner with their friends, gossip everything on the neighborhood and few workers are on their way to deliver the goods. Lively New York is not created by the people only; there are very important thing that make New York more like New York——-subways. Whenever I walk through, under the Manhattan Bridge, the noise produce by the trains were loud enough covers my voice, and my music in my earphone.

After the sunset, the dark came and there are less and less people walking on the street. Most of the stores are closed and the whole street became much darker. When I look up the sky, I can see the bright moon among the darkness; and sometime I was lucky, I can see the airplanes fight though the sky, with the weak, little spot light. When I was in China, my hometown calls “no night city” there are always light come from the stores and people still shopping on the streets or walking after dinner. For me, walking in Chinatown at night was so lonely.

A walking in New York City

The first walk I remember taking to New York was when I was 12 or 13 , I was going ice skating and my family and friends decided to go towards Manhattan. It was an excited feeling since I never had ice skated and hadn’t gone to the city in a while. At first there were mixed feelings since we were going in the subway and I didn’t like going on the train. I had memories of the subway and its congestion and the not being able to always sit down, I always hated the subway. But when I went on it-it was actually not as bad as I thought, but afterwards it started filling up. I had to get used to it , I notice the subway was a busy transportation. When I got to the stop which was Bryant Park, we got off and as soon as I got off the subway, It was crowded. So many people walking and I had to keep close to the group. Since there were so many walking in different directions we had to walk at the speed of light, everyone was walking fast and we had to keep up. Getting out of the subway, The view was mesmerizing, So many tall building, and since we went in the afternoon we saw the sun hitting the Glass windows. So many different kind of people, some with business clothing others with jeans and sweater and many more. There were so many Stores to go Shopping. At first It was an exciting feeling but after I started getting mixed emotions, I was feeling intimidated, so many tall and good looking people , it felt like I didn’t fit in. The feeling was that i wasn’t worth being there, everyone was in a higher class than me. The Ice skating experience was a Good one, had my slips and falls, but what was really kept in my mind was the view, the places, and the People that live in Manhattan.  I do remember I had other walks before in the City but I was too young to remember, This was the memory I mostly remember of Myself and the Confrontation I had with The City that never sleeps.

A Walk In New York City

Since I was born and raised here I have been to numerous places in New York. One of my favorite places was walking around Central Park. At Central Park we walked around a lot for a good 4-5 hours and looked around to see all these activities that you can do. For example boating, fishing, etc. You also can have a mini family picnic as well. We took a lot of pictures in different parts of the park. At one of part of the park their are rocks which you can climb up and see the huge buildings. I was looking up and it seemed like i was about to fall down but luckily i didn’t. After the long day we went to get gyro from 5th ave. Their was a huge line but we managed to stand their because it was the yummiest gyro ever plus we were hungry. I recommend you guys to go to the park with family or friends because that way you guys could see the beautiful nature and spend a good quality time and make each moment memorable.

A Walk in New York City

Well since I’m born here I have seen many place’s in New York but one of my memorable moments is when I went to Times Square and Rockefeller Center at night with my sister and my aunt. It was like a dream come true for me. I always use to go in the mornings but at night its very beautiful. It was Christmas time so we went to see the tree lit up. I remember taking the F train to 47-50 street Rockefeller Center. It was very cold. There were so many people that it took us about 20 minutes to reach the area where the tree was. The tree was big and very beautiful. We took pictures and then headed toward Times Square. When we reached I was amazed by the beauty of it. After taking pictures there also we ate McDonald’s and then headed for home. I would recommend everyone to go check it out at night instead of the morning. New York City really is so fascinating that I don’t feel like going anywhere else.

City Limits Summary

In the story “City Limits”, writen by Colson Whitehead, New York is described through the author’s point of view. This playfully sarcastic character explains how everyone has their own New York because this city is always changing and you start building your own as soon as you lay eyes on the concrete jungle. He goes on to show his obessesive love for New York, claiming that since he has lived here it has ruined him to go anywhere else, but not only for what it is now but also loving the city for what it used to be through his eyes. The author still refers to buildings by their previous names because that’s how he built his New York, the same goes for the shops the took over what was once a place he liked reminiscing on his own New York. To me it seems a little depressing how he’s so attached to these shops and buildings and then they are taken down and something different is put up and he says you’re not a real New Yorker until you realize New York will keep going on without you. Even though things leave they still exist because they are part of your vision when you first built your own view of the city in your head
