“Reading Lucy” by Jennifer Egan

Jennifer Egan’s essay, “Reading Lucy” from the collection Brooklyn Was Mine conveys Egan’s relationship to Lucy Kolkin and how it develops throughout letters written by Lucy to her husband Alfred Kolkin. At the begging of the essay Egan talks about two month friendship she had with Lucy Kolking until Lucy decided to move to California. Later on in the essay we understand that by that she meant that she spent two months reading Lucys letters to her husband that joined the navy on 1944. This relationship developed because Egan was doing research on a novel  she was writing about which was about a woman who worked in Navy Yard during World War II and she came up with Lucy who also worked at the navy yard for almost two years. To help her research  she decided to read the lecture notes lucy had when she took shipfitting school. While she examine the notes she noticed lucy did to-do lists just the way she did so it intrigued her to know more about this woman. Therefore, she decided to go to BHS to read the letters BHS had archived from her when she used to write to her husband. Jennifer Egan spend 2 months reading this letters and she got so into lucys life that she felt she was there a with lucy back in 1944.  Even if she didn’t get the chance to meet Lucy it was like if she already knew her by the emotion lucy put in those letters to her husband. At the beginning when she said she got to know lucy until she moved to California she meant that that was the last time she got to read lucys letters because lucy went to live to California to be with her husband, so obviously the letters stop at that point.

Happiest and Saddest place in NYC

One of the happiest places in NYC is the park that is near my house in 85th Street. The park is really big but theres one special place that has a lagoon  and a big rock that you can sit on. its really beautiful to go there to have picnics or just to sit there with friends to have a good time. When i go to that place it brings me to a great mood because its a really nice view. Theres even ducks swimming all over  the lagoon. My saddest place in NYC  would be right by Queens Blvd because there was an accident there recently of a motorcyclist that crashed with a car and while i was passing by with my family in our car i saw the guy from the motorcycle laying down on the floor with blood all over his body it was really scary seeing him there laying down but i thought he was going to be okay but when we came back we heard he died there in that same place i saw him laying down. since that day that became the saddest place in NYC for me.

Location Choice

The location I chose is the Brooklyn Bridge. Its just a few blocks away from City Tech. Its very beautiful and taking a walk on the bridge would be a dream come true. I always heard how Brooklyn Bridge is really a place to go and see and when I found out my college is next to it I was really excited. It was opened for use on May 24, 1883 and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. That’s what I find fascinating about it. The view of the East River and The Statue of Liberty also makes it want to go there.

“You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it”. I chose this quote because even though I was born here there are many places in New York that I have not seen yet and many places are still a dream come true. Brooklyn Bridge was one of it and when I saw it made me happy and to think how beautiful New York is.

“Maybe we become New Yorkers the day we realize that New York will go on without us”. I chose this quote because when we come to New York it takes time getting around and knowing it well. As time passes by many things change. The day you see that even without you New York will go on is the day you are a New Yorker because you know how the city is changing day by day.

To get to where I came upon these overlapping buildings, You must first make your way out of the school Namn building. Next you should make a right on to Jay street. Then you must cross the street and you will arrive at Johnson ave. After arriving on Jay street on Johnson avenue, Look up diagonally from the street signs and you will find your self looking at the two buildings that are describing the juxtaposition effect.

“Our buildings still stand because we saw them, moved in and out of there long shadows, we are lucky enough to know them for a time. they are a part of the city we carry around. it is hard to imagine that something will take there place, but at this very moment the people with the right credentials are considering how to fill the craters. the cement trucks will roll up and spin there bellies, the jackhammers will rattle, and after a while the postcards of the new skyline will be available for purchase.”  “The quote is from the story City limits” from The colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead. This quote stood out to me because i feel like it describes the area of where these buildings are located. I feel that way because a lot of buildings around here are being remolded and that one red building that is being remolded stands out the most because of the tall grey building next to it.

“One day the city we built will be gone, and when it goes, we go. When the buildings fall, we topple, too.” The quote is from the story “City limits” from The colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead. The quote relates to my essay because instead of breaking down the red building and erasing all of its significant values, they are working on renovating the building to maintain not only historical values but to add modern day twist to the pre-existing building. Where as the other building in bodies this quote by representing  the new city life that will come with the existence of pre-existing/ renovating building such as the red building.
