Fulton Ferry Landing

There are many beautiful places in New York City. When we mention New York City the first thought people have is Manhattan. You should know that aside from the City, New York City has a lot of interesting things and places in all 5 boroughs. One of the most interesting boroughs is Brooklyn. Brooklyn is filled with a lot of historic places. One of them is Fulton Ferry Landing.  This was one of the first ferry services between Brooklyn and Manhattan in 1642. The restore pier was re-opened in 1997, This Ferry Landing offering visitors spectacular views of the harbor, Brooklyn Bridge and the Lower Manhattan skyline[1].

As I was walking around the neighborhood of City Tech I came up with this beautiful place where I was able to watch the Brooklyn Bridge and also a splendid view into Manhattan. To get to this place was very simple. When getting out of the main entrance of the Namm Building turn left and go straight staying in Jay Street. Then you make a left going to Prospect Street. Lastly turn right to Cadman Plaza. From there you keep on walking straight and you get to Fulton Ferry Landing. This place is very comfortable because you can just sit there and explore everything that is around you there are little chairs for you to make your experience even more amazing because you can just sit there and observe.

When I got to my point it was impressive how beautiful the view was. You can see all of Manhattan even the Statue of Liberty. The buildings were huge! The image I got to capture is good but you can capture the juxtaposition.  To admire its location you got to capture a larger image like I did. For example, by taking the picture in this point of view you are able to appreciate the contrast it has, You are able to see the left side of the Brooklyn bridge that there are a variety of unique buildings with a impressive architecture and in its right side of the bridge there’s buildings that look all the same and aren’t as big as the ones you see in the right left side. As you can see they also look old compared to the other buildings that are in the left side of the

bridge. Thus, in this case I think it did capture its juxtaposition even though it would be better to see this location in person to understand and see its juxtaposition more clearly.

I decided to pick the Fulton Ferry Landing as my topic because I find it fascinating how a place that was so important in history is still with us today. When I see this place I instantly imagine thousands of people traveling from Manhattan to Brooklyn or vice verse through this ferry landing to go to a important event in history.

“One day the city we built will be gone, and when it goes, we go.” This quote is from “City Limits”[2]. Through out this project we are learning about new places that exist in New York. there’s going to be a time were this places are going to change to new places that would be way different than what we saw the first time we looked at it and that’s when the place we knew will be gone. That’s why we should appreciate when the place we picked is still here because when is gone it would be like if a part of our life was erased.

“You start building your New York, once you lay eyes on it”[3]. This quote is also from “City Limits” it relates to my writing because I think that when I first saw Fulton Ferry Landing that was the starting point of my interest towards Fulton Ferry. Now I know this place and it became part of my life because is a memory of something new to me. Thus, the moment I first saw this place is going to stay in my memory regardless of any changes it makes in the future.

As a next step I would like to know more about the Ferry Landings history. For example, how many people were allowed to go on each ferry. Also if there was any discrimination on who was able to ride on the ferries. There’s so much that I would like to know about my location and is surroundings that am going to continue doing research about this to have more knowledge about the place I picked and become more fascinated with the things I find out that make this place even more special.

There are many historic places all over New York City. I never would have thought that Brooklyn would have as many historic places as I came to know now by enrolling to City Tech. Maybe because only few people have the time to really get know Brooklyn and explore its wonders. Thus, personally I am pretty impressed with the beauties the borough of Brooklyn has to share, especially Fulton Ferry Landing. This project helped me appreciate and examine thoroughly the history of the Fulton Ferry Landing. Therefore, now every time I visit this place am going to enjoy being there more than before because now I know perfectly were I am standing which brings me a whole lot of comfort and  happiness to my system.

Cumulative Summary For “City Limits”

In the essay “City Limits” taken from The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead, Colson expresses his idea of New York City through out his writing. Starting by the first paragraph he tells us that he was born in NYC therefore, he was ruined for anywhere else. By This he means  that like his born in NYC it already ruined the chance of him  liking any other place. For him the city is that  great that he knows for a fact theres no other place like his.

He also says New York is always changing into new things and new places but whats important  to you is how NYC is at the moment you first lay your eyes on it. That’s why you shouldn’t believe what no one tells you about the history of new York because they just telling you was THEIR New York City like not what your is. We see things as they were in our experience while others see it as they remember from their experience. His love for New York makes him see his version of New York Even though NYC is always changing it would stay the same way to you but as new people come to NYC the new places would be  their different NYC. Colson Whitehead expresses his sorrow by telling us that when places change unexpectedly you don’t get to say goodbye to them because you don’t really know when is your last time sitting on that place. That’s why is very important to remember this places before they’re gone because they are   very   important to you and is part of what makes YOUR NYC so special.

Group B “City Limits”

The story “City Limits” written by Colson Whitehead is about a guy that observes the city of New York, he explains the amazing city that he saw and that makes other cities seem very weak next to New York City. It’s a great place because when you live here there are lots of opportunities like awesome schools and amazing jobs. Everyone has their own city, based on their memories and those memories create many different “New York Cities.” Many remember New York City with old buildings and those buildings might not exist anymore but to the person who saw them, they still are there. Everyone has a different prospective of New York, everyone experienced it in a difficult way. With Colson’s description of a New Yorker is no wonder that towards the end of the reading he starts to say that once you are a inside New York you will not want to live anywhere else.

City Limits Summary

In the story “City Limits”, writen by Colson Whitehead, New York is described through the author’s point of view. This playfully sarcastic character explains how everyone has their own New York because this city is always changing and you start building your own as soon as you lay eyes on the concrete jungle. He goes on to show his obessesive love for New York, claiming that since he has lived here it has ruined him to go anywhere else, but not only for what it is now but also loving the city for what it used to be through his eyes. The author still refers to buildings by their previous names because that’s how he built his New York, the same goes for the shops the took over what was once a place he liked reminiscing on his own New York. To me it seems a little depressing how he’s so attached to these shops and buildings and then they are taken down and something different is put up and he says you’re not a real New Yorker until you realize New York will keep going on without you. Even though things leave they still exist because they are part of your vision when you first built your own view of the city in your head

City Limits Summary

In the short story, “City Limits”, by Colson Whitehead, he emphasizes how one persons New York differs from another persons. Every person has their own perspective on how they might view New York. Whitehead talks about the impact that New York has on people. He says that whether you were born in New York or just moved there, once you are there it will not compare to any other place. It might actually end up making your old town look small and uninteresting.  Whitehead makes a point that there is a certain moment when a person becomes a New Yorker and starts building their personal New York. This occurs the first time that you view the crazy city with your own eyes. Whether you were just a kid or an adult, maybe on vacation or there to stay, that moment is your first memory for you to begin building your own New York. Your New York is further enhanced when you start to grow attached to certain buildings, restaurants and shops that surround you. Over time these places might become replaced by others, but those memories will makeup your New York and forever will be there for you. “Our streets are calendars containing who we were and who we will be next”.  Whitehead is explaining how the city has watched us grow into the people we are today and how the city in the present will determine who we will be next. This city consists of old memories of the people we used to be.

Summary on City Limits

The Story City limits written by Colson Whitehead is about a guy that observes The city of New York, he explains the amazing city that he saw and that makes other city seem very weak next to New York City. He says: “The city also puts a lot of effort into making your hometown look really drab and tiny” some people may read and think like he’s talking about New York city really cocky and thinking every other city is bad. he also spoke about the first experience to go through when you visit New York city for the first time, he explains that “that’s the first brick in your city” meaning that when you visit New York, many have their first memory as a busy city and everyone walking fast and moving at the speed of light. Others may experience their first memory in New York by the View that they might see. These are some examples the Author Whitehead to demonstrate the several ways people might see the City of New York. But one thing he emphasized in was a lot and grabbed my attention was “The New York City you live in is not my New York” what he meant by it was The memories , your way of life, the way you see New York is not that way he see’s it. Many remember New York City with Old buildings and those buildings might not exist anymore but to the person who saw them, they still are there. Everyone has a different prospective of New York, everyone experienced it in a different way. At the end like that author had said Our lives might move on and we might pass away but New York will continue its daily routine, it will continue without us.

Summary of City Limits

In the story City Limits by Colson Whitehead, he talks about New York. He says how New York is so great that he doesn’t need to go anywhere else. He also states how everyone has their own view of New York and that people start to build their New York when they lay their eyes on it. Since New York changes over time and people come to New York in different times whatever they see is their New York for them. For example, he says that the Pan Am Building is now the Des Moines but in his view of New York, it will always be the Pan Am Building because it was there when he started building his own New York. Also as New York is changing over time places like the pizza store, newsstand, restaurants, movie theaters etc. have changed into new stores, buildings etc. but for him they will stay in their in his eyes. He says that things change so fast that buildings which are gone don’t even have a chance to say goodbye.

City Limits – Summary

In Colson Whiteheads “City Limits” He explains how he has his own New York, and how everyone else in the city has their own personal New York. He then describes when he first started building his own New York, on the uptown No.1 train. He describes the time in a sarcastic tone saying “It’s the 70’s, so everything is filthy.” In his own New York he thinks everything is still filthy because that’s his own New York. He also talks about how to make your own New York based on strong experiences that you’ve had in the city. He then goes on to explain how you shouldn’t listen to anyone trying to tell you facts about New York because if you didn’t witness it, it didn’t happen in your New York. He says that everyone has their own New York because the buildings are always changing and different people are always visiting at different times so their is no one specific New York to him. He then says in your own new york if your apartments could talk they would have their own stories and gossip about you, He then goes on to say how you should cherish these places because they carry all your old stories and experiences.

Summary on City Limits.

The Colossus of New York By Colson Whitehead is a summary about each individual building their “own New York”. Whitehead says that being in New York makes other places seem inferior. Whitehead also believes that every person starts building their own New York the first time they lay there eyes on the city. Whitehead says his first building block of his “own New York” was when he first saw the city’s No. 1 train. We all see the same thing but have different perspectives on what we see in New York. Things in the city will always be changing but we will remember those things as they were the first time we laid our eyes on them. It’s true that NYC is changing everyday and it’s up to the people to decide on how they want to view the changes. Those who have lived in New York for decades have seen the city undergo massive transformations. Whitehead will always believe what he saw or experienced at the time, no matter what others tell him about New York because there were stories that hes heard such as when Whitehead heard about the “rumors” that there was water at Bryant Park, but the only time he has seen water there was when there was a huge water pipe explosion. Whitehead believes that it’s important that you remember how things were because the day they will be gone you will not get the chance to say your farewell as it could happen at any given moment.

Summary of “City Limits”

In the passage of “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead, he tells the story of New York. He describes NY in few words that it is the greatest city. Colson whitehead was born in NY as well and he loved this place. He says that everybody has their own version of New York and  there are 8 million cities in the naked city. We all see it in our own different ways and we starting seeing that when we first lay our eyes on it. The first instant that you lay your eyes on it, that is the first brick of your New York.  As you live on in new York you build your own New York. The things around us start changing but we still remember how they were. We see them how they were in the past. We see things as they were in our experience while the others see it in their experience or remember it that way. We might still remember the stores or other places that were replaced by new stores. There is a time when we have to say good bye it hard to do that. It is hard to see your favorite shop being replaced by a different shop or leaving you apartment building. However we realize that New York still moves on even if we are not there and that makes us New Yorker. When u realize that than you try and remember your New York version even more and try to fix city in place, your city. You remember everything of Your new York which is replaced but u still remember it the way you experienced it and saw the city  and  for you it will always stay like that. Everybody will remember their own version of it and live on but You will stay here because once you live in New York , You cant live anywhere else.
