Hi there!

My name is Salome, but people usually call me Sal. I am a young professional with experience in graphic design, advertising, and digital marketing. Currently, I am working on a degree in Communication Design to pursue my lifelong passion in the art of marketing and digital communications.

My fascination with visual communications and the digital world started at the age of 13 when I launched Adobe Photoshop for the first time. I was previously interested in digital photography and the fact that I could modify or completely change the reality of my photos with the help of the program greatly excited me. Over time as I learned more about the importance of visuals and good design, I started reading books about marketing, branding, and color theory. At this point, I had already dropped out as an economics major from University in Bulgaria and was living in New York ā€“ one of the most inspiring cities in terms of many things, including great designs & history.

During my first few years in New York, while I was still trying to settle in the city, I was rigorously working in many types of jobs. At the same time, I was focusing on and planning for my goal, which was a formal education in the field of visual communications. Six years after leaving Bulgaria and five years since moving to New York, here I am, pursuing my lifelong passion!

My interest in the field has only gotten stronger with time, and now that I have made it this far, Iā€™m ready to learn as much as possible and enjoy the process of this opportunity as well.

My concept for this project was online dating during the Covid-19 pandemic. After reading articles on this topic, I quickly realized that although we are all scared of this virus and prefer to quarantine most of the time, the need for social interaction and in this case, romantic, is still there, stronger than ever. Most of all online dating websites reported the highest activity in their history during the first few months of the quarantine. Although this can be simply explained by the boredom that people were experiencing while staying home, the absence of close human connections that is still relevant today makes me wonder what kind of psychological effects it might have on adults in general.

I decided to depict a romance in the digital world by showing box of chocolates and roses in a downloadable, digital form. I believe that this provides that metaphorical paradox where the symbols of romance & dating that are supposed to be in physical form are now presented fully digital.

Assignment 2 Part 1 – Salome Mindiashvili

For this project, I decided to explore the idea of online dating during a COVID-19 pandemic. I found two interesting articles below which discussed how the desire for human connection and significance may have increased during these challenging times. Although dating in the age of COVID-19 is simpler in some ways, yet in addition, thereā€™s now also the fear of infection.

Article 1: https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20201022/dating-during-the-pandemic-online-and-restless

In this article, health experts recommend virtual dating as the safest way for people to engage with each other, especially for people who have health conditions. Itā€™s also the best time to discuss peopleā€™s routines and interactions, given the pandemic.

Article 2: https://www.miamistudent.net/article/2020/10/tinder-during-covid?ct=content_open&cv=cbox_latest

I found the quote below very interesting from this article.

ā€œAs human beings, I would argue that we all crave social connectedness and togetherness, so turning to these apps to find a person makes sense during these times, especially when youā€™re being asked to be apart,ā€ Leser said.
