Patrick Rogers – Sketchbook, Week 9, Draw a Podcast

4/27/2022 – 1:48 PM

For this sketchbook assignment, I listened to a podcast by the museum at FIT, in which Dr. Valerie Steele interviewed the legendary designer Christian Louboutin. It was a lot about his history as a designer, from how he started his shoe label, to how he came up with the idea to paint the soles of his shoe designs crimson red. I absolutely enjoyed the podcast, and drawing what came to mind as I listened to it!

For my two final color compositions, I chose to use a limited color palette in one, and a warm color palette in the other. For my final packaging and banner, I chose the limited color palette composition. I chose that one because I rendered the limited color palette with colors that would realistically appear in the scene if it magically existed, which I think fits well because it gave the final composition a magic realism element. Because the idea is about witches eating pineapple ice cream flying across a beach, in a very tropical environment, I wanted to ground those magical elements in a realistic color palette, to make the witches stand out even more.

Patrick Rogers – Assignment 1, Part 4

composition 1
composition 2

In composition one, I used pigma micron pens. I included stippling on the pineapple bowls that the witches are holding, and I also put some hatching on the one witch’s broom end. In composition two, I used a pigma brush pen. I tried to focus on showing different values in this one, however I found it very difficult to at that scale, as the drawing was fairly small and the brush of the brush pen is pretty big, comparatively.
